Celebrating 19th year of Promoting Excellence in EducationWhen North South Foundation (NSF) was established in 1989, our vision was to eliminate money as a barrier for advancement, especially for children who have demonstrated academic excellence. Consistent with this vision, the Foundation began providing college scholarships in India for those who excel among the poor. In contrast, in the US, the Foundation began encouraging academic excellence among the children of Indian-American community through educational contests such as the spelling bee, since 1993. Over the years new contests have been added, which now include vocabulary, math, geography, essay writing, public speaking and brain bee.

The Foundation has come a long way during the last 19 years. The following table provides some statistical highlights:

It is gratifying to know that NSF has been able to serve thousands of talented children both in India and North America. The credit goes to the thousands of dedicated volunteers, donors, and parents. We are grateful to all of them.

We are getting queries to start educational contests in India. We had embarked on a pilot spelling bee contest in Orissa for the last four years. There was also a pilot spelling bee workshop in Andhra Pradesh during 2006. We are looking for volunteers to administer contests in India. If you are or someone you know is interested, please send an e-mail to [email protected]. We see this as a great opportunity to improve the educational skills of children in India.

In closing we wish to thank all stakeholders including donors, parents, volunteers, well wishers, and beneficiaries.

- National Team, North South Foundation

North South Foundation is a non-profit organization established in Illinois in 1989. It received tax-exempt status under the IRS Section 501(c)(3). Our Mission is to promote excellence in human endeavor, to develop human resources, to help people achieve success regardless of religion, gender, caste, geographic origin by giving hope to those who may have none. The Foundation is all-volunteer driven. While organizing events, we strive to get discounts from our vendors and sponsorships for our awards. These measures keep our expenses down and channel donated funds more towards helping the needy. Our overhead is five percent or less.

The Scholarship program in India is designed to encourage excellence among the poor. It is targeted at qualified, needy students entering college. Over 3,500 scholarships have been awarded to date. Our plan calls for 500 scholarships this year. Each scholarship is $250 per student per year. Awards are made following strict selection criteria based on merit and need. Students are selected from 17 centers in India: Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhavnagar, Bhubaneswar, Kochi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Jamshedpur, Jodhpur, Kanpur, Katihar, Kolkata, Mau, Madurai, Pune, Sibsagar and Trivandrum. These centers are run by dedicated volunteers who are committed to the noble cause of helping the poor who excel at academics attend college. Please contact us if you can help us start

chapters in other states.

Educational contests in the US are designed to encourage academic excellence among Indian American children. The spelling, vocabulary, math, essay writing, public speaking and geography bees are conducted annually in two steps. Children initially participate in more than 60 centers in the US. Top rankers based on these scores are invited for the national finals. National top three rankers are warded scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $250, redeemable in the winners’ freshman year of college. Brain bee is conducted only at the national level. Please contact us if you would like to open a chapter in your area.

Accomplishments of NSF Children: Many NSF children have scored top ranks in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, National Geographic Bee and MATHCOUNTS. Top colleges in the US have accepted numerous NSF children. More importantly, these contests help children improve their communication skills, self-confidence and empower them to become better citizens for tomorrow.

Role Model Award: The Foundation has awarded its inaugural Role Model Award, ‘Vishwa Jyothi’ to Rajiv Vinnakota in 2003 and Nipun Mehta in 2004. It helps to showcase human values and academic excellence to the children of Indian American community.

For further information, please contact Dr. Ratnam Chitturi at 630-323-1966 or [email protected]

The year 2007 saw following notable accomplishments.- NSF had 2 new chapter opened dur-ing 2007; Antelope Valley, CA; Des Moines, IA. - Former NSF participant and last year’s National Brain Bee champion, Sanat Sethi was placed second in the Interna-tional Brain Bee held at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.- Suneil Iyer, the 2006 NSF National Geography Champion, was the runner-up in the 2007 National Geographic Bee contest held at Washington, DC. Sunil received a $15,000 college schol-arship.- The last three years have seen tremen-dous growth in the academic contests held by NSF in 61 regional centers. We’re thrilled to report that over 7,500 contestants registered in the various categories this year. Of these, Detroit, MI, had the highest registration at 467, followed by Princeton, NJ, at 337. The Junior Spelling Bee continued to attract the most contestants in a single contest as it had 1582 contestants countrywide. The Math Bee contest at various levels attracted a record 2,900 contestants in 2007 and had the most number of con-testants. We are indebted to all the new and existing regional coordinators and volunteers who worked hard to make the regional contests successful- Fees from the registrations this year will be able to fund 562 scholarships to poor and meritorious students in 17 chapters throughout India in 2007-08.- Following last year’s successful Na-tional Final pilot of Senior Geography Bee, Junior Geography was introduced in the national final for the first time during 2007.

- The National Championship Finals were conducted at Ohio State Uni-versity, Columbus, OH during August 25th-26th with a record attendance of 960 contestants. - We are grateful to Dr. Ravindranath Kambhampati for sponsoring all three prizes for six contests by instituting the ‘Dr Janaki Kambhampati Memo-rial Award’ in memory of his wife. We are also grateful to Siva and Mallika Kambhampati for sponsoring two first place awards. We are thankful to Dr. Pundaleeka Sarode, Dr. Sanjiv Modi, Hexco, EzMathTrix, and TANA for re-newing their commitments this year.- NSF started a green initiative at the 2007 National Finals. The objective is to promote Green Bees. This year, the objective was to save on plastic water bottles and kids/parents were asked to bring their own water bottles.- The regional centers of Atlanta, Port-land, Dallas, Hartford, Stamford, Ra-leigh, Columbus, Cambridge, San An-tonio and Palo Alto held Spelling and Math Bee workshops in 2007. The Bee Workshops are designed to encourage and prepare children to take part in NSF and other similar contests.- The CT and Chicago centers held their annual Walk-a-thons/tennis tour-nament to raise funds towards schol-arships in India. The MA chapter in-troduced an unique idea of making the parents as contestants in a Fund-Bee event modeled after a popular TV show. This hugely successful event raised $5500 for 20 scholarships.- Rekha Sambamurthy was instrumen-tal in starting to give out Michigan Community Service Awards (CSA) in Lansing to kids who demonstrated

a zeal and passion for community ser-vice. Bhavana Singichetti a senior and Priya Karve a junior were presented the awards for outstanding achievements in Community Service. Bhavana vol-unteers at Sparrow Hospital Lansing and Priya has been responsible for in-troducing innovative ways of imparting Indian culture to the kids in Bal Vihar at the local Hindu temple. In the Junior level Netra and Anushka Murthy were recognized for their efforts in raising funds for NSF scholarships in the year 2006.- Samita Mohanasundaram, the Nation-al Public Speaking Champion received the Volvo For Life Award. She has taught impoverished village children in India; sold Make-A-Wish angels in Nashua, New Hampshire, and donated over 12,000 books to places in need around the world.- The Dollar-A-Square (DAS) pro-gram which empowers children in US to help raise funds for scholarships for poor children in India has had a great amount off success as a total of $2152 was raised by 21 kids as of November 2007. Continuing on with the tradition from past years, 15 children and con-testants who had participated in North South Foundation’s Dollar-A-Square (DAS) program were recognized at the National Finals by Madavi Nathan Oli-ver, the director of the DAS program.

Matching Gifts: There are many com-panies that encourage giving for educa-tion by matching a dollar for a dollar gift to their employee contributions. This is a nice way to double your contributions to the Foundation. Please find out if your employer does this. The Founda-tion has received matching funds from

several well-known companies includ-ing BP, Cisco, Compuware, Dun & Broad St, Fleet Boston, Monsanto, Na-tional Semiconductor, Omgeo, Oracle, Pitney Bowes, Pfizer, Reader’s Digest, Reebok, Sun Micro Systems, Sympho-ny Corporation, Tudor Investment, and Verizon. In addition the Foundation is grateful to all the corporate employees contributing to United Way who have designated their company’s matching gift for North South Foundation schol-arships. For further information, please call 630-323-1966. Volunteers: The Foundation is look-ing for volunteers in many areas of its endeavors. The success of any public foundation depends on its volunteers. It is the collective efforts of volunteers that made this Foundation what it is today. Volunteerism is like an elastic band. You only need to spare as little as you can afford or extend as much as you love to contribute. You will get the satisfaction of promoting excellence in education among the most impov-erished in India and children in our community in the US. Some corpora-tions also encourage their employees to become volunteers by providing fi-nancial contribution. The Foundation received such contributions from All-state, HSBC and Pfizer.

Educational Contests in the US: The expenses for conducting the contests are covered by registration fees and local collections. The scholarships for the National Champions are covered by contributions from individuals, non-profit organizations, and excess funds remaining from the registration fees.

This is a question often asked by many potential donors. They want to know that their hard-earned money is help-ing the most deserving pupil, not just any deserving. They know the need is there everywhere. They also know that everyone can’t be helped because of limited resources. So they want their contribution go to the very best.

NSF currently has seventeen centers for giving scholarships in India. The contact information is provided at the end of this booklet. Here is a brief syn-opsis of the entire process at a typical center.

Get Ready: Each center monitors their local Common Entrance Test (CET) schedules. Shortly after the examina-tions have taken place, the local NSF center (or the NSF USA at the request of the local center) prepares a formal press release (announcement) about the scholarship program for the upcoming academic year. Go to Press: The aim is to get the word out to all eligible students. The an-nouncement is sent to all local newspa-pers, and other media including TV and radio. The content is disseminated both in English and in the local language. The media does this free of charge as a community service. This announce-ment normally is made between June and August to coincide with the exami-nation results. All eligible students are encouraged to write to the local center for application forms. Students have two to four weeks to send in their ap-plications, along with their academic scores and documents on their financial

status.

Form a Selection Committee: While the applications are being received, a Selection Committee gets established. Selecting the right people to be on this Committee is one of the most crucial elements in the process. Committee members within each center are select-ed based on their credentials and re-spect in the community. Usually three to five members are appointed based on their respective integrity, honesty, character, trust, and reputation.

Selection Process: The Selection Com-mittee screens all applications based on academic qualifications first, and on the financial need second. To be eligible, a student must score among the top five percent, which is relaxed to ten percent in the case of rural and girl students. The annual family income should not exceed Rs. 40,000 in urban areas and Rs. 28,000 in rural area. As NSF is the last resort for providing financial assis-tance to a needy student, those who are eligible for other scholarships or finan-cial aid are not eligible for NSF aid. Of those eligible, a short list of the most deserving candidates is made for an in-person interview. Each student and a parent are interviewed and verifica-tions are made as to the genuineness of their application. Candidates are reim-bursed for one-way travel to the local NSF center. The interview process and the verification process are quite exten-sive, as every effort is made to be sure the aid is going to the most-needy and deserving among the poor.Communication with Central Office and NSF USA: After a center finalizes

its choice of candidates, the informa-tion is sent to the national coordina-tor. Here, the list is further verified to ensure the norms are being uniformly implemented across all centers, and the information is in turn relayed to NSF USA. Following the confirmation of the finalists, funds are disbursed to the selected candidates. Return receipts for the funds received by the students are sent back to the central office. Finally, an award ceremony is often scheduled where the press is invited. This not only helps the student in being recog-nized, but also makes more people be-come aware of NSF.

Renewals: The student must maintain high academic standards for the schol-arship to be renewed for each year of

study. The scholarships currently cover 100% of tuition fee in most states. The student and family are expected to cov-er the remaining costs either through their own funds or other scholarships.

NSF is growing every year. The aver-age award is about $250 per student per year. In order to establish a new NSF center, it is necessary to be able to sup-port 10 scholarships. Therefore, if the award is given for four years, then at least $10,000 per year is needed to es-tablish and maintain a new center.

In a nutshell this is the entire NSF scholarship process. The Foundation welcomes any new ideas or thoughts for improving this process.

Mission:Encourage academic excellence among the poor in India.Criteria:1. Scholarships are offered in the pro-fessional fields such as engineering, medicine, agriculture and polytechnics (3-year diploma.)2. NSF scholarship awards are made regardless of caste, creed, gender, religion or region. 3. Merit: Top 5% in Common En-trance Tests or minimum of 95% of the top ranking score in Intermediate or equivalent exams with relaxation of 5% to rural and girl students.4. Need: The applicant has to demon-strate that he or she cannot continue the desired course without the NSF Scholarship. Objective is to help pre-vent dropouts among those who excel.

5. Income Limit: poor is defined as any family that earns less than Rs. 40,000 per annum in urban areas and Rs. 28,000 per annum in rural areas.6. The student must pursue the desired course in a government college or in a private college that has government fee structure. The student must have come through government or govern-ment aided schools.7. Rank of first attempt and first year students are preferred.8. Applicants who are eligible for oth-er scholarships or aid are not eligible.9. Short listed candidates will be interviewed for final selection; prefer-ence is given to rural and girl students among those eligible.10. Renewals require continued dem-onstration of superior performance, conduct, and need.

I still vividly remember my first expo-sure to North South Foundation (NSF) as a nervous 6th grader participating in the regional vocabulary competition. Even though I did not understand then the importance of learning hundreds of vocabulary words, today, I truly appre-ciate its value as a junior at East Lyme High School (ELHS). It is fascinating to see that students both in America and India are benefiting because of the brilliant vision of the NSF Founder Dr. Ratnam Chitturi. When I attended the NSF’s national competition in Chicago, I was inspired by the NSF’s charity work. On the way back I kept thinking about how I can help NSF. After doing a lot of brainstorm-ing, I came up with an idea of arranging a music concert for the fundraiser. My Indian clas-sical music guru, Dr. Stan Scott, is an expert at singing Bhajans. I asked Dr. Scott about doing a Bhajan concert to raise funds for NSF and he agreed immediately. The important areas to consider when arranging a fundraiser of this type in-clude advertising, the rental hall, the sound system, and refreshments. The main challenge was to get a hall with-out paying the regular charges of about $300. My mom and I called many local churches and libraries. Finally, I talked to East Lyme High School and was thrilled to find out that the ELHS au-ditorium charges only $25 for a charity

event. Because they have a brand new sound system we saved up to $300. My brother Raj and his two friends managed the sound system. I wrote an article in the NSF newsletter titled “Music Knows No Boundaries” to inform people about Dr. Scott and to advertise the concert fundraiser. We sent the flyer to about 200 families who attend the local Diwali function. I also sent the flyer to the local newspapers. My mom also helped me make a lot of phone calls. Mr. Raghavendra Paturi was a great help in arranging snacks from Taj of India. On the day of the concert, my friends and I collected the ticket money at the door. I was thrilled to see the ELHS auditorium filled with more than 150 guests. I welcomed the audience and

i n t r o d u c e d Dr. Scott. Dr. Samit Bhat-tacharya made a brief presenta-tion about NSF. My brother Raj, who had a per-

fect score on his SAT’s, was a fitting candidate to tell people how NSF has been a major factor in his success. Dr. Scott’s insightful commentary before each Bhajan and his melodious singing captivated the audience. The NSF fundraiser in Feb 2006 suc-cessfully raised about $4000. Addi-tionally, the event exposed many peo-ple to the Indian classical music for the first time. While it was a lot of work for the preceding two months, it was a great experience for me, and I learnt a lot from arranging this fundraiser.

Over one sixth of the world’s popula-tion lives in extreme poverty, thirty-thousand children die from treatable illnesses every day, and the wealth of the three richest people in the world is more than the GDP of the 48 poorest nations.

These figures are astonishing, bewil-dering, and outrageous.

With thousands of people suffering around the world, I knew I had to fol-low Gandhiji’s words and be the change I wished to see..I worked closely with non-profit organizations such as the Make-A-Wish foundation (which grants wishes to terminally ill chil-dren), and contributed to fundraisers, card programs, and Christmas events. Over the years, I formed a close-knit friendship with the residents at local nursing and retirement homes by shar-ing with them music, instruments, and dance.. For years, I have supported var-ious “Green Clubs” in their recycling endeavors, tutored pupils, worked with the elderly, and inspired my friends and family to join community service. I believe that together, we can make a difference. See where you can make a

difference - join a non profit organiza-tion, set up a lemonade stand, donate to your local soup kitchen, or even start a penny drive. In fact, you can also participate in America’s biggest volunteer day. Make A Difference Day is a national day dedicated to help-ing others who are less fortunate. On the fourth Saturday in October, good will and good heart brings individu-als across the country to participate in various community service projects ev-ery year. Schools, students, and Ameri-cans around the world hold hands to elevate others out of poverty. Last year, a Captain in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers gathered over fifty volun-teers to help clear trash and debris on the streets of Iraq, and hospitals volun-teered to give free physical check-ups for the poor. The motivation for North South Foun-dation is truly universal: to help change lives. As the students of today and the leaders of tomorrow, we must join to-gether to change the world for us all!universal: to help change lives. As the students of today and the leaders of tomorrow, we must join together to change the world for us all!

Dollar–A–Square Fundraising - For the Children By the Children

The Dollar-A-Square (DAS) is a fund raising program “for the children by the children”. DAS, which was started in 2003, is now in its 4th year. Children as young as three years have been col-lecting donations to help children in India attend school. This year alone 21 kids raised $2552 (10 scholarships) through this program. Every child is encouraged to join this great team!

What is DAS? Each child gets a pledge sheet with 100 squares and each square is worth one dollar. The children fill one square for every dollar they raise. By going around the neighborhood and asking friends and other parents, children can easily fill in the squares. One complete sheet is $100 that pro-vides nearly half of a scholarship. For those children who complete one sheet, NSF offers free access to an on-line educational game. It is something educational and fun; but most of all it develops a giving heart in your child.

Why they did it and how they did it? Children do it to help kids like them-selves in India through various ways. This helps them discover compassion in themselves. It also makes them feel good, knowing that being children does not prevent them from making a posi-tive impact on the society. Many kids give up their pocket money, and tooth

fairy money to fill the squares. Some ask for donations in lieu of birthday gifts. Some others collect cans and conserve nature while helping another child!

Here’s an extract from one of the kids who wrote to Dr. Chitturi, the founder of NSF:“I collected this amount on my birth-day by providing an option to the guests to contribute to DAS in lieu of gifts. I am glad that I am able to con-tribute towards scholarships for needy students in India. I intend to continue to be involved in the DAS program and other fund raising activities con-ducted by NSF. I am very thankful to NSF for providing me with an oppor-tunity to participate in this program.”

How to begin? Give a DAS pledge sheet to your children and talk to them about DAS. You can start off their col-lection by giving them some money and checking off the squares on the pledge sheet. Soon they would be full. Two pledge sheets gets you access to both spelling and vocabulary games. By just adding another half you can help a poor child in India go to college for one year.Learn more about DAS on http://www.northsouth.org/dollarasquare.asp.

As we raise our kids to seek excellence in their academic endeavors, it is im-portant for us to remember that seeking to be an excellent human being should be the primary goal of every kid and parent. One of the most satisfying, fun, and productive ways to achieve this goal is volunteering for community service projects such as North South Foundation. If a child begins community service at an early age, it can become part of a child’s life. It teaches them to be re-sponsible for themselves and for the entire community. It makes them real-ize that there are areas in life that are bigger than themselves. A wonderful, empowering message from community service for a child is that he or she is important enough to have an impact on someone or something else. Learning to work in a team, taking on leadership roles, setting project goals - these are all skills that can be gained by volun-teering and will serve a child well in any future career. Above all, the sat-isfaction of learning these skills and achieving the goals is itself rewarding. This year we started the tradition of an-nouncing a Community Service Award at the Lansing Chapter of North South Foundation. The awards were given in two categories, Senior (for High School kids) and Junior (for elemen-tary and middle school kids). Bhavna Singichetti, a senior at Okemos High School, and Priya Karve, a sophomore at the same school, were recognized for their outstanding record in Com-munity Service. Bhavna has also won the Okemos Kiwanis Club award for

her outstanding achievements in Com-munity Service. She has been an ac-tive volunteer at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing and raised funds successfully for the Tsunami victims in India and for the Greater Lansing Food Bank in Michigan. Priya Karve participates en-thusiastically in projects initiated at her school and has also come up with inno-vative ways of imparting Indian culture to kids at Balvihar, Lansing. In the junior category Netra and Anush-ka Murthy were recognized for their ef-forts at fundraising for Dollar a Square (DAS) and for their service in their school’s Community Service program. Netra volunteers as a teacher’s assistant in the Special education classroom for kids with developmental disabilities. The Community Service program at Lansing has grown since the announce-ment of the awards. Some of the projects that our kids are currently involved with are:• A donation drive to collect fall and winter clothing for the needy• Fundraising for feeding the hungry and homeless at the Greater Lansing Food Bank• Participating in a mentoring and tutoring program for the under-privileged kids from the Boys and Girls Club of Lansing. We hope to see other chapters of North South Foundation implement the Com-munity Service Program in the coming years. ”Be the change you wish to see in the world.” This has been our mot-to. So let us start being that change, a chapter at a time!

Fundraising EventsNorth South Foundation (NSF) has al-ready given the gift of education to 400 under-privileged children in India this year through you - the donors - who do-nated generously throughout the year, including at the following fundraising events. Hamden, CT - Sunday, Jul 22, 2007 The eighth annual walk/bike-a-thon held in Hamden, Connecticut raised $2,200.In addition to the walk/bike-a-thon, we organized a tennis tournament for adults and children and the popular volleyball. The emphasis continues to be youth leadership, intended mainly for high school children, who received a certifi-cate of participation from distinguished guests. A visiting NSF-India represen-tative discussed the process of select-ing needy students for scholarships in India. Youth also heard from previous year participants, on their experience with NSF educational contests and youth leadership activities.Burr Ridge, IL – Sept 23, 2007Perfect weather, eager volunteers, par-ticipating donor families and sponsors participated in the 17th Annual NSF Chicago Walkathon to raise 50 college scholarships (each worth $250). This year, we took a novel team ap-proach to infuse excitement and in-crease participation among the young and the old while defining leadership positions for the youth. Throughout the day, our youth Team Leaders on the Blue Team and the Red Team actively recruited team members who, in turn, persuaded everyone to participate and earn points by taking part in any of the day’s events i.e. walk/bike/skate or run in the tracks; play Chess or Volleyball

or Basketball or Tennis. The local Kid-zburg team sponsored fun events for children aged 2-10.The DAS booth displayed names of kids who successfully raised $100 or more over weeks or months, a dollar at a time. The day ended with an Awards Cer-emony where we awarded Certificates of Appreciation and Letters of Volun-teer Service to our Youth Volunteers.First Annual NSF-Massachusetts FunD-Bee: This year, NSF-MA chap-ter came up with a unique idea of making the parents as contestants in a Fund-Bee event modeled after the pop-ular TV show, “Are you smarter than the 5th grader”. The event named “Are you smarter than the NSF kid!” was held on October 27, 2007 on a typical New England Fall day at the Parker Damon Cafeteria, in Acton, MA. The event featured parents, NSF cham-pions and other children in teams of three in spelling, vocabulary, Geogra-phy and Math Bee. Regional winners of all levels were invited to be lifelines. Smitha Gundavajhala, a 12 year old from Cupertino, CA, who is on the school journalism team produc-ing the school newspaper, won the 1 st rank in the Senior Spelling Bee (grade 4-8). The champion speller of the NSF na-tional senior spelling bee this year, Smitha Gundavajhala said,” It was very tough since everyone was really good. But I am really very happy I could make it.” She was actually get-ting ready for a homemade “Schnecke” from her mom Sudha, since that was her championship winning word. “My parents encouraged me a lot”, said Priyanka Nadar, who won the second place in SSB. She has also participated in the Scripps National spelling bee. But this is her first year in the NSF fi-nals. Anupa Murali of Concord, NH, who won the 1st place in Math bee level 3 said,” My parents are my role models. was held at Ohio State University, Co-lumbus, OH with local volunteers, Mr. Bhaskara Rudraraju, Mr. Gangadhar Tumu, Chandrasekhara Rayala and Professor Unnava Rao taking a lead in spearheading the mammoth gather-ing. Over 900 finalists from over 7500 regional contestants at sixty five North South Foundation centers throughout the US participated in the event and this is the largest finals in NSF so far. Winners and top scorers from these regional contests are invited to the National Final. in volunteering in her own community of Nashua, New Hampshire. The pub-lic speaking contest, in its second year encourages students to enrich their communication skills.

This is the 8th year for North South Foundation’s Brain Bee, a neuroscience contest. Rajiv Tarigopula, a ninth-grad-er from St. Louis, MO won this year’s Brain Bee Championship. Rajiv will be invited to the 2008 National Brain Bee conducted by Prof. Norbert Myslinski of the University of Maryland, Balti-more, MD in March 2008. Rajiv is a past North South Foundation Spelling and Vocabulary champion and finished 4 th in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. This year’s Brain Bee contest was conducted by Sanat Sethi, last year’s North South Foundation champion who won the 2nd place in the Interna-

tional Brain Bee championships earlier this year along with Dr. James Olson and Dr. Randy Nelson, neuroscience professors at Ohio State University.

“All of us do not have equal talent, but all of us should have an equal opportu-nity to develop our talent”, said John F.Kennedy. NSF educational contests gives an equal opportunity for the Indi-an kids all over the country to improve their minds, enabling them to think, question, improve their spelling, vocab-ularies and learn concepts which would help them all through their lives. The purpose of this organization is “to cre-ate more opportunities for educational prospects not only to the Indian chil-dren in USA but also to help the needy students in India,” said Dr.Hanumantha Rao Unnava, a coordinator of the NSF finals team.
