Keane headed up the Finance section and was a particularly popular member of staff. A retirement party was held for him in County Hall last Tuesday evening, 28th February and was attended by a large gathering of his friends and colleagues in the local authority. Originally from Listowel in Co Kerry, and now domiciled in Ashbourne, he is an avid Kerry GAA supporter and goes to see them at every opportunity. “I have seen some great players wear the green and gold over the years, but Jack O’Shea was the greatest of them all,” he said. At the last full Council meeting last month, trib- utes flowed from all sections of the Chamber and everyone was full of praise for the budgets and other work presented by Pat in the course of his work. He was also renowned for his dry sense of humour and County Mayor, Gerry McGuire recalled the visit of All Ireland cham- pions, Dublin to County Hall, with the Sam Maguire Cup at the end of last year. “The place was festooned in blue and navy, but a Kerry flag mysteriously made it’s way into the famed cup. All eyes turned to Pat, who had a mischievous look on his face,” he said. He started work with Kerry County Council and four years later moved to Dublin, where he took up a similar position with Dublin County Council. He remained with them until the forma- tion of Fingal County Council in 1994. He has always been involved in finance and his motto is simplicity itself - “You can’t spend what you haven’t got.” Pat is a keen golfer and is a member of Elm Green Golf Club and is now in an ideal position to reduce his handicap. In his time at the local authority, he served under four County Managers, Davie Byrne, Willie Soffe, John Tierney and David O’Connor. His attention to detail and keen wit will be sorely missed by all. See story on page 3 Local Chambers Get Ready For Year Ahead The five local Chambers of Commerce in the North County are in the process of getting themselves ready for what many analysts believe will be a challenging year ahead for many of their members. Working closely with it’s members, the Chambers are constantly reviewing and updating policies to promote, lobby and influence the decision-makers on all matters of concern to local business. They are always active in encouraging and nurturing new and established businnesses in their areas. Fingal Dublin Chamber and Balbriggan Chamber held their annual AGM’s last Thursday, 1st March and vowed to continue the great work of the previous chambers. CEO, Tony Lambert said, “The year ahead promises to be both exciting and challenging for our chamber, with a new structure and a council of 30 members to guide the chamber. We will be building a stronger, more sustainable structure to represent busi- nesses.” Lambert continued, “For many businesses, the chamber is an essential part of their companies. We provide many unique networking opportuni- ties for business men and women in the North County area,” he concluded. The Balbriggan and District Chamber AGM was well attended by members wishing to hear about the Chamber’s perfor- mance in 2011 A new Executive Council was the community for the benefit of community activity. We are fully supportive of commu- nity events, as we know that any contri- bution we can make will come back to the benefit of all,” he said. The Malahide AGM will be held at the end of March in conjunction with the Business Awards, and this year, they are looking for a new President as Al Ryan’s term ends in March. He had one final rallying call for all chamber members when he said, “We need to remind ourselves that not all is bad out there and there are strong posi- tive things happening. The hard times can sometimes bring out the best in people and we need to look after each other,” he concluded. Likewise, Skerries Chamber will hold their AGM at the end of this month and President Martin Scully was very upbeat about the prospects for the year. “We are planning our St Patrick’s Day parade and thereafter, we have great plans for a community garden in the town which will benefit everyone. It will be a trying year Contd. on page 9 elected along with Executive Officers. Joe English the outgoing President was succeeded by Kevin Tolan who said, “I am looking forward to working with the newly elected Executive Committee. We have much hard work to do to combat the difficult economic climate, but I believe Balbriggan Chamber has a pivotal role in achieving continued success for Balbriggan.’ Malahide Chamber have announced a new arrival in the form of their redesigned Chamber website which is now on-line. President Al Ryan told the County Leader : “We try to play our part. Swords came out in force to wish SergeantPat Thornton all the best on his retire-ment from An Garda Síochána. A native of

Foxford Co. Mayo, Pat joined the force almost39 years ago after spending time in London.

You could even say that there is blue blood inhis veins, as his uncle Jim Thornton servedfrom 1944 until 1988. Prior to serving the last17 years in Swords, Pat served in Donegal,Clones and Rathfarnham. On his retirement, Pat says he will “miss thecraic” and most of all “winding people up.”Indeed Pat's good humour was evident allnight in the many stories he told and in thelight-hearted stories that near and dear friendsrelayed also. The atmosphere at the Star inSwords was very friendly, as people came from

far and wide to greet Pat with gifts and greatwarmth. There were representatives from theseveral Garda stat ions across the NorthCounty, members of the legal and businesscommunity as well as locals who had becomegood friends. One of these good friends was ahusband and wife, who themselves had beenvictims of a most awful criminal assault. Theycame across the city to wish him well and tosay a very special thank you for the support hegave them through their personal trauma.Even though he is in retirement, Pat says hewill “find it hard to keep still”. He says that hemay even spend more time with, his now localGAA club, Clann Mhuire in the Naul.We wish Pat all the best in his retirement andwe are sure that he wi l l be st i l l making his presence felt in the North County again very soon.

Following the announcement that Rush GardaStation is to be closed in the near future, the policeforce would like to emphasise to the communitythat the current policing service will not beaffected.Currently, the Gardai at Lusk and Rush operate ona complementary basis. This means that if RushStation is closed, Lusk Station will provide coverfor the Rush sub-district and vice versa. Themembers attached to both stations are thoroughlyfamiliar with both sub-districts.The number of Garda personnel currently allocatedto the Rush and Lusk sub-districts will not bereduced, nor will the resources currently availablebetween the two stations. Speaking to theCounty Leader, Farrellsaid: “ I t is my v iewthat the pract ice ofrenting prefabricatedbui ldings has beenone of the biggest fail-ures of our educationsystem over the past ten years.Prefab units should have been ashort term solution, not a longone for expanding schools.” “Parents and teachers have neverbeen comfortable sending chil-dren to school in prefab units, particularly those with issues ofdamp and temperature regulation

problems. I have visited schoolsaround the North County and metteachers and parents who havebeen campaigning for a resolu-t ion to these sub standardprefabs.” He continued: “It is for

this reason that Iunderstand the impor-tance of thisannouncement tothese schools, NaulNational School, ScoilPhadraic in Donabate,Realt Na Mara inSkerries, St. Peter andPaul ’s Nat ionalSchool , and StTeresa’s inBalbr iggan, and St .Colmcille’s and Holy

Local deputy, Brendan Ryan (Lab), has urgedMinister for the Environment, Community andLocal Government, Phil Hogan to include thepost off ice as a payment option for theHousehold Charge. Ryan said: “If this is a problem for North CountyDublin, then it must be an even greater problemin rural Ireland where the distances to localauthority offices are even greater. In response to a Parliamentary Question tabledby Ryan, Minister Hogan said he was satisfiedthat there is a “comprehensive suite ofpayment options” available to persons with aliability to pay the household charge. However,Ryan has received a large number of enquiriesfrom older people and those who live in ruralNorth County Dublin who either do not haveInternet access nor is it convenient for them totravel to their local authority office, upwards of

20 miles away. Ryan went on to say: “I agreethat the payment options online are very conve-nient for those with internet access. However, alarge number of older people and those wholive in rural areas are frustrated at the lack of‘bricks and mortar’ options available for themto pay the charge. “I am disappointed the Minister did not seek toinclude the post office as a payment option asit would have been very convenient for a greatmany people. Also, I am sure it would haveresulted in a higher number of registrationsand payments at this point. I will be writing tothe Minister this week asking him to revisit hisanswer to my Parliamentary Question with aview to bringing the post office “within thecomprehensive suite of payment options”.

The County Leader spoke to Captain CaronNeale of the Girls' Brigade about her company inSwords. All of the established organisations, such as theCatholic Girl Guides, the various Scout troops and theGirls’ Brigade, have been enjoying a resurgence ofpopularity with kids and their parents.Depending on where you would like your little lotusto blossom, you may like to steer her into an all-girlsoutfit to balance time spent in a mixed-gender schoolor vice versa. Perhaps your shy princess can only becoaxed out of her comfort zone when she has anolder brother or sister in the same club. Or maybeyou’re looking for after-school activities that bolstertheir faith while they make friends and have fun, which is what the Girls' Brigade is all about.“We’re active for most of the school year and duringthat time, take the same holidays as schools do,”explains Caron. “That’s because during the breaksyou might have only half the group and, especiallywhen you’re doing team work, it’s not worth holdingmeetings to teach four when there should be eight.”The Girls Brigade’s aim is to: “help girls becomefollowers of Jesus Christ; our motto is ‘seek, serveand follow Christ’.“We meet on Wednesdayevenings from 5.30pm and it’snon-stop till 9.30pm. We start thesessions with the tiny tots underfives; then at 5 o’clock they canjoin the explorers, become ajunior at nine years old and thena senior. A brigadier is usuallyfrom 14 years, but then you canbecome an associate once you’reover 18 and that can go on aslong as you want.”Caron has been in the organisa-tion since she was three yearsold, starting in the company inDrumcondra where she remaineduntil a need was identified in Swords and she estab-lished the 45th company.“Three of us moved, myself, Karen and Meriel,” shesmiles, and as another of the associates pops intothe interview room, adds “and then we roped inSonya, Sharon, Liz, Tara and Jill.“Somebody has to be captain, but really we all do it,we started out with 60-65 girls in the company andit’s great. We’re expanding all the time and next yearwe’ll be celebrating 10 years in Swords.Typically, the companies are attached to a particularchurch – the 45th is attached to St Columba’s Churchof Ireland church across the road from the Parish Hall– but you don’t have to be a member of that specificchurch to send your daughter to any of the local Girls’Brigade companies. The officers have undergonevarious types of formal leadership training on top ofthe practises they’ve been taught as brigadiers, andlike all youth groups’ organisers now, are Gardavetted every five years. Most of the stuff fondly remembered by women theworld over is still reiterated at every meeting. The

girls work towards badges to denote skills learned, there are crafts, scripture and physical education, they go to camp and there are inter-company compe-titions where they can meet other girls from aroundIreland.“It’s about having fun and we find that if you drillthem too much for competitions it takes the fun outof it,” adds Caron. “It takes an awful lot of dedicationfrom the parents every week to bring their kids notjust here, but to underpin their achievements withtheir own time.”This company of Girls Brigade isn’t the only onewhose ranks have been swelled with ‘new Irish’ ornon-nationals who are delighted to sign their girls upfor scripture lessons along with the arts and crafts’badges. “Some of the companies are huge now,”says Caron. “I suppose one of the lesser-knownbenefits of their being in the brigade is that they havefriends across different strands of their lives. Some ofthe under-fives we have will go to ‘big school’together, or some of our girls who attend primaryschool here will have readymade friends when theymove on to secondary school.”As a proud parent herself, she knows how much ofparents’ time is precious. “My own five kids rangefrom 21 down to seven years old, we’ve four girls andone boy in the middle, so I know that they’re trying tojuggle all their kids’ clubs and do what they have to

do at home as well.“We used to split the Girls Brigadehere between a weeknight andSaturday mornings, but it meantthat it was two days gone, whichfor the parents who have boys andfootball as well, made it a bitmanic.“This is our second year runningall the groups on Wednesdaynight and it’s going brilliantly. Notevery company does things thesame way, and we even wouldn’thave exactly the same activitiesevery year – some years theremight be a weekend away for one

age group and the following year for another one –but the show at the end of the year is a huge high-light for us all.”Some of the girls may have been working on musicaltheatre, and whatever other activities the girls havedone during the year is included in the year-enddisplay. “There’s great excitement, the hall is packedwith the girls’ families, they all come and watch theyounger ones do singing games or skipping, theirparents see them skipping and there’s the flash ofthe cameras and the squeals of their parents whentheir own child performs, it’s a great show and we’reas proud of them as their parents. It’s also when weget to thank our husbands and our own families forthe support they’ve given us during the year. Wewouldn’t do it if we didn’t love it.”On this International Women’s Day, Captain Caronand her team are heading into the home stretch forthis year.“It finishes at the end of April, and we can all enjoythe whole break for the summer and start all overagain, come mid-September.”
