What Do We Do? Steve Erickson, Executive Director

This Chamber will immediately expose you to several hundred prospects already inclined to do business with you because you are a member, assuming you provide a product/service they need, but this will become a long-term preference once you become engaged with our many events, initiatives, programs, which are clearly unique among the chamber and business association world here. You'll also have the opportunity to participate in what we believe to be the best networking engine in the NW Twin Cities. We will enhance what you do and open doors you might not know about, and we'll help you keep them open and productive. NHACC is a driver and catalyst for improvement and action. It’s not enough to simply come up with an idea. We actually get things done. We help create and business and community growth throughout Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Maple Grove and Osseo, and for members from many other communities. We take great pride in being an indispensable extension to our member sales, marketing and networking efforts, whether they are for-profit or non-profit. We serve over 1,500 principals at our membership organizations. We have done this since 1971, but unlike other organizations that might experience the same year over and over, we re-invent, evolve and lead as a matter of policy and attitude. If that were to be defined as a formula, it would be stated like this:

Experience X Knowledge X Imagination = Performance

Our background is in running successful businesses, building pipelines and filling the ones already in place, and that’s already a major advantage to any member. We don’t just do the typical grand events (ours are the best, but we do dozens of others, too). We re-invent ourselves and consciously improve on an ongoing basis and strive to be an invaluable business, management, sales/marketing resource for all of our members, from small business to schools, county and state agencies. No one else does this and tailors the experience even close to the way we do. If you have any questions, please call us at 763-424-6744 or review our website at www.nhachamber.com. Email: [email protected] or [email protected].

You can do better. We can help.

And, We Want You To Show Us Off! Please feel free to add our Chamber/member logo to your communications. Contact Bonny for a digital file (available as JPG, GIF or PDF in either color or black & white:

One in the Chamber Steve Erickson Spring 2018 State of the Cities, our fab SuperBall Gala (what, you missed that?), a whole bunch of ribbon cuttings and powerhouse new members, plus new events created to help you move the performance needle coming on all the time. That’s where we’ve been and that’s where we’re going. Our CareerPilots at member schools featuring some of the world’s most valued employers as well as our colleges and state agencies reached nearly a thousand students and we continued our advance as the only Chamber to have led workforce development initiatives in the 4-city area. The Chamber’s Annual Scholarship Awards MC’d by Dave Kiser and keynoted by North Hennepin Community College’s President Barbara McDonald again took your breath away – with meaningful and deeply appreciated awards for wonderfully talented students with winning personalities that have to be experienced. Our Manufacturers’ Consortium – 70 companies, our member colleges and incredibly enhanced thinking have generated a real possibility that we will be at the center of an entirely new flow of highly qualified workers to fill careers that have potential we would have regarded as totally unbelievable just a few years ago. Our city partners have built a marvelous and very wide reputation for rapid, intelligent and job-creating growth and we are also at the center of that. The Northwest Metro Development Showcase on May 15 will be the first time in recent history – if ever – for our cities to demonstrate the passion and the performance that is crucial to any company looking to move or expand. High Noon in June on Flag Day this year has to be your next showcase, whether you golf or not. Where else can you spend the day with so many people you like and those you’d like to know. People who know, know that it is networking supreme with a beautiful backdrop on one of the State’s best courses. Can we cook? Yes, you can.

During the past few months students from area schools took part in “Mock Interviews”. This exercise gave students practice and experience in the interview process. Without the NHACC members that gave of their time as well as sharing their expertise and experiences this would not have been possible.

CareerPilots Presenters Another initiative by the NHACC was the CareerPilots presentation where students heard from local businesses, local college representatives as well as personnel from DEED about all the opportunities right here in our community for outstanding careers that do not require a 4-year degree, but will provide a well-paying career. We look forward to presenting additional CareerPilots programs so more students have an opportunity to take advantage of a terrific opportunity to learn more about building potential careers. Again, we greatly appreciate NHACC members for their volunteer time to make this program possible.

CareerPilots Attendees Of course, our scholarship awards luncheon is always a day brightener, as during the luncheon we heard about the why these engaging and bright students were selected as our scholarship recipients. We were happy to have several of them, along with a parent/guardian, join us at Rush Creek Golf Club. The Business Education Partnership Committee meets the 4th Wednesday of each month at 8:00 AM, The Chamber office. We are always open to new Chamber members participating on the committee and hope you’ll consider attending a meeting.

2018 has been a busy year so far for our Chamber of Commerce and the Ambassador Committee was happy to be a part of it! We were present at many of our local business openings including Portillo’s, Bell Bank and Home Care Assistance. Our committee is there to provide the Chamber with members at ribbon cuttings and grand openings as well as highlight our businesses and warm introductions. We are also charged with attendance at main events such as the Gala and annual golf tournament, as well as our monthly luncheons with great key note speakers and lunch served by our local Chamber members.

Our annual Golf classic will be held June 14th at the Refuge golf course. We would love to see you there!

We meet the second Wednesday of every month to discuss upcoming Chamber events and how we can get greater attendance. We also do “pop ins” at local businesses to welcome new members and thank renewing members in an effort to initiate participation in chamber events. This could create extra visibility for their business within our community. Our goal is to make everyone feel welcomed and appreciate, and provide an avenue to get connected in the community. If you or an employee would like to come check us out please give Bonny, Steve or I a call and we would love to see you!

The Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee has been in touch with state legislators throughout the current session and it appears that a substantial amount of work is being done on behalf of businesses; and, in particular, those who want to build jobs. There’s lot to do. While there’s much to feel good about in the state, our tax requirements can be barriers to bringing more good news here. Minnesota ranks No. 3 nationally in corporate income tax at 9.8% and its top individual income tax rate is 9.85%, 4th highest in the country. We support the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce recommendations: Cut 1 percent from the state corporate tax rate, along with a 3/10% cut to the individual income tax rate.

Additionally, we have been very involved behind the scenes with our cities to build support at all levels for light rail completion through, and several major roadway construction projects for, our cities.

The GAC is now finalizing plans with the League of Women Voters for an ambitious schedule of 10 Candidate Forums throughout our area this fall. All of our city councils, Mayoralties, school boards (#279 and #286), and State Representative seats in Districts 34A, 34B, 36B and 40A are on the table this year, along with the 3rd District Congressional seat. The GAC is valiant in spirit, but few in number. No matter what your political persuasion, we need your involvement! We meet on the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 11:30 AM-1:00 PM at the Chamber. Contact the Chamber to get on board and help make a difference.

Our CNG (Chamber Networking Group) meets the first and third Thursday of every month at noon in the Chamber offices. Our meetings last an hour and feature commercials from all members as well as in-depth presentations from two select members. Over the last year we have seen considerable growth and our group now has 28 members from a wide variety of businesses covering most categories of industry in both the business to consumer and business to business fields. We host our own Business Card Exchange event each spring and have also co-hosted a BCE along with the Chamber’s Ambassador group in the past, giving you more opportunities to network.

CNG is FREE to all current chamber members and is not category exclusive so we are always looking for new members. It’s not only a great way to grow your business through networking, but also serves as a good resource to learn what methods and tools other people are using to grow their own businesses. If you’re interested in learning more or visiting one of our meetings, contact Jon Hanson at [email protected] or 612-804-3285.

IRS wraps up ‘Dirty Dozen’ list of tax scams for 2018; Encourages taxpayers to remain vigilant

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service concluded its annual "Dirty Dozen" list of tax scams with a warning to taxpayers to remain vigilant about these aggressive and evolving schemes throughout the year.

More Details Here: https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-wraps-up-dirty-dozen-list-of-tax-scams-for-2018-encourages-taxpayers-to-remain-vigilant

This year's “Dirty Dozen” list highlights a wide variety of schemes that taxpayers may encounter throughout the year, many of which peak during tax-filing season. The schemes can run the gamut from simple refund inflation scams to technical tax shelter deals. A common theme throughout these: Scams put taxpayers at risk.

Taxpayers need to guard against ploys to steal their personal information. And they should be wary of shady promoters trying to scam them out of money or talk them into engaging in questionable tax schemes.

Taxpayers should always keep in mind that they are legally responsible for what is on their tax return even if it is prepared by someone else. See the Choosing a Tax Professional page.

Here is a recap of this year's "Dirty Dozen" scams:

Phishing: Taxpayers should be alert to potential fake emails or websites looking to steal personal information. The IRS will never initiate contact with taxpayers via email about a bill or tax refund. Don’t click on one claiming to be from the IRS. Be wary of emails and websites that may be nothing more than scams to steal personal information. (IR-2018-39)

Phone Scams: Phone calls from criminals impersonating IRS agents remain an ongoing threat to taxpayers. The IRS has seen a surge of these phone scams in recent years as con artists threaten taxpayers with police arrest, deportation and license revocation, among other things. (IR-2018-40)

Identity Theft: Taxpayers should be alert to tactics aimed at stealing their identities, not just during the tax filing season, but all year long. The IRS, working in the Security Summit partnership with the states and the tax industry, has made major improvements in detecting tax return related identity theft during the last two years. But the agency reminds taxpayers that they can help in preventing this crime. The IRS continues to aggressively pursue criminals that file fraudulent tax returns using someone else’s Social Security number. (IR-2018-42)

Return Preparer Fraud: Be on the lookout for unscrupulous return preparers. The vast majority of tax professionals provide honest, high-quality service. There are some dishonest preparers who operate each filing season to scam clients, perpetuating refund fraud, identity theft and other scams that hurt taxpayers. (IR-2018-45)

Fake Charities: Groups masquerading as charitable organizations solicit donations from unsuspecting contributors. Be wary of charities with names similar to familiar or nationally-known organizations. Contributors should take a few extra minutes to ensure their hard-earned money goes to legitimate charities. IRS.gov has the tools taxpayers need to check out the status of charitable organizations. (IR-2018-47)

Inflated Refund Claims: Taxpayers should take note of anyone promising inflated tax refunds. Those preparers who ask clients to sign a blank return, promise a big refund before looking at taxpayer records or charge fees based on a percentage of the refund are probably up to no good. To find victims, fraudsters may use flyers, phony storefronts or word of mouth via community groups where trust is high. (IR-2018-48)

Excessive Claims for Business Credits: Avoid improperly claiming the fuel tax credit, a tax benefit generally not available to most taxpayers. The credit is usually limited to off-highway business use, including use in farming. Taxpayers should also avoid misuse of the research credit. Improper claims often involve failures to participate in or substantiate qualified research activities or satisfy the requirements related to qualified research expenses. (IR-2018-49)

Falsely Padding Deductions on Returns: Taxpayers should avoid the temptation to falsely inflate deductions or expenses on their tax returns to pay less than what they owe or potentially receive larger refunds. Think twice before overstating deductions, such as charitable contributions and business expenses, or improperly claiming

credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit. (IR-2018-54)

Falsifying Income to Claim Credits: Con artists may convince unsuspecting taxpayers to invent income to erroneously qualify for tax credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit. Taxpayers should file the most accurate tax return possible because they are legally responsible for what is on their return. This scam can lead to taxpayers facing large bills to pay back taxes, interest and penalties. (IR-2018-55)

Frivolous Tax Arguments: Frivolous tax arguments may be used to avoid paying tax. Promoters of frivolous schemes encourage taxpayers to make unreasonable and outlandish claims about the legality of paying taxes despite being repeatedly thrown out in court. The penalty for filing a frivolous tax return is $5,000. (IR-2018-58)

Abusive Tax Shelters: Abusive tax structures are sometimes used to avoid paying taxes. The IRS is committed to stopping complex tax avoidance schemes and the people who create and sell them. The vast majority of taxpayers pay their fair share, and everyone should be on the lookout for people peddling tax shelters that sound too good to be true. When in doubt, taxpayers should seek an independent opinion regarding complex products they are offered. (IR-2018-62)

Offshore Tax Avoidance: Successful enforcement actions against offshore cheating show it’s a bad bet to hide money and income offshore. People involved in offshore tax avoidance are best served by coming in voluntarily and getting caught up on their tax-filing responsibilities. (IR-2018-64)

Maple Grove Transit’s Dial-a-Ride has a new name and logo

In 1997 Maple Grove Transit began a “demand-response” service called Dial-a-Ride. This program is an advance reservation, shared-ride, curb-to-curb service available to the general public for rides within the city.  With new replacement buses and a new scheduling and dispatching software system arriving this spring, it was an opportune time to update the name and logo for the service that will now be known as MY RIDE. This refreshed branding will cultivate consistency, continuity, and engagement with new and existing riders. In addition, Maple Grove Transit is exploring similar changes for the large bus fleet that provides the commuter express service to and from Minneapolis.

The new MY RIDE scheduling and dispatching software offers riders online reservations and booking trips via a smart phone app. The app also provides trip reminders and mapping features. One goal with the new software is to create efficiencies in the system that will provide additional ride capacity. Some of that new service capacity would be available on demand without advance ride reservations similar to Uber and Lyft. Details for on-demand rides will be forthcoming later this summer. The MY RIDE service will also be promoted for employment related rides to help attract and retain employees for local businesses. MY RIDE service hours are Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Six fully-accessible mini-buses provide the service, and the fare is $1.75 per ride. To schedule a ride, call 763-493-2200. For complete details, visit maplegrovetransit.org

Chamber Member Diane Sannes receives “Random Acts of Kindness Award”

Brooklyn Center: Mayor Willson honors Diane Sannes Since 1997, the City of Brooklyn Center has celebrated Random Acts of Kindness. Each year residents are nominated and the City Council recognizes those that perform Random Acts of Kindness in the community. This year Chamber member Diane Sannes was nominated by resident Dell Eriksson, "for Diane volunteering everywhere, for many causes." Here's a short list of some of areas Sannes can be seen in the Brooklyn Center community. *If you are new to Brooklyn Center Diane offers you a ride in her car for a one hour driving tour to see some of the highlights of the town. *If you are in need of free food, clothing or meals Diane creates a monthly calendar called the Brooklyn Bounty where folks can find these services in the area-look for it at the CEAP.org website. *A local Brooklyn Center bagel bakery bags up its leftovers each evening and Diane delivers the baked goods to Brooklyn Center schools for the staff, various food shelfs, churches, fire and police departments. Over the last 2 years that has amounted to over 90,000 bagels! *History is another of her passions and supporting the Brooklyn Historical Society and telling stories of Earle Brown's early life at his Brooklyn Farm or in Maple Grove you can find her in the summer months interpreting at the Pierre Bottineau house in the Three Rivers Park District Elm Creek Park. *Working with community youth is a priority for her as she helps local schools receive grants from local businesses for their school programs. *She is a Merit Badge counselor for the Boy Scouts of America and her favorite Merit Badge to work with the Scouts on, is Citizenship in the Community. CONGRATULATIONS, Diane!
