Product Brief

Voice, data, and wireless service providers are in a continu-

ous race with their competition to evolve their networks to

deliver new services and create new business opportunities.

The challenge is to get the most from the existing network

and seamlessly scale it to support growth, while at the

same time leverage next-generation technologies to

develop new revenue streams.

What makes the Passport20000 exceptional? Reliability, scalability, evolution flexibility, and platform integration are integral to the Nortel NetworksPassport 20000 design—making itoptimal for the challenges of today’sservice provider networking environ-ment. (Figure 1)

Reliability Passport 20000 is designed to meet themost stringent service provider’s carrier-grade requirements, protect service revenue, and provide peace of mindthrough the industry’s most compre-hensive suite of reliability features.

These features include equipment protection, quick and accurate faultdetection, robust networking features, and in-service software upgrades.

As service providers move mission-critical traffic over a packet-basedinfrastructure, they require guaranteednetwork reliability. Passport has aproven track record for ensuring customer network uptime.

Passport 20000 offers high node avail-ability through fully redundant, “hot-swappable” common equipment. Inaddition, a wide selection of optionalline and equipment protection redun-dancy schemes are available, including

1+1(inter-card and intra-card) SONETAPS/SDH MSP and 1:1 or 1:N redun-dancy for all electrical ATM, FrameRelay, and voice function processors.

Networking reliability, resiliency, andoptimization are achieved throughintelligent features, such as PNNIEdge-based Rerouting, and MPLS HotStandby LSPs (label switched paths).

Passport also is designed to protectservice revenue by eliminating one ofthe largest contributors to network andnode downtime through the support of hitless software migration, whichenables connections to be maintainedduring software upgrades.

Scalability

Passport 20000 enables service providersto scale their networks to support con-siderable growth—extending the valueof today’s systems and infrastructure.

Designed to support up to 160 Gbps of useable switch capacity, the Passport20000 introduces a new paradigm—anevolvable switch that gracefully scales. This flexibility enables service providersto cost effectively grow their networksat their own pace.

The Passport 20000 provides theindustry’s most diverse array of bothphysical and logical interface connec-tivity to address numerous networkingconfigurations, supporting interfacespeeds from DS-0 to OC-192/STM-64,including 10-Gbps interfaces forPacket over SONET (POS), ATM,and Gigabit Ethernet.

Evolution flexibility Service providers often find it difficultto decide what technology they shoulduse when evolving their network. Willthe network evolution be based onATM or Multiprotocol Label Switching(MPLS)? In many cases the answer isboth, depending on the application. What about integrating at the opticallayer to reduce network complexityand cost? No matter which direction is chosen, Passport 20000 can be usedto seamlessly evolve the network.

Passport 20000 is the industry’s onlytrue multiservice switch supporting awide variety of revenue-generating ser-vices, including: Frame Relay, ATM,IP, IP-VPNs, Layer 2 VPNs, MPLS,wireless, voice and circuit emulation—unsurpassed in the industry.

Service providers can capitalize onPassport’s proven history of scalinglarge networks. Many of the world’slargest multiservice networks are builton the Passport platform.

With Passport 20000, service providerscan scale their existing revenue-generat-ing multi-service infrastructure throughincreased switch capacity and higherspeed trunking function processors.Optimized for deployment at the net-work core, Passport 20000 offers afourfold increase in maximum useablefabric capacity over the Passport 15000,supports an impressive series of 10-Gbps interfaces, and provides wire-rate performance for IP/MPLSframe-based traffic.

Passport 20000 can also be deployed asan MPLS gateway capable of support-ing multi-service traffic directly over an MPLS-based core network. Thisapproach enables service providers toevolve their multi-service networkswith a smooth, seamless transition to IP/MPLS based architectures.Nortel Networks has a long history in supporting MPLS on the Passportproduct line and driving industryMPLS standardization.

Many service providers are now contem-plating network convergence at theoptical layer. Passport 20000 can beused in switched optical networks as an Optical UNI Client that providessignaling connections directly over the optical layer. This enables ongoinghigh-capacity networking over ATM to directly interwork with the optical core, thus reducing network and operational complexity.

Platform integration Passport 20000 is a seamless evolutionof the Passport family. From its incep-tion, Passport 20000 supports theentire suite of function processors fromthe Passport 15000, offering industry-leading service and sparing flexibility.

Designed to run the same PassportCarrier Release (PCR) software streamas the rest of the Passport portfolio,Passport 20000 delivers seamless inte-gration into existing OSS systems.

The Passport 20000 expands core networking capabilities (Multi-Service over ATM or Multi-Serviceover MPLS) while maintaining fullbackwards-compatibility support fortraditional protocols, i.e. ATM, IP,Frame Relay, Circuit Emulation, and Voice.

Passport 20000 uses the same opera-tional efficiency tools that are currentlyin use on today’s Passport networks—empowering service providers to create, implement, and manage high value, in-demand, revenue-generating applications.

Comprehensive network management Passport 20000 uses Nortel NetworksPreside network management system, which includes the Preside MultiserviceData Manager—an open, flexible network management system thatprovides management applications forfacilitating revenue generation and costcontrol. With Preside MultiserviceData Manager, service providers cantake advantage of comprehensive faultmanagement, simplified end-to-endprovisioning, and detailed configura-tion management for high quality customer care.
