NORBERRY-GLENLEE COMMUNITY CENTRE 1

Spring registration for Softball, Baseball, Basketball, Mighty Soccer, Mini Soccer and Youth Soccer is ALL ONLINE again this year.

For information and links for the different sports, go to the “Registration” tab on the website. Please note that all Softball and Baseball registrations are forwarded to the associations for team formation. Youth soccer registrations are taken to BVSC where teams are formed district

wide. NGCC Manages our Basketball and Mini Soccer team formation.

If this is the first time you are registering, you will have to “Create an Account” first. For some reason and only on some operating systems, Google Chrome may have to be used, so if you are having trouble, download the free version of Chrome and try again.

Online registration is open towards the end of February and after March 16th all registrations will be subject to a $50 late fee.

All registrants will be charged a Participation fee of $20.00 per program/child. Registration costs for each sport will be posted on the website when available.

For more information please call our office at 204-256-6654 or email [email protected]

ONLINE SPRING AND SUMMER SPORTS REGISTRATION

VOLUNTEER SIGN UPAll registrants are required to pay a $50 volunteer fee in addition to the sport registration cost at the time of registration. PLEASE CONSIDER the opportunity to get your volunteer fee back by volunteering for a 2-hour shift (or agreeing to coach/manage a team), by responding to the email from NGCC/Sign-Up.Com. When the shift is completed you will be refunded that amount. We will also post a link on the website. The NGCC values your volunteer time more than your money!

For more information call our office at 204-256-6654 or email [email protected]. We encourage all families to sign up for shifts as opposed to paying – it is a great way to show your children that it is important to spend some time giving back to your community!

BASKETBALLBasketball at NGCC is administered by the Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association. The WMBA’s main program is its Community Club Basketball League (a.k.a. Club Basketball). The Spring league is open to ages 8-18. There are no ‘tryouts’ for club basketball as teams are made up based on the number of players registered at each community centre. Our Convenor Colin can be reached at [email protected].

The WMBA Spring League runs from April to June. The Club league plays its games on weekends (traditionally teams ages 11 and under play Saturdays while teams ages 12+ play Sundays) along with one weeknight practice.

For more information visit www.norberry-glenlee.ca/Basketball.aspx or the WMBA home page www.wmba.ca

JUNIOR NBA PROGRAMThe JR NBA program provides an entry-level basketball program for young children 5 to 7 years old - Built by a community of league organizers, parents, coaches committed to minor basketball - provide a fun, active and healthy learning environment. The commitment is weekly 45-minute

practices for 10-12 weeks. Games will be modified to be age-appropriate, simple and fun. Program will include age-appropriate equipment (smaller basketball and lowered adjustable hoops) and modified games - Participants will receive a size-appropriate Spalding® Rookie Gear Basketball and NBA team branded t-shirt – for more detailed information, visit their website at www.jrnba.ca

MINI SOCCERNGCC’s Mini Soccer programs are a great way to introduce your child to the world’s most popular sport in a fun and non-competitive way. Children enjoy improving and learning new skills, making new friends, exercising and becoming fit! The success of these programs depends on the people and parents who volunteer as coaches, assistant coaches and managers. We encourage you to step up and share your time with our youth.

NOTE - WE ARE CURRENTLY SEARCHING FOR A CONVENOR FOR OUR MINI KNIGHTS PROGRAM. PLEASE CONTACT THE OFFICE IF YOU CAN HELP!

Mini soccer is comprised of three groups:

Mighty Knights for children ages 3-4 years - play May and June - 1 evening/week Mini Knights for children ages 4-6 years - play May and June - 2 evenings/week Junior Knights for children ages 7-8 years - play May and June - 2 evenings per week

The Mini and Junior programs end with a windup party. The players and their families enjoy great camaraderie and fun games. The Mighty soccer teams end the season with a special evening party as well.

NGCC‘s “Mini Soccer Goal” is to have the programs continue to grow each and every year. We thoroughly enjoy seeing the children enthusiastically return to the soccer pitches each spring! Remember, the success of these programs depends on you, so please get involved.

For more information please visit www.norberry-glenlee.ca/Mini_Soccer.aspx

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEPresident’s Message

Even though it’s cold outside, the promise of a new year and new possibilities can pull you through the winter months and into spring. We here at the Norberry-Glenlee Community Centre are excited about 2019. Our focus at the NGCC in 2018 was on investing in the future of our community. To this end, we made major upgrades and improvements to our community centre at 26 Molgat Avenue, so we can provide modern, safe, convenient and comfortable facilities for sports, social and cultural events.

This year, I’m thrilled to announce we are making progress on the NGCC Accessible Play Park, (which will be located next to our Norberry facilities) and that we are set to host Winnipeg’s Challenger Baseball Field of Dreams (which provides an opportunity for children with cognitive or physical disabilities to enjoy the full benefits of participation in baseball). Both these projects will help NGCC serve all members of our community better.

We will continue in our efforts to program events that cross the spectrum of our community members’ age and interests. Keep your eyes peeled for more information about upcoming events on our website (www.norberry-glenlee.ca) and on our Twitter and Facebook feeds.

My thanks to our volunteers, including our dedicated Board members who make all of this possible; all great people who care about their neighbors and their city.

Sean Fedorowich - NGCC President

NORBERRY-GLENLEE CC INFORMATION Are you wondering where to find information about NGCC and activities that we offer? Look no further than our website located at www.norberry-glenlee.ca!

You can read news and information on recent and upcoming events, plus NGCC’s Constitution and By-laws, detailed contact information on staff and The Board of Directors, all on our website.

Information is also available on other programs and services offered through our facility, such as adult evening exercise programs, and daytime seniors programming. Updated Bingo pots can also be seen on the top right hand corner of every page on our website.

You can “Like Us” on Facebook or check us out on Twitter @NGCCentre too!

CARMELLE’S CORNER2018 has absolutely flown by here at NGCC! Hard to believe we are gearing up for Spring/Summer registration already.

Christmas 2018 again saw NGCC reach out to the community through the schools and provide hampers to four families in the area. The main driving force behind this in addition to the Board, was Donna and Claude Jubinville, who put in countless hours of shopping, wrapping and organizing. We know that these families were very appreciative of the hampers! Thanks to the Jubinville’s, Kevin, Shirley and the Rawluk’s for delivering the hampers.

Due to declining numbers of people attending our events, we decided to send out a survey to people who have registered with us over the past year. We were shocked to hear that people didn’t seem to know what’s happening at NGCC! Turns out, most people don’t visit our website often, and this is where most of our information is. We decided going forward that we will use email addresses that we get and send out bi-monthly e-news to everyone, and hopefully we will see increase attendance at our events :)

We are always looking to acknowledge special volunteers, so if you know of someone who has given years of service to NGCC, please let us know. NGCC has a “Volunteer of the Year” and a “Lifetime Builder Award” that we hand out at our Knight of Celebration each year. There are many coaches, managers and other vital members of our team staffs that have contributed many years and hours of their time for our children, and they deserve to be recognized!

Please remember to attend our Annual General Meeting on Monday, April 15th at 7:00 pm in the Multi-purpose Room at the Norberry site. More now than ever before, we are looking for more of our NGCC families to get involved. It’s always nice to get new, fresh activities that families want to participate in, and what better way to do that than getting involved yourself?

Hope to see you all around the community centre in 2019!

Carmelle Remillard – NGCC Executive Assistant 204-256-6654 [email protected]

KEVIN’S SPECIAL OPSThe NGCC starts 2019 saying goodbye to one our employees this January. Frank Rumpf started out over 16 years ago at the Glenlee Community Centre before Norberry and Glenlee amalgamated. He transferred over to the Norberry site once the new facility was complete. Frank’s commitment to detail and cleanliness has made NGCC well known as one of the cleanest community facilities in Winnipeg. Frank will also be missed by all the rental groups he has been involved with over the past years. We’re sad to see him go, but we wish him all the best in his retirement.

The NGCC social hall is finally complete and looks fantastic with its new ceiling, lighting and updates. This renovation was well worth the wait. We are currently in the process of changing all our facilities’ outdated lighting with new high efficient LED lighting. We hope to have the transformation all complete within three years.

We’re considering removing one of the rinks from our Glenlee site and may incorporate a skate path in the fields for the next winter season. This year we may also do some rink repair on a few of the sections of rinks at both locations.

Last year, NGCC purchased a trailer to transport our front-end mower and some of the heavy equipment around. This year we may be looking at purchasing a truck instead of renting one.

After all the changes we made in 2018, we’re going to take a little breather from all the recent renovations to do some organizing and much needed house cleaning. We hope to see you enjoying NGCC facilities soon.
