AMINISTRATIVE ACCOMPLISHMENTS AT WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY (CHAIR, DEPARTMENT OF SPEECH PATHOLOGY AND AUDIOLOGY),

1974 - 1983

Establishment of a Speech and Hearing Sciences Laboratory for research activities by students and faculty in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology. Development of a thesis option in the graduate programs in Speech Pathology and Audiology. Development of departmental research courses for undergraduate and graduate students. These courses have led to increased student interest and participation in research activities as well as to an increasing number of Master's theses. Elevation of the Speech Pathology-Audiology program (which was formerly part of the Department of Special Education) to departmental status. Expansion of clinical and research facilities in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology, including structural modifications to expand the Hearing Clinic and additional space for research laboratories used by faculty and students in the department. Re-establishment of clinical practicum opportunities at the WVU Medical Center for graduate students in Audiology. Reactivation of the graduate program in Audiology. Establishment of collaborative interaction between the faculties in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology and the WVU Medical Center Speech and Hearing Clinic. An increase in the number and diversity of course offerings, including required courses, in the undergraduate and graduate curricula in Speech Pathology and Audiology. Conversion of the undergraduate program in Speech Pathology and Audiology from a terminal degree to a pre-professional degree program. Establishment of a departmental committee structure to handle graduate affairs, undergraduate affairs, and clinical practicum and supervision matters pertaining to

both undergraduate and graduate students. Development of an externship system intended to provide off-campus clinical practicum experiences for students during their last semester of graduate studies. The externships provide students with a diversity of experiences and settings, and are intended to broaden their clinical exposure and training. Externships have been established in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and Ohio. Full accreditation of both the Speech Pathology and Audiology Master's degree programs at West Virginia University by the Education and Training Board (ETB), American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. An increase in the number of doctoral-level faculty in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology, from three full-time docoral-level faculty members in 1974 to eight full-time doctoral-level faculty in 1978. Recruitment of faculty members with a wide variety of interests and skills in speech-language pathology, audiology, and speech and hearing sciences, and representing a wide range of backgrounds and training programs, including the following: University of Iowa, University of Minnesota, University of Michigan, University of Oklahoma, University of Arizona, Ohio University, University of Pittsburgh, Western Michigan University, University of Arkansas, Purdue University, West Virginia University, State University of New York, University of Texas, University of Connecticut, and Syracuse University. Establishment of the WVU Summer Institute to serve the continuing education needs of speech-language pathologists and audiologists working in West Virginia. This institute consists of courses that can be used for renewal of state teacher certification as well as for general refresher purposes. Development of an Undergraduate Student Handbook and a Graduate Student Handbook to provide students with information concerning departmental curricular requirements and regulations, including courses, clinical practicum, grade point average maintenance, comprehensive examinations, etc. Establishment of journal clubs to encourage research activities among departmental faculty and students and to increase awareness of current issues in speech-language pathology, audiology, and speech and hearing sciences. Establishment of an ongoing departmental program evaluation project based on responses from graduates and their employers to questionnaires designed to provide feedback on program effectiveness in achieving the planned goal of producing qualified speech-language pathologists and audiologists. Specifically, the evaluation instruments attempt to determine if the competencies that are currently within the design format of the training program are adequate and appropriate in providing graduates with the necessary skills to function properly in a clinical setting. From the results of graduates' and employers' responses it is determined if modifications are necessary in the

departmental curriculum. Development of an ongoing evaluation project to assess the quality and effectiveness of the externship system for students. This evaluation project consists of two questionnaires, one for student externs and one for cooperating agencies. Included in both questionnaires are items intended to determine ways to strengthen the clinical experiences of student externs at each site. Initiation of the Student-Faculty Communication Committee, a departmental standing committee composed of faculty members and student members representing sophomore, junior, senior, and graduate student classes. The purpose of this committee is to provide clarifications of departmental policies and requirements as well as for discussions of any problems encountered by students. This committee, developed not as a result of any particular problems but rather as a mechanism to avoid such problems from arising, helps to assure open lines of communication and cooperation between the faculty and student body in the department. Initiation of a departmental colloquium series consisting of nationally recognized guest speakers who make one-day presentations on contemporary topics in speech-language pathology, audiology, and speech and hearing sciences. Initiation of involvement by departmental faculty and students in the activities of the University Affiliated Center for Developmental Disabilities (UACDD) at West Virginia University, a center which provides interdisciplinary training, exemplary services, and technical assistance projects to serve evelopmentally disabled persons in West Virginia and the surrounding area. Initiation of a doctoral degree program in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology, including the establishment of admissions criteria as well as curriculum, committee, qualifier, and comprehensive examination regulations and procedures. The adopted requirements are based on the responses to a national survey of all doctoral programs in speech pathology and audiology in the United States conducted by the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology at West Virginia University.
