Modern Jewish heroes
were recognized at an event
at the North Shore Jewish
Center in Port Jefferson Sta-
tion last Wednesday.A group of eight sixth- and
seventh-graders held a debate
to decide who is the most in-
fluential modern Jewish hero,
in front of their families and
other Hebrew school classes.
The event was called
“Hagiborim Shelanu” which
is Hebrew for “Our Heroes.”

A wintery nor’easter barreled
through the northeast over the
weekend, and the Three Village
community was hardly spared.
Snow accumulation totals
were in the double-digits with
the Setauket and Stony Brook
area received more than 20
inches of snow by the time the
storm subsided. But the horrific
weather conditions did little to
deter the North Shore commu-
nity, officials who worked on the
front lines said.Dr. James A. Vosswinkel,
Stony Brook University Hospi-
tal’s chief of trauma surgery, said
the community has gotten better
at facing dangerous weather over
recent years, and it showed over
the weekend.“We set up for it, but fortunate-
ly, I think after all the bad weather
we’ve had . . . people have really
started to listen to news adviso-
ries,” he said. “We haven’t had as
much bad stuff.”Stony Brook University Hospi-
tal set up an emergency operating
center at the university’s campus
over the weekend as it anticipated
students from across the country
to move into its resident halls. The
center worked as a three-dimen-
sional model that allows for man-
agement of Stony Brook systems
across the campus in real-time, a
spokeswoman said.
