By Dave ScottAs you already know, Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Grand Erie has kicked off their 2012 campaign. I know that with support from our local communities, it will again be a huge success. Renee VanderHarst is leading the charge and with her drive and dedication, the ‘Bigs’ will make their goal.

I thought I would talk for a moment, a little about a good friend of mine, who for many years has

been the driving force behind our local BBBS… Patti O’Reilly, Executive Director, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Grand Erie… now I know what Patti will say… ‘Oh, it is not about me!’

But, without folks like Patti, I doubt BBBS would exist… her business sense and drive to help others is matched by few in the community. She understands the pulse and the needs of the community… and every time we talk, she and her staff are doing their best to find ‘Bigs’ for the kids, build programs, fundraise… she never stops!

A few years ago, Patti stepped up and brought

Brant area into the fold… when it looked like Brant Big Brothers Big Sisters may not exist anymore. She didn’t have to do it… but just knowing her personality she couldn’t leave those kids high and dry. She accepted the challenge and today Brant is back on its feet, rebuilding.

To run an organization such as BBBS it is no different then running a business and in this era… that is a tough go!

So listen, do me a favour get involved with the Big Brothers Big Sister Bowl for Kids Sake… call Renee at 519-426-3121, get a team together and bowl…

Photo, left to right: Patti O’Reilly (Executive Director BBBS of Grand Erie) admires Renee VanderHarst’s (Resource Coordinator BBBS of Grand Erie) sunglasses and 80’s outfit, while Deb Mather (Scotiabank, Simcoe) looks on at the Big Brothers Big Sister Bowl for Kids Sake campaign kick-off.

Courtesy of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Grand ErieBig Brothers Big Sisters of Grand Erie is a charitable organization and a United Way funded agency. We receive approximately 20% of our budget from United Way and rely on our initiatives to fund the rest of our operating expenses.

“The businesses, service groups, schools, and individuals who take part in the Bowl For Kids Sake do it because they know how much impact our services have

on local kids, their families, and the community as a whole – our community partners are investing their time and dollars to help the future generation reach their full potential. It’s the start of something BIG.” - Executive Director Patti O’Reilly.

In 2011 we provided service to over 420 boys and girls in our community. In 2012 we anticipate serving even more, if we secure the funds to support programming. Services include traditional “Big

& Little” matches, In-School-Mentoring programs, and group and community based programs like “Go Girls” and “Game On” created to help tweens make smart, healthy, responsible lifestyle choices.

“We believe in our responsibility to support the children in our community and are thrilled to be associated with Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Bowl For Kids Sake.” - Jeff Shaus Branch Manager

By Dave ScottAfter ten years as serving as a Financial Advisor at the Scotiabank in Simcoe, Anita Cosley has accepted a position in Dundas, as a Personal Financial Manger.

I asked Anita about her decision, and she said it was a hard one to make, she has worked for Scotiabank in the Haldimand-Norfolk area for the past twenty-seven years… first in Port Dover, then Simcoe, Caledonia, back to Simcoe and now moving on to Dundas.

She explained that there were a lot of tears shed… because the staff and clients are just like family and she wanted

to thank everyone for their support over the years.

As for the new beginning well, Anita finishes in Simcoe Wednesday, February 8th and is off to Dundas.

Good luck with all the new challenges that lay ahead… and thanks for all you have done over the years to support our community.

By Dave ScottA few weeks back, Ron Weiler of Rick McCall Volkswagen, took me on a little walk-about of the new VW location at 370 Queensway West… Ron described a lot of the work that still needed to be completed before the doors at the new location could be opened. At the time, I remember thinking, ‘How are they going to get all this done before mid February?’

Last Friday we took another tour… hard hat and work boots on… and I’ve got to tell you that I am happy to report that Rick, Ron and the McCall staff are telling me, that they will be opened at the new location (370 Queensway) Monday, February 12th.

There is still some flooring to be finished… and some cosmetic decorating to be done… but it will be ready in time and the doors will be

open.

The contractors continue to work away putting the new offices in place, the shop has been upgraded with a couple of new lifts, painted and cleaned up… there are even a couple of new cars sitting out front… so don’t be surprised when the sign goes up next week.

Ron told me that, he and Rick were pleased with the progress over the last couple weeks… materials had been arriving daily… from flooring, to the VW design concept offices… no stone has been left unturned!

The format for the front of the building will be based on the Volkswagen AG's new worldwide standard white frame concept, which is very cool looking! Well Norfolk, get ready for the all-new Rick McCall Volkswagen at 370 Queensway West… OPEN FEBRUARY 12TH! Stop in and check it out!

By Dave ScottEveryone in Port Dover pretty much knows who John Axford is now-a-days… and for the few that don’t… well, he is the Major League Baseball Closer for the Milwaukee Brewers.

John grew up in Port Dover, playing his first ball right here at the park at the head of Main Street. Who knew that one day he would be in the Major Leagues? Actually at points in his career I bet he wondered.

You know, I didn’t see John pitch in Dover… oh, I heard about it… in the papers and on the radio but I never got to watch him play.

The first time I saw John pitch was in Brantford… he was just throwing on the side, in the bullpen… just getting his work in… I remember a buddy saying to me that he was throwing, so we decided to watch. The pop of the catcher’s glove was the thing I remember the most when

he threw… that sound was so clear and distinct… I was impressed.

Of course at the time I was aware of John’s story… drafted by Seattle, went to Notre Dame, had Tommy John surgery, was off to Canisius College, and then to Brantford with the Red Sox.

He ended up signing in ’06 with the Yankees and toiled in the minor leagues… there were glimpses that John’s control was getting stronger… but the Yankees decided to go in a different direction… and John was released.

A March tryout in Toronto in ’07 was John’s chance to resurrect his baseball life… one scout showed up from the Milwaukee Brewers and watched John throw… the scout was impressed with the improvement of John’s control and signed John…

John excelled in the Milwaukee organization and at the end of the 2009 season John got his big league

debut as the Brewers closer… and has not looked back since.

The road was not an easy one for John… but for all those would be ballplayers, the lesson is to stick with it and believe… who says you can’t go from the ballpark on Main Street… to Miller Park in Milwaukee.

John has also been able to take his positive, fun, intelligent demeanour and parlay that into being interviewed by some of the largest media hosts in the USA. Folks like Jim Rome… and Colin Cowherd… both who tote listeners in the million range for their syndicated shows. I have heard a couple of the interviews and John does an outstanding job… having fun discussing his latest facial hair endeavour… to the down right serious questions about his team… such as Prince Fielder signing in Detroit. When John’s playing

days end there will definitely be suitors for his broadcast talents… but for now, let’s keep him on the mound closing out the game for the Brewers.

Oh, and one more honour came John’s way at the end of last season, he and Joe Votto shared the O’Neill Award as Canada’s top baseball player.

Congrats John on your continued success!

By Dave ScottUnderstanding your roots is always important… and coming home to help out is always the right thing to do. John Axford (Major League Baseball pitcher of the Milwaukee Brewers) remembers his Dover roots… on Sunday, at the Port Dover Composite School, John and the Norfolk Pros proudly presented Delhi, Port Dover, and Simcoe Minor Baseball Organizations each with a cheque for $500.

You may remember last September, when the Milwaukee Brewers (John’s team) were heading into the playoffs… with the

excitement building, the Norfolk Pros stepped up to help our local Minor Baseball Association by distributing the popular “The Ax Man Cometh” (poster of John) and collecting donations for the local baseball organizations.

With the cheque presentation on Sunday the Pros once again proved how important it is to support local sports in our community.

On Sunday, John signed autographs for the kids and took questions from the local media and me… ha

ha ha.

One question I wanted to ask John about, was how and when his pitching control

issue got resolved…

He told me that in Milwaukee, coaches noticed that when he pitched, he tended to lean back too far, which left the control uncertain… they suggested that he watch Roy Halladay (former Blue Jay) and try and pitch like him.

John watched and tried to make himself more compact like Halladay. Sure enough his control issues soon disappeared and John’s road to the big leagues became reality!

Congrats to John and the Norfolk Pros for helping out in their community!

Check John out on Twitter @JohnAxford… he has over 40,000 followers!

A pneumatic generator physically delivers the

shock wave to the skin, where it is transformed to sound energy and delivered to the

targeted area. The use of shock waves makes the treatment completely non-invasive and is well tolerated by patients. The effects of shock waves were discovered several decades ago afteritwasnoticedswimmersinthePacificOceanwereaffectedby the detonation of mines although they were well out of the blast radius. As the scientific community grewmore understandingof the effects caused by shock waves, and medical technology advancedtoasufficientlevel, themedicalprofessionwasableto harness the power of shock waves for therapeutic uses.

Radial Shockwave Therapy works by effectively breaking down tissue in a controlled manner to allow the targeted area to heal properly through the regeneration of blood vessels. It has shown to be successful in the treatment of chronic pain.

Results can be felt after only one treatment with a large improvement becoming evident after a month’s worth of treatment, on average tissue regeneration takes place after three months. With Radial Shockwave Therapy, patients are in and out the door with treatments typically only taking between fivetotenminutes.

The DaNgerS Of SOCial MeDiaMost of us are by now familiar with social networking sites such as Facebook,

Twitter or YouTube. They are a neat way of keeping in touch with friends and family all over the world, and to post information about oneself. More recently, we have seen these websites used to disseminate information that, some claim, has led to the “Arab spring” and the overthrow of powerful dictatorships around the world. So why should you still be careful about what you post on-line about yourself or somebody else?

For several reasons.

Firstly, as I said previously, most of us are now familiar with the social websites and the information that can be found on them. That includes employers. Therefore, what you post on Facebook, could affect your chances of getting hired. Consistently raving about getting “hammered” every week-end, for example, may cause a potential employer to think twice before hiring you. It goes without saying that complaining about your boss or co-workers online is not going to lead to the promotion you so badly want – and in fact, could lead to your dismissal.

Secondly, what our moms used to tell us - if you have nothing good to say, don’t say anything – does apply to social media. In a recent decision (Nesbitt v. Neufeld), the British Columbia Court of Appeal awarded the plaintiff $40,000 in damages as a result of mean-spirited comments made about her by her ex-husband, the defendant. The court found that the comments posted by the defendant were disparaging and intended to denigrate the plaintiff; and amounted to both defamation and an invasion of privacy. While the posts in this case may have been extreme, it bears repeating that comments on social networking sites are not private and can come back to haunt their authors.

Thirdly, comments and pictures posted on social networking sites are more and more oftenused todenybenefitsandcompensation topeoplewhohavebeen injured incaraccidents(orotherwise).Insuranceadjustersanddefencelawyersnowroutinelyask for disclosure of social networking site pages. In Morabito v. DiLorenzo, a recent decision of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Court held that “photographs of the plaintiff, taken before and after the accident, are relevant. Photographs after the accident show the effect of the injuries and whether and to what extent theyaffecthisenjoymentof life.Photographs takenbefore theaccidentarerelevant forcomparison.”

In conclusion, social networking media sites can come in handy for people who want to keep in touch with family and friends. They can even help otherwise helpless people topple powerful regimes. But if used improperly, they can become a weapon in someone else’s arsenal against you – so tread with caution!

Vitamin C has several actions that may offer protection against cancer and or other serious illness. It protects cells and their contents, including

DNA, from damage. Vitamin C also helps the body neutralize environmental pollution and toxic chemicals, it enhances immune function, and it inhibits the formation of cancer-causing compounds such as nitrosamines, found in processed meats. Vitamin C preferentially kills cancer cells. It is not toxic to normal healthy cells and can be given at very high doses without harm to the patient. The use of vitamin C as a cytotoxic (cancer cell-killing) agent has been used for over 40 years.Intravenous therapy means to administer a substance or drug directly into a vein. Vitamin C taken in capsule form by mouth cannot achieve high enough blood levels to kill cancer cells, thus the use of intravenous therapy is necessary. Therapeutic dosages of 25 to 100 grams have been used regularly to eliminate cancer. It is impossible to consume that dose by mouth. Optimal absorption of capsule doses by mouth is 1000-2000mg per hour. Generally people will experience diarrhea at higher oral doses anywhere from 2000mg to 10,000 mg (2-10 grams), depending on their individual bowel tolerance and tissue saturation. When vitamin C is given through IV no diarrhea occurs. Blood levels of 350mg/dl must be maintained for therapeutic results to be achieved, and this effect lasts between 30 minutes to 6 hours, depending on the person. Oral routes cannot guarantee a constant serum level. Vitamin C given through IV lends itself to controlling this vital variable in order to ensure cytotoxic levels within the blood. None the less, intravenous vitamin C is a safe therapy. It does not have side effects such as hair loss, nausea, diarrhea, or fatigue.IV Vitamin C can be used safely along with chemotherapy and radiation therapy to treat cancer directly, decrease side effects from conventional treatments and increase treatment outcomes. Recent trials have demonstrated combined effectiveness of IV Vitamin C when used with Gemcitibine chemotherapy. Your Naturopathic Doctor at the Armstrong Clinic can answer more questions, and determine whether IV Vitamin C is the right therapy for you.

Now is the time to start forcing some of your favourite woody plant branches to bloom indoors ahead of schedule!

Forcing can be done as soon as the buds start to swell. Forsythia and pussy willow can be forced as early as February. It’s best to waituntilMarchforthemoredifficult-to-forceornamentals,suchas crabapples, magnolias and redbuds. Some of the traditional trees and shrubs to try also include: azalea, beautybush, flowering quince, rhododendron, serviceberry, spirea, witch hazel, and fruit trees such as cherries, pears and apples. Selectbranchescontaininground, plumpbudsflowerbuds, thenarrow, pointed buds are usually leaf buds. Make clean, slanting cuts 1 to 2 feet from the tips of branches with a sharp hand pruner. Selectively remove branches that won’t destroy the natural shape of the plant. If pruning fruit trees in late winter, gather some of the pruned material for forcing indoors. If possible, collect the branches when temperatures are above 0ºC. Set the branches in a tall container of water and place in a dimly lit, cool location. Spray or mist the branches two or three times a day to prevent the buds from drying out. Change the water in the container periodically during the forcing period to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi which could interfere with the absorption of water by the branches. When the flower budsbegin to open, move the branches into a bright room. Keep thefloweringbranchesoutofdirectsunlightand in a cool location to prolong the bloom period as they can last for weeks.

Ride Norfolk announces new stops at shopping centresSince the official launch of Ride Norfolk in early October, Norfolk County’s new public transportation has provided affordable, reliable bus service within and between Simcoe, Port Dover, Port Rowan, Delhi, and Waterford. Now, in response to public feedback, Ride Norfolk announcing changes aimed at providing better service and increasing its rapidly growing client base.

Ride Norfolk has added new stops at shopping centres across the county, and town loops have been closed. Beginning February 13, the bus will stop at Walmart, Zellers, and the Whitehorse Plaza in Simcoe; No Frills in Port Dover; and the

Waterford Plaza. A new stop in Langton on the Port Rowan route has also been added on Tuesdays and Thursdays. New schedules are available online at ridenorfolk.ca, or picked up in person at Norfolk County buildings and local libraries.

“Our community has been very vocal about what it wants, and we’re definitely listening,” said Public Transportation Coordinator Brad Smith. “As our ridership continues to grow and develop, we will adapt to its needs and offer improved and enhanced services.”

Ticket prices will remain steady at $2 for an in-town trip and $6 for a trip between communities, payable by cash only. Children under five years old will continue to ride

free. Tickets are available at any Norfolk County Public Library, and bulk ticket packages are also available.

The Ride Norfolk bus includes 12 seats, plus four additional standing spaces for a maximum capacity of 16 passengers at a time. The bus includes a wheelchair lift and can accommodate two wheelchair-bound passengers. Seat belts are also available as an added safety feature.

Ride Norfolk is funded

by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Sand Plains Community Development Fund, and Norfolk County. The transit system is currently in a trial run, and will be become permanent if demand dictates.

For more information on Ride Norfolk, visit ridenorfolk.ca or contact Public Transportation Coordinator Brad Smith at [email protected] or 519-428-3178.

By MARG WERDEN Will we never learn?Back in the mid-1800s, the Passenger Pigeon was believed to be the most numerous bird species on the planet with a population estimated to be around four or five billion. With that many of them flying around and darkening the skies, shooting a few for a pigeon pie or just for the heck of it, shouldn’t make much of a difference, right? Unfortunately, less than a century later, the last Passenger Pigeon died and the species was extinct!

Similar stories can be found for other species including the Great Auk, the Thylacine or Tasmanian Tiger, the Quagga (a type of zebra), the Caribbean Monk Seal, the Baiji River Dolphin, and, and, and. The list goes on and on. And lest you believe that this is “old news” and people “back then” didn’t know any better, think again. Some of these species have been driven to extinction within the last 20 to 30 years.

And we’re still at it, even here in Norfolk County, home to several endangered or at-risk species, including the Snapping Turtle. Despite the fact that the “Snapper” is listed both provincially and nationally as a species at risk, surprisingly it is still legal to hunt this turtle.

As Canada’s largest freshwater turtle, the Snapping Turtle plays an important role in the food chain as a scavenger because they eat both dead plants and animals, helping clean up the water. They also hunt fish, frogs, birds, snakes and other turtles. Although they can go for weeks without food, they will eat all they can when food is available. The Snapping Turtle swallows small prey whole, but uses its strong jaw and claws to tear larger prey to pieces.

Adult Snapping Turtles are relatively safe from most predators even though, unlike other turtles, the Snapping Turtle cannot “hide in its shell” when disturbed because its shell is too small. If attacked on land, it uses its long,

agile neck and powerful jaw to defend itself. However, although the Snapping Turtle can be quite aggressive on land, they are shy in the water and prefer to swim away when approached. Eggs and hatchlings, however, are more prone to predation by racoons, foxes, skunks, large birds and big fish.

The main threat to adult Snappers is humans. They are hunted for their meat and their eggs. Snapping Turtles can be legally hunted in Ontario with an allowable take of up to two snapping turtles per person, per day. The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) does not monitor this hunt, so there is no clear idea of how many are killed each year.

Although the Ministry of Natural Resources was asked to remove the Snapping Turtle from the game list in 2009, the government did not take action, stating that the hunt was sustainable. Considering that Snapping Turtles do not reach sexual maturity for 20 years and that only about seven of every 10,000 eggs laid make it to maturity, hunting these turtles, especially mature females, can only have a

detrimental effect on their long-term survival.

The Snapping Turtle evolved about 40 million years ago and walked the earth with the dinosaurs and then outlived them. Now, after a relatively short contact with humans, this species’ survival is being threatened. Once very common in this area, it has recently been declared a species at risk both federally and provincially. Threatened by hunting, habitat loss, and road mortality, the population of this species is in decline in Ontario.

Ontario Nature – Federation of Ontario Naturalists is working hard to try to protect the Snapping Turtle and the public can lend a hand. If you are a Facebook fan, search for the “Ontario Nature – Federation of Ontario Naturalists” page and “like” it. A generous donor will give Ontario Nature $1.00 for every new like, up to $1,000 to help the organization fund their campaigns.

There is also a petition that the public can print, sign and send to the Friends of Ontario Snapping Turtles to support the call to end

the hunting of this species. It can be found at http://www.ontarionature.

org/protect/campaigns/PDFs/frostpetition.pdf. The deadline for submitting signed petitions is February 15th, so act NOW to make your vote count!

It’s very sad to know that mankind is possibly the most destructive force on earth and has led to the extinction of so many species. Driving a species to extinction is nothing to be proud of and, unfortunately, it’s not slowing down yet. Will we wait until there are only a few Snapping Turtles left before we wake up and make a last-ditch attempt to bring them back from extinction? Let’s hope not.

Edward was the youngest son of Colonel Samuel Ryerse, born in Port Ryerse in 1800. Edward was very active in the militia and became Lt. Colonel of the Regimental Division of South Norfolk. About 1835 he built a brickyard to construct a two-story Georgian house nicknamed “The Old

Fort,” which still stands. Edward improved the harbour, built the first pier and the first four warehouses. Edward was a true Conservative and opposed liberalism in any form. A great patriot, he is said to have fired off a small cannon over Lake Erie every July 1 at “Those Yanks.”
