Message From Key 3-Happy Holiday’s

Dear Scouters, It is hard to believe that the end of the year is upon us again. This past year we have so much to be thankful for, and that is because of your dedication, leadership, and support to our great program called Scouting. As we look back over the last twelve months, we have so much to smile about. We have grown in every measurable area, and we continue to be a “Gold Level” council. What does that mean to you? That means that you can be proud of all of your efforts because we are offering a premiere Scouting program to the youth in our communities. Your hard work is truly paying off because you are building tomorrow’s future leaders. Our lake project is off to a fantastic start. We were able to drain the lake with little interruptions from mother nature. Please check our council Facebook page and look for updates often. We are installing two cameras in Camp Klaus to document our historic project. Local Scouting is successful due to the efforts and time given by thousands of volunteers who care about young people. Over the last few years, improvements have been made to camp, new programs have been offered and increased service to local units has been made. This is due to the generosity of our donors and friends. As you plan your year end giving, please be aware of various giving options that are available to support many areas of interest to local Scouting, and especially to our Lake John Deere dredge project at Camp C.S. Klaus. If you would like any more information on year end contributions, please contact Scott Seibert at 563.556.4343 or [email protected]. Happy Holidays from our Family to yours!

Memorial/Tribute Fund Words too often do not express the sentiment we feel at the death of a friend. No finer tribute can be paid than to encourage some boy to live the life of a Scout, and thus perpetuate the high principles you admire in your friend. A contribution to the Boy Scout Permanent Endowment Tribute Fund is the perfect tribute. Your gift to the Permanent Endowment Tribute Fund of the Northeast Iowa Council, Boy Scouts of America is: * A gift that will live on forever for the future of

Scouting in the Northeast Iowa Council permanent endowment fund

* A Tribute to the one whom you wish to honor * Promptly acknowledged with a tribute certificate * A convenient way of expressing your feelings * A tax deductible contribution and a private

expression Mail your gift to:

Lake John Deere Dredge Update In October we were successful in opening the gate valve to drain Lake John Deere. It was a roller coaster of emotions as we encountered a few bumps in the process. We had to pump a good majority of the water as we needed to perform maintenance on the gate. The dewatering of the lake was a huge undertaking and many people need to be thanked for their efforts!

We are now in a waiting pattern for the lake to continue to de-water. Camp will be closed until this Spring to allow construction and trucks to be able to move freely through camp. We have purchased two cameras to take pictures of the progress at camp. Be sure to check our Facebook page and website for updates on Lake John Deere. If you would like to make a donation for the project you can mail it into the Scout Center.

“Save the Lake Fund” PO Box 732

Dubuque, IA 52004 This maintenance fund drive is a 3 year campaign, so all pledges will be able to be paid through December, 2015. Thanks for your support and dedication to this project.

DID YOU KNOW? The Northeast Iowa Council can accept mutual funds or shares of stock. Donating shares that have increased in value is a good way to avoid capital gain taxes. Please contact Scott Seibert at [email protected] or 563.556.4343 if you would like more information.

This probably doesn’t come as a big surprise, but at the end of the 2012 season, we started looking at changes for the 2013 camp season. We know that if changes to our programs are to occur and really get underway, we need to start thinking about them now so we have time to perfect them before asking the boys to participate in them. One of the ways we are planning on doing this is by getting your input as Scout Leaders. What would you like to see? As a staff, we know there are a few things from last year that we would like to change, namely how we run our first-year program (we want to increase first-year Scout involvement through the roof) and creating an older boy program that thrives from one camp season to the next.

Also, looking at the great progress of the lake project, we are still forced to consider the alternatives if the lake renovation doesn’t go according to plan. In place of our aquatics program, what programs would you like to see offered? Perhaps, you would like to see a program return from days gone by that we no longer do, or perhaps, you’d like to see the opposite and bring in a program we’ve never done before. Regardless, our administrative team is eager to hear all of the ideas that our council has to offer and do our best to make 2013 a memorable experience for all the right reasons. So, please, share your ideas with our team. We’ve held onto evaluations from the 2012 season, but here is a chance to weigh in and share your ideas. Email our team at [email protected] and look for more news about changing programs as the year progresses.

Membership Update The Dubuque District Committee has some exciting news for everyone. We now have 1,663 Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venture Scouts in the program! Why is this exciting, you ask? Well, if we can recruit 45 more youth this fall our district will be showing a 2% increase in growth, something many other councils in the nation will not achieve! October and November are great times to recruit youth into the Scouting movement. Packs, we encourage you to con-tinue to recruit new Scouts at the upcoming events such as your pack meetings, Halloween parties and other district events, like the Family Fun Night at the Boys and Girls Club. Anyone can find a pack or troop near them by visiting www.beascout.org. Attention parents and grandparents! There is no better gift to give than the gift of Scouting… a gift truly worth more than the $27 dollars it costs to join.

Journey to Excellence As a part of the Charter Renewal process for 2012, it will be mandatory for every Unit to turn in the Journey To Excellence Scorecard (completed to the best of your ability). Most, if not all, of the Units in the Dellaykee District would have been at the very least a Bronze Unit in 2011 but did not turn in their scorecard. There are several criteria and different things that need to be tracked throughout the year and we understand you may not have ALL of this information. Fill out the form to the best of your knowledge and leave what you don’t know blank. You may be surprised to find that your Unit has qualified for a Journey to Excellence Recognition. Everything in Scouting is now based around the Journey to Excellence from Recruitment and Re-Chartering to Advancements and Community Service. There are several online tools out there for Units to utilize to keep track of these important statistics. You all work extremely hard to make sure the boys have a successful experience in Scouting so DON’T SELL YOURSELF SHORT! If you have specific questions about this process please contact Dane for more info.

2013 Philmont Opportunity (June 28th—July 10th)

Continuing Dellaykee District’s High Adventure opportunities, next summer, Scouts from the Dellaykee District will again be traveling to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. This will be the second time in three years Scouts have had this opportunity to travel as a District Contingent. The contingent thus far is comprised of boys and adults from Garnavillo, Lansing, Elkader, and McGregor. There are only 4 spots remaining for this trip and you should act fast to secure your spot! The fee for Philmont for 2013 is $770 which includes the $100 reservation fee needed to secure a spot for the trip. If you are interested or would like to secure your position for this once in a lifetime trip, please contact Walter Moellering at 563-964-2792 or Jeremy Smerud at 563-490-9630. **These spots are open to youth and adults so act now!
