Why North Shore Wedding Magazine?You can get wedding-planning information from just about anywhere these days, from

David Tutera’s My Fair Wedding, to the numerous bridal chat rooms that are filled with

even more numerous opinions. It is, however, more difficult to find specific information

on the area in which you are getting married. Sure, it’s great to be inspired by a rustic-

themed wedding in California that you saw on a blog, but how do you find a florist on

the North Shore who can recreate that bouquet for you? We want to help you turn that

inspiration into a reality. Our goal is to showcase and uncover the charm and elegance

of weddings in the North Shore region of Massachusetts so you can create the best day

possible.

We’ve been hard at work visiting reception sites, talking with wedding professionals,

producing a bridal fashion shoot at the beautiful Willowdale Estate, and simply learning

more about what makes this region a special place to get married. It always comes down

to the people who make it all happen: the wedding vendors. I’m thrilled to say that those

I have met so far are as genuine as they are talented. Brides and grooms, you are in good

T he path to their wedding day was a curvy one, but Emily and Dan never lost sight of each other through the twists and turns. Although they first met in 2002, it wasn’t until 2009 that they knew they were meant to be together. Through those seven years, opportunties and choices would navigate

them away from each other, but like a gravitational pull, they would end up crossing paths again. The final time was in New York City, where, coincidentally, they were living three blocks from each other. It was then that they realized they couldn’t lose each other another time, Emily recalls. From that moment, they remained bonded, on the same path. Dan attended graduate school in New York so they could be together. And the next year, on Emily’s birthday, Dan proposed. The rest, as they say, is history.

F or Julianne and Greg, it was all about moments—smaller, individual moments that added up to a magnificently emotional day. Surrounded by family and friends, they found themselves taking mental snapshots as the day unfolded. Julianne recalls the breathless, romantic moments shared

when she and Greg saw each other at the Tea House for the first time. Their soaring emotions continued as they gathered for family photos and realized just how lucky they were to have such amazing people surrounding them in their passage to husband and wife. And as the formalities led to the fun of the reception, Julianne admits that there were “wild moments on the dance floor, as evidenced by the sorry state of our garments at the end of the evening.” The most exciting moment however, they both agree, was the moment they realized that their journey had only just begun.

F or Kim and David, their wedding day was about returning to the place where it had all begun. Many years earlier, while both attending Phillips Academy in Andover, they met in Sophomore English class. From that fateful first date at the Sadie Hawkins dance, they never looked back. Even as their

college educations took them to different states, Kim and David endured the long distance. Then, on another fateful evening ten years after that first meeting, David proposed outside their Boston brownstone apartment. In a symbolic gesture, they returned home and took the next step of their journey from the place where it all started.

Brides were able to glide from one season into the next as they entered each room. Table designs of rich browns and oranges adorned one setting in the fall room. On a table in the spring room, a rectangular box of grass dotted with Gerber daisies evoked that fresh and beautiful time of year. Passed hors d’oeuvres, aperitifs, and side dishes were offered throughout the event to enhance the experience of what each season has to offer. There is no element of the wedding day that is left out—from bridal gowns to transportation, each aspect is represented so couples can truly pull all the pieces together in their planning.

The genius behind this showcase is an impressive consortium of wedding professionals called the Wedding Creators, based in North Reading. Two members are chosen from each category and vetted thoroughly before being accepted. They must have demonstrated industry excellence, a track record of exceeding client expectations, and a substantial number of years in the business. As a group, they come together to be greater than the sum of their parts, but individually, each stands firmly within the wedding industry with an above-average reputation.

“One of the best commitments of the group,” explains Debbie Webb from Yours Truly Invitations & Calligraphy, “is that we meet once a month at different venues. This gives us first-hand knowledge of many different facilities, and we can then pass that knowledge onto our clients.” Having informed advice on the planning details can make for a more comfortable day. “If we have been to the site,” continues Debbie, “we can advise on where a quartet might fit most comfortably, for example, or where to locate place cards for your guests.”

Mark your calendars for the next Seasons event, scheduled for Sunday, November 4, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Boston-Woburn. The group will be transforming a ballroom to reflect the seasons of New England, using products and themes that epitomize spring, summer, winter, and fall. See the Calendar of Events on page 13 for more details.

All That Music

I think in the next few years you will see multi-day wedding celebrations become more popular. One day isn’t enough when family and friends have traveled long distances. With this comes the invitation to children, as families will not want to commit multiple days to a celebration without being able to

bring children along. So, I think you will see more attention paid to children’s activities such as clowns,

balloon making, and arts and crafts, as well as the hiring of on-site sitters and nannies.

Enter Gail Fitzpatrick.

With a sweep of the brush, she transports you to a moment in time that would be hard to capture in any other medium. You can almost hear the laughter, the music, and the clinking of the glasses as she writes your story on her canvas. By “life sketching,” Gail organizes many small moments into one scene and creates a painting that delivers so much life and movement that it feels real.

Gail understands the significance of small moments. It was, in fact, a seemingly insignificant moment that brought her to the calling of live event painting. She remembers one hot afternoon when she decided to “play hooky” by shuffling through ads on Craigslist. It was there that she found an ad for an experienced artist to create a one-of-a-kind work of art for a wedding. After meeting with the bride and hearing her vision, Gail was inspired. She was hired and hasn’t looked back since. Her inspiration continues to thrive in the spontaneity of each event.

The process is time intensive and the attention to detail shows in the final product. Gail will sometimes spend four hours prepping, which entails scouting the location and beginning the background of the painting. Then she spends four to five hours at the reception creating the masterpiece, and even more time back in the studio applying finishing touches.

As with any good artist, the process should not be rushed, and patience pays off. As she will tell you, “Your live event deserves its own work of art,” and you won’t be disappointed.

Add two champagne flutes, beautifully presented in a basket, and you have the perfect gift for the bride and groom on their wedding night.

Lasting impressionFingerprint rings make a unique and personal statement

There is no symbol of the love between two people that is more enduring than the bands they exchange on their wedding

day. For couples looking for a deeply personal expression of their bond, fingerprint rings offer an intimate and unique way to honor the special connection they share. Imprinted with each other’s one-of-a-kind fingerprint on the inside or outside, these custom pieces can be crafted in silver, gold, white gold, platinum, palladium, bronze, and beyond.

Erdem Kaya of Newburyport’s Kaya Jewelers uses a wax molding process to capture the perfect print. “We come up with the design based on what kind of ring they’d like to have. Then we take a

wax carving, warm it, and have them put their fingerprint on it—it’s much like putting your finger in clay. When dry, we cast the molding to get the identical design into the metal.” While the family-owned jewelry store has been designing fingerprint rings for more than ten years in its Newburyport and Portsmouth locations, modern technology now allows couples to see their designs on 3D CAD/CAM

software before the process even begins. As the shop specializes in custom jewelry, the process can take one to three weeks.

Jessica and Brent Williams, the artisan jewelers of Brent&Jess, have designed fingerprint rings since the early 2000s. The Maine couple uses a sculptural process to get the fingerprint impression, which is then made into a ring. “It’s very special to get married. The rings epitomize just how sentimental the moment is,” explains Jessica, who often designs them for children in newly blended families. She and Brent consult with couples about their designs online, send them a kit to make the impressions, then complete the rings eight to ten weeks later. “Jess and Brent are amazing!” says Sadie, a Boston-area bride. “It doesn’t get more custom than actually having your loved one’s real fingerprint in your ring.”

Mark William Fine Art Jeweler, a custom online jeweler, uses the traditional ink-on-paper method to capture prints, providing specialized ink strips to clients. The company offers video design consultations for everything from dramatic etched rings to designs emblazoned with family crests. Rings average three or more weeks to complete.

As a couture bridal designer, Matthew Christopher believes in the power of a first impression, especially when it comes to a bride seeing herself in a wedding dress for the first time. Since 2002, the New York City designer has mesmerized brides with his breathtaking collection of luxurious, ultra-glamorous silhouettes with gorgeous embellishments and show-stopping lines. He recently visited 125 Bridal Boutique & Tuxedo in Plaistow, New Hampshire to help local brides discover the dress of their dreams at his Mother’s Day weekend trunk show.

“There really is something about the first gown you put on the bride. So the sales consultant and I choose the dress that will have the best impression, because when she looks at herself in the mirror, that’s it—right there!” he says. Natalie Hanson, 125 Bridal Boutique’s store manager, agrees, “Eighty percent of brides buy one of the first five dresses they try on.”

Each of Matthew’s designs is resplendent with cinematic drama, striking architectural lines, and stunning signature details. A true artist who stars as the dashing, impeccably coiffed leading man in his advertisements, Matthew takes inspiration from everyday things like old movies and architectural and organic elements, and creates something exquisite and unique. This results in his wonderfully flattering, jaw-dropping silhouettes and meticulously executed details, from dramatic bias-cut silk to intricately beaded crystal motifs.

Cynthia Vitacolonna, Matthew Christopher stylist and sales specialist with Malis-Henderson, Elen Henderson Designs, a couture bridal accessory company, selects the stunning headpieces, veils, and jewelry for Matthew’s runway looks, trunk shows, and photo shoots. “Accessories make the bridal experience that much more individual, and a trunk show is a great way to highlight couture pieces. Working together with Matthew and being able to offer brides an amazing experience is key,” she explains.

A graduate of Iowa State University who studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, Matthew learned sewing and patternmaking at a young age and knew early on that this is what he was destined to do. As his brides will attest, when it’s right, you just know it.

North Shore Wedding spoke with Matthew during his trunk show, where he shared his insights on his new collection and tips for finding the perfect dress.

Can you describe the inspiration behind your 2012 collection?For 2012, I was inspired by lace—lace has been coming back so much. The inspiration was mostly that it was my ten-year anniversary, and it was about stepping out of the box and doing some really beautiful, grand pieces. I think I just wanted to give a really big “POW” that said “This is what I can do, this is where I can go as a designer,” and I think it’s also the beginning of a bunch of different things that can happen with us. I think you’ve noticed I’ve definitely evolved as a bridal designer, especially with this past collection.

Is there a particular style or fashion era you’re especially drawn to? I’m definitely a Hollywood-glamour type of guy, and a lot of my dresses tend to be geared to red carpet looks. I’m such a big musical person—this year’s musical is Singing in the Rain. I’ve always had ad campaigns that had something that was inspired by an old movie or an era. You look back at anything that was ’30s- or ’40s-based, and it will just blow your mind when it comes to lighting and makeup and hair and costumes in a lot of the big, big musicals. There’s actually one musical—it’s called Till the Clouds Roll By with Judy Garland, Lena Horne, everybody you can imagine—I watch it over and over. There are aspects of that movie that I’ve used to inspire myself. And Art Deco—you know that feel from that time—it’s so rich and very glam. I can’t remember a time in art history in this last century that’s been so grand—the furs and the hair and the way everyone was dressed to the nines.

What are most brides looking for in a dress now? Brides are definitely spending more, and they want something that is beautiful and timeless. Girls really want that vintage-modern look. I think Alençon lace—when it comes to a couture gown—has the most vintage look across the board. And you can pass that down, too. When I’m working with a bride and I’m talking about a lace gown, I tell her, “This is an heirloom piece for your family. I mean, this is something you pull out years from now,” and she says, “Wow, I really chose something that’s classically beautiful and is not like everything else on the market right now.”

Which fabric do you enjoy working with the most? You know what I’ve loved my whole life? Silk-satin organza. It’s not too light, it’s not too heavy, and it does amazing things! The dress called Dahlia—that’s silk-satin organza. A lot of my gowns that sell like hotcakes are silk-satin organza. But, of course, I love silk duchess. Who doesn’t love a silk duchess dress? It’s like royalty, you know?

Do you have any styling tips you would like to offer? I wish more of my brides would wear hats—and short dresses! Also, don’t buy your shoes until your gown comes in. A lot of my brides go for couture shoes and want Manolos or Jimmy Choos with their dress. But before you get your heart set on the shoes, you want to make sure they will really work with the dress.

What would you tell a bride-to-be who is setting out to find her dream dress? I think that vision in your head is the only one that is going to work, and when you’re trying on gowns, don’t go and try a hundred dresses. You only need to try on ten different gowns. Shopping around for a dress, you don’t need to go to ten stores, either. You only need to go to one or two really great stores, and go back to the place where you had your best experience.

Known for its dramatic, rolling lawns, Castle Hill, a National Historic Landmark on Ipswich’s Crane Estate, is home to the Great House, a truly elegant

setting for ceremonies and receptions. The 1928 mansion features captivating seventeenth-century English architecture, meticulously appointed décor, and a striking view of the Grand Allée, the lush expanse of grass that spans 2,000 feet outward to the ocean bluffs. “What couples appreciate about the Crane Estate is that it’s secluded and intimate, though it’s so grand. The 2,100-acre estate, which includes a wildlife refuge and the popular Crane Beach, holds special meaning for the local families who have been visiting the property for generations. “A lot of our couples came here on their first date or used to come here with their parents. There’s a real lineage of family history,” she explains.

In Manchester-by-the-Sea, the beautifully restored Crowell Chapel offers historic charm with artisan details. Constructed of gray granite, the 108-year-old non-denominational chapel is designed in the Gothic style. Inside, the chapel radiates with the light from the intricate stained glass window above the altar depicting two trees entwined—a symbol of family unity. “It’s spectacular and very unique. All of the

elements were meticulously restored with such care to ensure their preservation,” says Chris “Woody” Kelly, Manchester Community Preservation Committee chairman and president of the Historic Manchester Trust. “It’s one of the town’s true gems,” adds architectural photographer Steve Rosenthal of the chapel, which includes a 60-foot oak ceiling, striking windows, and beautifully carved pews.

With its gorgeous fieldstone manor and beautifully cultivated grounds, the Willowdale Estate in Topsfield offers a romantic atmosphere of charm and understated elegance. This turn-of-the-century estate, once the summer home of Bradley Palmer, features Arts and Crafts-era details, from mission-style lighting to striking woodwork and windows rich with character. “Our couples are inspired by the thought and talent represented in the structure and details of the estate and often use elements of the property as a starting place to design their event,” says Sarah Boucher, Willowdale’s assistant planning manager, citing a wedding cake design that was inspired by the Delft tiles on the dining room’s fireplace and recalling a 1920s Great Gatsby-themed wedding that was especially fitting, given the parties Bradley Palmer hosted for presidents, royalty, and other luminaries on the estate during that era.

sCouples wishing to create a historic ambience can use well-orchestrated candlelight and inspired decorative accents to bring romance to any type of setting. “Lighting is so important. It really sets the mood,” says wedding designer Jillian McDonough of New England Vintage, who complements traditional lighting with candles and lanterns. At Willowdale, romantic lights twinkle in the garden tent while glistening votives flicker on the manor’s mantels and windowsills. To capture the romance of a historic wedding with flowers, Kathleen Terranova, owner of McLay’s Florist in North Andover, recommends garden roses for their lush, full bloom and mesmerizing scent, and suggests adding an heirloom brooch to a bridal bouquet for a vintage touch. McDonough uses antique tea services bursting with blossoms to create exquisite centerpieces.

The crowning touch for a historic wedding is a gown that conveys all of the romance and beauty the bride wants to exude on her special day. “Today’s brides are looking for lace,” says Ashley Rowell, bridal consultant with Abbey Bridal in Andover, explaining how a fresh silhouette, such as a fitted, trumpet-style gown, can give a modern twist to an otherwise traditional lace dress. Matthew Sobaski of Matthew Christopher Couture recommends “a simple Alençon lace dress, a caged veil, and some amazing glam jewelry” for a simple, yet elegant modern-meets-vintage look.

Juicy red tomatoes; sweet, luscious berries; and crisp, sugared corn—these are just some of the fruits and vegetables being grown at small, local farms throughout the North Shore. To our delight, these foods are making their way to catering menus and onto the plates of

your wedding guests. gone is the dreaded stuffed chicken dish that tasted more like a sheet of copy paper presented on a bed of processed scalloped potatoes. instead, chefs are infusing unexpected flavors and farm-fresh ingredients into all of their culinary creations.

Many North Shore caterers can produce a long list of the local farms from which they procure their foods. As Chef Robert Bean of Harborside Catering will tell you, “We are big advocates of locally grown anything. We try to source the majority of our products from local farms whenever we can. The freshness enhances the guest experience, and we are helping keep local agriculture alive.”

The movement toward more locally sourced foods gained significant momentum more than a decade ago in a backlash against genetically engineered foods—foods that could be consistently controlled through chemical processing. “You have no idea where they came from or how they have been handled,” says Bean, who feels the trend toward community is an equally important ingredient in his dishes. “We think that the world has

gotten so caught up in day-to-day business that we have lost our sense of community. However, I do believe we are trying to get back that sense of community. I prefer to support the local farmers of New England who I know are out there working on their farms every day.”

Bean, who has traveled through many kitchens in New England and worked alongside renowned chefs Todd English and Ken Oringer, gets his culinary inspirations from his community. “As chefs, it is our responsibility to source the best possible ingredients to produce the best possible dishes. It is to respect both the ingredient and the farmer who took the time and effort to grow that ingredient. Once we have sourced the ingredient, then comes the respect and care of handling it gently and being able to turn it into something delicious for the diner,” he states.

Some caterers, such as Fireside Catering, owned by the Webber Restaurant Group, source from their own farms and are able to control and anticipate a seasonal schedule. “Local sourcing is the way we do business,” says Maura McCarthy, sales director at Fireside. “We don’t just have access to local foods, we grow them ourselves.”

In 2000, Steve Webber of the Webber Restaurant Group bought Gibbet Hill Farm in Groton in an effort to prevent residential development of the 338-acre farm. Since then he has embedded this commitment in the town of Groton and furthered the philosophy of farm-to-table catering by hiring a farm manager and planting more than three acres of fruits and vegetables that now supply produce to Webber’s restaurants and catering company.

Catering is one of the biggest wedding expenses to consider, yet most couples don’t think about the ingredients of the dishes that will be served or where they came from. It is becoming more common, however, for caterers to offer a tasting before even being hired. We may even begin to see open house events at the farms from which they source their foods. As Chef Bean puts it, “Sending the best possible dish into the dining room is not only how we satisfy our customers, but it is how we satisfy ourselves; it is what allows us to give back to the farmers who have taken care of us, and what allows us to make our mark on the community. It’s what drives us to be better and better every day.”

Compared with the traditional flower bouquet, a brooch bouquet is just

as beautiful years after as it is on your special day. By using your grandmother’s favorite brooch or a stunning gem you discovered while vintage shopping, the bouquet quickly becomes a meaningful keepsake that you will have forever.

As you begin to collect each bauble and brooch, look for shades that will blend well and complement each other. For an overall cohesiveness, make sure each piece shares the same metal tone, such as silver or gold. Choose jewelry pieces that vary in size. This will give your bouquet dimension by filling in each little space and crevasse. Expect to use between fifty and eighty pieces of jewelry, whether they are brooches, earrings, or necklaces. While you want your brooch bouquet to have meaning, don’t use a piece of jewelry that is of extreme value to you. After lasting through your entire wedding day, the bouquet could lose a gem or two. If you don’t have enough pieces of your own sitting around, go out and collect! Around the North Shore, there are countless vintage boutiques, flea markets, and jewelers who carry thousands of options. Each piece will be different in meaning, shape, style, and color and will create your truly treasurable bouquet.

An increasingly popular trend for the creative and crafty bride is the vintage brooch bouquet. Many brides have been spotted carrying this unique gem-covered accessory down the aisle to give their wedding-day ensembles a little more sparkle and shine.

Supplies: To create the fun and fantastic bouquet, you will need:

• 50 to 80 pieces of sparkly gems and brooches

• 2 yards of 5"-wide taffeta ribbon • 3 yards of 3/8"-wide velvet ribbon• 2 stems of artificial hydrangea flowers

• Needle-nose pliers • 22-gauge green florist wire• Light green corsage tape• Hot glue gun • Scissors• Wire cutters

Step One: Wire and wrappingIn order to attach each piece into the bouquet, thread a long strand of wire through the pin or back of each piece of jewelry. Because each gem you use will be different, so will the wiring. Use your judgment. For larger pieces, use a couple of pieces of wire; smaller pieces will only need one. To test this, if you hold onto the wire, the brooch should not droop or wobble. Once the wire is in place, wrap the green corsage tape tightly around the wire. Repeat until each brooch you plan to use in your bouquet is wired and taped. This should create a sturdy “stem” for each one.

Step Two: Assembling the bouquetHolding the bouquet of artificial hydrangeas in one hand, begin to insert the wired and taped jewelry pieces one by one. The hydrangeas (or other flower you choose to use) fill in any holes or gaps your bouquet may have. This will also cover up the wires used to attach the brooches. As you continue to insert each piece, rotate the bouquet to give it a round, smooth shape. Once all the gems are in place, gather all the wire ends together and wrap them tightly with the green corsage tape.

Step Three: The ribbon embellishmentUse the taffeta ribbon to wrap around and cover the green corsage tape. Choose a color that will complement and not overtake your beautiful piece. Use a little hot glue to set it in place. After it dries, wrap the velvet ribbon of a similar color around the bouquet and tie it in a bow at the top of the stems. This will be the perfect finishing touch to your special-day bouquet!

growing up, I wanted to be someone who could make an impact. Singing was out—in fact, when my daughters were babies, Santa left a pitch pipe in my stocking as a not-so-subtle hint that my lullabies were off key. The sight of blood made me woozy, so the entire medical field was out. Being Irish Catholic, I could have scored major points with my family if I had become a nun, but that wasn’t going to happen, either—sorry Nani. But I knew I needed to be a resource for my family and protect them from the evil in the world (in comes the Irish Catholic again). About nine years ago I joined my father and mother-in-law in their wealth management practice and have never looked back. Many things have changed over the course of nearly a decade, but the one thing that hasn’t is my passion for guiding and empowering my clients. Money touches us every day and can cause us happiness or despair. True gratification comes when we realize it does not qualify who we are or make us more or less of a person because we have it or we don’t. The goal is to make better choices today so that, together, we can create the best financial tomorrow.

Discuss your financial styles before marriage — Start your marriage off on the right foot by having an honest discussion about financial habits and objectives. Do you know who you are financially? Is it something you feel good about or is it on your short “fix” list? Would you say that your mate is better at handling money? If so, do you plan on having that person handle the family bills and budget? Do you plan on joining accounts or keeping your current accounts separate? Are you a saver, but your prospective spouse lives paycheck to paycheck? Do you prefer investing heavily in stocks, but your fiancé’s portfolio is filled with bonds? What are each of your short- and long-term financial goals?

Think holistically — Consider each spouse’s investment portfolio as part of a whole. For instance, if both you and your mate contribute to 401(k) plans and IRAs, see how your investment choices match up. Depending on your goals for retirement, one or both of you might want to invest more aggressively. Or you might find that your combined portfolio is more exposed to risk than the two of you can tolerate. Either way, you can rebalance your asset allocation by shifting money from one asset class (stocks, bonds, and money market instruments) to another or by adding new money to the underrepresented asset class.

Review documents — Along with other legal documents, remember to update your beneficiaries on life insurance policies, IRAs, employer-sponsored retirement plans, and pensions. Also, be sure to either create or modify your wills.

Sometimes having an independent third party to help navigate you through the discussion is beneficial. If you find that the discussion stalls or that it evokes negative emotion, then it would be smart to consider using professional help.

Your tomorrows have only just begun, and the financial journey can be smoother if you understand how you complement each other financially.
