WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD
Gathering Time Hymn 853 We Are Marching in the Light of God Hymn 752 Dona nobis pacem
Greeting, Welcome, and Opportunities for Discipleship Welcome to our guests and visitors! We invite you, if you feel comfortable, to
introduce yourself at this time. We are glad you are here. We hope you will fill out the friendship pad (in the pew holder) to help us get acquainted. We also invite you to join us in Westminster Hall for coffee hour.
Everyone—please silence your cell phones.
Prelude Andante Tranquillo (Korean melodies “Bai” and Arirang”) Burkhardt
Call to Worship Sing to the Lord, whose mercy is from everlasting to everlasting! But how can we sing the Lord’s song when so many are without? Sing to the Lord, whose faithfulness renews us every morning! But how can we sing the Lord’s song when so many are gone? Sing to the Lord, who has not forgotten the melodies of salvation! Let us remember the joy of the Lord, and sing a new song together!
Invocation
*Hymn 39 Great Is Thy Faithfulness (During the singing of the hymn, please pass prayer requests to center aisle.)
*Call to Confession
*Prayer of Confession Almighty God, mother of mercy, father of grace: You have called us to one table, but we have pursued our own course. You have promised the abundance of all creation, but in our greed, and in our envy, the world goes without. You have promised us the bread of life itself, but in our pride, and in our arrogance, the world goes hungry. You have promised us the waters of peace and justice, but in our violence, and in our discord, the world goes thirsty. And now we are famished, too, Lord. Have mercy on us. Forgive us, again. Transform us, at this table, and for this table, and send us from this table as servants of your righteousness, by the power of your Son, our Lord. Amen.
*Silent Confession
*Assurance of Forgiveness Hear the good news!
God loves us. God forgives us.
*Response Hymn # 591 (Refrain) Halle, Halle, Halleluja! Halle, Halle, Halleluja! Halle, Halle, Halleluja!
Halleluja! Halleluja! Halleluja!
*Passing of the Peace Having received Christ’s peace, let us share it by turning to our neighbors and greeting them, saying “May the peace of Christ be with you!”
WE HEAR THE WORD OF GOD
Prayer for Illumination
Scripture Reading Lamentations 3:19-26 p.766 2 Timothy 1:1-14 p.211
Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God.
Sermon “Seeking Refuge in a Hostile World” The Rev. Bill Hennessy
WE RESPOND AND GIVE THANKS TO GOD
*Affirmation of Faith (adapted from the Belhar Confession) We believe in one holy, universal Christian church, the unity of the communion of saints of the entire human family. And we believe that this unity of the people of God must be manifest and active, in that we love one another; that we give ourselves willingly and joyfully to one another; that we share one baptism together; that we eat of one bread and drink one cup together; that we confess one name, one Lord, for one cause, with one hope, which is the height and the breadth and the depth and the love of Christ, forever and ever. Amen.
Offering Offertory: Halle, Halle, Hallelujah (Caribbean) arr.Behnke
*Doxology Hymn 607 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise Christ, all people here below; praise Holy Spirit evermore; praise Triune God, whom we adore. Amen.
Celebration of the Lord’s Supper The Invitation to the Lord’s Table
Anthem At the Table of the World Wren and Johengen
Great Prayer of Thanksgiving
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.
It is truly right…sing to the glory of your name:
Holy, Holy, Holy © 1986 by GIA Publications, Inc
Blessed is he…Great is the mystery of faith:
Christ Has Died

Gracious God…who first taught us to pray, saying:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
Communion of the People Our Lord invites all who trust in him, and all who long to trust in him, to share in this meal, which he has prepared. Communion will be received by intinction. Please come down the center aisle to receive the elements and return at the side aisles. (If your diet requires gluten-free bread, please go to the station at the foot of the steps in the center.)
Prayer after Communion Gracious God, we offer our thanks, for the whole communion of saints’ witness to this feast, and for the ministry of churches around the world who gather with us today. By this broken bread may we each be restored for the work yet to come. By this shared cup may we each be claimed for the proclamation of your Kingdom. At this shared table may we be united as children of your promise, children of your word, dying and made new again, sent boldly together into the world as servants of your peace. Amen.
WE DISPERSE TO SERVE GOD IN THE WORLD
*Hymn 361 O Christ, the Great Foundation
*Charge
*Benediction
*The Peace of the Earth Be with You (Guatemalan) arr. John Bell
*Postlude Siyahamba (South African) arr. Behnke
*Those who are able, please stand.

Peacemaking Offering Received Today
The Peacemaking Offering will be received today. This is one of four special offerings in the
year of the Presbyterian Church (USA). Gifts given to the Peacemaking Offering will be used
to support Presbytery and Synod peacemaking efforts. A portion of the offering remains with
a local agency selected by the NPC Mission Committee. This year we have selected Yogis in
Service, a Buffalo-based non-profit volunteer organization with a mission to create access to
yoga for members of our community. Practitioners of yoga speak of improving physical and
emotional well-being and of gaining feelings of empowerment and coping skills. Participants
tell how yoga has helped them deal with life stresses in their community where poverty and
violence are prevalent.
Religion in the Public Square: An Interfaith Workshop at North and Shir Shalom
North Church folks, please help us host Rabbi Glenn Jacob, executive director of Interfaith
Power and Light, at North Church on Wednesday, October 19 (7:30 p.m.), as he gives his talk,
“Speak Up” about how congregations can be effective advocates for climate policy at state
and national levels. He is considered the religious voice on global warming. He will also be
speaking at Congregation Shir Shalom on Tuesday, October 18 (7:30 p.m.) on “Green Up,”
how congregations can be good stewards by reducing their carbon footprint. Both talks are
free and open to the public. Invite a friend and don’t miss these wonderful opportunities in
this election year to bring your questions to Rabbi Jacob. (Read more on page 6 of the
October North Star.)
Music in Exile: Will You Consider Supporting this Project?
Last week during the 10:45 a.m. worship service, Alex Ebsary spoke to you about Music in
Exile, a unique opportunity for you to support Iraqi and Syrian musicians displaced by
sectarian violence. This fall, Alex will travel to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq on behalf of Music
in Exile. The recordings will be hosted on an interactive website where visitors will be able to
listen to music, see photographs, and read stories about each artist’s life. To learn more
about the project and help fund it, visit www.facebook.com/MusicinExile or e-mail Alex at
Rummage and Bake Sale
Thank you to everyone who organized this fundraiser held on Saturday, September 24, to
help offset the church’s deficit. The total raised was nearly $2300!
Communion at Home
On the afternoon of the Sundays when communion is served at North Church, teams of
Elders and Deacons take communion to parishioners who are unable to attend the regular
church service. The elements for the Lord’s Supper will have been consecrated at the regular
service. A reading of scripture and prayers accompany the distribution of the elements.
Friends and family are welcome to participate.
Homebound parishioners known to the pastor will be contacted by telephone to see if the
communion service is desired and to arrange for a time. If anyone wishes to receive
communion at home, or if anyone knows of another person who wishes such to be provided,
please call the church office at 716-632-1330, or speak to Pastor Bill or a Deacon.
If you have been ordained as an elder or deacon in the Presbyterian Church USA (even if you
are not now actively serving) and would like to participate as a server in this ministry, please
let Pastor Bill or a Deacon know.
Sunday Morning Adult Education—9:30 a.m., Library
Divine Violence: Have you struggled with the seeming disconnect between the God of
violence in Judges and Revelation and the God of nonviolence in Psalm 23 and the Gospels?
John Dominic Crossan states: “The biblical God is, on one hand, a God of nonviolent
distributive justice and on the other hand, a God of violent retributive justice. How do we
reconcile these two visions?” For Crossan’s answer and to craft your own, read his new book
How to Read the Bible and Still Be a Christian or come to the DVD discussion series in the
beginning Sunday, October 2.
Sunday Morning Adult Education Bible Study—9:30 a.m., Resource Center
We have begun the fall season of the adult education Bible study The Parables of Jesus. The
study leaders are volunteers. We are reading and discussing the parables of Jesus in the
Synoptic Gospels. Books and study guides are not required. Come join us.

“How is your congregation serving your neighbors near and far?”
Join us for food, worship and discussion about mission and service. Our meal will be a
catered pasta/meatballs/salad/bread dinner, paid for through donations from our April
meeting. Bring a dessert or vegetable if you wish; not necessary though.
Branch meetings are a way for churches in four regions of the Presbytery to connect. By
interacting in these non-business meetings, lay people and clergy can get to know one
another better. We can nurture one another and our churches. Childcare can be provided
upon request.
Mission Statement
Brought together by our shared faith in
Jesus Christ,
Called by God to live as faithful disciples,
Blessed by our diverse gifts and experiences,
We commit ourselves to:
