Academic RegaliaAcademic ceremonies with gowns, mortarboards, tassels, hoods, and maces are traditions handed down from European universities of the Middle Ages . These first organized institutions of learning originated during the 12th and 13th centuries, generally under the jurisdiction of the church . Robes, hoods, and caps were worn mainly for warmth in unheated buildings by the clerics, monks, and priests who were the first students .

European universities continue to show great diversity in their academic dress . In the United States, as the result of our English heritage, caps and gowns have been used since colonial times by the faculties of some universities and became generally standardized about 1895 .

The field of study is indicated by the color of velvet facing (under the chin) of the hood of all master’s and doctoral degree holders .

President’s MessageMonica Green, Ed.D.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, Chancellor Wolde-Ab Isaac, and our fine faculty, classified professionals, and administrative team at Norco College, it is my pleasure and privilege to welcome you to the 2020 Commencement Ceremony .

Commencement is a time to celebrate the fulfillment of a goal and our mission to provide transformational educational opportunities

to our students . As we do this, we are thinking about the workforce of the local and regional communities we serve . Each student who succeeds here contributes both to the economic health of our region and as a constructive citizen in his or her community .

Graduates, as you receive your degree or certificate today, many of you will continue your formal education at universities, while others will apply what you have learned here immediately in the workforce . Regardless, please know that we, like your parents, relatives, and close friends who may be with you today, are proud of you and wish you continuing success . We hope that you will remember Norco College and return here often so we may be reminded of what you and your fellow graduates have contributed to our Norco College family and the generations of students that will follow in your footsteps .

2020 Norco College Faculty SpeakerKris AndersonProfessor, English

Kristine Anderson has taught college English for over thirty-five years . She was hired at Riverside Community College in 1989 and began teaching at Norco College in 2014 . She has a Master of Fine Arts in poetry from New England College and a Master of Arts in English from San Diego State University . She considers herself a writer-teacher whereby each “hat” informs the other .

During her years at RCC, Professor Anderson served as English department chair and writing center coordinator . She was instrumental in curriculum development that made it possible for the RCC literary magazine, MUSE, to be produced in a college course dedicated to publishing . She has always been an advocate for local and regional arts and was involved with creating the curriculum for an English class dedicated to authors and literature of the Inland Empire . In addition, she taught twice as a study abroad instructor in Oxford, England . She initiated readings series at RCC in the 1990s, which brought authors to campus, and was a founding participant of Voices from the Americas lecture series at RCC in the 2000s, a collaboration of the college, the three universities in the area, the local unified school district, the public library, and other organizations . Presenters included Carlos Fuentes, Richard Rodriguez, and Maxine Hong Kingston .

In addition to being a dedicated teacher of creative writing and composition, Professor Anderson is an accomplished writer and poet receiving multiple fellowships and publications in The Copperfield Review, Soundings East, Southern Indiana Review, and the anthology, Active Voices IV . Most recently, Professor Anderson put her writing talents to work as the accreditation co-chair for Norco College and the lead editor for the college accreditation report . Her dedication to the institution, students and co-workers was evident in every page . Professor Jo Scott-Coe expressed it well when she said, “She has always been a colleague who put the ‘C’ in collegial .”

Along with these many professional and personal accomplishments, when asked to describe her accomplishments, Professor Anderson begins with “Proud wife—and colleague—of David Mills, and proud mother of Jonathan; […] working with you [students] and helping you learn to connect with others—and with your own ideas—through writing . Laughing together, watching you grow, seeing you succeed!” Professor Anderson will be retiring this spring after twenty-nine years of service to RCCD . Our college community will be the lesser, and we can never thank her enough for her dedication, service and inspiration to all who learned with her .

Gabrielle Ante

Gabrielle Ante was born in Las Vegas, Nevada and raised in the Philippines . She and her family permanently settled in the United States when she began seventh grade at Arlington High School .

After graduating high school in 2015, Ante enrolled at Riverside City College, where she joined the RCC Women’s Tennis team for two years while pursuing her general education requirements as a Chemical Engineering major . She earned her first degree in Math

and Science in 2018 .

Ante later discovered that even though she earned the Math and Science degree with the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum plan (IGETC), she was one class short of obtaining the certification . She quickly began investigating and connecting with professors and counselors who helped her towards completion .

Today, she is graduating with seven additional associate degrees in Pre-Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Social and Behavioral Studies, Humanities, and Communications . Her degrees come from a variety of disciplines, like the School of STEM, School of Arts & Humanities, and School of Social & Behavioral Sciences .

She plans to transfer to a four-year university to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering . In the future, she seeks to gain experience in research and development as a Chemical Engineer while working toward a master’s degree and eventually a doctorate .

Ante comes from a family immersed in the STEM field . Her father is a health care practitioner and her mother is a registered nurse .

Raised in a Filipino culture centered on family and self-development, she owes her success to her family’s support and guidance . Ante aspires to build a strong foundation of knowledge and community by connecting ideas and working hard to apply them in hopes to improve society . In her spare time, she enjoys watching movies, reading and drawing .
