PORT HARDY—Drafting students at Port Hardy Secondary School got their feet wet in the world of computer-aided design over the last few weeks as the students were tasked with creating a cardboard boat for their final class project.

Then they got the rest of themselves wet when they took their creations to the nearby Quatse River to test them out.

The students used the program Rhino to design their vessels before using cardboard and duct tape to bring the designs to life.

Luckily for most, the students’ grade on the project wasn’t dependent on the seaworthiness of their craft as the first intrepid captains, in traditional mariner fashion, quickly went down with their

creations.A few, however,

were surprisingly successful, the

makeshift dinghies ferrying their cargo the length of the 100-yard stretch of water despite

the design restrictions forbidding waxed cardboard, layering the hull or excessive

taping.Teacher Kevin

McGhee explained that the outing was just a fun way to round out the year’s lessons, though he betrayed his views on the students’ chances by making lifejackets mandatory before launch.

Once everyone had a chance to navigate the stretch, the successful few converged on the centre of the strait in a bid to oust the others from their craft and guarantee that no one boarded the bus back without getting wet.

Due to several considerations, the drafting class will not be offered in the upcoming school year, although it is hoped that the course can be offered on alternate years to allow all students the opportunity to participate.

Outgoing Principal Steven Gray said he considered drafting “an important class,” and one that he would like to see return.

If the would-be captains and their experience were any measure, the school will have no need to pressgang recruits when the popular course returns.

Coho salmon are plentiful and the anglers getting out are reaching their limits at most shing areas. Springs are being caught and some bigger sh are coming in. The Hump, Shelter Point and Bates Beach are prime areas. A couple of Salmon Derbies just nished and both the guides and anglers caught sh and the ladies at Painters Lodge were very happy. The largest sh came in at 22.5 pounds. Discovery Pier is still looking for the rst salmon caught this year but on the weekends the locals and tourists come out to sh and socialize. Fishing rods can be rented and rst timers can enjoy a day out at the pier. Fly shing on the Elk River has been good at certain times and this catch and release river can be busy on the weekends. Anglers who get out know the pools and can have a great of dry y shing.

BUILDING OR REPAIRING?

Like it or not, we live in a toxic environment. The daunting task of cleansing your body of the toxins you knowingly or unwittingly ingest falls upon your liver – one of the hardest-working organs in your body.

When I talk to people about boosting their glutathione levels, I’m essentially talking about improving the body’s ability to cleanse itself. The most essential element the liver uses in the detoxification process, in fact, is glutathione – by far the most important antioxidant produced by the body for neutralizing free radicals. When your body is exposed to large amounts of toxins for prolonged periods, however, glutathione levels become depleted, which can result in liver damage and oxidative stress.

Imagine your body is a clean sponge and the nutrients and vitamins your body needs are a bowl of pure, clean water. If you first submerge the

sponge in a bowl of muddy water (toxins) before placing it into

the clean water, you won’t absorb many of the nutrients. However, if you thoroughly wring out the muddy water and clean it completely (detoxification

through the liver) and then submerge it in the clean water, you’ll absorb many more of the nutrients your body needs. This, in a nutshell, is the effect glutathione has on your liver. With ample glutathione levels, your liver has the means to extract toxins from your cells, which are

then more readily available to absorb the nutrients that promote better health.

A healthy diet, coupled with exercise and supplementation, may be the best thing you can do to help

your liver function in the most efficient way possible. Max International products such as MaxGXL, MaxOne and Cellgevity are uniquely designed to support optimal production

of glutathione, which will help the liver and other vital organs to perform at their peak.

Darlene Goodrick is an independent associate with MAX International. Reach

her at 250-218-4426 or through her website at www.shopmaxproducts.com.

Water is the most abundant, yet possibly the most overlooked, substance in the human body accounting for 45 to 60 per cent of an adult’s total body weight.

Water is essential for many bodily processes. It is used to provide lubrication for joints, transport nutrients to the cells, get rid of unwanted waste, and most importantly keep us cool when the temperature rises.

Of course, running all of these systems takes a constant supply of water that needs to be replaced on a daily basis. For an average adult, water loss during

a typical day can be up to 2.5 litres.

In order to maintain the fluid balance within the body, water gain needs to equal water loss. In other words, any water lost by sweating, or urinating, needs to be replaced by eating food, or drinking liquids. During exercise, water loss increases rapidly. Sweat production is increased to keep the body temperature down, and the breathing rate increases to supply oxygen to the muscles. This results in greater water loss from the lungs. During heavy workouts, water can

be lost at a rate of up to four litres per hour. Loss of too much water from the body results in dehydration. Dehydration reduces the volume of blood in the body, and makes the heart work harder to pump the blood around the body and deliver oxygen to the muscles. Exercise is hard enough when you are properly hydrated, never mind when the body’s systems aren’t working as efficiently because of lack of water.

A five per cent reduction in body weight due to dehydration can result in a 30 per cent drop

in exercise performance. Nausea and vomiting may be experienced as dehydration progresses and fluid loss greater than five per cent creates weakness,

confusion, and dizziness, and can lead ultimately to coma and death. The moral of the story: remember to drink while exercising.

It is easy to tell when you need to water your plants.

They droop. It is not so easy to know when to water yourself. The simple answer is to drink as much as your body tells you to. This issue is a controversial one and there is a great deal of conflicting information on it. However, if you obey your thirst and drink only when thirsty, then you will be safe and it should not affect your performance at all.

It is better not to force yourself to drink too often. In most situations you can listen to your body and you should be fine. If you have trouble hearing what your body is telling you, drink somewhere 400

to 1,000 millilitres per hour while you are exercising. Are sports drinks necessary for re-hydration?

Sports drinks can be helpful to athletes who are exercising at a high intensity for 60 minutes or more, but it’s really not necessary to replace losses of sodium, potassium and other electrolytes during exercise since you’re unlikely to deplete your body’s stores of these minerals during normal training. For most of us, water works perfectly well for restoring water balance to the body, and it is certainly a lot easier on the wallet.

No reason to see a physiotherapist this time, but I hope you enjoyed the article. Have fun. Drink lots (of water).

Ben Chatterson is a physiotherapist at Rehabilitation in Motion which has four Island locations including two in Campbell River – Willow Point (250) 923-3773 and Quinsam (across from Save On Foods), (250) 286-9670 – as well as Comox Valley (250) 334-9670 and Port Alberni (250) 723-9675. David Cox will take a months-long two-wheeled journey cycling the Island tip to tip to tip in a bid to end Multiple Sclerosis.

The 68-year-old will ride to Port Hardy and back for the endMS cause and embarked from his Triangle Mountain home on his third unsupported Van Isle End to End to endMS early this morning.

“I get to start off going down a hill,” the Colwood man said indicating his steep driveway. “Really, the idea was to start at home and end at home.”

At first the then-Torontonian was just “looking for a good organized bike ride”. The next year it got personal, his niece was diagnosed with MS. Within six months she was confined to a wheelchair.

Cox organized a dynamic team of RBC fundraising riders and now is in his 19th year of MS bike rides.

“I’m going to raise money – that’s gravy,” he said. “It keeps the whole concept that this disease does not have a cure and make people aware of it.”

When he retired to B.C. in 2005, Cox continued to ride fundraisers and raise awareness, spending three years on the board for the MS Society’s South and Central Island chapter. In 2009, he started the Island-wide ride that became bi-annual after an injury in 2010. The idea is to put his own “blood, sweat and tears” into the effort.

“There’s a lot of competing charities out there looking for dollars,” he explained.

So Cox packed his 40 pounds of baggage

on his 28-pound bike and headed out of Colwood Friday to make his way to Port

Hardy and back to Shawnigan in time for the Cowichan Valley Grape Escape MS ride.
