NORTH
NEWS
August 8th, 2016
Dear Olathe North Families,
My name is Jason Herman principal Olathe North High
School. This year I will be sending out bi-weekly
newsletters to keep you up to date with what is going on
here at Olathe North. I welcome information from our
community to add to the newsletter. Please send any
announcements to me at [email protected].
I am so excited to step in to the position of principal for
the 2016-17 school year. For those of you that do not
know me let me share a little bit about myself. This will be
my 18th year in education. My first nine years were here at
ON as a social studies teacher, baseball, and football
coach. I spent one year as an asst. principal at pioneer
trail junior high before returning to North for the last 7
years as asst. principal and athletic director. As you will
learn I am passionate about Olathe North and have a deep
understanding and caring for our community and the rich
traditions that have been built here over the years.
The Olathe North staff will work hard to uphold the
mission of our school, “While celebrating diversity, our
mission is to develop adaptive, responsible citizens through
relationships, rigor, relevance and resilience.” We live by
simple words, “You’re in high school once, but you’re an
Eagle Forever!” Let’s have a great year.

The students at Olathe North have been using their time off this summer
to do some wonderful things. This issue is full of the great things North
students and staff achieved this summer. In addition, we will lead off
with some very important dates and opportunities for ONHS parents to
get involved and support our Eagle family.

Second Chance Breakfast Coming to Olathe North!
Starting later this semester, students who miss breakfast before school can get a “Grab and Go” breakfast (easy
to eat quickly with little mess), after the 1st class of the day. This is the same program that was started last
year at several of the Olathe middle schools. A collaborative project of Olathe North DECA (business
organization) and AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) students, identified that most students
were missing out on breakfast, and needed a “second chance” after school started. A number of these students
worked with the Olathe Schools’ Food Services and determined that there was substantial business and
educational value in implementing this program at North.
National studies indicate that Second Chance Breakfast
leads to improvements in student health, attendance, and
performance in class.
School nutrition staff will be serving breakfast after the first
class of the day, in the cafeteria and from mobile serving
carts in the hallways. Students can grab a bagged meal to
be eaten between classes or during the next class period.
Breakfast will be purchased by scanning their school ID as
they do during lunch. Students that are full pay at lunch will
be charged $1.55, reduced lunch will be charged $.30, and
students that qualify for free lunch also qualify for free
breakfast.
More details will be sent out after school begins.

Breakfast project, last semester.

Student Summer Activities
Olathe North Student’s participate in 3rd Annual
“Showdown” Baseball Game
In July the Olathe Northwest Football
team led the 3rd annual “Showdown”
Baseball game at the Miracle League
Field of
Olathe. This
was an “All-
star style”
baseball game
that featured
the players who may have challenges in their
daily lives, but who also have hearts of GOLD.
Teens from the 4
Olathe high
schools come
together to
make this the
event of the
summer and
gave their All-
Stars the experience of a lifetime! Olathe
North had several teens participate in the
Showdown baseball game. Each player
was accompanied by a peer buddy. Buddies
were from the Olathe North Football
team! Even the Eagles Cheerleaders were
there to cheer them on! Such a cool
event! Thanks to everyone who
participated.

Congratulations to Nicole Allen for being named to the N.A.F.M.E. All-
National Honor Orchestra
She will represent not only Olathe North, but of the entire state
of Kansas. She qualified for this exciting opportunity by
auditioning and getting accepted into the NEKMEA (Northeast
Kansas Music Educators Association) District Orchestra and
from there went on to participate in the KMEA All-State
Orchestra. This qualified her to audition through video for the
N.A.F.M.E. (National Association for Music Education)
Orchestra Ensemble as a violinist. She submitted her audition
video in May and found out mid-June of her acceptance.
