Welcome to the latest edition of the North Notts Drinker.

Included in this issue is a great article detailing the extraordinary success of one of our branch members. Colin Tweed has achieved national recognition for his fantastic, home brewed beers and wines.

On a sadder note, we have had the passing of Ann Bownes. A long time North Notts Camra member and wife of our chairman Steve. Our thoughts are with Steve and his family at this diffi cult time.

Many thanks to all who have sent in copy for this (and previous) magazines. Please keep it coming in, unfortunately the publishing date for this issue has had to be delayed because we needed more articles. Stories or reports from our own area and branch members are far more interesting, in my opinion, than stuff that is taken (with consent) from other sources. Future articles that include photos will be especially appreciated. This magazine depends on YOU to send content in. Please keep up the good work.

It is with deep regret and with much sadness that we have to announce the death of Ann Bownes.

Ann, wife of North Notts Camra Chairman Steve Bownes, had been a member of CAMRA since 1995 and attended many events up until very recently. Ann and Steve had been married over 19 years and her untimely and sudden passing came as a huge blow to Steve.

Ann was always cheerful and enjoyed life to the full. She particularly enjoyed caravanning, fl ower arranging, crafting, reading and gardening as well as holidays in the Lake District. She leaves behind many good friends, who will miss her feisty, no nonsense, and good humoured approach to life.

Steve would like to thank all their many friends and Camra members for all their help and kindness during this diffi cult time. Especially; Paul Mann, Sue & Terry Johnson, Pat & Martin Thomson, Elaine & Gordon Town, Mel & Wayne Cadman, Elaine & Brian Cooper and Barbara & Chris Russon.

I’m sure that most of us from time to time have sampled the delights of a home brew; whether it be from a small 8 pint can bought

off the shelf in a home brew shop or something more ambitious such as establishing a 5 barrel plant in the kitchen. The problem with this, particularly the latter, is the lingering fragrance left behind and although you may enjoy the smell of a rich scented beer full of character and fl avour you cannot get away from the fact the house smells a little bit like a brewery.

Colin Tweed has got around this particular hurdle by moving lock stock and barrel (pun not intended) to the garden shed and has designed and equipped the interior with all the essential gear to produce a 25 litre (40 bottles) brew every fortnight.

Interestingly, it was wine that fi rst caught his interest way back in 1977 which led to him becoming a member of the Worksop and District Wine Makers. His enthusiasm and passion for wine making was well recognised and he became Chairman of the association in 2000, a position he held for the following 12 years. He entered and won many wine competitions, particularly during the 1980’s and 1990’s, which culminated in him becoming East Midlands Master Wine Maker in 2001. Not content in seeing his own wines being entered into competitions he became an East Midland Federation Judge in 2001 and a National Wine Judge in 2005.

However, more recently, his thoughts have turned more towards brewing. Initially brewing in the house, the idea of moving into a purpose built shed was suggested by a friend of his and in 2010 The Shed Brewery, aptly named, became into existence. An Engineer by profession Colin has used his skills in making a great many of the bits and pieces to furnish his new shed. Any additional items, that he has needed, he has bought on eBay. The result is a fully functional brewery, insulated, double glazed, with stainless steel tables and hot and cold running water installed. His enthusiasm

shown for wine making has continued into brewing with many beers being entered into and winning competitions. The highlight of this year was becoming National Master Brewer of 2013, a yearly event held nationwide. Also, continuing his desire to judge, and after a great deal of studying, Colin has recently become a National Beer Judge to add to his successes

In the brewing process Colin buys whole grains fresh and crushes them himself. He has, for ornamental purposes, grown his own hops in a small garden plot but for the fi rst time this year he has used them straight from the vine without fi rst drying in some of his beers. From a personal point of view, having sampled this particular brew I can say that it is one of the best beers I’ve ever tasted.

To maintain his integrity within the Wine and Beer Judging associations Colin is not permitted to sell the products he produces, a condition he holds very dear to his heart. You might think that with all that is produced he must have a great deal over, perhaps going to waste. This is certainly not the case as besides that which is used for his own, family and friends consumption he utilises many of his products for entering competitions, giving talks, donating raffl e prizes to charity and in regular sample tasting sessions. As a qualifi ed Wine and Beer Judge Colin is always available to give talks to organisations and particularly to anyone who needs help in wine making or brewing. He can be contacted by email at [email protected]

On Saturday 7th December the branch met up at the Anchor Inn, Worksop for our annual Christmas Dinner.

We were entertained by “Elvis” who kissed the ladies shook the men’s hands (I think it was that way round?) He then even sat on our Social Sec’s knee, looked longingly into his eyes and sang “Are You Lonesome Tonight.” He later also sang Happy Birthday to Diane Tweed, her husband Colin was later chatting away to Elvis’ dad. Very surreal!

Kev Keane our previous Secretary joined us from his new home in Ireland. It was good to catch up. As well as most of the regulars we were joined by two of our newest members, Gerald and Jean, who both said they thoroughly enjoyed the evening and thanked us for making

them so welcome. Our thanks go to Phil Owen of Dukeries

Brewery for providing us with the fi rst drink free from the new Duck’N’Dive bar (situated in the Anchor), which is well worth a visit.

Thanks also to Mark and Angela (landlord/landady) for a great night, with good food, good beer and great entertainment.

Several of us descended on the Anchor Inn in Worksop on the last Saturday in November to mark the opening of the DucknDive

Dukeries Tap. The existing tap room within the pub has been extensively refurbished to create a real drinkers pub in the old traditional style, with real ale being the only beer on tap. Six hand pulls will always be available and will comprise of 2 permanent Dukeries and 4 rotating guest beers. The really good news is the all of the real ales are priced at £2.50 a pint regardless of ABV and if you are unsure as to taste and texture you can order a selection of 3 beers, served up in thirds of a pint, at the same price. A range of continental bottle beers are also available and will all be served in branded glasses, including Anchor Steam Beer, an American brew, from San Francisco.

We all enjoyed the new atmosphere that has been created by the refurbishment, with a log fi re to keep warm by. Pump clips and beer mats adorn the open beams of the ceiling that become a spotters delight and if not careful, especially in my advancing years, a stiff neck – nothing that a good beer won’t cure, and plenty there to be had. I particularly enjoyed Dukeries Gunsmoke, coming in at 5.5ABV, a dark beer with a hint of caramel, that I found easy on the palate.

In keeping with the traditional bar atmosphere no meals will be served in the tap room and the television, often a distraction in many pubs, will be taken out. However, if you fancy a bite to eat a trip to the adjacent lounge is but a few feet away and you can even take your pint with you.

The tap room is open weekdays from 5.00pm and all day Saturday and Sunday and from my experience is certainly worth another visit.

The Idle Brewery began production in 2007 in a converted stable at the back of the White Hart Inn alongside the River Idle.

The brewery was founded by Brian Cooper who now also owns the White Hart Inn and is the brewery tap.

It might be off the beaten track but in this converted stable magic happens. There are no airs and graces about the building only wealth of stacks of barrels outside suggests what is going on.

Over the last six years the brewery as gone from a small sideline to burgeoning business supplying drinkers and pubs nationally. In the White Hart, there are always seven idle beers on tap at any given time. Anytime a visitor

asks about the brewery, Brian is always more than happy to explain about the brewing process and show them around.

B r e w e r y tours can be organised for up to a maximum of twenty people at a time.

On Thursday 3rd October, 10 of us travelled to the Castle and Falcon pub at Newark to take on the Newark branch

at Skittles. The Castle and Falcon is on London Road

and stands in the shadow of the old historic Hole’s brewery. It has 2 regular beers, John Smiths and Wells and Young’s plus 1 local guest.

After fi rst charging our glasses we were invited by the Secretary to sit in on their Branch meeting. It was interesting to see how another branch conducts and also to have an insight into what issues are topical at their meetings.

After a few more beers, we went outside to the Skittles Alley at the side of the pub, a good old fashioned skittle alley.

Lots of jovial banter and light hearted barracking ensued once the bowls and wooden skittles started bouncing around, one heavy wooden bowl went over the roof and rear wall

into the alley in next doors garden, never to be found again! After about 2 hours of heated battle and much drinking the scores were totted up and Newark won by 1 point. In the spirit of fair we immediately demanded a recount...But they still won by 1 point. We then retired to lick our wounds and plot our revenge followed by hot dogs and chips and much more beer.

A great night was had by all, which was brilliant fun with cracking company.

We are having a return visit to the Mallard at Worksop on the evening of February 19th when we will be hosting a quiz night. Come and join in the fun.
