This Guide is designed to connect consumers, farmers and local retailers to help create more sustainable, self-supporting food systems where profits stay in the local economy, consumers benefit from the freshest food possible and community connections are nurtured.

Why buy local?

The worlds population is growing exponentially. We all need to eat. We need our local farmers and they need us! Local farms and farmers make an important contribution to our local economy, our communities and our landscapes.

By 2050 approximately 9 billion people will need to be fed. At the same time high quality agricultural land is being lost at ever increasing rates due to changes in land use, soil loss from poor agricultural practices and the impacts of climate variability. Concern around long-term food security is growing, with the added challenges of rising fuel prices and long-distance food distribution, an ageing farm workforce, and food waste.

All around the globe people are turning to local food systems to ensure community resilience and well-being into the future.

Here in North East Victoria, our farmers produce a wonderful diversity of fresh produce. Lets keep it that way! By purchasing fresh food from our local farmers, you are helping to support our local agricultural production, as well as reducing food miles and carbon emissions.

Plus, we all know fresh is best! Fresh food has more nutrients, essential to our good health, than processed foods. And locally-grown food that has travelled shorter distances is likely to be more nutrient dense, since fruit and vegetables begin to lose nutrition as soon as they are harvested.

Who grew the food that you put in your mouth and how was it grown? What agricultural processes were used and in what condition did it leave the landscape where it was grown? How was it transported and how far did it travel before it reached you, the person who ate it?... It seems funny to me that the more refined and developed we have become as a nation, the more distant we eaters of food have become from the sources of our food.... Conscious understanding of our food and its journey gives us the power to change the world around us. Unknowingly, everyones food choices are shaping our world.

This Guide lists farmers and growers within Victorias North East catchment region (www.necma.vic.gov.au) and nearby surrounds, who sell their produce locally.

Each farm business listing includes a list of outlets, including farm gate address, markets and retail outlets, which are colour-coded to indicate which local council area they are located in (only outlets within the North East catchment & Albury area are included; businesses may have additional outlets that are not listed).
