Healthy Ways to Banish Belly Fat Belly fat is often considered more of a cosmetic issue

than a health issue. Few people outside of the medical or fi tness communities might know that belly fat is not only unsightly, but unhealthy as well. Excessive belly fat can increase a person's risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and even certain cancers, including breast cancer and colon cancer.

So while many people may want to reduce their belly fat for cosmetic purposes to help them look better and appear more fi t, they can also use improving their overall health as a motivating factor when attempting to trim their waistlines. The benefi ts of blasting belly fat will improve overall health in the long run. The following are a few healthy ways to reduce the unwanted fat.

• Adopt a healthy diet. Belly fat is often the fi rst victim when men and women adopt a healthy diet and begin to lose weight. Researcher Kristen Hairston, MD, an assistant professor of endocrinology and metabolism at Wake Forest School of Medicine, found that people who ate 10 grams of soluble fi ber per day, but made no other changes to their diet built up less fat over time than others. In addition to fi ber-rich foods like almonds and black beans, you should include fruits, vegetables and lean proteins in your diet. These foods will help you feel more full, which will curb your hunger and as a result, reduce your caloric intake.

• Get adequate rest. A good night's sleep, which is at least seven hours each night, has been shown to reduce fat over an extended period of time. Though the exact relationship between sleep and belly fat is unknown, a lack of sleep can force men and women to look to sugary beverages or snacks to provide a boost during the day. Such drinks and snacks can cause weight gain, especially among those people who routinely fail to get a good night's sleep. When you don’t get enough sleep, your body looks to other sources of energy, including these unhealthy treats.

• Get off the couch and exercise. Exercise is another effective way to reduce belly fat. Numerous studies have shown the positive effect that daily, vigorous exercise can have on overall health. For example, a study conducted by researchers at Duke University found that 30 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise, which includes jogging or working out on a cardiovascular machine, such as an elliptical or a treadmill, four times per week can reduce fat and slow down the buildup of fat over time. Those who want to reduce belly fat will likely need to emphasize vigorous exercise. Those hoping to prevent the buildup of belly fat should know that when coupled with a healthy diet, participating in moderate exercise three times per week may be enough to slow down fat buildup. Moderate exercise includes anything that raises your heart rate, such as an exercise class or vigorous bicycle ride.

Prepare a Deck or Patiofor Entertaining

Having a great outdoor space enables a person to host par-ties or intimate gatherings all year. Establishing and maintaining an entertaining space are essential when looking forward to another year of fun in the sun.

Here are a few key tips for readying your yard for entertain-ing possibilities.

• Check for needed repairs. Prior to your fi rst entertaining session, look over the deck or patio to take note of any fl aws that may present safety hazards. Are there any loose railings? Are all screws and nails fl ush so they do not cause tripping? Are there any cracks in concrete or loose patio blocks? Be sure to remedy all of the repairs to ensure guests will be safe. If you are unsure of any structural defi cits, consult with a contractor.

• Hire a reputable contractor. If you are laying the ground-work for a new patio or deck, it is important to get the necessary permits and then hire a person who has been properly vetted. Check qualifi cations and licensing before hiring a contractor; word-of-mouth recommendations from trusted friends and family members are good also. You can double-check qualifi cations by contacting the Better Business Bureau or using a service such as Angie's List to read reviews.

• Think about closing in a portion of a deck or patio. The use of a canopy, netting or even greenery to protect an entertaining space can help minimize weather-related damage to outdoor furniture. Netting will keep biting insects at bay dur-ing warm and humid weather. Having a bit of concealment also means you can create a private space that isn't easily viewed by neighbors or passersby.

• Plan well-defi ned areas. Just as indoor rooms serve dif-ferent purposes, outdoor areas can be separated according to usage. Establish a sitting nook where guests can gather and talk. Have a bar or serving area where refreshments are made and served. Make sure there is a shaded area for when the sun is too hot and similarly, have a sunny area where people can soak up a few rays or dry off after a dip in the spa or pool. Don't forget to establish a spot for kids to play.

• Consider a fi replace or fi re pit. For centuries man (and woman) has gathered around fi re for socialization and a means to warming up. Having a backyard fi replace is a conversa-tion-starter, a decorative focal point and a functional tool to extend the number of seasons in which outdoor entertaining can take place. The fi replace should be placed safely — out of the way of foot traffi c, but central enough so that it can be a gathering point.

• Invest in quality outdoor furniture. Today's yards are extensions of a home's interior. There are many different outdoor sofas and chairs that are as stylish as they are comfortable. These pieces can be matched to the decor inside your home for a cohesive look.

• Accessorize. Don't shy away from hanging artwork on an exterior wall or using urns or pottery to decorate the space. Weather-resistant materials ensure everything from clocks to televisions can be used outdoors. Think about having an entire set of serving dishes and other entertaining items for the outdoors.

When refurbishing outdoor entertaining areas, emphasize comfort, safety and functionality.

Worth Repeating83 Birch Hill Road, Locust Valley(516) 759-5726, worthrepeatinglv.com

Betsy Gibbs has the right idea when it comes to shopping for high-end, luxury items. Her consignment boutique, Worth Repeating, is the result of years of business experience and a love of fashion. Her fi rst business venture, “The Good Lite Lady,” was in commercial and residential lighting, and then she moved on to in-home manicures and pedicures. Gibbs took over her fi rst consignment store, “Eileen’s Closet,” when the owner retired, but closed the store once the building was sold. She volunteered very much in her community after that and then in 2006, Gibbs introduced Worth Repeating to the community.

stains or missing buttons. Everything looks as good as new.“I wanted something different, something that stood out,”

explained Gibbs. “Not only do I carry authentic Gucci, Prada, Fendi and Louis Vuitton, but I also have other designers that are not as high-end, such as Banana Republic. You can buy a shirt from them in my store for $8, because I understand that not everyone who walks in is looking to spend hundreds of dollars.”

The $5 rack is a key component to the wonder and surprise that encompasses Worth Repeating. There are always items available for $5, because if something is not selling quick enough, Gibbs marks down these non-designer items. Cloth-ing and accessories do not last long in this seven-year-old boutique and you are guaranteed to fi nd an array of styles and trends. “All of us at Worth Repeating get so excited, because you never know who or what is going to come through that door,” said Gibbs.

Worth Repeating caters to all kinds of women. The middle-aged woman who wants the status — but also wants to spend less money — marvels at this company. Young women are thrilled that they can purchase authentic items at a decreased price. Even older women who want the quality, but do not want to buy a new designer handbag in this economy, love Worth Repeating.

Gibbs loves educating all of her customers on the art of re-sale and is always learning about new labels and designers herself. “I love what I do! Re-sale should be fun; it’s all about fun,” she stated excitedly. “The customers have fun when they are here, too. Some stay and shop for three hours and if there are people in the store who I know, I will introduce everyone to each other.”

Gibbs has over 2,000 customers who bring her merchan-dise and the loyalty of her customers transcends community lines. “People come from far and wide. One of my custom-ers moved to California and continues to ship me items,” said Gibbs.

The enthusiastic and passionate Worth Repeating owner was recently honored by the Chamber of Commerce at The Annual Gala in 2012. She does many fashion shows at local high schools and donates items to charities, needy families and community churches. She has also been invited to chair the Glen Cove Boys and Girls Club Annual Club Closet Tag Sale on April 13 & 14. Gibbs told her hometown Boys and Girls Club, “I am honored to be doing something that comes very natural to me.”

-Kristin Cacchioli

Worth Repeating welcomes gently used designer labels, as well as labels that are not as luxurious. Customers do not al-ways have use for the handbags, jewelry and accessories in their homes, so they sell it to Gibbs for cash, and so someone else can enjoy using it. Customers are able to purchase great qual-ity shoes, shirts, dresses, prom wear and more for a fraction of the price. Worth Repeating does not accept items with holes,

Many secular traditions have emerged to celebrate Easter, one of the most popular being the coloring of eggs to either decorate the house or hide outside for children to hunt.

Easter egg dyeing kits emerge in early spring, getting children excited to do a fun arts and crafts activity followed by a scavenger hunt. Consumers have a variety of alternatives to these kits at their disposal. There are some people who desire more environmentally friendly Easter eggs, so here are some creative and greener ideas for coloring eggs with your children this year.

Clever Alternatives toTraditional Dyed Easter Eggs

cause as much of a mess when young children inevitably drop a few on the fl oor.

• Consider natural dyes. Use different food items to create all-natural dyes for the eggs. Tea, fruit and vegetable juices — even packaged drink mixes — can be used to tint Easter eggs in various colors. Because you're controlling the materials you use, you can ensure they are safe to use and won’t harm your children’s skin if things get too messy.

• Experiment with paper mache. This ancient paper crafting technique uses recycled paper and a paste to create a hardened mold. Turn excess scraps of paper into delightful eggs put on display for the holiday.

• Purchase corn starch eggs. Corn starch is used in everything from packing materials to children's craft products. Corn starch can be molded into solid forms or foam-type consistencies. Egg kits are sold with this green material. When Easter is over, the corn starch eggs can be put out for composting. Foam-type eggs may be dissolved with water.

• Make edible eggs. Traditional Easter eggs can be wasteful if the eggs are boiled and used entirely for display. Rather, make eggs that will be enjoyed and are not at risk of spoiling too soon after being on display. Gelatin-dessert eggs is one way to use the eggs after Easter and creative people can try crafting eggs out of meringue as well.

• Dough eggs: Have the children get out their favorite modeling dough and craft multi-colored eggs as a fun, rainy-day project. Those who want the eggs to last can purchase actual clay from the craft store or whip up their own medium at home. After drying, the eggs should be ready to paint.

• Drained eggs: Those interested in using the yolks and albumen from the eggs for cooking can poke small holes into the eggs and drain them. Then the remaining eggshells can be decorated and put on display.

Cirella’s Restaurant & Bar 4 Broadhollow Road, Melville(631) 385- 7380, cirellasrestaurant.com

Cirella's Restaurant & Bar has been a reliable mainstay in the Huntington area for over 25 years. It's a great eatery for family occasions and business functions, as well, serving large portions of delicious Italian favorites. My wife and I recently chose to make a return visit for a quiet date night. There was a time when the acoustics posed a problem at Cirella's and romantic dining was not easy, but to our delight, they have installed sound absorbers and a quiet, intimate meal awaited us.

the couple next to us was dining on sushi! Isn’t this an Italian restaurant? Our server explained that since sushi is served in Cirella's at Saks Fifth Avenue in the Walt Whitman Mall, they have had many requests to add it to the larger restaurant's menu — and so they have.

My evening started with Frutti Di Mare — a nice presentation of shrimp, scallops, scungilli and calamari. It was the perfect appetizer, which I was able to enjoy on my own, since my wife preferred to start with the Paese Salad. Served in a small or large portion, this salad was fi lled with mesculin greens, candied walnuts, cranberries, apples and gorgonzola cheese — very fresh and topped with light honey mustard; she loved it.

The perfectly-seasoned Chicken Marsala was served steaming hot. I added the Lasagna, just for tasting, and was pleased with both dishes. My wife chose to be a little more adventurous than usual and ordered the pasta with chicken in a light pink sauce. Though she couldn’t fi nish it, we were both delighted knowing that our next night’s dinner would be enjoyable, too.

Many great choices fi ll the menu at Cirella’s. Aside from the selection of hot and cold Antipasti dishes, they feature a wide selection of soups, salads, chicken dishes, fi sh entrees, steak courses and even Abizza — thin crust pizzas. Both large and small pasta dishes are available to accommodate large and small gatherings. They also serve children’s portions, although it is not my favorite place to take little ones. An accommodating staff helped us with our dinner selections and served the meal slowly, so we never felt rushed and were given time to talk between courses. With that in mind, we felt no guilt ordering desserts — at least I didn’t. We both ordered a cappuccino, and I have no willpower when it comes to cheesecake — especially the American kind. Rich and creamy, it was the perfect fi nish.

Cirella’s Restaurant is well known not only for dining, but for catering private parties, as well. They are available for “On-Premise” and “Off-Premise” get-togethers for 25-500 people or more — offering services from preparation to clean up. Just imagine how special we felt when Cirella’s catered our private, In-Restaurant dinner for two! They are open weekdays for lunch and every night for dinner.

-Randy Gordon

The bar was active and the dining room was full, but our reservation was honored promptly. We each had a glass of wine, as our attentive waitress delivered an absolutely delicious basket of garlic bread that needed to be quickly replenished.

We looked to our left and were a little surprised that

Dicken’s assistance when their computers inevitably needed maintenance. After continually being told how adept he was at dealing with computer problems, Dicken fi nally decided to turn his talent into a business. Since 1984, Compstar has been serving community businesses and homeowners when they need help with technology. He offers all different services, from networking to software troubleshooting. Compstar specializes primarily with local medical, dental and attorney practices. Homeowners are offered training and tutorials on how to better understand their computer and get the most use out of it. Dicken demonstrates different types of set-ups, from diffi cult concepts to simple things, such as e-mail or Internet access. Although he is completely self-taught, learning from his mistakes and fi nding the best possible route to solve any computer problem, Dicken became Microsoft Certifi ed and is completely licensed in his trade. Most of his business initially came from recommendations; his clients are always satisfi ed with his work. Compstar is a small, local business and Dicken enjoys servicing those in his community. This prompt, professional computer consulting service has satisfi ed clients for almost thirty years and will continue to do so for a long time. 14 Dock Lane, Port Washington (516) 883-3669.
