EAGLE AWARD

Nor-Son, Inc.Project: Gull Lake Conference CenterCategory: Commercial Construction$1-5 Million

The Gull Lake Center was built to serve a growing segment in Grand View Lodge Resort’s conference business. The conventionally framed arts and crafts styled facility was designed to blend into the 100- year-old historic resort. Utilizing 3-dimensional design, the 30,233 square foot building was disguised within the resort property minimizing loss of mature trees.

An expansive entrance and registration area serves a multitude of functions for the resort from group registration and coffee breaks, to wedding receptions and dinner parties. A large cultured stone fireplace and reclaimed timber trusses provide warmth and ambience to the space. The ball room seats up to 500 guests and can be divided into two smaller rooms, each with audio visual. Below, one of the regions largest wine cellars showcases a collection of over 2,000 bottles, complete with tasting bar and seating for 70 people.

EAGLE AWARD

Nor-Son, Inc.Project: Chase on the LakeCategory: Commercial ConstructionOver $5 Million

The Chase Hotel was a landmark historic resort for Walker, Minnesota, a logging and fishing town. But in 1997, a fire destroyed the majority of the resort and left the building unusable. Leisure Hotels & Resorts, out of Leawood, Kansas, bought the property to restore it to its former grandeur, with modern hotel amenities.

The main entrance of the hotel was retained and the new addition built to match the look and feel of the original 1920’s era, updating the hotel with modern conveniences. A 30-foot section was structurally stabilized in its present state connecting the new sections around for a seamless transition. The stucco finish is accented with banded exterior insulated finish system to replicate the historic time period. Other amenities include a restaurant with modern kitchen, bar, dining room and patio with breathtaking views of Leech Lake.

HEALTHCARE CONSTRUCTION

EAGLE AWARD

Nor-Son, IncProject: Cuyuna Regional Medical Center AdditionCategory: Healthcare ConstructionOver $5 Million

The Cuyuna Regional Medical Center created a state-of-the-art hospital for the rural, recreational community which it services, with a modern metropolitan feel. All construction was conducted while the hospital and clinic were fully operational. The facility had to be available to provide seamless, exacting services to their clients at all times, while meeting stringent Joint Commission and Health standards.

Working with basically four separate buildings with varying ceiling heights, the 1962 building was magnificently transformed into an open, warm and inviting space. The solution was to build a new structure over the existing building, make it water tight, and then dismantle the old building as they remodeled individual departments as spaces became available. The 3 ½ year multi-phased Cuyuna Regional Medical Center project utilized infection control and disruption avoidance practices to maintain full hospital and clinic operations during construction.
