Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Twee men who rode their bicycles from Kanana to work and back in Klerks-dorp were killed last week when an Isuzu vehicle crashed into them.

Buti Piet More (43) and Zacharia Tefo Mafaesa (47) were killed instantly. The two men were friends and tried to cycle together each afternoon after they knocked off from work.

Piet worked at 4x4 Mega World and sometimes slept over on the business prem-ises but Zacharia, knows as Rasta at Kiekieman in Central Avenue where he worked, cycled the distance daily.

According to WO Elize Kruger, police spokesper-

son, the accident happened on Tuesday evening shortly after 19:00 on the Orkney Road towards Kanana.

“The driver of the Isuzu bakkie was transported to hospital with minor injuries but sadly the two cyclists passed away at the scene,’’ she said.

A case of culpable homi-cide is investigated.

Betty More told Lentswe that her brother will be dearly missed. They only discovered on Thursday morning that he was killed in the road accident. Piet is single and had two chil-dren. Rasta was married with two children.

Both funerals will be held on Saturday 24 April in Ka-nana.

He was born on 25 September 1972 at Wesselsbron in the Free State. He started his early education at Kabelo Primary and proceeded to Khu-mosejo Middle School

in Madibogo. He com-pleted matric at Matlosana Secondary School in Jou-berton and graduated from the NWU in Potchefstroom in 2006 (legal studies).

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - In the SARS ca-lendar, the big focus for April and May is on businesses that employ people.

During what is known as “Employer filing season”, companies have to sub-mit their annual reconciliation decla-rations (EMP501s) with the latest and most accurate payroll information about their employees and the tax they have deducted.

The data that must be submitted should cover the Monthly Employer Declarations, payments made and Tax Certificates (IRP5/IT3(a)s) generated, covering the full tax year from 1 March 2020 to 28 February 2021.

If employers don’t submit accurately and on time, it will have an impact on their employees when the time comes for them to file their individual tax returns. SARS uses this information to populate employees’ auto-assessments/income tax returns.

Let’s take a step back and look at how this relates to employees and the tax they pay while they are working...

Firstly, if you get a job for the first time, you are not required already to have an income tax number as your employer can apply for one on your be-half. Alternatively, you can register for an income tax number on your own by using eFiling.

Every month, your employer will deduct from your salary a certain amount of tax, known as Pay-as-you-Earn (PAYE), and pay it over to SARS. The reason why it is done on a monthly basis is to save you from having to pay a lump sum to SARS once a year when you file your income tax return.

Employers work out how much tax to pay SARS by consulting the SARS PAYE tables, which have different tax rates for employees who are paid weekly, fortnightly or monthly. The PAYE

calculated is based on the employee’s earnings and includes basic salaries, bo-nuses, fringe benefits and other income and allowances.

If you have been employed for less than a year, you may be entitled to a re-fund when submitting your income tax return (eg. if the amount you earned falls under the tax threshold, which is currently R87 300, you could get all the tax back from SARS that was paid over by your employer).

That is why it is so important that employers submit the correct payroll in-formation to SARS during this period. From SARS’ point of view, if they don’t do so accurately and on time, SARS will impose heavy penalties on employers (equaling 1% of the year’s PAYE up to a maximum of 10%, for each month that the return was late).

But what can you, as an employee do, to check that your employer is fulfilling

its obligations?Firstly, insist on an IRP5/IT3(a) certi-

ficate from your employer. They should send this to you by the beginning of June

Check that the IRP5/IT3(a) correctly reflects the salary you received and the taxes withheld from your salary is in accordance with what is stated on your payslip

Confirm with your employer that the reconciliation and payments have been submitted to SARS, then you should not have a problem when you submit your personal income tax return later in the year. Remember that PAYE is your tax withheld by your employer as an agent of SARS.

As an employer, please ensure your tax affairs are in order before we need to contact you. For more information on your tax responsibilities and how to be tax compliant, visit www.sars.gov.za

LENTSWE • 5FRIDAY, 23 APRIL 2021

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - All South Afri-cans who want to receive a COVID-19 vaccine and are over the age of 60, can now register through the electronic vac-cination data system.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize launched the system on Friday 16 April. Only people who registered on the system will be eligible to be vaccinated. People without Internet access will be assisted with their registration at vac-cination sites.

“The vaccine rollout will begin on 17 May,” Mkhize said. Those under 60 will be allowed to register at a later date that is yet to be announced.

How to register Go to https://vaccine.enroll.health.

gov.za/#/ and follow the easy steps. Vaccination is voluntary and every-

one who registers will be offered the vaccine. The registration process is as follows: Enter your South African ID Num-

ber. Enter your general information -

name and surname, date of birth, gender, email address, and mobile number. Provide your employment and

medical aid details if applicable. Select your primary location of

work and health establishment (from a dropdown list).

T o complete the registration, ac-cept the terms and conditions and click ‘Submit Registration’. The final screen will confirm that

your registration has been successful and you will receive an SMS notification confirming that your registration has been received by the EVDS.

“The information submitted during registration will be used to identify eligible vaccination beneficiaries and to plan the supply of vaccines and ancil-lary items.

“Residential data are needed to allocate beneficiaries to their nearest available service point while contact de-tails will be used to communicate with people about the vaccination program. The system needs your ID number or Passport, and general contact informa-tion, including a cellphone number.”

Mkhize said all steps of the vaccina-tion process will be available to those without the internet through walk-in services where people will be helped to register.

After a person has registered on the system and they become eligi-ble to be vaccinated, they will receive an SMS with the date, time, and venue where they will receive the vac-cine.

Vaccination sites will soon be an-nounced. They include health facilities such as hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, and GP practices as well as non-health sites such as schools, church halls, shopping centres and work-based oc-cupational health sites. When people present themselves at a site to receive

People who test positive for CO-VID-19 will not be allowed to receive the vac-cine. They will be given an opportunity to be vaccinated later.

“Everyone will be required to pro-vide proof of identity through an ID

card, drivers’ licence, or equivalent. Medical aid members are requested to bring these details along. There is a short consent process and a few questions to make sure that there’s no contraindication. After a person received the vaccine, they will be observed for 15 minutes. 6 • LENTSWE FRIDAY, 23 APRIL 2021

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) in North West on Tuesday 20 April urged newly elected School Governing Bodies (SGB’s) to prioritise school safety in order to eradicate bully-ing at schools.

The Civic organisation described the rising phenomenon as a scourge that accounts for depression among lear-ners, suicide and escalating learner drop out.

“They must be empowered to ensure that reporting mechanisms and disci-plinary processes are geared towards dealing decisively with bullying and dysfunctional adopt-a-cop structures ur-gently reviewed if learner safety is to be guaranteed at our schools,” emphasised SANCO Provincial Chairperson, Paul Sebegoe.

Sebegoe urged parents to be more supportive of their children particularly those going through the adolescence stage.

“Although bullying starts in the elementary stages, it is unbearable for the adolescent learner as it puts them under unbearable pressure. The humi-liation and being made public specta-cles by their peers’ results in low-self-esteem, bunking of classes, absenteeism as well as underperformance which should be red flags for the observant

parent,” he maintained. Sebegoe pointed out that Lufuno

Mavhungu’s tragic death that shoc-ked the nation was a stark reminder that the worst scenario is loss of pre-cious lives.

Sebegoe highlighted that without parental involvement, learners are co-erced into gangsterism in their guest to belong and seek protection.

He expressed concern regarding elections of SGB’s which had to be post-poned at some schools in this current reelection phase because parents could not quorate to constitute the required 50+1 quorum.

“Parental involvement in their chil-dren’s studies is key to the learning and teaching process without which ac-countability and discipline are adversely compromised,” he added.

Sebegoe further appealed for max-imum participation in the process to democratize and strengthen school governance that was earmarked to be concluded at the end of the month.

“SGB’s like Community Policing Fo-rums (CPF’s) and Health Forums are organs of people’s power that empower citizens to take charge of their shared responsibilities while making meaning-ful contributions towards addressing challenges facing their communities,” he concluded.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - MEC Desbo Mohono welcomed Thupi Mokhatla as the new Head of the North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

She described Mokhatla as a skilled senior public servant with more than 20 years of experience in the public service sector.

It is not Mokhatla’s first position in the NW local government. He is a former HOD in the Department of Human Settlement. In 2012, he was suspended from this position when allegations of misconduct were le-velled against him. His most re-cent position was that of Admin-istrator in the JB Marks Municipality.

Locals might remember him as a former Muni-cipal Manager of the Matlosana Municipality before he moved on to the West Rand. Last year, Mokhatla was ac-quitted of fraud charges five years after he was arrested with three former colleagues for

fraud in the West Rand Municipality amounting to R6m.

Mohono committed her support to the new accounting officer and that of the entire existing senior management team. She said that Mokhatla has proven leadership in governance and strategic manage-ment in public sector. “He posses-ses requisite skills and expertise in local government and municipal administration. He has, as part of

his strategic roles advocated seamless change demands as well as rational and pragmatic approach to his various work operations,’’ the MEC said.

He holds several higher education qua-lifications and those include two Masters Degrees; Master of Science in Develop-ment Planning as well as Master of Arts in Public Management and Governance.

lentswe • 7FRIDAY, 23 ApRIl 2021

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Students work-ing in the City of Matlosana’s Local Economic Development Department (LED) are unpaid for two months now, prompting the DA to ask what hap-pened to the R600 000 that was allo-cated towards the learnership.

According to Cllr Portia Burrell, the 25 students started a 12-month lear-nership programme with the Institute of Professional Studies and Services (IPSS) and the City of Matlosana LED Department with accreditation under

the Local Government Sector Educa-tion Training (LGSETA) in November last year.

“The contract stipulated that stu-dents would be paid a monthly allow-ance of R1800 for working 40 hours per week.

“Students were last paid in Janua- ry and have not received payment for the past two months,’’ the Councillor said.

The learnership was supposed to be a mechanism to upscale young people

with skills and to alleviate poverty in communities by creating skills develop-ment opportunities.

“The students who come from dis-advantaged backgrounds conveyed their frustrations that they are indebted and cannot afford transport to attend classes or to perform their functions. Students have been sent from pillar to post whilst communicating with the City of Matlosana, LGSETA and IPSS without any positive outcome. They even opened a case with the CCMA of-

fice in Matlosana against the municipa- lity,’’ Cllr Burrell said.

She added that the DA is monitoring the situation and wants to know where the money is that was allocated towards the learnership. “Last week the stu-dents were promised they will get their money. But no one said when. We will pressure the municipality until we find answers,’’ she said.

No response were received from the municipality at the time of going to press.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Expect to see motorcycles adorned with the Check-ers Sixty60 logo criss-crossing the city from this week.

Checkers launched its Sixty60 on demand one-hour grocery delivery service in the city on Tuesday 20 April.

The service will run from the Checkers Hyper in the CBD.

According to store manager, Lali-tha Devraj, since first launching in late 2019 in a few neighbourhoods in the Western Cape and Gauteng, Checkers has rapidly expanded Sixty60 throughout the country.

“Customer response has been exceptional due to the service’s lightning fast speed, ease of use and

its innovative and safe solution to hav-ing groceries delivered at the touch of a button at the same value for money for which Checkers is renowned. It also recently launched a new recycling initiative for its brown paper bags that

will help close the recycling loop of its customers by allowing them to return their used bags with Sixty60 drivers for recycling.”

The appreciation for this service is evident in the number of awards

Sixty60 recently received, in-cluding:n the People’s Choice Award

and the Best Enterprise Solu-tion at the 2020 MTN Business App of the Year Awardsn the 2020 BCX Digital In-

novation Awardsn a gold award in the Service

Design category at the 2020 Loerie Awardsn gold awards for Tech In-

novation and Business Unusual

at the Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) South Africa SMARTIES Awards 2020n named one of Memeburn’s best

apps of 2020n Excellence in New Product or

Brand Launch, Excellence in Market-ing Innovation and the Excellence in Digital Brand Awards at the 2021/21 Marketing Achievement Awardsn and named Stuff Magazine’s best

shopping app of 2020. With more than 1 million app

downloads, over 15 000 groceries to choose from on the Sixty60 app and delivery in as little as 60 minutes at a fee of just R35, it remains South Af-rica’s fastest and cheapest on demand grocery delivery service.

Lentswe, Potchefstroom - Two new exhibi-tions are now available at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Gallery.

Both exhibitions will be showcased from 11 April to 11 May.

Unfortunately access to members of the public is currently prohibited due to lockdown regulations, but members of the public can still partake in these exhibitions by viewing it online

One of the exhibitions, titled “#5WO-MENARTISTS - The art of clay”, is by a ceramic art group that features the works of five South African female artists: Ivy

Rihlampfu, Pholile Hlongwane, Boitumelo Machaba, Lerato Moleko and Prudence Magagula.

This exhibition was inspired by the New York National Museum of Women in Arts’ online campaign, aiming to give more exposure to women in the arts.

It is being showcased at the NWU Bo-tanical Garden Gallery.

The solo exhibition of Lerato Lodi - titled “Morapedi, one who prays” - is avai-lable at the NWU Main Gallery.

In this exhibition, NWU Gallery curator

Amohelang Mohajane and artist Lerato Lodi explore Lodi’s spiritual journey and what spirituality means to both of them.

Lodi investigates her familial archive and matriarchal upbringing through notions of object biographies and visual memories.

If you are interested in purchasing any of the artwork, you can con-tact NWU gallery curator Amo-helang Mohajane via email [email protected]/[email protected]).

Lentswe, Klerksdorp – The Klerks-dorp/Tshepong Hospital Complex’s Eye Clinic recently held a “blitz” pro-gramme to see to eye problems.

This is the first time since lockdown

that the clinic is in operation again. “This blitz provided the clinic with the perfect opportunity to operate on pa-tients, as the clinic already had about 327 patients on a waiting list,” said

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - There will be a delay in the payments of the CO-VID-19 social relief grant for March and April due to the transition in government financial years.

Paseka Letsatsi, spokesperson, said SASSA is currently busy with these end of financial year tasks which has delayed payment.

“The end of March is the end of the financial year for government and various administrative tasks are required before any payments which relate to the previous financial year can be made,” he said.

The relief grant was extended on 11 February 2021 after all admin sys-tems at SASSA closed. The systems were reactivated immediately and the application channel was once again operational on 13 February.

Letsatsi said 86 363 new applica-tions were received for February alone.

“Every single one of the more than 10 million applications for this grant are validated on a monthly basis, to ensure that payments are made to applicants who do qualify for the grant. Payments for February were thus made at the end of February and early March. The applications for March were validated as usual after the payments for February had been completed, but could not be ex-tracted for payment before 31 March 2021.’’

SASSA CEO Totsie Memela apolo-gised and said that all deserving ap-plicants will receive payments as soon as the administrative processes have been completed.”

Clinic “sees” to eye problemsNico Masiu, spokesperson.

On Saturday 17 April, the clinic man-aged to operate on 15 patients, and on Sunday they operated on 14 patients. One of those patients who was operated on was John Tokwini from Maphoitsile in Taung who was happy and pleased.

“I have been on the waiting list since October 2020. Finally I have my full eye sight back,” he said.

He is looking forward to spending time with his family.

“I slept in the hospital on Friday but now all I want is to go back home. I would love to thank all the staff who made sure that my operation went well. Words fail me to express my happiness and sincere gratitude.”

According to Head of the Depart-ment, Dr Caroline Chiwara, they ma-naged to see and operated on 29 pa-tients.

“We have a very long list of patients

waiting to be operated on. Most of our patients have cataract problems that need to be dealt with as soon as possible, but lockdown and Covid 19 stopped us from operating,” said Chi-wara.

She outlined that before lockdown happened her department used to book a patient a week to three weeks and then operate but now it’s difficult and there is a backlog which will have to be dealt with.

“The only effective treatment for ca-taracts is surgical removal. Cataract sur-gery should be considered when having difficulty seeing well enough to do the things you enjoy, such as reading and driving. Cataract surgery is usually per-formed as a day case procedure under local anaesthesia. During the operation, the cloudy lens, cataract is replaced with an artificial lens inside your eye,” concluded Chiwara.

Optometrist Adam Maleke, Nurse Dieketseng Leokaoke, Dr Mamaki Molaakgosi, Medical Officer, Nurse Palesa Modiakgotla, Nurse Lucky Molemane, John Tokwini who was amongst the patients who were operated on during the Eye Clinic Blitz, Dr Candice Edgar, Medical Officer, Dr Christo Scholtz, Medical Officer, Dr Caroline Chiwara, Head Of Department who also led the programme at Klerksdorp Hospital during this past weekend, and Dr Thabang Lobese, Medical Intern.
