Now A KEURIG K-CUP RETAILER!The first store front independent KEURIG K-CUP retailer in Simcoe!

Mike’s nofrills and Port Dover KIA, were overwhelmed with the response of this year’s Christmas Toy Drive in the Port Dover area. When the drive finished they had easily surpassed their goal with more than enough toys to fill four KIA’s! The outpouring of the community was just another example of the commitment local

folks have to helping one another. The Port Dover Lifeline Food

Bank was one of the recipients of all the goodwill, along with local public and catholic schools, REACH and CAS.

Congratulations to both Port Dover KIA and Mike’s nofrills for helping local kids have a Christmas they will never forget!

Overwhelming respOnse!

by Dave ScottAs our winter athletes prepare

for the Olympic games in Sochi and with the amazing results from the games in Vancouver, you have to admit, we are one competitive country. Whom do we thank for our commitment and dedication? The parents, for one, who provided the opportunity for their children, plus the coaches, volunteers and trainers, all of who contribute to the success of our athletes.

Not all athletes will be professionals, but the lessons they learn will resonate for years and generations to come.

But when a child has no opportunity to participate in local sports, what then? Who provides the funds? How can we make it happen? Well one way locally is to support the Jumpstart Foundation through Simcoe Canadian Tire. Mary Taylor, store owner, has a long history of being involved in sports and in the days before her

Canadian Tire involvement she worked in recreation on the East Coast. I think every time we talk, it has some kind of sports reference. For her, getting kids

playing, is a mission she takes seriously.

We were chatting a while back about the upcoming winter games when we came up with the idea of Jumpstart the Games. Simcoe Canadian Tire will be hosting a fundraiser for Jumpstart during the Winter Olympics. Every day from February 7 until February 23, during business hours, someone will be working out. Everyone involved… local business people, dignitaries, organizations… will be doing an hour of physical fitness just inside the entrance (to the left) of Simcoe Canadian Tire. There will be a variety of equipment such as treadmills, bikes, elliptical machines. A schedule will be set up with changes every hour and participants will be asked to collect pledges for Jumpstart. Customers can also donate when they come to the store. Of course the big screen will be set up with the games on… all this to raise funds so local kids

can play the games they love. Local businesses are already signing up to do their part, so why don’t you? Call (519) 428-1777 for details. The great part is the funds raised stay locally!

About Canadian Tire Jumpstart (jumpstart.canadiantire.ca)

Canadian Tire Jumpstart is dedicated to removing barriers, so children can participate in organized sport and recreation.

We see it as equipping kids for life,

because participation in organized sport and recreation increases a child’s chance for success in life.

They discover and participate. They gain self-confidence. They develop self-esteem. They learn leadership skills. Their lives become richer. This is the power of Canadian Tire Jumpstart.

Since 2005, Canadian Tire Jumpstart has given 417,000 financially disadvantaged kids the chance to play.

Roulston’s Pharmacy held its annual staff Christmas party on December 7th, and employees and owners once again were very generous to the area food banks and Humane Society. We collected enough donations from the staff and company to fill the loading dock of our Norfolk Street store again this year. Recipients of the donations are the Port Dover Lifeline Food

Bank, Simcoe Caring Cupboard, Delhi Sharing Pantry, and the Simcoe and District Humane Society.

We also ran our second annual “Donate for a Discount” program from December 12 to 14th. This program gave customers the opportunity to donate to their local food bank in our store, and earn a discount in return (donate two items, receive a 5% discount, four items receive a 10% discount, and seven or more items receive a 15% discount). The donated items went to the food

bank in the town the store is located in (ie. items donated in our Simcoe locations stay in Simcoe, and go to the Caring Cupboard). We hope that this program is a huge success again this year!

We are so thankful to be a part of Norfolk County, and enjoy this opportunity to give back to the communities in which we are located. Our employees, owners, and customers provide amazing support to these initiatives, and we hope that we can continue to “make a difference” in Norfolk County.

NORFOLK HUB, January 2014 page 8

I have written about my old dog Rocky a few times over the last couple of years. Fourteen

year old Rocky is now reaching the end of his life; his physical body is deteriorating rapidly, especially his hind quarters. He has great difficulty getting up and down and going in and out of the 4 steps to our side yard. He has had a few accidents in the house and has lost his appetite. Rocky is a part of our family, a beloved pet and companion. I am sharing this not only because I am saddened by the fact that I will be losing my beloved pet soon but also to point out the ironic conversations that occur around this inevitable event. It seems like everybody and their sister has an opinion and shares it freely often with ferocious immediacy. ‘Put him out of his misery’, ‘You are cruel to let him live like this!’ I am waiting for the postman and the newspaper delivery girl to chime in. In this situation, Rocky has no voice, I am his voice and

I have to let him go and I will when I feel he is ready, this is a difficult decision.Why share this? I work in Eldercare. I work with seniors every day, but very few people ever talk openly about these issues. End of life decisions are talked about in hushed tones. Even as I write this I type gingerly so as not to offend anyone. Death is inevitable, we all know this, but yet talking about death is still taboo. I think it is time that we all rethought death a bit and the only way to do this is to talk about it. We have to stop viewing death as a failure and focus instead on a good life with a good death. André PicardWhen I give talks at nursing homes or at senior centre’s it is inevitable that I will be asked if assisted suicide is legal in Canada. It is not. Suicide is legal in Canada; physician-assisted suicide is illegal. You have rights as a dying person, but not the right to end your life assisted by the medical team, at least not yet, but nothing will change without a national conversation on death and dying. As it is now, these are your rights as a dying patient;

You have the Right to: To be fully informed of your treatment options. You have the Right to: Recognition of Pre-planned Treatment DirectivesYou have the Right to: Recognition of a Substitute decision makerYou have the Right to: A Second OpinionYou have the Right to: Pain and symptom managementYou have the Right to: Refuse TreatmentYou have the Right to: Discontinue Treatment (even if you agreed to it previously)You have the Right to: Refuse CPR (Do Not Resuscitate order (DNR)You have the Right to: Refuse food and drink (Voluntary Stopping of Eating and Drinking)

(Thank you to dyingwithdignity.ca for this information) Start with knowing your rights, talk to your physician, talk to your caregivers, write your

directives down, and inform other of your wishes. Start talking! Let’s take this death and dying taboo out of the closet and put it on the kitchen table, chew on it a bit and move forward. This conversation will never be as easy as opinions on a dying family pet, but not talking about it will never make the process better. You planned your life, start today to plan for good death.Dr. bruce Veltri operates Victoria eldercare, a non-medical home care agency matching exceptional care-givers with elderly seniors, to help them maintain independence and remain safely in their own home. Victoria eldercare is conveniently located in the new Roulston’s Wellness Centre on Donly Drive in Simcoe. ~ a time of Finding thingsseniOr sense

A new calendar is being used and fourteen is the year to

write on cheques - January 2014 is here! The festive season is over. It is a time to put things such as furniture back in place and also to put other things away; these other things could be presents, dog dishes, mats, furniture covers or gates that keep toddlers safe

and help the season to be more relaxed and enjoyable. And of course the tree and decorations are put back in their boxes. It is when these things are being put in their places that ‘the time of findings things’ happens. These things can bring back memories of people, times and events; they may bring a smile, a twinge of sadness, a reflective tear or even a sigh of longing of what might have been. And then, there are the things that bring up such questions as, “Who would ever wear it?” “What was this thing used for?” and finally, “What a waste of money?” Yes, it is a time when many things are found; they are found in closets, drawers, shelves, cupboards, toolboxes, craft kits, sheds, garages and any place things can be put. And, there is something each has in common, it is not being used and has not been used for some time! There can be

many reasons that they are not being used, including they need repair or a better tool has been developed. But now, when a good Canadian winter is setting in, and you are staying here for it, it is a good time to start doing something about these things! Family and friends should be considered, perhaps there is something they have always admired and it is one of the things to go; someone might be very happy to receive a ‘January gift’! It is also a good idea to make a list of groups that have fundraising events for causes or families and individuals that are needing support. Then contact someone in the group and tell them what you have. It is so surprising that in January these groups can be planning yard sales, bazaars and other events where these things might be needed. It is a good ‘winter project’, while at the same time getting

boxes filled with things that are not being used and that another person or family needs. Now everyone has a ‘rule of thumb’ about how long to keep something that is not being used; many use three years for this and it works ‘most of the time’!!

One Person’s Junk is another Person’s treasure!

six weeks learning about sewing from a pattern. Members learned about material selection, taking their measurements, calculating the cost to sew their project, and tracing their pattern to size from a multi-size pattern onto cereal box liners. After cutting out their pattern pieces, members started sewing their flannel pyjama pants. A serger was used for seam finishing. The pattern was modified to add pockets to hold an ipod or cell phone.

The sewing club completed with a mini fashion show for family and

friends on December 5, 7 pm, at OMAFRA building. Models Abby V., Caelan T., Caitlyn V., and Hannah W. enjoyed modelling their flannel pyjama pants. Guest 4-H member Katie H. was the emcee for the evening.

Guests were kept entertained with a sewing word search, guess how many spools of thread in the jar, how old is the antique singer sewing machine, and name the sewing accessories, complete with door prizes. The members and leaders provided the desserts and party punch, which were enjoyed by everyone. The evening concluded with a big thank you to the leaders Joan M. and Georgette A.

by Dave ScottThe Polar Bear Dip that started

out as a fundraiser for the new rink in Port Dover thirty-two years ago by the Swarts brothers, Chris and Shawn, just keeps chugging along! The two brothers retired from the dip after twenty-five years, but every New Year’s Day the two get together and organize the swim. They let their teenage kids do the swimming now! Oh the rink got built, but the dip took on a life of its own. This year donations received went to help with the new library in Port Dover.

Chris and Shawn were down at the beach early in the morning looking for the perfect entrance for the dip. Safety first! With all the ice, ladders were used to get in and

out of the water.Of course then at 1 pm sharp

the herd of folks, young and old, headed for the icy waters to kick off the New Year with the dip!

The crowd cheered as the folks hit the water and cameras were clicking everywhere!

Now the dip isn’t for everyone, but it is a unique experience if you are inclined to try. A few years ago Monica and I did it and I have to tell you, when you go under the water and come up, it is like all your senses are heightened. There is clarity to everything… a great way to start the new year!

Congratulations to all those that took the dip this year and Happy New Year!

by MaRg WeRDeNLocal Scouts and landowners answer Nature’s call

Nature’s Calling Environmental Education has teamed up with local Scouting groups and private and public landowners to build and install nesting structures for birds, bats and snakes in Norfolk County.

“We want to connect youth and families with nature and the outdoors and work with local landowners to enhance habitat for wildlife,” explained Nature’s Calling Executive Director Bernie Solymár. “The first part of this project involves the building of nesting boxes by the Lynn Valley and Backus Mill Scouting groups.”

Last Saturday, Scout leaders and older youth members of the organization met to cut out and assemble the nest box kits. “The younger kids will then put the kits together at one of their meetings,” Bernie said. “Then I already have 20 landowners, mostly private, but also the Nature Conservancy of Canada and the Long Point Basin Land Trust, who have agreed to have the boxes installed on their property.”

The installation of the boxes will

be part two of the project and then later in the summer, the Scouts and other youth will be taught how to monitor the boxes to see how they are being used. “We hope to feed into other local monitoring projects to report the wildlife we see,” Bernie stated.

The project was made possible by a Great Lakes Guardian Community Fund grant from the Ministry of the Environment. However, money alone was not going to get the boxes built; someone to put the boxes together was needed. “Once we received the grant, our first concern was how to make the boxes, but after talking to Scouters Mary Elder and Don Werden, they said they would have their members build them,” Bernie said. “Larry Hoyt was able to get us a good deal on the lumber from Townsend Lumber and then we were all set.”

The Scouts put together kits to make 30 Bluebird boxes, 15 each of Screech Owl, American Kestrel and Flying Squirrel boxes, as well as 10 Purple Martin boxes and 25 bat boxes.a Snowy (Owl) winter predicted

Although I have not yet seen one in the area, Snowy Owls are staging a massive, and possibly historic, irruption (an unusual and rapid increase in numbers) into the Great Lakes area and east to the

Atlantic Ocean. In fact one Snowy Owl has been spotted in Bermuda, more than 1,000 kilometres out in the Atlantic Ocean.

These large white owls, a favourite of Harry Potter fans, usually spend most of the year north of the treeline in Canada, Scandinavia and Siberia and only occasionally drift south to southern Canada and the northern United States, even in winter. However, in about one in four winters, the number of Snowy Owls that come south increases noticeably. The invasions are thought to be a result of variations in the food available to the birds in the Arctic. And although one would think that a scarcity of food may be the cause of the migrations, it may be the opposite. When lemmings, one of the main food sources for Snowy Owls, are abundant in the summer months, adults may produce large clutches of up to nine eggs. The high proportion of immature owls seen during the irruptions is evidence that this high productivity may be a major factor in the invasions.

In addition to rodents, Snowy Owls eat small water birds such as ducks and many of the owls that invade the Great Lakes and Atlantic coasts prey heavily on these birds, flying out over the water to hunt them, especially at dusk.

Look for Snowy Owls in open areas, as they prefer undisturbed beaches,

rocky jetties, sand dunes, open marshes, and extensive grasslands. Unfortunately as native grasslands have disappeared, Snowy Owls tend to gravitate to those open habitats that do remain. In many cases, these are found at airports, where these large birds can cause problems for the airplanes. As of Christmas Eve, officials at the Windsor International Airport had caught and relocated seven Snowy Owls and were trying to catch another one.and moving on from birds of the arctic to the birds of Hawai’i…

The Tuesday, January 14th meeting of the Norfolk Field Naturalists will feature Bird Studies Canada biologist Jody Allair presenting “Hawai’i: Birding the Endangered Species Capital.” This group of islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean has a large diversity of habitats that provide homes for a variety of birds. Unfortunately, however, Hawai’i is now considered the “endangered species capital” of the world with the most species at risk per square kilometre. The arrival of alien species and the mongoose and loss of habitat are just a few of the issues facing the native birds of this tropical paradise. Join the group at 7:30 pm at the Simcoe Seniors Centre, 89 Pond Street in Simcoe to learn more about this subject.

two Venturers from the 1st Waterford Venturer group, Lucy Whitbread (on left) and Dakota Potts, were among the Scouting members who helped assemble nesting box kits for the Nature’s Calling environmental education organization last weekend.

for more information.

A pneumatic generator physically delivers the shock wave to the skin, where it is transformed to

sound energy and delivered to the targeted area. The use of shock waves makes the treatment completely non-invasive and is well tolerated by patients. The effects of shock waves were discovered several decades ago after it was noticed swimmers in the Pacific Ocean were affected by the detonation of mines although they were well out of the blast radius. As the scientific community grew more understanding of the effects caused by shock waves, and medical technology advanced to a sufficient level, the medical profession was able to harness the power of shock waves for therapeutic uses. Radial Shockwave Therapy works by effectively breaking down tissue in a controlled manner to allow the targeted area to heal properly through the regeneration of blood vessels. It has shown to be successful in the treatment of chronic pain. Results can be felt after only one treatment with a large improvement becoming evident after a month’s worth of treatment, on average tissue regeneration takes place after three months. With Radial Shockwave Therapy, patients are in and out the door with treatments typically only taking between five to ten minutes.
