The North Sydney CBD is of state, national and international economic importance. In the 14/15 financial year, the centre and surrounding area generated a Gross Regional Product of $16.14 billion and accounted for 2.5% of employment in NSW.

As part of the global economic corridor, it’s connected to a unique cluster of diverse, globally competitive industries with international reach. The area has a high concentration of knowledge-based service industries, with strong employment growth in the financial and technical services sectors.

The largest employing industries are:

Not surprisingly, our workforce is young and highly educated, with 54% holding a Bachelors degree or higher. Six in 10 workers are professionals or managers and people who work here earn more, on average, than their colleagues in other areas.

North Sydney ranks second in the global competitive index for Sydney, based on industries, occupations, and worker qualifications and income.

So when you make North Sydney your base, you join a diverse CBD with a smart workforce and a strong economic future.

NORTH SYDNEY

Everything at your doorstep

North Sydney offers everything your organisation and staff need to do business well. The centre has excellent transport and telecommunications infrastructure and a good retail offering with two supermarkets, specialty stores and more on the way. There is a wide range of eateries including restaurants, cafes and food courts. The emerging night-time economy is supported by a mix of modern and iconic bars and pubs.

North Sydney has two four-star hotels – the Harbourview and Rydges – with another hotel due to open in 2017. There are also several boutique hotels and serviced apartments so the centre is well serviced for corporate guests. The Harbourview and Rydges both offer conference facilities and there are unique meeting and event rooms in the North Sydney Function Centre at North Sydney Oval.

In or close to the centre, there are 49 childcare services, 11 primary schools, 10 secondary schools and three tertiary institutions including the Australian Catholic University. The CBD has several 24/7 gyms and is close to three beautiful parks where workers regularly walk, run or join organised sport. The North Sydney Olympic Pool, located on the harbour foreshore, is just a 15 minute walk from the CBD.

Other cultural venues in close proximity include the Ensemble Theatre in Kirribilli, Luna Park at Milsons Point and Mary MacKillop Place, home of Australia’s first saint. The Kirribilli, Neutral Bay, Crows Nest and McMahons Point shopping villages are all within walking distance of the centre and are popular destinations for special events.

Our difference is our

lifestyle. North Sydney is relaxed and friendly, offering a unique work-life balance you won’t

find everywhere else.NORTH SYDNEY

We’re well connectedThe centre has excellent public transport connections, with a modern train station on the north shore line. There are convenient bus connections to the city, north shore, north west and northern beaches and the centre is connected to major arterial roads including the Warringah Freeway and Pacific Highway. North Sydney is just five minutes by train or taxi from the Sydney CBD and 25 minutes from the airport.

There will be even more transport connections when the new metro station is completed. The NSW Government has announced an underground station will be built for the new metro line in the heart of North Sydney. The metro station will be located on the corner of Berry and Miller Streets, and will bring additional commercial and retail space to the centre. Work is expected to begin in 2017, with the metro becoming operational in 2024.

Building the futureWhen the MLC building on Miller St, North Sydney was opened in 1957, it was the largest commercial office building in Australia. Other commercial buildings quickly surrounded it and North Sydney became established as an important commercial centre. Today it has more than 800,000 square metres of commercial floor space in a mix of grades.

This means the centre attracts many different businesses, from international corporations seeking premium space through to start ups wanting lower grade space in a dynamic centre.

Over the past decade there has been a renewing of the centre, with innovative new buildings at 100 Pacific Highway (22,000 sq m), Innovation Place, 100 Arthur St (26,300 sq m) and Coca Cola Place, 40 Mount St (28,500 sq m).

The centre is continuing to grow, with three major commercial buildings under construction in the centre of the CBD and five mixed-use developments under construction around its fringe.

■177 Pacific Highway nearing completion - the new 30 level building will offer A grade space and an exciting ground floor retail area with garden plaza. 177pacific.com.au

■100 Miller St under construction - the new tower will house a hotel as well as a restaurant and retail area with an eat street and speciality stores. cromwell.com.au

■90-100 Mount St under construction - the new commercial tower will include a public plaza and retail area. 100mountstreet.com.au

We recognise that areas of our CBD have their own character and Council’s strategic planning embraces and supports this.

Living Campus To the west of the CBD is our education precinct, which incorporates three significant educational institutions – the Australian Catholic University, Sydney Church of England Grammar School (Shore) and the North Sydney Demonstration School.

Our plan for this area is to create a Living Campus that will be a safe and engaging place for students, residents and workers, with more formal and informal places for people to study or gather. We’re encouraging active edges to buildings with outdoor dining, activations and events, as well as green walls, low level lighting and public art to soften the streetscape.

Ward St PrecinctCouncil is developing a masterplan to guide future development within the Ward Street precinct. We’re identifying opportunities for commercial and mixed use growth and looking at how the redevelopment of the Ward and Harnett Street car parks can provide community benefits. The masterplan is expected to be complete by late 2016.

Around the edge of the CBD five mixed-use buildings are being constructed.

The new buildings will add residential, office and retail space and bring thousands of new residents and workers to the centre, adding to its vibrancy and driving the retail and night-time economy.

More than a CBD Civic Precinct

To the north of the centre, the Civic Precinct incorporates Civic

Park, the North Sydney Community Centre, Stanton Library and the iconic St Leonards Park. Just 10 minutes walk

from the centre of the CBD, this precinct offers a sanctuary from the bustle of

the commercial heart. Perfect for walking, reading, thinking or

soaking up some winter sun!

Spaces for people

North Sydney Council is supporting growth in the CBD with a progressive public domain program. We’re upgrading the look and feel of public spaces with contemporary paving and street furniture and improving the pedestrian network to help people move through the centre more easily.

The new look features granite pavers and kerb and guttering, multi-purpose light poles and modern seating. We’ve upgraded Berry St and a section of Walker St, between Berry and the Pacific Highway.

Our next public domain project is Brett Whiteley Place. As the central area of public space within North Sydney, Brett Whiteley Place is being upgraded to create a cultural and arts hub. The new plaza will provide an attractive lunchtime destination, host regular events and contribute to the night-time economy.

The plaza has been named after Brett Whiteley, one of Australia’s most significant modern artists who lived for many years in nearby Lavender Bay. The plaza will have an arts focus and be part of the North Sydney Public Art Trail. The upgrade will include the adjacent Elizabeth Plaza and the pedestrian realm will be extended with new shared zones in Denison and Mount Streets.

As well as the popular MLC grass, the Greenwood rooftop and St Peters Park,

North Sydney has some magical spaces off the beaten track,

including Don Bank Museum, the pocket park behind 100 Pacific

Highway and Clark Park. Go on – explore!

Take the art trail

Art is an integral part of our vision for North Sydney. There are significant sculptures, paintings and installations in buildings and campuses in the centre, as well as street artworks installed by Council.

People interested in

exploring the art of

North Sydney can

follow our public art

trail which includes

more than 20 artworks

by prominent and

emerging artists.

The trail travels

from the CBD down

to the harbour and is

available as an app.

Two large-scale, site-specific sculptures commissioned in 2015 are Missing Corners by Daniel Templeman, which is located on the corner of Pacific Highway and Blue and Walker Streets; and Angles of Incidence by Warren Langley and Julia Davis, located on the corner of Pacific Highway and Miller Street.

The NTH SYD Happiness Works Here initiative is a vibrant program of weekly events that bring a smile to people’s faces. The program incorporates something for everyone, from live music and street performers, through to quirky events such as slot car racing and visits from baby animals.

Because we’re the work life balance CBD, there’s always healthy options in the mix, including free yoga and running events, health talks and opportunities to blend your own fruit smoothy by cycle.

While many of the events are held in Brett Whiteley Place in the heart of the CBD, Council partners with local businesses and property owners to extend the events on offer and ensure they are spread around the centre.
