  • Danville, Virginia, native Jewel Hairston Almond graduated from Norfolk State University

(then Norfolk State College) in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science in elementary education. She

began her teaching career in Manassas, Virginia, and later moved to Raleigh, North Carolina,

with her husband of 43 years, Van Almond, who is also an NSU graduate. Almond taught there

for more than 28 years before retiring. Since her retirement, however, she has been called

upon to work with at-risk students, intervening in the areas of math and reading. She is

currently completing coursework to become re-certified in her field of expertise, and looks

forward to also obtaining certification to teach English as a Second Language.

Almond is a strong alumni supporter of Norfolk State, as a member of the Norfolk State

    University Alumni Association

(NSUAA), Secretary for the NSUAA Raleigh-Durham Alumni Chapter and NSUAA

Raleigh/Durham Community Support. She is always touched by the appreciation shown by

families in the community who receive Thanksgiving baskets and Christmas gifts.

Her community and volunteer involvement include the National Council of Negro Women,

Capital Area Section (Life Member); Bethune Achiever 2014; NAACP; Democratic Women of

Wake County; North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE); National Education

Association and Capital City Sertoma. Additionally, she works with the Childrens Ministry and

tends the precious garden of lilacs as part of the Senior Ministry at Wake Chapel Church.

Almond and her husband are the proud parents of two children and three grandchildren

    Sierra, Javon and Brooklynn Rose.
