Nortech Oil & Gas has recently completed an accommodation upgrade project on a North Sea offshore facility which provided an additional 24 beds comprising of six pre-engineered modules.

The project was executed without disruption to operations or further restrictions to POB and was commissioned within 14 months of contract award.

The key features of the project which helped to ensure a successful outcome are:

• 3-D modelling of all new equipment including 3rd party supplied items

• Laser surveys of existing steelwork & utilities• Dedicated (ring fenced) Engineering task team• 3-D constructability studies• Comprehensive site survey(s) by Nortech engineers• Trial build and match-mark of main structural steel (on-shore)• Fully integrated P6 schedule• Nortech management of critical interfaces:

• Vendors• Fire/Gas Integration• H/VAC Integration• Incumbent Contractors

• Constant liaison with operations, construction and client project teams

• Formal Hazard & Risk analysis – HAZOP/HAZID

The new blast resistant accommodation modules are now fully operational and helping to alleviate the constant POB issues suffered by the platform, the forecast TIC for the project equates to a cost per bed significantly lower than the industry norm.

In this instance, after successfully completing a FEED study, Nortech were awarded the Detail Design phase, to replace the existing Produced water Caisson. The recommendation of the FEED study was to replace the Caisson using a topsides, ‘cold work’ solution.

In order to ensure full operability during the construction phase, a ‘three stage project’ approach was adopted.

The stages are as follows:

1. Provision of temporary produced water overboard dump line.

2. Working from a semi-permanent platform at EL. +10.5 - Removal of existing Caisson.

3. Working from a semi-permanent platform at EL. +10.5 - Installation of new Caisson.

The design of the temporary overboard dump line ensured that the operability and compliance of the existing Produced Water system was maintained. A temporary working platform and runway beam was designed at the spider deck level to facilitate destruct and construct activities. In the Caisson installation, to eliminate time consuming ’hot work’ the Project team adopted a ‘cold work’ industry proven mechanical connector solution.

Case Study: Caisson Replacement

Nortech are delivering a wide range of Caisson Replacements from studies to complete projects across a number of North Sea offshore facilities via a multi discipline engineering team.

A typical example of the works, include the following:

• Produced Water – debottlenecking and separation improvements to the produced and ballast water skimmer tanks, upgrades to pipework and control of the flotation cells, a new skimmed oil collection header and new skimmed oil transfer pumps to return oil to the first stage separators.

• Hot Water – Replacement of the existing diesel heaters with a modern electric equivalent, with all associated upgrades to pipework, instrumentation and electrical supplies. Scope also included all sub-supplier management and procurement, such as expediting, inspection etc.

• Potable Water – removal of the need for supply boat potable water and installation of a suitable Reverse Osmosis unit (RO), with associated upgrades to the piping, instrumentation and electrical supplies. Scope also included all sub-supplier management and procurement, such as expediting, inspection etc.

• Firewater Ringmain and Deluge – Firepump modifications, investigation and recommendation into the most suitable options for the new firewater ringmain and deluge systems, full design of a lower demand, simplified firewater ringmain and deluge system including valve sets.

• Control Systems Upgrade – including wireless field network and PCSS improvements.

Case Study: Late Life Extension Project Nortech are delivering a wide range of late life extension (LLX) projects to North Sea offshore facilities via a dedicated multi discipline engineering team structured to meet the technical requirements of a schedule and cost driven refurbishment, modification and upgrade programme.

The existing site is a LPG storage and Gas Production Plant (GPP) handling both butane and propane, with a low pressure water sealed gas holder and gas boosting facility in the centre of St Helier. The main drivers for the project were to improve security of supply and remove the need for the gas holder, which was decommissioned in 2012, and free the land for potential redevelopment.

The project consisted of significant upgrades and modification to the existing site, including:

• New skid mounted gas making modules (Vaporisers)• Air blowers• New hot water boilers• Aftercooler modules• New plant/process air supply• Civil/Structural works – including foundations, boiler

house, field equipment (control) room• Upgrading the existing deluge system• Pipework – LPG supply, hot water, process air, mixed

gas, deluge• Electrical – electrical supplies to the new equipment• Instrumentation – New control system and control

philosophy

An identified Blast Furnace Reline was seen as an opportunity to make some significant improvements. The concept was to provide a level casthouse floor which will provide improved access for vehicles and personnel.

The existing casthouse floor primary and secondary support steelwork required to be replaced to accommodate the revised design of the main iron runner, secondary iron runner and slag runner design. In addition the existing fume extraction system required improvement to provide improved working conditions and environmental requirements.

In addition, new TMT taphole machinery were also included within the redesign of the casthouse Floor i.e. taphole drill, taphole gun and main iron cover manipulator. The design and layout of the new casthouse floor used 3D modelling to aid client understanding of the revised layout and to generate the detailed fabrication drawings.

The project considered changes and modifications to the existing plant equipment including:

• Main Iron Runner• Secondary Iron Runner• Slag Runner• Runner Covers• INBA Runner• Fume Extraction• Taphole Drill• Taphole Gun• Cover Manipulator

Case Study: Tata Steel Scunthorpe, Queen Anne Casthouse Floor

Paul Wurth Luxembourg were contracted to undertake a complete redesign of the Queen Anne Blast Furnace Casthouse Floor at Tata Steel Scunthorpe.
