T he week of September 14-18 was filled with anticipation and excitement as the final preparations were made for NSU’s 80th Anniversary Founders Day events held Thursday and Friday, Sept. 17 and 18. The week kicked off with Constitution Day, an event designed to commemorate the drafting and signing of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787. The event’s guest speaker was Stephanie N. Morales ’04, Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Portsmouth. Morales earned her bachelor’s degree at Norfolk State, graduating Magna Cum Laude and is the first woman to hold the position of Commonwealth’s Attorney for Portsmouth. The NSU Day of Giving, a 36-hour fundraising event started at noon on Sept. 17 and ended on Friday, the 18th at 11:59 p.m. The goal... raise $80,000! One of the more unusual events was the Green and Gold Run/Walk which rewarded the winners with a green and gold powder shower. Volunteers turned out to form NSU80 for an aerial photo that was taken on the campus green. Other Founders Day highlights included an interfaith breakfast featuring the Rev. Al Sharpton, the Founders Day address given by Dr. Patricia L. Stith, a carnival with fireworks and so much more! N orfolk State University’s accrediting body, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), notified Interim President and CEO Eddie N. Moore Jr. Tuesday, Dec. 8, that the university has satisfied all of the agency’s accreditation concerns and voted to remove NSU from the probation status. NSU is no longer under the accreditation sanction. Moore received the news while attending the SACSCOC annual meeting held in Houston, Texas. The SACSCOC Special Committee visited Norfolk State University October 13-15. The committee confirmed the contents of the university’s Second Monitoring Report that was submitted to SACSCOC in September. The outcome of the Committee’s assessment was that there were no recommendations for Norfolk State University based on their review – the best possible outcome for NSU. The university was placed on probation in December 2014, largely for administrative and procedural matters not related to the viability of the university’s academic programs. Norfolk State has been fully and continuously accredited since it first became eligible for accreditation in 1969. “Today’s news ensures that Norfolk State will continue toward improvement, growth and a culture of assessment,” said Moore. “Norfolk State University has emerged a much stronger institution; an institution well-positioned for a brighter future.” Moore also thanked students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of Norfolk State for their support. Homecoming was chocked full of events for students, faculty, staff, alumni and for those who love a good tailgate. There was music, a marketplace, seminars, luncheons, the parade and, of course, the big

football game (NSU Spartans -20 vs. Savannah State -17). Thousands of peopleparticipated in the events making Homecoming 2015 a grand affair and lettingthe NSU family know that the best is yet to come. Al Sharpton Speaksfor NSU Founders Day Breakfast

The Rev. Al Sharpton delivered the keynote address at Norfolk State University’s Founders Day breakfast held Sept. 18, in the NSU StudentCenter. The interfaith breakfast, Forging Onward through Education

and Service, was part of the university’s Founders Day activities and its 80th anniversary celebration.

Sharpton, who hosts Politics Nation on MSNBC and the syndicated radio show Keepin it Real, is the founder and president of the National Action Network (NAN), a not-for-profit civil rights organization headquartered in Harlem,New York. NAN has more than 60 chapters nationwide including a Washington,DC Bureau and regional offices across the country. In addition to his work withNAN and hosting television and radio programs, Sharpton is the author of TheRejected Stone: Al Sharpton and the Path to American Leadership, published inOctober 2013. The book is an intimate look at his own evolution fromneighborhood activist to a civil rights leader of national stature.

Norfolk State began offering a new online course this fall… the master’s degree in cybersecurity. The needfor cybersecurity professionals is at an all-time

high as the use of computers to commit crimes andwage attacks has increased. To help meet thedemand for highly trained and well-qualifiedcybersecurity professionals, Norfolk State isleading a $25 million effort, funded by theDepartment of Energy, to create a workforce development program to produce cybersecurity professionals insignificant numbers. The M.S. degree in cybersecurity is designed to focus oncomputer security to increase the pool of well-educated security professionals. Students will be prepared to apply their knowledge to defend against cyber threats and to use digital forensics to identify attackers.

New Chief of Police and Public Safety Appointed

Thirty-two-year law enforcement veteran Troy Covington has been selected as Norfolk State’s new Chief of Police andPublic Safety. He began his new job on July 20. Covington has been in law enforcement for more than three decades. He joined the U.S. Army as a military police officer in 1982,and served almost 10 years on active duty, leaving in 1992 as a desk sergeant. He continued serving his country as a reservist for an additional three years. Upon leaving active

duty, Covington became a Commonwealth of Virginia certifieddispatcher at Virginia State University. He later became a certified State Corrections Officer for the State of Virginia until he joined the Petersburg Bureau of Police in Petersburg, Virginia, on Jan. 3, 1993.

Covington is a graduate of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center’s LawEnforcement Managers Training Program and has numerous training certificatesand awards. He hails from Fayetteville, North Carolina. He has two daughters,three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Looking for a cool way to helpyour students with the Standardsof Learning tests? NSU’s

Creative Gaming and Simulation Labhas released Kwizopia, an SOL quizgame. Kwizopia uses the VirginiaDepartment of Education's releasedSOL tests for math and science to helpstudents practice the tests in a funway. Kwizopia randomly chooses thequestions and at the end of each quiz,a score card appears which the

student can then print and either keep or share with a teacher. Studentsin the third through eleventh grade canplay the game on their own or with afriend. The game is a product of amaster’s thesis by Walaa Mahmoud,who graduated from NSU in May 2015with a master’s degree in electronicsengineering. It updates a previousversion of the game, which the CGS Labalso developed.

Norfolk State’s ProcurementServices Departmentclaimed two of the seven

statewide Xcelerator Awards fromthe Commonwealth of Virginia’sDepartment of General Services.Eugene Anderson, director ofprocurement services, was awardedthe Career Achievement XceleratorAward. Winners in this categorymust be a long-time proponent ofprocurement and a leader in the growth of procurement function throughout hisor her career. The Procurement Services Department won the CollaborationXcelerator Award. The award recognizes a procurement team that hassuccessfully worked with another function from the same organization, or with anexternal agency or supplier to deliver a successful project or initiative. In thiscase, Procurement worked with the NSU Fine Arts Department and usedstudents to create artwork for its office suite.

Norfolk State Universityparticipated in the 16th AnnualWorldQuest competition held by

the World Affairs Council of HamptonRoads. The team competition testscompetitors' knowledge of internationalaffairs, geography, history, and currentevents, preparing young people for thechallenges and opportunities of the 21st Century.

The Hampton Roads competitionincluded four competition categories:high school, college, faculty andgeneral/business. Competing highschools included Maury, Tallwood,

Princess Anne, Cox and NorfolkAcademy. The colleges in attendanceincluded Christopher Newport, NorfolkState, Old Dominion and TidewaterCommunity College. In the studentcategory, NSU was represented byKynnecy Stubbs, Jackson Littlejohn,Jasmine Dunbar, Tyshera Chambersand Shameeka Price-Cleare. NSUfaculty competitors were Dr. DannyAdams, Dr. Page Laws, ProfessorMichael Cotter, Dr. William Alexander,Dr. Patrick Mbajekwe, Professor CarolPretlow, Dr. Kay Wright- Lewis and Dr.Soji Akomolafe.

College of Liberal Arts Signs MOUNorfolk State University and the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office formallysigned a partnership agreement November 24 that will allow liberal artsstudents interested in law enforcementthe chance to gain on-the-jobexperience through internships.Beginning in 2016, The NSU/Chesapeake Sheriff’s OfficeCadet/Internship Program will giveselected undergraduate studentsmajoring in sociology, psychology andpolitical science the opportunity to earninternship credit by participating in aSummer Basic Jailer Academy Program.

Day of Giving a Rousing SuccessNSU’s first-ever Day of Giving, a 36-hour,online fundraiser, reached and exceeded its goal! Launched during the Founders Daycelebration, it began at noon Thursday, Sept. 17 and ended at 11:59 p.m. Friday,Sept.18. The fast-and-furious event netted$92,500—exceeding its $80,000—due to the generosity of 380 donors and the power of social media. Thanks to all who gave.
