PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Hi folks, We had another very nice lunch tour to the Watering Hole Restaurant at Hartman's Deep Valley Golf Course on July 15. The weather was perfect, the food was good and a stop at Bruster's Ice Cream near Zelienople topped off our day. Thanks to Clara and Joe Dresbach for hosting this event. Speaking of events, it's time to start thinking about the club picnic. The picnic is scheduled for September 13th at 1 P.M. A catered meal will be served at 3 P.M. with our regular monthly meeting to follow. The location will once again be at the residence of Chuck Glenz on Leslie Road in Valencia. Jan Smith will be our DJ. Jack Swaney has volunteered to handle the tables and chairs, the soft drinks, table settings and the caterer. I will handle the rest of the details. Here's what you need to do. If your last name begins with the letter A through J please bring a dessert. If your last name begins with the letter K through Z please bring a side dish. Most importantly please notify the Stauffers by September 1st as to the number of people who will be attending. By phone 412-486-7977 or email [email protected] if you plan to attend. You can't just show up as we need to know how much food to order from the caterer. A sign-up sheet will also be available at the August meeting. HERB SCOTT

This month we feature a fairly new member in our club, Herb Scott. Club member Joe Dresbach has been going to club lunches and other events with Herb and invited him to join us, which he did a year ago on July 13. Herb is certainly a welcome member as he has been associated with automobiles all of his life in the business of auto repair, auto racing and the old car hobby. He brings a wealth of knowledge with his experience in the auto interest. Herb grew up loving old cars, worked on them, restored them and raced them. He really never had time for the old car hobby while he was active in racing. His first interest in old cars was “souping” them up. His real interest in the antique car hobby came about 20 years ago when his friend Bud Baer in Washington, Pa. was thinning out his big collection of cars. Herb’s favorite car in Bud’s collection was a 1940 Ford Convertible. As you might expect, the 1940 Ford was one car Bud wanted to keep. Herb kept pestering Bud for a long time until he finally sold him the car. Herb said he has always liked the forty vintage Ford and this car was somewhat restored when he got it. Through the years however, Herb has updated the brake system, changed the engine to a 59 AB and had a Columbia rear end in it for a while. (this rear end is currently getting rebuilt) Herb still has the original engine which is fully operable. Herb and the guys in their garage business did all of the work with exception of some paint work done at an outside source. Fords have always sparked Herb’s interest and he adds they are the easiest cars to find parts. Herb started his auto repair business in 1960, so has seen nearly 50 years of changes in auto-mobile technology. Today a mechanic has to not only carry a wench and a large complement of tools including metric, but has to have computer access to solve problems and find parts. It might appear as though the engineers who build the mechanical systems, especially the electrical and computerized portion, have never had to repair them.

Herb’s son Deek has been running the business since 1983 when Herb had triple bypass surgery. Being in the auto repair business, Herb has had customers offer old cars that they wanted to get rid of. Unfortunately none of these were gems and were purchased for resale. In addition to his Ford he had a 1957 Oldsmobile hardtop and a 48 Chevy convertible and others. Herb has a 31 year career in racing from 1948 through 1979. Highlights include: 1951— Pittsburgh Roadster Association Champion 1956—1960, 1962—1965, 1967 Ten-time Pittsburgh Racing Association Champion 1958 -Tri-State Championship Winner, Heidelberg, Pa. 1970—First winner of the Johnny Appleseed Classic in Mansfield, Ohio 1974—Inducted into the Western Pennsylvania Hall of Fame 1979—Inducted into the Race of Champions Hall of Fame, Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania 1984—Inducted into the Pittsburgh Circle Track Hall of Fame 2007—Inducted into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame And last but not least, an impressive winner of 520 Feature Events during his career.

Remember When by Don Gamble

Herb started racing in 1948 and he won his first feature that year at the New Kensington race

track. His 500th feature victory came at Don Martin’s Lernerville Speedway on May 30, 1975 and he won the

last feature, number 520 at Latrobe Speedway in 1979.

Other honors which he has accumulated during his many years of facing included: the Pittsburgh Road-

ster Association title in 1951, twelve consecutive feature wins at Clarksburg, West Virginia in 1952, twenty

one feature wins at Heidelberg in 1956 with a total of 45 feature wins for the year. Herb won the Pittsburgh

Racing Association title from 1956 through 1960, 1962, 1965, and again in 1967.

His driving accomplishments came in several types of race cars including roadsters, modifieds, sprints,

and late models. Herb ran at Langhorne and won the 1958 Tri-State Championship at Heidelberg. He also

won the first Johnny Apple Seed Classic in 1970 at Mansfield, Ohio.

Other honors which he has received include: The Dapper Dan Club of Pittsburgh sports award 1957,

1960, and 1963. In 1974 Herb was inducted into the Western Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. In 1977, the

Hall of Fame at Pocono was established by the staff of the Race of Champions and Herb became a member.

During his many years of racing, Herb drove for several car owners. The list sounds like the “Who’s

Who” of car owners. Some of the owners were: Bill “Pappy” Kessler, Doc Frawley, Hoot Martin, Art Munch,

Tom Kennedy, Ziggy, and George Leon. Herb won his first trophy driving for Pappy Kessler. It is ironic that

some twenty years later Herb’s son Deek won his first trophy also driving for Pappy. When Herb drove for

Doc Frawley he was teamed up with Bill Webster. Bill built and maintained the cars that he and Herb drove.

One of the most interesting owner-driver teams that Herb drove for was in 1971. Herb and teammate

Bob Wearing drove the 8-ball cars of George Leon. On race nights each car would be racing at a different

track. The idea was if they raced together they would have one first and one second. If they split, they could

possibly, and usually did, win two events. In 1971 the Leon-Scott-Wearing team won an unheard of seventy

features between them that year.

During the early years, Dick Linder was the driver Herb liked to watch in action. Later, Herb’s favorite

driver was his son Deek. Deek cut his teeth in the claimers and semi late divisions and later moved into the

modified and late model ranks.

Remember When by Don Gamble continued

People often wonder why Herb retired while he was still at the top of his game. According to Herb he

was getting light headed from time to time. He was racing at Schmucker’s Speedway in Latrobe in 1979. Scott

was leading the feature and there was a caution at the half way point for an accident. The race was stopped

with all the cars lined up on the front straightaway. The drivers got out of their cars and Herb was leaning

against the number 7. He began to get light headed again. Herb said “I looked up and made a deal with the

Lord. I said if you let me finish this race I will quit. I won the race and sold the car the next day”. That was the

final race of a very successful career that includes a record 520 feature wins. The name Herb Scott is synony-

mous with winner.

Herb and his wife Pat have been married 55 years and they live in Wexford, Pa. In addition to their son

Deek, they have two lovely granddaughters. He enjoys retirement while driving around in his street rod and

going to car cruises with his son Deek.
