United States Prohibition

• Nationwide ban on the production and sale of alcohol.

• Remained in place from 1920 to 1933.• Prohibition did not stop the citizens from

distilling and drinking alcohol

Prohibition

• Instead created an underground distilling and distribution society.

• One of which began in the rural foothills of the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina.

Moonshine

• Defined as a high proof distilled spirits• Gets name because it was distilled at night “by

the light of the moon” to avoid detection by law enforcement.

• Illegal because moonshiners did not pay state or federal taxes on liquor.

Beginning of Nascar

• Bootleggers vs Law Enforcement• Modify car engines to “outrun the law”• Rivalries formed amongst bootleggers• Raced on mountain roads
