FINANCIAL STATEMENT

When Merton & Theresa Roberts joined Charles & Ruth Schauffele and 15 other families to form North Shore Christian School, their vision was fueled by a desire to have “Christian education taught in all subjects through God’s word.” The Roberts enrolled their eldest daughter Elaine, who, though terribly shy, was grateful to escape the clutches of a dreaded teacher at her previous school. Her enrollment commenced a relationship with North Shore Christian School that would define her family’s legacy.

As a fourth grader, Elaine joined 12 other children, spanning grades 1 to 8, in the big meeting room above Phythian Hall in Saugus. This composite class was under the tutelage of the very capable Mrs. Ruth Schauffele. Elaine also recalls that one of her teachers, Mrs. Brown, perceived that she had a frail ego. Mrs. Brown challenged Elaine to memorize and believe Phil. 4:13. “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” It is a scripture that guides Elaine to this day.

Those experiences later informed Elaine and her husband Doug’s decision to send their own three sons to NSCS. “I always wanted them to have a Christian education because of the one I so appreciated,” says Elaine. NSCS became an extension of their own family, and the community of believers encouraged their faith and supported their parenting. Elaine remarks, “At a Christian school, you are never alone; neither is your family. “ She and her husband served in various capacities at the school. They joined their gifts in service for work days and field trips, and Doug did everything from serving as the janitor to serving as Chairman of the Board.

Some of Elaine’s own children have also extended the family’s commitment to the school by enrolling their children and by serving just as she, her husband Doug, and her own parents had. Over the years, Elaine has given of her time, her treasure, and her talent. She says, “I want the school to continue to be available to parents of the North Shore…to give them an alternative.” Elaine acknowledges that those years of service…of building a community, emanate from simple obedience to God’s command in Deuteronomy:

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”

She reflects, “Our family made a difference in the life of NSCS, and NSCS made a difference in our life.”

There is a tree planted at the entrance of the NSCS Lynn campus in honor of Doug who passed away in 1992. Elaine says that when she sees that tree, it reminds her of what her husband “gave his life to.”
