BISON IN TOURNAMENT PLAY

NCAAPlayoffs North Dakota State completed one of the most impressive runs in NCAA Division II women's basketball under the direction of head coach Amy Ruley in 2004. The Bison competed in 18 of 19 NCAA tournaments since 1986, and had a string of 16 in a row. North Dakota State won five national championships including four straight from 1993-1996. The Bison claimed their first title in 1991, defeating Southeast Missouri State 81-74 in Cape Giradeau, Mo. Overall, North Dakota State ap-peared in nine NCAA Four Fours, placing second three times and third on one occasion. The Bison were runner-up in their first NCAA tourney appearance in 1986 NDSU compiled a 47-13 record in all NCAA Division II tourney game and advanced to 13 NCAA regional cham-pionship games.

14 North Dakota State University Women's Basketball

For a few cherished moments late on the afternoon of March 23, 1996, life in the world of North Dakota State women's basketball was perfect. It doesn't just happen in the movies.

The film “Fargo” debuted earlier in the week. The real show, with real characters and real emotions, was at the Bison Sports Arena. There is no way Jen Rademacher could have written a better ending to her career.

Her last shot was a 3-point field goal. Swish. It gave the Bison 100 points. It was the toast of 6,534 fans.

It was part of a 104-78 cel-ebration over an outmatched Shippensburg University that gave NDSU the 1996 NCAA Division II Women's Basketball tournament title. In finishing 30-2, the Bison claimed their fourth national championship and fifth in six years. Their 104 points set an NCAA championship game record, eclipsing last year's 98 against Portland State.

“Highlights,” Rademacher said, in repeating a question. “There

Jenni Rademacher (24)

are four.”Rademacher and senior Lori

Roufs each won their fourth NCAA ring, something that can only be duplicated. Their last game, how-ever, will never be replicated.

Roufs led all scorers with 28 points and all rebounders with 10. Rademacher hit 7 of 8 field goals and finished with 15 points.

NDSU had a 57-percent accura-cy against a man-to-man defense. The Lady Raiders, then, started the second half with a zone. Birch and Lang promptly drilled NDSU's first 3-point field goal attempts of the game for a 63-35 advantage.

In short, it was a dominating performance.

For the second straight year, Morlock of NDSU was named most valuable player of the tournament. In three games, she scored 54 points and grabbed 22 rebounds. Joining Morlock on the all-tournament team were Lori Roufs and Jen Rademacher of NDSU, Jennifer Clarkson and Caro-line Omamo of Abilene Christian, and Shippensburg's Spencer.

No. 2-ranked Northern Kentucky University outscored No. 3 North Dakota State University 14-5 in overtime to post a 71-62 victory in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight Championship game March 25 played before 472 fans at the Pine Bluff Convention Center.

It was the firstever national title for the Norse (32-2), which became the first team outside the state of North Dakota to win the championship since Delta State accomplished the feat in 1992. NKU also extended its winning streak to 24 games.

North Dakota State suffered through a 0-of-11 shooting effort from the field in overtime, and made only 1-of-14 field goal attempts in the game's final 11:25.

"We just didn't seem to get anything going smoothly offensively. I felt lucky to have stayed with them in the first half, but in the second half the bottom fell out offensively," said North Dakota State head coach Amy Ruley. The Bison are 5-3 in NCAA

championship games. "We couldn't stay in a rhythm.

Foul trouble hurt us. It changed some things for us. As a student-athlete, you need to be able to adjust. We didn't adjust as well as we could have."

NCAA Elite Eight MVP Michelle Cottrell scored six of her game-high 23 points in the overtime period. Cottrell also pulled down a game-high 19 rebounds. Teammate Michele Tuchfarber, who joined Cottrell on the all-tournament team, finished with nine points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

North Dakota State was paced by the hard-working Jaime Berry, who came off the bench to score 16 points and grab 10 rebounds. Berry had only one point combined in the previous two tourney games. Jayne Even finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds to record her 19th "daily double" of the season. Amundson had 11 points.

Jayne Boeddeker and Even were selected to the all-tournament team along with NKU's Tuchfarber and Cottrell; Delta State's Caroline Boclair and Western Washington's Celeste Hill.

which helped the Bison take a 39-28 halftime lead.

Cal State-San Bernardino looked to be in a position to challenge in the second half, but the Bison picked up their intensity after the intermission.

“Our team is one that kind of feels teams out,” said NDSU head coach Amy Ruley.

“And in those cases usually the second half is our better half.”

The championship game turned out to be one of those cases. The Bison began the second half with a 20-10 run that extended the lead to 59-38 with 12:46 left. Steere, the championship's most outstanding player, tallied 13 of NDSU's 20 points during that stretch.

The Coyotes' shooting woes were never more evident than midway in the second half when they went 5:35 without a basket.

Steere, who hit 11-of-18 from the field and 10-of-13 from the foul line, was joined on the all-tourney team by teammates Rademacher and Kasey Morlock, and Kim Young and Chery'll Few from Cal State-San Bernardino. Few led the Coyotes with 25 points.

Bison Roll to Second Straight National Title at Home in '94

NDSU's Lynette Mund (42) scored two of her nine points against Cal State-San Bernardino during the 1994 NCAA Division II championship game played at the Bison Sports Arena.

Perfection is what the 1995 North Dakota State University women's basketball team will be remembered for after winning its third straight NCAA Division II championship on March 25, 1995.

With a 98-85 win over Portland State, played at the Bison Sports Arena before a title-game record 7,138 fans, NDSU became the first Division II women's champion to finish the season unbeaten. NDSU finished 32-0 and extended its winning streak to 41 games.

The Bison, ranked No. 1 the entire season, also became the first women's team to win four Division II national titles.

“That's a dream,” said Lynette Mund, one of only two seniors on the 1995 team.

“Hardly anyone does that.”Hardly any team shoots 63

percent from the field, scores 85 points and loses. But that's what happened to Greg Bruce's Port-land State squad, making its first championship game appearance.

The Bison, normally 44 percent shooters, countered Portland State's hot hand with 52 percent

shooting and their fourth highest-scoring game of the season.

Thanks to their aggressive ap-proach, six Bison players scored in double figures.

Portland State cut the Bison lead to three points in the first half and five points early in the second half. But the Vikings could get no closer.

“I always felt like we were playing well and never got out of our game plan,” said NDSU head coach Amy Ruley, who directed the Bison to their fourth NCAA title in five years.

“It was a fun one to coach.”It was also a fun game to play

in. Lori Roufs led the Bison with 23 points and 5 rebounds, while Jenni Rademacher followed with 17. Kasey Morlock and Lynette Mund each had 15 points, while Rhonda Birch and Linda Davis each finished with 11.

Morlock was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Elite Eight, while Roufs was select-ed to the all-tourney team.

Perfect Finish for NDSU In Winning Third Straight Title

North Dakota State's Lori Roufs (30) drove to the basket during the 1995 NCAA Division II national championship game at the Bison Sports Arena.

North Dakota State senior Darci Steere, playing in her fourth NCAA championship final, poured in 32 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead the Bison past Cal State-San Bernardino 89-56.

“Not very many people get the opportunity to play in a champion-ship game and even fewer people get the opportunity to play in four,” said Steere.

“There is no greater feeling in the world than going out your senior year as the national champions.”

The victory was even more special as it came in the Bison Sports Arena before 6,806 appreciative fans. When the Bison last hosted the Division II championship in 1992 they were defeated by Delta State 65-63.

As was the case throughout the championship, stifling defense was the key for the Bison. NDSU limited the Coyotes to 25 percent shoot-ing on the night, including a frigid 21 percent (7-of-33) in the decisive second half.

Trailing 18-13 midway in the first half, Jen Rademacher and Rhonda Birch sparked a 17-3 run

NDSU Gets Revenge ByDefeating Delta State in 1993

WALTHAM, Mass. -- It took a year, but North Dakota State rid itself of the bitter taste of defeat and regained the sweet taste of victory.

Nadine Schmidt scored 24 points and Jackie Parsley added 17 to power the Bison past Delta State 95-63 in the NCAA Division II champion-ship game on March 27, 1993

The margin of victory was the second largest in the tournament's 12-year history and avenged Delta State's 65-63 win the year before. NDSU has won two of the last three championships.

“We had something to prove tonight, and we went out and did it,” Schmidt said. “We had a bad taste in our mouth from last year, so we wanted to go out tonight with a big bang. I think we did.”

Indeed, NDSU (30-2) did not waste any time, opening a 40-26 halftime lead and never looking back in the second half.

Jenni Rademacher scored 14 points for the Bison, and Darci Steere scored 10 points and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.

“We were more confident this

year,” NDSU coach Amy Ruley said. “Last year was a big motivator.”

LaTanya Patty led Delta State (27-6) with 14 points. Leslie McKiernon scored 11 points and led the Lady Statesmen with 12 rebounds.

“We were very positive going into the game, but we didn't think on the floor and get it done,” McKiernon said.

Delta State led early 8-5, but never saw another lead. The closest they came was 16-15 with 11:25 left in the first half when Dawn Chism completed a three-point play.

The Bison then went on an 18-4 run and took a 34-19 lead with 4:59 to go in the first half on Lynette Mund's jump shot.

NDSU took a 40-26 lead into half-time, as Schmidt scored 11 points and Rademacher 10.

NDSU's 95 points was a champi-onship record. Schmidt was named the tournament's MVP. She also was the MVP in 1991. Jody Buck and Jackie Parsley were named to the all-tournament team.

NDSU's Jody Buck (20) pushed the ball down the court and led the Bison to a 95-63 win against Delta State in the 1993 NCAA championship game.

Much like North Dakota State did the previous year, Delta State University went on the road to garner the NCAA Division II national title.

Playing before 7,101 fans at the Bison Sports Arena, the Lady Statesmen used a dominant inside game and a zone defense to defeat North Dakota State 65-63 to win the 1992 Division II championship.

The championship was Delta State's third over the past four years.

Delta State frustrated North Dakota State with an air tight defense, holding the Bison to only 34.5 percent shooting from the floor.

“We haven't played against a zone for quite a while,” said North Dakota State All-America Nadine Schmidt. “We were struggling and waiting for someone else to pick it up.”

Center Leslie McKiernon, the tournament's most outstanding player, poured in 29 points to

lead a Delta State offensive attack which scored all but 11 of its points inside the paint.

The Lady Statesmen led 36-29 at halftime, but NDSU quickly drew to within five at 40-35 with 15:24 left in the game.

Delta State went on a 13-4 run during a six-minute span to extend the lead to 53-39 on a McKiernon layup with 9:20 left.

However, North Dakota State continually cut into the deficit and pulled to within 63-60 on a three-pointer by Susan Faus with just 15 seconds left in the game, and things seemed to be heading toward a possible overtime.

McKiernon again came up big and connected on two crucial free throws with :03 left to build the lead back to five.

The free throws proved to be more than just academic as Lynette Mund connected on a three-pointer heave at the buzzer to provide the game's final score, 65-63.

Jody Buck led the Bison with 13 points, while Schmidt scored 12 points. Schmidt and Buck were all-tournament selections.

North Dakota State's Jackie Parsley (34) blocks this Delta State shot during the first half of the 1992 NCAA Division II national championship game played at the Bison Sports Arena.

North Dakota State captured runnerup honors in the 1986 NCAA tourney in Springfield, Mass.

NDSU's Susan Faus (25) drove down the lane during the 81-74 NCAA championship victory over Southeast Missouri State in 1991 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

when they had to have it.”One of the biggest shots was hit

by Jill DeVries, who put the Bison up 72-66 with a 3-pointer with 3:42 remaining. A layup by Buck and a DeVries free throw made the score 75-66 with 2:05 left. Southeast got no closer than five points in the final five minutes.

Southeast Missouri led three times in the final half, but was un-able to match North Dakota State's ball-handling and half-court offense. SE Missouri's biggest of three leads was 49-45 on Stephanie Holland's two free throws before North Dakota State rebounded.

“I had a good feeling that we needed to play defense in a zone tonight,” said Bison head coach Amy Ruley. “It took them out of their game.”

Nadine Schmidt, the tourney's MVP, had 13 points and seven rebounds for NDSU. DeVries was se-lected to the all-tourney team. Sarita Wesley netted a game-high 26 points for SEMO.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- North Da-kota State wasn't supposed to be in Springfield. But when the champion-ship concluded those same skeptics knew they hadn't seen the last of the Bison.

Favored Cal Poly Pomona became the first women's team in the NCAA basketball championships to win back-to-back titles.

The poised and talented Broncos turned back first-time tourney entry North Dakota State, 70-63, before a crowd of 5,398 at the Springfield Civic Center.

“We beat a very good team tonight,” said Cal Poly Pomona coach Darlene May, whose team won three of five women's crowns in Springfield.

“North Dakota State's zone defense is as good as we've seen all year,” continued May. “Early on, I thought we could put them away, but they slowed down our running game and took away our momen-tum.”

With Cal Poly's Division II player of the year and usual high scorer Vickie Mitchell in foul trouble early, frontcourt teammates Debra Larsen and Debbie Flett responded with 19 points apiece. Larsen, who was named the tourney's most outstand-ing player, also delivered a game-

high 11 rebounds.Pomona tried to carve a runaway

lead, jumping out in front 17-4 in the first five minutes as Larsen was taking liberties underneath off the flashy feeds of point guard Michelle McCoy. McCoy, a transfer from UCLA, ended with 16 points and seven assists.

North Dakota State, on the outside shooting of Janice Woods and Pat Smykowski, erupted for nine straight points near the end of the half and took its first lead at 35-34 with 2:27 left before the intermis-sion.

The Bison were on top for the last time at 37-36. Larsen then made three at the line and added a rebound of her own miss to put the Broncos ahead 41-37 at halftime.

After Woods opened the second half with a hoop for North Dakota State, Cal Poly Pomona got the next 10 points and steadily began to pull away.

The Bison never came closer than seven the rest of the way.

Smykowski led North Dakota State with 20 points, while Woods added 18 points. The NDSU pair were named to the NCAA all-tournament team.

“I thought our team played hard, but we ran out of gas in the second half,” said NDSU head coach Amy Ru-ley. “Cal Poly's transition game is as quick as we've ever seen.”CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. --Sopho-

more Jody Buck's 7-of-9 field goal shooting headed a patient offense that led North Dakota State Univer-sity to an 81-74 victory over South-east Missouri State University for the NCAA Division II title on March 23, 1991.

Buck's 19 points led five North Da-kota State players in double figures.

The Bison led 38-34 at halftime, then wrestled away the lead for good at 50-49 on Susan Faus' three-point play with 12:13 remaining.

North Dakota State shot 59 percent in the final half and 54 percent overall to conclude a 31-2 season -- setting school records for most victories and best winning percentage (.939).

Southeast Missouri, playing on its homecourt and in front of 7,064 fans, finished 31-4. The host Otahkians brought a hefty 21-game winning streak into the championship contest.

“We went through a lot of chal-lenges and accepted all of them except for one,” said Southeast coach Ed Arnzen. “They are a great team. They hit the big shots time after time

Ruley, North Dakota State Among NCAA's Most Defining Moments

North Dakota State winning a fourth straight NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship in 1996 was selected as one of the “25 Defining Moments in NCAA History”.

The defining moments encompass all NCAA championship sports and all three divisions (I, II, III). The Bison four-year run included a perfect 32-0 season in 1994-95 and a 49-game winning streak, one of the longest in NCAA history.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by the NCAA, especially when you look at all the signficant events that have taken place over the past 100 years,” said NDSU head women’s basketball coach Amy Ruley, who directed the Bison to five Division II national titles and eight championship game appearances.

“It’s more of an honor for the university, the program, the student-athletes, the administrators and staff involved.”

Jen Rademacher and Lori Roufs played on four straight NCAA Division II National Championship teams during their careers at North Dakota State.

“What a great honor for the program. This is a real tribute to the coaching staff and the people in the program who have been committed to making NDSU successful,” said Roufs.

“I consider myself fortunate to have played for Coach Ruley and Kelli (Layman), as well as having had such incredible experiences and opportunities. Now, years later, I still have great memories and friendships that came out of four years of basketball at NDSU.”

ESPN Classic and ESPNU aired “25 Defining Moments in NCAA History” throughout the months of January, March and September 2006. Each moment was a 30-second vignette that highlighted the most exciting, important and memorable events in the NCAA’s history.

The NCAA celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2006.In addition, Ruley and former NCAA Division II Player of the Year Kasey Morlock were

selected to the NCAA 25th Anniversary Division II Women’s Basketball Team along with Cal Poly’s Niki Bracken, Northern Kentucky’s Michelle Cottrell, North Dakota’s Jenny Crouse and Central Missouri State’s Carla Eades.

Ruley, who was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2004, compiled a 671-198 record in 29 seasons at the university. She directed the Bison women's basketball program in their transition into the Division I ranks.

Morlock, who is NDSU’s all-time leading scorer with 2,233 points, played on three national title teams and was named the NCAA tournament Most Outstanding Player in 1995 and in 1996.

“As far as being selected to the 25th anniversary team, all I can say is that I am really honored,” said Morlock, who was a three-time All-American.

“I think the award is more about me being a part of a special time in NDSU women’s history. I was lucky enough to be on some really talented teams with amazing coaches.”

The 25th anniversary of NCAA women’s championships were celebrated throughout the 2005-06 championship season. NCAA Division II women’s basketball began in 1981 and commemorated its anniversary at the 2006 championship.
