Before And After CampBefore and After Camps provide a fun and safe experience for campers who need to arrive before 9:00 am or stay after 4:00 pm. All campers are supervised by adults. Before and After Camp is only available to registered YPW campers.

How are campers supervised?Campers are supervised at all times. For your child’s security all campers MUST be escorted to and from their camp room by a parent or guardian and signed in and out EVERY DAY. We realize leaving your contact information each day may not always be convenient. In the event of an emergency, we want to have the most accurate contact information for you.

How should my child dress for camp?In comfortable clothes that may get messy

3 Frequently Asked Questions ContinuedCan you accommodate my child with special needs?

We are happy to accommodate children with special needs but we ask that you notify us of your child’s needs prior to your child’s first day of camp. Please help us help your child by notifying usof any allergies, accessibility concerns, behavioral, psychological or emotional conditions, or otherspecial needs. Please email the Camp Manager at [email protected].

While we hope to offer these camps to as wide a range of children as possible, it is not possible for us to offer one-on-one care. In the case of severe food allergies, it is not possible for us to monitor the food other children bring into camp.YPW is NOT responsible for administering medication to children. Consult a pediatrician aboutaltering the child’s dosage so that medication can be administered outside of camp hours.

To make it a full day camp, do I have to pick a morning and afternoon session?Yes. We offer a wide variety of camps. We strive to help our young campers to discover intelligent fun through our hands-on and fun camps exploring different branches of art, languages, math, science and technology.

What are the qualifications of your teachers and assistants?All of our teachers are certified school teachers or highly trained professionals with extensive experience in their respective fields. They all have experience working with children and enjoy hands-on interactive activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

May parents stay in the classroom?No. If you feel that your child is unable to remain in camp without you for more than a few minutes, you probably should wait a year before you send him/her to camp. Our weeklong camps promote independent learning and socialization. Parents are not allowed to remain in the classroom during camp hours.

What are the behavior expectations for campers?Camper expectations are posted in each room and are emphasized throughout the week. In case of a severe behavior problem, we will call you and ask you to pick up your child. At our discretion, your child may be allowed to return to camp the following day.

Whom may I contact during the day if I need to leave an emergency messageconcerning my child?Please call YPW Westlake at 512-329-5611 ; YPW Central at 512-401-3174A staff member will deliver your message to the appropriate person.

Does my child need to bring a lunch?Yes. Campers are supervised in their camp room while they eat lunch.

Campers will learn how engineers apply their scientific and technical knowledge to design machines and devices by engaging in hands-on activities.Explore engineering on land by building vehicles such as a race car and a wind-up car. Next, investigate engineering with air by building some of the following: a helicopter, a pinwheel, a balloon rocket, and an air-powered carousel. Then, build a diving bell, a sailboat and a paddle boat to experiment with engineering in water.

There is nothing that little people find more exciting that the rough, tough world of vehicles, aircraft and boats! This camp provides an interactive way for children to learn about the physical world in which they live by designing and building vehicles using Lego construction models. Young People explore basic mechanics and design features; learn to discuss, plan, and test ideas; and strengthen their sorting and classifying skills.

 ROBOCAMP Ages 6 To 12 - New projects and activities for returning campers - Westlake: June 15 – 19 1 to 4 pm; Central: July 6 – 10 1 to 4 pm; July 20 – 24 9 to 12 pm

Elementary and middle school kids form project teams to solve challenges by building and programming robots using the LEGO Mindstorms & NXT Robotics Invention System. In addition to having fun, participants learn about mechanical and software design, computer simulation, project management and teamwork skills. Parents are invited to an end-of-the session "graduation" at YPW New challenges included for returning campers.

Physics comes alive in this action-packed camp centered around a specially-designed “stomp-on” rocket launcher with three foam rockets. Launch water- and air-powered rockets to learn about action and reaction forces. Build a balloon propelled rocket, boat, and race car. Play a game to try to hit target “planets” with the foam rockets. Young People will explore the physical principles of gravity and inertia while launching rockets and having fun!

Learn how to perform dissections on a variety of animals including worms, grasshoppers, frogs among others in this fun and exciting hands-on biology camp. Young people will learn about the circulatory, respiratory, nervous, digestive, and immune systems of their own bodies and apply this knowledge to the dissection and analysis of animal body systems. They will also learn appropriate lab and dissection safety. Cook up some science in this camp! Who knew science could taste so good? In this camp, young people will whip up cupcakes, cookies, candy, and more all in the name of science! Learn what makes cakes rise, candy crystallize, and more real chemistry happen in the kitchen. Explore the science behind Bubble Gum, Butter, Corn Starch Plastic, Dancing Cereal and Ice Cream among others.

Clay has a natural calming effect that enhances creativity, visual thinking, and critical analysis.  Campers will learn the top three hand building techniques as they construct their family treasure.  Your child will also have the opportunity to make a whimsical sculpture.

Campers will dust for fingerprints, make disappearing ink, and become invisible sleuths as they work together to solve this week's mystery.  Your camper will also utilize clues on a team scavenger hunt, and join us for some group games.
