Congratulations to Meghan Malone, Eden Whittaker and Jeremy Rees for

performing in the first round of the Lions Youth of the Year competition last

weekend. The students secured the trophy with Meghan placing first in the

speaking section and first overall! Meghan will now go ahead and compete in the

Regional Final.

The 2017 Junior Secondary Meet and Greet was again a great success. Parents

had the opportunity to meet and interact with teachers, Year Coordinators and

Heads of Department. Presentations were also delivered by Rachel from STYMIE,

Sue McMurtrie (Numeracy Coach) and John Doolan (Technology HOD). Thank

you to all parents who attended the evening.

Last week I attended the biennial Principal’s Conference. The key message links into DET’s strategic plan –

Every student, every school: lighting the path for innovation, equity and impact. Throughout the conference

we were inspired by the who’s who of the education world including Professor John Hattie, Professor

Douglas Fischer, Dr Adam Fraser, Kate Jones MP, our Director General Dr Jim Watterston and Deputy

Director Patrea Walton. We also heard from some great leaders in their own fields of expertise including

netball player Liz Ellis, Victoria Cross winner Mark Donaldson, and journalist Kerry O’Brien. The words and

messages from these talented people certainly provoked much discussion and vision for our own school

communities.

Congratulations to the Mackay North SHS F1 in Schools

team. After attending the National Finals in Adelaide last

week, they returned with the Best Manufacturing Award in

their class and third place overall in the Development class.

This a huge commitment that students, parents and our

staff undertake to allow our students to compete in these

events. Well done and great effort to all those involved!

Our annual International Women’s Day breakfast was held on Wednesday in the Junior Secondary Precinct.

Eden Whittaker and Dana Costigan delivered powerful speeches on the history of International Women’s Day

and the issues that women still face across the world today. Thank to our senior male students and staff who

helped prepare breakfast for our Year 7 and Year 12 students, and to the Mackay North SHS ZONTA Club

for hosting the breakfast.

The North High Z Club went to the International Women’s Day Breakfast at Magpies on Sunday. Meghan Malone and Tamara Dobbie were both nominated and short-listed for the ‘Young Women in Public Affairs’ award. Well done!

Sadly, we say goodbye this week to one of our Special Education teachers, Emma Taylor. The students

surprised Ms Talyor with a farewell morning tea on Thursday and delivered words of thanks to this wonderful

teacher. Thank you and all the best, Emma!

Mackay North State High School’s Z Club members, Dana Costigan, Jazlyn Bauer, Eden Whittaker,

Tamara Dobbie, Meghan Malone and Jana Bassan had the privilege of joining more than two hundred people in Mackay

to celebrate Zonta’s International Women's Day Brunch on Sunday 5th March at Magpies Sports Club.

The annual event celebrates women in our local region who are involved in the organisation and facilitation of projects

that assist women in our local community and at an international level.

Tamara Dobbie and Meghan Malone were publically commended for their contribution to empowering women worldwide

through their dedicated service and advocacy. Both ladies were short listed applicants for the 2017 Young Women in

Public Affairs Award. Mackay North State High School and the Mackay community were able to celebrate the

commendable efforts of both Meghan and Tamara as they were given an opportunity to showcase their fantastic

achievements at the brunch. Congratulations Tamara and Meghan for your outstanding and inspirational effort.

We would also like to thank our fellow Mackay North State High School Z Club members and community for your

continued support.

Australian F1 in Schools National Finals Australian F1 in Schools National FinalsRecently, after a few very stressful days of competition, Cooper Grant, Jack Donohue, Stephane Schott and Aaron Gray, our F1 team, attended the Awards Dinner for the Australian F1 in Schools National Finals. I was very proud of the team when it was announced that they got the Best Manufacturing Award for their class. This was due to Aaron’s unique design for machining the rear wings of the car as no other team in the competition had used the method.

Just a few minutes later the boys were awarded 3rd place overall Champions for Development Class. It is the best result North High has ever achieved in F1 in Schools and the team is now more driven to compete again in the new season.

Then the boys had to dismantle the Pit Display Booth that they had made and pack it ready to fly back home to Mackay. Thank you again to the staff and parents that helped the boys get to Adelaide and I will see you all on Monday.

Thanks also to the Dept. Innovation & Science, Dalrymple Bay, D & T Hydraulics and Kurtz Mining for their assistance.

Mr Rowan Cahill Industrial Technology & Design Teacher F1 in Schools Regional Coordinator

Year 7 and Year 12 girls enjoyed a delicious breakfast cooked by Mrs Wallace and her student helpers, and served by the Senior boys. School captain, Eden Whittaker and Zonta Club representative, Dana Costigan gave inspirational speeches about the significance of International Women’s Day.

CATCH A MATHS MOMENT Mrs McMurtrie (Numeracy Coach) is running the ‘Catch a Maths Moment’ competition, where students are asked to find

a moment, capture an image and make a poster showcasing the mathematics involved.

Prizes include tuckshop vouchers for the best posters and participation award (pizza party) for anyone who has entered

their poster in the competition.

Students can upload a digital image of their poster to www.elearn.eq.edu.au in the course ‘Catch a Maths Moment’.

Alternatively, if a hard copy poster is preferred, it can be handed to a Maths teacher or Mrs McMurtrie in 2503.

Can you spot the Maths in these moments?

TAKE ON THE CHALLENGE!

Just a reminder that USB do die eventually, and once dead, it is very difficult to retrieve assignments and information

etc. from them. Sometimes it is impossible. So, before students save any valuable work to a thumb drive, they should

save their work to a laptop, PC or an external hard drive. In this way students can have a backup for any lost work due

to thumb drive failure. It would also be advantageous for students to save their work to a third location such as a cloud

location like OneDrive. If that is not possible then students should save their work to another USB or external hard

drive.

IMPORTANT MARCHING BAND REHEARSALS

Just a reminder that there are FOUR very important

marching band rehearsals coming up. ALL members of

the marching band are required on Monday afternoon,

March 24 and Friday afternoon, March 27 until

4.00pm. The Brisbane marching band members are

needed for an extra TWO rehearsals that both finish at

4.30pm on Tuesday afternoon, April 18 and Friday

afternoon, April 21.

MARCHING BAND TRIP TO THE STATE ANZAC

PARADE

It is very pleasing to see that all places in the marching band

trip to the State Anzac Parade have now been filled. We will

be taking eighty-eight students to the parade which is our

twenty-third performance in the prestigious State Anzac

Parade. For all students involved, it will be a truly

memorable experience. Congratulations to all students who

have been successful in receiving and accepting offers to

attend the parade as members of our marching band.

Please remember that if students need to order a marching

band polo shirt from Uniform Solutions (corner of Alfred and

Sydney Streets) for the trip, the deadline is March 11.

YEAR 7 MARCHING BAND REHEARSALS

Congratulations to our Year 7 marching band students who

have made an excellent start to their training for the band.

They have been very reliable in attending the Friday

afternoon rehearsals and their “about face in march time”

manoeuvre last Friday was the best we have ever seen in

initial training. Keep up the great work!

VOCAL ENSEMBLE – KMEIA CHORAL FESTIVAL

The first performance for the vocal ensemble this year is at

the KMEIA Choral Festival at the Mackay Entertainment

Centre on Monday evening, March 20. All vocal ensemble

students will need full cultural uniform for this event. The

school has some second hand uniforms available, but if you

prefer a new one, it is available at Uniform Solutions on the

corner of Sydney and Alfred Streets.

If you have not paid the annual vocal group levy of $20.00,

can you please attend to this by the end of this month.

ANNUAL INSTRUMENTAL LEVY

If you have not yet paid the $60.00 annual instrumental levy

for the instrumental program, it would be greatly appreciated

if you could finalise this payment by March 24 please.

INTERHOUSE SWIMMING CARNIVAL 2017

Following on from the success of our Junior Swimming Carnival, the Senior students recently took to the pool for the second half of the Interhouse Swimming Carnival.

All students who attended swam until they couldn’t swim any more, giving 100% for themselves and their house for a chance at victory. Out of the pool, students enjoyed themselves, even breaking into a war cry or two, plus dancing to the Macarena and giving their own rendition of a well-known Australian song…

After all the swimming/dancing/singing had concluded, Fitzgerald were victorious by a very small margin (5 points) in the Senior Championship, from Norris, Spiller and Bagley. This was the second victory for Fitzgerald in the 3 years of the Senior Championship.

Combining the results from the two parts of the carnival, Spiller were the champions for the second year in a row, with a margin of 3 points over Norris, followed by Fitzgerald and Spiller. The next time the students compete for Interhouse supremacy will be for the Cross Country.

The Interhouse Cross Country will be held on Wednesday 19th April (second day back of Term 2) during Period 4. All students are expected to attend this as it is a normal school day. Students will need to bring a hat, water bottle and any medication (eg. asthma puffer) with them on the course, sunscreen will be provided. Should students want to run in their house colours (shirt only), they may change in to these at the beginning of 2nd break. If your child is unable to participate due to medical reasons, a note (written and signed by parents/caregiver) must be returned to Mr Smith before 3pm Tuesday 18th April. Special arrangements will be made for these students.

If your child would like to train, there are some sessions being conducted at the school by Miss Beathe, Mr Crawford & Mr O’Neil. Also, any student who is turning 12yrs of age this year and wanting to trial for Northern Suburbs must do these sessions as they are being used as a trial. Should your child want to participate, they will need to collect the form and return it to Mr Smith before attending any sessions. These sessions are conducted on a Tuesday and Friday morning. Thank you to all the students and staff who have participated in these sessions.

Busy time of year We often do not get a chance to tell our students how proud we are of them, especially when assessment is due and exams are looming, so I took these pictures of my 10 A English students while they were not looking with the sole intention of doing just this … congratulating them on their work ethic and comradery in a very public way. I just wish I could have fitted all students in the frame but I was trying to be sneaky. Maybe next time!

What is STYMIE? "Let us not look back in anger, nor forward in fear, but around in awareness."

~ JAMES THURBER

Stymie allows bystanders to send anonymous notifications to the administration of Mackay North State High

School, about someone who they believe is being bullied or harmed.

The notification interface allows bystanders to upload evidence like screen shots of FB discussions, Snapchats,

text messages or instant message conversations and an outline of the incident(s). Click here to view the notifica-

tion page.

North High receives the Stymie Notifications in the form of an email alert. The notifications are encrypted, anony-

mous and confidential. Stymie does not store any information; we are merely the road upon which it travels.

Stymie complements Mackay North SHS’s existing student well-being framework.

Stymie promotes the pro-social responsibilities of bystanders and outlines their responsibilities in the cycle of

bullying. We are empowering your students to stand up for each other without fear.

Stymie Notifications provide supporting documentation to assist the person being bullied, the parents and the

teachers, to stymie the bullying cycle.

Stymie fosters pro-social values, physical and emotional safety and enhances interpersonal skills and self

awareness.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; in-deed it is the only thing that ever has.”
