Please read all instructions before beginning. Pre-washing recommended for hand dyes only. Pre-washing NOT

recommended for panels and prints.

Yardages and Cutting WOF is width of fabric from selvage edge to selvage edge. LOF is length of fabric, parallel to the selvage edges.

1 Moonlit Birds panel • Fussy-cut (1) 18 1/2" x 22 1/2" rectangle and

(4) 8 1/2" x 10 1/2" rectangles, keeping birds

centered.

1 Springtime Babies panel • Fussy-cut (8) 8 1/2" x 10 1/2" rectangles, keeping

animals centered.

1 3/4 yards bird print • Fussy-cut (1) 6 1/2" x 50 1/2" LOF strip with owls

centered.

• Fussy-cut (1) 6 1/2" x 50 1/2" LOF strip with loons

centered.

• Fussy-cut (2) 6 1/2" x remaining WOF strips with

swans centered.

• Fussy-cut (2) 6 1/2" x remaining WOF strips with

Canada geese centered.

3/4 yard animal print • Fussy-cut (4) 6 1/2" squares with animal(s)

centered.

1 yard dark brown hand dye • 3 strips 2 7/8" x WOF; cut into (40) 2 7/8" squares.

• 8 strips 2 1/4" x WOF for binding.

1 1/4 yards tan hand dye • 16 strips 2 1/2" x WOF; cut into (8) 22 1/2" strips,

(12) 12 1/2" strips, (22) 10 1/2" strips and (2)

8 1/2" strips.

1 1/4 yards cream hand dye • 3 strips 2 7/8" x WOF; cut into (40) 2 7/8" squares.

• 12 strips 2 1/2" x WOF; cut into (4) 26 1/2" strips,

(4) 22 1/2" strips, (2) 14 1/2" strips, (2) 10 1/2"

strips, (16) 6 1/2" strips, (8) 4 1/2" strips and

(28) 2 1/2" squares.

5 1/8 yards of 42" backing fabric • 2 strips 90" x WOF

OR

2 1/2 yards wide backing fabric • 1 piece 82" x 90"

Batting • 1 piece 82" x 90"

Piecing the Blocks Use a 1/4" seam allowance for all stitching. Press all seams as directed.

1. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each 2 7/8" cream square.

2. Place a marked square right sides together with a 2 7/8" dark brown square. Sew 1/4" on each side of the

line. Cut on the marked line. Press open with seams to the dark brown side to complete (2) 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" triangle

units. Repeat to make 80 triangle units.

Triangle Units — Make 80

3. Referring to the diagrams, join 2 triangle units to make a 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" triangle strip. Press seam to the dark

brown side. Repeat to make 20 triangle strips. Repeat to make 20 reversed triangle strips, turning each unit as shown.

Triangle Strips — Make 20 of each

4. Sew a 2 1/2" x 14 1/2" cream strip between a triangle strip and reversed (R) triangle strip to make a 2 1/2" x

22 1/2" side strip. Press seams toward the cream strip. Repeat to make a second side strip. Stitch the strips to the long

sides of the 18 1/2" x 22 1/2" bird panel rectangle to make the 22 1/2" x 22 1/2" center row. Press seams toward the

panel rectangle.

5. Stitch a 2 1/2" x 10 1/2" cream strip between a triangle strip and reversed (R) triangle strip. Press seams

toward the cream strip. Add a 2 1/2" cream square to each end to make the 2 1/2" x 22 1/2" top row. Press seams

toward the squares. Repeat to make the bottom row. Sew the rows to the top and bottom of the center row to

complete the 22 1/2" x 26 1/2" Large Paw block. Press seams toward the center row.

Large Paw Block

6. Sew a 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" cream strip to the cream end of 4 triangle strips to make (4) 2 1/2" x 10 1/2" side strips

Press seams toward the cream strips. Stitch the side strips to the long sides of (2) 8 1/2" x 10 1/2" bird panel

rectangles to make (2) 10 1/2" x 12 1/2" center rows. Press seams toward the panel rectangles.

7. Stitch a 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" cream strip to the cream end of a reversed (R) triangle strip and a 2 1/2" cream square

to the dark brown end to make a 2 1/2" x 12 1/2" top/bottom row. Press seams toward the cream strip and square.

Repeat to make 4 top/bottom rows. Sew the strips to the top and bottom of the center rows to complete (2) 12 1/2" x

14 1/2" Medium Paw A blocks. Press seams toward the center rows.

Medium Paw A Block — Make 2 Medium Paw B Block — Make 2

8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 to make 2 Medium Paw B blocks, using reversed (R) triangle strips on the sides of the

bird panel rectangles and triangle strips on the top and bottom.

9. Sew a 2 1/2" cream square to the cream end of 4 reversed (R) triangle strips to make (4) 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" side

strips. Press seams toward the cream squares. Stitch the side strips to the right and left sides of (2) 6 1/2" animal

squares to make (2) 6 1/2" x 10 1/2" center rows. Press seams toward the squares.

10. Stitch a 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" cream strip to the cream end of a triangle strip and a 2 1/2" cream square to the dark

brown end to make a 2 1/2" x 10 1/2" top/bottom row. Press seams toward the cream strip and square. Repeat to

make 4 top/bottom rows. Sew the rows to the top and bottom of the center rows to complete (2) 10 1/2" x 10 1/2"

Small Paw A blocks. Press seams toward the center rows.

Small Paw A Block — Make 2 Small Paw B Block — Make 2

11. Repeat steps 9 and 10 to make 2 Small Paw B blocks, using triangle strips on the sides of the animal squares

and reversed (R) triangle strips on the top and bottom.

Piecing the Panel & Border Units Refer to the Exploded Quilt Diagram as needed throughout the following steps.

1. Side Panel Units: Sew a 2 1/2" x 8 1/2" tan strip to the bottom of an 8 1/2" x 10 1/2" animal panel rectangle.

Press seam toward the tan strip. Add a second animal panel rectangle to the bottom to make an 8 1/2" x 22 1/2"

pieced strip. Press seam toward the tan strip. Repeat to make a second pieced strip.

2. Stitch a 2 1/2" x 22 1/2" tan strip to the long sides of the pieced strips and a 2 1/2" x 12 1/2" tan strip to the

top and bottom to complete (2) 12 1/2" x 26 1/2" side panel units. Press seams toward the tan strips.

3. Top/Bottom Panel Units: Sew (2) 8 1/2" x 10 1/2" animal panel rectangles alternately together with (3) 2

1/2" x 10 1/2" tan strips to make a 10 1/2" x 22 1/2" pieced strip. Press seams toward the tan strips. Repeat to make a

second pieced strip.

4. Stitch a 2 1/2" x 22 1/2" tan strip to the long sides of the pieced strips to make (2) 14 1/2" x 22 1/2"

top/bottom panel units. Press seams toward the tan strips.

5. Side Border Units: Sew a 2 1/2" x 26 1/2" cream strip between (2) 2 1/2" x 12 1/2" tan strips to make a 2

1/2" x 50 1/2" pieced strip. Press seams toward the tan strips. Repeat to make 4 pieced strips.

6. Sew the pieced strips to the long sides of the 6 1/2" x 50 1/2" bird print strips. Press seams toward the bird

print strips. Stitch a 2 1/2" x 10 1/2" tan strip to the top and bottom of each strip to complete the 10 1/2" x 54 1/2"

side border units. Press seams toward the tan strips.

7. Top/Bottom Border Units: Stitch (2) 6 1/2" x remaining WOF bird print strips (swans centered) short ends

together to make a long strip, matching print at the seam as much as possible. Press seam to one side. Trim to 42 1/2"

to make the top strip. Repeat with the remaining bird print strips (Canada geese centered) to make the bottom strip.

8. Stitch a 2 1/2" x 22 1/2" cream strip between (2) 2 1/2" x 10 1/2" tan strips to make a 2 1/2" x 42 1/2" pieced

strip. Press seams toward the tan strips. Repeat to make 4 pieced strips.

9. Sew a pieced strip to the long sides of the top and bottom bird print strips and 2 1/2" x 10 1/2" tan strips to

the ends to make the 10 1/2" x 46 1/2" top/bottom border units. Press seams toward the bird print strips.

Completing the Quilt Refer to the Exploded Quilt Diagram as needed throughout the following steps.

1. Stitch a side panel unit to the long sides of the Large Paw block to make the 26 1/2" x 46 1/2" center row.

Press seams toward the panel units.

2. Sew a Medium Paw A block to the left end of the top panel unit and a Medium Paw B block to the right end

to make the 14 1/2" x 46 1/2" top section. Press seams toward the panel unit. Stitch the remaining Medium Paw B

block to the left end of the bottom panel unit and the remaining Medium Paw A block to the right end to make the

bottom section. Press seams toward the panel unit. Sew the top and bottom sections to the top and bottom of the

center row to complete the 46 1/2" x 54 1/2" quilt center. Press seams toward the top and bottom sections.

3. Stitch the side border units to the long sides of the quilt center. Press seams toward the border units.

4. Sew a Small Paw A block to the left end of the top border unit and a Small Paw B block to the right end to

make the 10 1/2" x 66 1/2" top border. Press seams toward the border unit. Stitch the remaining Small Paw B block

to the left end of the bottom border unit and the remaining Small Paw A block to the right end to make the bottom

border. Press seams toward the border units. Stitch the borders to the top and bottom of the quilt center to complete

the top. Press seams toward the borders.

5. If using 42" backing fabric, remove the selvage edges from the backing pieces. Join the pieces on the long

edges with a 1/2" seam allowance. Press seams open. Trim the edges to make an 82" x 90" backing piece.

6. Layer the top with the backing and batting pieces. Quilt as desired. Trim batting and backing even with the

top.

7. Join the dark brown hand-dye binding strips on the short ends with diagonal seams to make a long strip.

Press seams in one direction. Press the strip in half along the length with wrong sides together.

8. Bind the quilt edges using your favorite method to complete the quilt.
