I would like to congratulate all staff and students for their actions and support during our fire evacuation on Wednesday 4 October. I am very thankful that we had no injuries and everyone followed procedure as practiced. It is a big task to evacuate 910 students, 130 staff and visitors and to then keep everyone safe and calm with little knowledge of what is happening and when it is likely to end. I am very proud of our staff and students and the professional manner in which they conducted themselves. I am also very grateful for the wonderful response from our emergency services who had fire brigade, ambulance and police to the school almost immediately. The quick response certainly reduced the damage and possible loss of our Home Economics kitchens and the staffroom in D Block. As usual with a significant event there are lots of stories about what happened and not all of them are true. The facts are as follows; We are very aware of the lack of shade on the oval. This time next year it will not be a problem as the new sports shed will provide cover, toilets and water so should resolve most of this problem. Smoke was reported coming from D Block just after 10:00am. There were no staff or students in D Block at the time. The electric bells did not work due to an electrical fault and a hand bell was used to alert staff and students. Students and staff evacuated to the oval quickly and safely. Several students were taken from the oval to hospital in ambulances as a safety precaution. The fire brigade was called and was here very quickly and the fire was extinguished. The power was cut to the entire school during the emergency. The school did not have access to phones or computers until the power was restored. During an emergency the control of the school goes to the emergency services Chief Officer and they decide when the evacuation can end and staff and students are able to access buildings again. The building has been assessed to see what damage has been caused and what repairs are needed. The fire was caused by an electrical fault. The asbestos warning letter was emailed to parents/ carers as the building contains some asbestos materials. No students or staff were exposed to this material. The building is now an out of bounds area and students should stay outside the temporary fencing that has been erected. Classes that were scheduled in D Block have been issued a new timetable and room changes have been organised. We will be unable to access the two kitchens for an extended period of time as repairs are done. This will impact Home Economics classes.

We are also aware of the confusion that comes with studentswanting to go home or parents wanting to collect students. Itis very difficult to provide information and make decisions whenwe do not know when the power will be returned and clearanceto access buildings/areas will be given.

YEAR 11 CO-ORDINATORWeek one saw the Year 11 Leadership Camp head off toCooee Bay in Yeppoon for two days of activities andchallenges. The group began with team building gamesculminating in the “milk crate challenge”. A local record wascreated as students worked together to create a free standingstructure of 35 milk crates on top of each other. A quickcalculation had the structure standing 14 metres tall, animpressive example of what team work can achieve.

Students also hit the water in the canoes where ideal conditionssaw students paddle in pairs from Lammermoor Beach to theYeppoon Sailing club, a distance of several kilometres. Forsome students with limited canoeing experience, this was thehighlight of the camp and it was high fives all around as pairsemerged from the water exhausted.

The visit to the Centenary of ANZAC Memorial Walk at EmuPark was a sombre affair as students studied the stories ofthe service men and women intently. The legacy of thoseAustralians who served unselfishly so others could live freely isan example not lost on the students of North RockhamptonState High School.

I would like to thank the students who attended for theirexemplary behaviour and effort as well as Mr Hinds, MrsAddison and Chappy Aaron for ensuring the camp was asuccess.

We now move into the final term of 2017. Students would beaware this is only an eight week term with assessment reachinga peak with exam block starting in week seven. I would askall students to ensure they are on task, and as always, ensureattendance is as high as possible to ensure they are preparedfor the demands of their schooling.

Thechallenge took in a format of four rounds of multiple choicequestions regarding economics and law; accounting, businessand management as well as current affairs and generalknowledge. The winning students received a scholarship forstudy in the Faculty of Business and Law at CQ Uni. Schools from Cairns all the way down to Melbourneparticipated through a videolink. The overall winner was aschool from Townsville. Our students were very competitiveand demonstrated excellent knowledge in all areas of thechallenge.

Year 12 Legal Studies students Elizabeth Hiley, Corey Hardyand Ethan Suli represented North Rockhampton State Highin the Interschool Law Debate organised by the CentralQueensland Law Association and Central QueenslandUniversity. This year was an especially momentous occasionwith the debate being judged by Her Honour Justice CatherineHomes, the Chief Justice of Queensland, local Supreme Courtjudge, Justice Duncan McMeekin and Regional CoordinatingMagistrate, Cameron Press.

These three students demonstrated exemplary research skillsand showed maturity beyond their years in arguing for thenegative on the topic of ‘Parole is no longer appropriate intoday’s society’. Even though our students lost to the overallwinners of the night, the judges praised our students on theirthorough investigation of the topic and level of composure.

With the assistance of the two legal mentors, SamanthaLegrady and Charles Shepherd, students were able to gain aninsight into the degree of expertise required to argue a casebefore a judge. All three students represented our school withpride and enjoyed being able to converse with the Chief Justiceand local Rockhampton Justice and Magistrate following thedebate.

BREASTSCREEN QUEENSLANDIt is so important that women of screening age book their2yearly appointments in. Currently close to 40% of eligiblewomen do not keep up with their screening, and we would liketo see that changed in Central Queensland this year.

Even if you aren’t part of that age group, by sharing with womenwho are you can help be part of this change.
