Contrary to what you may expect, most wines today are made forconsumption while they are still young (within two years of thevintage on the label) and will not improve much over time. In fact, studies have found that the vast majority of wine today is consumedwithin a few hours of purchase.
With red wines you can generally bank on an older vintage havingmore complexity and smoothness than a younger vintage, especially forage-worthy grapes, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and blendscontaining these grapes. Because red wines contain age-friendly tanninsand color pigments that originate from contact with grape skins andstems, and from aging in oak barrels, they continue to develop andmature inside the bottle and become more drinkable over time.
Red wines that are more expensive than average usually will improve
with age, whereas lower-priced wines, under around $15, are made formore immediate consumption within months of their release.
The issue of vintage can be complex. There are wine vintage charts(available as a reference resource in many wine stores) that list wineregions around the world and rate each vintage year according to itsquality, which is primarily determined by that years weather. Weatherin a given year is more critical in France, for example, than in the USbecause wine laws in France prohibit irrigation of vines. In other
words, the quantity of water that a vine gets is not controlled by vineyard manager like it is in California, unless the vineyard is dfarmed, which does not get irrigated. Whats more, the climatesCalifornias wine regions are fairly consistent year-to-year, makdifferences between vintages less meaningful.
Red wines age according to a curve that reaches a peak of improment and then declines. It is an educated guess by winemakers awine critics as to when in the life of the wine that peak will occur
Because white wines are absent of tannins and their natural prevative characteristics, the older a white wine gets, the greater chance that it may be beyond its peak and on the downside slopits drinkability curve, although there are exceptions. White wipriced at around $20 and up, however, are usually handcrafted
aged in oak, which allows more bottle aging. This extra time in wine cellar can often result in a more interesting and flavorful whwine.

The Skinny The Wine Garage is all about the juice. Its also about having funlike a kid in a candy store. The Wine Garage is, literally, a former gas stationTodd, the wine buyer, travels far and wide to find top-shelf, affordably pricedwines. Inside, youll find more than 200 different labels neatly arranged in caon the floor and an engaging staff who are friendly, attentive and most impo
tantly, they know their wines.
Buzz Despite its funky space, the Wine Garage is a wine lovers best friend.Reminiscent of visiting your favorite record store (yes, kids, once upon a timthats where you had to buy your music), the fun is going through all the casand finding something youve never heard of. All the wines have been testdriven by the staff, so, whatever you select, you wont be disappointed.
Value Ultimately, the Wine Garage is about value. Its no secret that in NapaValley, its difficult to score a highly rated red for less than $65, but the Wine
Garage manages to do it all the time. The staff takes great pride hunting dowunusual and lesser-known, limited-production wines and passing their hagglfinesse on to us.
Ten-second summary With the exception of Wine Garage labeled-awardwinning Cabernets, nothing in this hip hideaway is more than $25! The Wi
Garage is stocked with premium, small-lot wines that you wont find at BevMTrader Joes or your local wine store (plus, they do a better job storing theirwines at the correct temperature).
Best bets In addition to all the labels the Wine Garage represents, they alsoproduce their own lip-smacking blends. My in-house favorites are: 2009 JoyRide (white blend), 2007 Napa Valley Cabernet, 2007 Napa Valley Petite
Syrah, 2008 Napa Valley Chihuahua Cabernet and 2006 Napa Valley Hside Cabernet.
Under-the-radar Go old-school with half-gallon jugs filled while you wait
using their specifically designed service station nozzles. Not only are the windelicious (and affordable), the jug is crazy fun conversation at the table. Its aa cool gift.
Secrets For the next few weeks, receive an additional ten percent off thealready low prices when you purchase six bottles. Twenty percent on a case.Better yet, the Wine Garage has the BEST wine club in the valley and theyship just about everywhere.
Insider If youre a serious wino, get on the inside track for ultra exclusivedeals by hooking up with the Wine Garage on Twitter and Facebook (wine cmembers get first crack to cream-of-the-crop finds).

is rural and surrounded by natural beauty in an
enviable, scenic location, but it is also very accessible fr
a major highway.
To get there, you drive down a nice, two-lane road w
hills going up on to the right, and panoramic vistas of
hundreds of acres of vineyards on the left. Depending
the season, tractors, farm trucks and pickups of every
make and vintage often outnumber cars. As you contin
on you will spot what appears to be a pair of handsom
barns, but as you get closer you can see its a winery, an
an exceptionally stylish one at that. The architecture at
this 44-acre property fits into the landscape seamlessly
surrounded by vines, with the property line at the back
being the Russian River.
Turn into the long drive and go past the lovingly
restored farm house to the winery. The smaller of the tw
buildings, the one on the left, houses the tasting room,
modern and fully licensed commercial kitchen and a
private tasting room. Across from it is the cavernous ba

It has in fact been brilliantly designed for weddings

County winemakers and grape

Our single-designate
Cabernets express the specific
characteristics and nuances of
the distinct wine-growing
blocks of the Wilson vineyards.
With an emphasis on hands-on
cultivation practices, the
vineyards produce intense fruit
because of the low yields. This
is accomplished in a variety of
ways, including trellising,
conservative pruning, and
individualized canopy
management. The source of
these grapes is generated from
the almost 300 acres of vineyard
the Wilsons own and care for.In addition to Cabernet, they
also produce four vineyard
designate Zinfandels, a vineyard
designate Primitivo, plus
Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot,
a pair of Chardonnays and an
always refreshing Sauvignon

Ryan Waldron so aptly puts it,
Were a Bordeaux House with a
lot more to it.
But first you need to stop by,
visit and sample. The tasting
room, with its high wood
ceilings, fireplace, old vines
above the bar and a three-sided
copper-topped tasting bar
which is backed by a large
window framing the vineyards
on the other side is the perfect
place to learn about the wines of
deLorimier.
Outside you can picnic onthe lawn and wander about. The
key to it all is to relax and enjoy,
which is what this beautiful spot
is all about. Just one more
reason why, when you visit this
part of the world, this is one
winery you will not want to
miss. And should you be lucky
enough and the planets align,
what a better place to marry.

WINEMAKER PROFILE: PATZ & HALL WINERY

BY JoSh Stein
Established by four talented friends in 1988, Patz & Hall helped to pioneer single-vyard Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs in California. For Founder and Winemaker James Hsuccess has been earned by building on and refining what he learned from his earlymentors: using exceptional cool-climate fruit from trusted producers; processing withgentle, small-lot fermentations; aging in custom cooperage; and then bottling, largelyunfiltered, to guarantee a uniqueness of place in each glass. James has combined thiswinemaking approach with his own boldness, imagination and trademark perfectionismwhich is why Patz & Hall wines are featured on the lists of top restaurants around theworld.
In terms of critical acclaim, the results speak for themselves. Vintage after vintage,Patz & Hall wines earn accolades as defining expressions of the grand cru-caliber vine-yards they come from. This includes approximately a dozen sites, and famed vineyardslike Hyde, Hudson, Pisoni and Zio Tony. James says the goal with each release is to creathe benchmark wine for that vineyard the wine that becomes the reference for thatcombination of location and varietal for all future bottlings. Despite site-specific wine-makings rigor, this is the desire that drives James, and for wine lovers it has yielded mothan-ample rewards.
James Halls passion for wine began while traveling with his family through Europe the late 1960s. Later, he met fellow wine enthusiast and future Patz & Hall founder AnMoses at UC Santa Cruz, where James would often study winemaking textbooks, despi

approachable, sophisticated and easy going. The tasting room and winery
grounds, where you can sit and sample exceptional wines, carry the same
warm and welcoming feel with its outdoor scents of rosemary and citrus,
sounding wind chimes, Italian landscaped gardens and mosaic patio table
designed by his wife, Irit Weir.

commercially released vintage in 1980.
Over the years, Ernie has perfected the craft
of winemaking and loves to play an active
role in every aspect of the business, from
grape growing to winemaking to marketing.
I like the challenge, working with all thesedifferent grapes to see which wines I will
make each year. I find it fun, exciting and
interesting. Hagafen Cellars vintages are
put together based on wines Ernie
personally enjoys, as well as feedback from
his customers. He listens closely, hearing what they have to say on
any given day in the tasting room.
Hagafen Cellars has many fine wines in which to choose. They
produce 8-10 varietals each year and offer 20 distinct vintages on
their tasting menu, including Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon,
Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Roussanne, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah,
White Riesling and Zinfandel. They also produce three highlyacclaimed Brut Cuve sparkling wines as well as late harvest dessert
releases. Their small lot releases start with superb fruit, where they
seek to shape each vintage to showcase its uniqueness from the
region in which it originates. For this reason, their production is
only 8,000 cases, coming from their own 20-acre estate and from
other select growers from the Napa Valley and Lake County regions.
You know their wines are exceptional if the White House has
been serving Hagafen Cellar wines, on and off, to foreign dignitaries
since the 1980s. Put simply, their award-winning wines are best in
class, winning gold medals throughout the decades, including their
2010 Chardonnay, Oak Knoll District, Napa Valley; the 2009 Merlot,
Napa Valley Estate Bottled; as well as the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon,
Napa Valley Estate Bottled; 2007 Cabernet Franc, Napa Valley Estate
Bottled and many more.
Hagafen Cellars is excited to announce their newly released 2011
Sauvignon Blanc which comes from the Moskowite Ranch on the
eastern foothills of Napa Valley. This older Sauvignon Blanc vineyard
has been the source for their Sauvignon Blanc wines for over a
decade and is a hillside planting with well-exposed fruit, allowing
beautiful aromatic fruitiness to surface naturally. The nose of Oro
Blanco grapefruit, which is also grown here on their property at the
winery, stands out with its strong pungent flavors. Its the amazing
balance of fruitiness and tart acid that makes this wine one you willnot want to put down.
Tours are offered daily at 11 a.m., by appointment only, except
Saturdays and holidays. Tastings of seasonal wine library releases of
past vintages are also available by appointment. Hagafen Cellars
offers their award-winning wines at their tasting room, on-line, in
select stores and restaurants, but also through their three distinct
exclusive wine clubs: Prix, Hagafen and R.S. (residual sugar).
Take a beautiful drive along the Silverado Trail and stop by
Hagafen Cellars. Everyone working there wants you to come and
taste the passion, soul and enjoyment in every sip of Hagafen wine.

Mnage Trois Pinot Grigio is
the perfect, all-purpose white wine
Trinchero Family Estates recently
announced they are launching a Mnage
Trois Pinot Grigio. To play off the namesake,
the renowned Napa Valley winery first
launched Mnage Trois with blends: red,
white and ros. The Mnage Trois red blend
topped charts as the #1 red blend wine, then
quickly became the #1 overall red wine in the
United States. The white and ros quickly
followed, taking the titles respectively as
the #1 Premium White and #1 Ros sold in
the United States. In addition to topping the
charts, Mnage Trois continues to lead the
pack with recent accolades like this yearsImpact Hot Brand Award and the Fast
Track Brand Award.
In response to high consumer demand for
the blends, Mnage Trois adapted new
marketing and winemaking strategies with
the release of single varietal wines, like the
Mnage Trois Chardonnay in 2009 and
Moscato in fall of 2011. We are expanding
and have been looking to add varietals to
enhance our fine wine profile, states
Marketing Director Tim Peters. Consumerdemand for the brand continues to grow, so
it was a natural progression to produce a
Pinot Grigio, the ideal complement to our
existing counterparts.
Were incredibly excited to hear what
consumers have to say about Mnage Trois
Pinot Grigio, says Bob Torkelson, President
and COO of Trinchero Family Estates. The
Pinot Grigio is designed specifically to
capture the essence of what Mnage Trois
consumers want in wine: delicious on its
own and wonderfully versatile with food,fruit-forward, essentially the perfect way to
end the day. After an amazing couple of
years with the blended wines and our single
varietal Chardonnay and Moscato, intro-
ducing the Pinot Grigio would give Mnage
Trois consumers a fresh new wine to enjoy.
Winemakers ventured across Californi

If this is one of your many visits to the wine country, you are
no doubt looking for something a little different. So why not
change things up and take the road less travelled through SuisunValley The Napa Back Road. We all no doubt have our favorites,
but we are always looking to one up our friends back home. Yes,
that never ending search for something new and refreshing, but
still preserving all that made you first fall in love with the whole
Wine Country Experience.
If you are staying in downtown Napa, do you realize you are
just approximately 15 to 20 minutes away from a valley that
preserved what Napa was in the 1960s? However, the wines at
such places like Vezer Family Vineyard and the Blue Victorian
Winery take advantage of both the old traditions, such as 100%
hand punched down wines, along with implementing the impor-
tant new techniques learned from those great California wine-makers over the last 50 years.
This Suisun Valley has been a long-time held secret in the wine
country. In fact, many of the locals try to continue this secret,
simply because it is where they go to still experience those old
feelings of days gone by. Suisun Valley is where you can find
wines that would sell for over $150 a bottle at the popular better
known tourist destinations in Napa, for $30 to $60. These same
wines have 94, 95 and 97 point rankings and medals from the
greatest national and international competitions!

the fact that they werent part of his curriculum. This fascination ledto a transfer to the North American mecca for winemakers, UCDavis. After receiving his degree, Jamess first job in 1981 wasworking under renowned winemakers Leo McCloskey and PatrickMahaney at Felton-Empire. There, he learned to combine wine-makings two sides: Leo was a scientist, obsessed with unravelingthe mysteries of wine. Pat was the craftsman, meticulously workingwith the raw materials. As youll see when you try them, one canstill clearly taste the influence of these mentors in each Patz & Hallwine.
1983 brought James to Flora Springs as Assistant Winemaker, where he spent four years honing his craft and learning the intrica-cies of barrel-fermenting small-lot Chardonnays. By1988, he had become Winemaker and EstateManager for Honig Winery, and thats when he, AnneMoses, Heather Patz and Donald Patz, the latterhaving been Sales Manager at Flora Springs,

One of the keys to the winerys success hasbeen the relationships James, Donald, Heatherand Anne have created and nurtured withgrowers like Larry Hyde, Charlie and BudChenoweth, Gary Pisoni, and Lee Martinelli.Another has been the judicious use of cutting-
edge equipment and processes to enhancequality without losing the spirit of hands-onsmall-lot winemaking. The winery is state-of-the-art where it needs to be, while preserving the
traditional where appropriate, like Patz & Halls custom-madeFrench cooperage, which requires a special three-year supply of agstaves be kept constantly available. That same eye to detail led Pat
