Dear Friends,
The season of fall with the Thanksgiving holiday is my favorite
time of the year. The rich fall colors remind me of the beauty
found in God’s creation. Driving past the forest preserves and
harvested fields, as I travel to Racine for worship workshops,
give witness to God’s abundance and the bountiful blessings we
have received through all our days of living. We are a blessed
people, even during times of difficulties; there remains something
or someone for whom we can give thanks as we are supplied
with a helping hand in the midst of hardship.
As I write this article today during a flurry of activity of Rummage
preparation, I want to lift up my thanks to you, the people of North Shore UMC who
have been present with helping hands in numerous ways and who have served as a
source of blessing to others. Through the tremendous work that has taken place to
ensure a successful sale that supports our mission and ministries, through your
continued generosity as you give of your time and talents to other projects such as:
Family Promise, the Soup Kitchen and PRESS, and as you have prayed, visited, made
telephone calls and sent cards to those who are recovering or home bound. You are
providing blessings to others and you serve as a symbol of God’s presence by your
human touch. This is what church should be, and this is what our church is called to do
for you do it well. So- as we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving in the coming weeks,
and as we take time to reflect upon the blessings we have received, allow me this
opportunity to express my gratitude and appreciation for all of you and for your ministry
to others.
Thank you North Shore UMC for your witness and generosity. Thank you for your
dedication and commitment to our church family. Thank you for who you are and the
talents you possess. Thank You!
God’s Blessings and all Good Things,
Pastor Glenna

Reaquaint yourself with …
By Ellen Paseltiner
Brian Brandt came to North Shore United Methodist Church
with his wife Kathy Cole when they were looking for a place to have their 1 1/2 year-old daughter Ashley baptized. Brian's mother, who was Catholic, told his cousin that she was concerned that Ashley was not baptized yet. So, Brian and Kathy started calling churches in Glencoe. Reverend David Tracy of North Shore UMC came to visit them at their home in response to their call. They liked Reverend Tracy's demeanor. He said Brian and Kathy did not have to join the church, and he'd be happy to baptize their daughter. They've been coming to the church ever since.
In the early years of his life, Brian lived in Chicago. His mother went to the Catholic Church across the street from their home. The family moved to Lockport, Illinois later. When Brian was in first grade, they lived in Duluth, Minnesota. He remembers that they went to a Protestant church then.
He described it as a terrific church, very beautiful. Brian vividly remembers Vacation Bible School on the shores of Lake Superior. They were not there long and moved on to Toledo, Ohio. His family tried attending a Baptist Church, but eventually stopped going. When Brian was about 13, he and his friend Bob started going to the Calvary Evangelical United Brethren Church on their own. They would attend without their parents and went for a couple years. Brian said that they were "accused" of going for the food that was served, but he claims that was not it. He also remembers that it was the church with a sign in neon lights saying, "Jesus Saves".
Kathy and Brian met in college at Miami of Ohio. They went to church a few times during their senior year. It was the same church that Brian's Accounting professor attended, so he thinks it may have helped his accounting grade that year. Kathy and Brian were married in 1970, went to graduate school, and moved to Glencoe in 1975.
Brian has enjoyed singing in the choir at NSUMC for many years. He was recruited during a church caroling party that was held in the neighborhood. Ed Kemp noticed that Brian liked to sing and indicated he should join the choir. Brian has been head of the Administrative Council, served on Trustees, and many other aspects of the life at North Shore United Methodist. He believes the youth activities for his daughters Ashley and Bernadette were a very special part of their growing up. He remembers when the youth group held a Passover Seder one year.

weekly church services also need your
attention
fter such a successful rummage sale, it is imperative for all
members to remember the weekly work in the church cannot be
fully achieved without volunteer assistance.
While the clergy of nsumc works hard to present an organized,
intelligent service every Sunday morning, their work is enhanced as
members of the church become involved as readers of the Scriptures,
provide flowers for an aesthetically beautiful sanctuary, and create
a warm and inviting atmosphere at hospitality time by bringing items of
food to share as visitors, along with members of NSUMC, socialize with
each other.
In order to facilitate a logical schedule of contributors, sign-up sheets
are found on the tables in the narthex. Consider putting your name on
any or all of them.
Remember, if each family were to contribute one thing on a weekly basis
(either reading, bringing flowers, or items for the hospitality table)
the entire year would be covered throughout and there would be no
more need for these requests.
Thank you for your consideration and assistance to the North Shore
United Methodist Church.
