    Serotta Maddocks Evans,

    CPAs sponsored A.M. Con-

    nection at the North Augusta

    Community Center at 7:15

    a.m. on March 28, 2012. Cour-

tesy of the sponsor and Als

    Family Restaurant, members

    and guests enjoyed bacon,

eggs, and biscuits with a selec-

    tion of morning beverages. Leo

    Brooker inspired the gathering

    with the invocation and Pledge

    of Allegiance recitation.

    Representing Ft. Gordon,

    Georgia, Alia Naffouj pre-

    sented first quarter awards for

    service members and civilians.

    SFC Oakley received the NCO

of the first quarter award, Mrs.

    Campbell received the civil-

ian of the first quarter award,

    and Mr. Chatfield received the

    volunteer of the first quarter

    award. Subsequently, Rebecca

    Plankey addressed the group,

    highlighting the benefits of

good accounting year round, not just during tax season.

    In conjunction with the

    Community Service and

    Partnerships with Business,

    guest presenters from North

    Augusta High Schools FBLA

    program unveiled two of their

    schools collaborative projects

    that have improved the

lives of teens in the North

    Augusta area. FBLA students

    Kaylee Gough, Paul Liner,

    and Kyler Childs first spoke

    about North Augusta Highs

    implementation of a Freshman

    Academy in order to acclimate

incoming freshman to thehigh school experience. The

    academy will allow new high

    school students a separate

    wing for their classrooms

and lockers, so they can slowly

    adjust to their new educational

    and social demands.

    During the second presen-

    tation, FBLA students Will

    Harley, Matthew Larry, and

    Hannah Reese revealed their

    groundbreaking plan for end-

    ing bullying in the community.

    Project TAB (Teaching Ado-

    lescents & Adults about Bul-

    lying) aims to inform students

and adults of all ages about

    the dangers of bullying and

    its impediment to learning.

    Reaching out to elemen-

    tary, middle, and high school

    students in the area, Project

    TAB helps young people

    recognize different types of

    harassment including cyber

    bullying, which has been

    increasingly in the media, and

    find effective ways of deterring

    it. The students emphasized

    the key difference between tat-

    tling and telling; while tattling

seeks to get another child into

trouble, telling seeks to pre-vent physical or mental harm

    to oneself or others. North

    Augusta Highs FBLA is sure

    to save students and parents

    the heartache felt nationwide

    from bullying in recent years.

    Brian Tucker concluded the

    event with an invitation for

    members to consider being

part of the new Shop, Dine,

    Stay & Play brochure, which

    will guide residents, prospec-

    tive residents, and visitors

    to the great local businesses

    of North Augusta. Lastly,

    ambassadors Rechelle Dallas

and Kathy Williamson pre-sented door prizes, courtesy

    of Serotta Maddocks Evans,

    CPAs and Bushs on Pine

    Grove. The North Augusta

    Chamber would like to thank

    all sponsors and participants.

    call Rechelle

    at 803-279-2793.

    To one degree or another,

we are all creatures of habit.

We all have a certain way we

do things. We have a certain

    morning routine, we have a

    normal process by which we

    address problems or make

decisions, we have certainlikes and dislikes, and in

    some cases, the only reason

    we dont like something is

    because its different from our

    version of normal. We dont

    like to change. Humans are

    creatures of habit.

All this being said, I need

to tell you something, and to

many, its a secret: The world

    we live in is changing

    fast. Technological advances

    are occurring so rapidly that

    our society cant really keep

up. Our workforce is a prime

example. I read a factoid last

week that stated that the top10 jobs in-demand in 2010

    didnt even exist in 2004,

    which means that we should

    be preparing students for jobs

that do not even exist yet.

Are you able to keep up?

    According to Ray Kurzeil

    in a 2008 interview The

    computer in your cell phone

today is a million timescheaper and a thousand times

    more powerful and about

    a hundred thousand times

    smaller than the one computer

at MIT in 1965. So what

used to fit in a building now

    fits in your pocket...what

fits in your pocket now will

fit inside a blood cell in 25

    years. This quote is from

    2008, which means this is

even old news! Are you even

    trying to keep up?

    Technological advances

    have changed the world, but

the rate of the advances is

redefining the world, as weknow it. The technology at

    our disposal today makes it

just as easy to be a global

    business as a corner store-

    front.

    The real question is what

are you doing to use these

    tools to grow your business.

    How are you harnessing these

resources to move into newmarkets, strengthen your

    grip on your existing mar-

kets? How are you using the

    technology available to you

    to increase the quantity and

    the quality of your relation-

ships? There is no such thing

    as business as usual. You

either keep up or get left

    behind. I can continue the

clichs all day, but I hope you

    get the point.

    Are you watching from the

sideline or trying to figure out

    how to make your business

work on-line or at least make

your business more efficient, more visible, and more profit-

    able.
