The North West Trailis a 326kmcircular cycle route throughcounties Donegal, Tyrone, Fermanagh, Leitrim, and Sligo in theNorth West of Ireland.
The route travels through a wide variety of scenic landscapes,along quiet country roads with traffic free sections in urban areas.
The route enjoys dramatic views of the Atlantic Ocean, withscenic cycling in remote uplands, along Rossnowlagh beachand through rural towns and villages passing through the maintowns of Enniskillen, Sligo, Donegal, Ballybofey, Stranorlar,Lifford, Strabane and Omagh.
Traffic free sections include riverside paths in Sligo, Enniskillenand Omagh. A forest route brings cyclists through FlorenceCourt estate which is set against the backdrop of theCuilcagh Mountains.
Attractions Along the Route
Harry Avery’s Castle, NewtownstewartThe majestic ruins ofHarry Avery’s Castle,situated 1 km fromNewtownstewart arebelieved to date fromeither the 14th or 15thcentury. The stone castlewas named after andwas possibly built by
Harry Aimbreidh O’Neill, a local Gaelic Chief celebrated for hisjustice, nobility and hospitality. The former stronghold of theO’Neill clan commands a panoramic view over the Mourne Valley.
Ulster American Folk Park, OmaghThe Ulster American FolkPark includes an open-airmuseum dedicated tothe story of emigrationfrom Ulster to America inthe 18th & 19thcenturies. It providesvisitors with a “living
history” experience with costumed demonstrators carrying outtheir everyday tasks in the traditional manner in authenticallyfurnished Old and New World buildings. Inside the Ship andDockside Gallery features a full-size reconstruction of an early19th century sailing ship of the type which carried thousands ofemigrants across the Atlantic.
Marble Arch Caves European Geopark, near EnniskillenHost to one ofEurope's finest showcaves, the MarbleArch Caves allowvisitors to explore afascinating, naturalunderworld of rivers,waterfalls and loftychambers. Lively and
informative guides conduct regular tours using electricallypowered boats that glide through the huge caverns, carryingvisitors along a subterranean river to explore the fascinatingunderground world of stalagmites and stalactites.
Creevalea Abbey, Dromahair The ruins of Creevalea Abbey are situated just behind the villageof Dromahair which translates as the “Ridge of the two demons”.Built in 1508, the Friary's well preserved ruins stand in a romanticsetting in quiet surroundings on the banks of the Bonet River atits entry point to Lough Gill. The ruins contain a carving of SaintFrancis preaching to the birds.
Drumcliffe Church and Visitor Centre, near SligoDrumcliffechurchyard, nestledunder Benbulbenmountain is the finalresting place of poetW.B.Yeats. Theheadstone bears hisown epitaph: "Cast acold eye on life, on
death, Horseman pass by". Drumcliffe is also the site of a 6thcentury ancient monastic settlement founded by St. Colmcille ofwhich just a stump of a Round Tower and a fine carved HighCross, c 11th century, remain.

Rossnowlagh Beach, County Donegal The golden sands ofRossnowlagh areoften referred to as'The HeavenlyCove' and areregarded by manyas the most scenicand dramatic beachin the whole of the
North West. The Atlantic Coast beach with Blue Flag status isset in a 4km crescent with views of the Donegal Bay Coastlineincluding Slieve League, the highest sea cliffs in Europe.

The Sperrins Twelve circular signedroutes ranging in lengthfrom 11 – 41 miles areavailable in the Sperrins.Access from the NorthWest Trail onto SperrinRoutes 3 and 6 is atSion Mills andNewtownstewart,County Tyrone.
Ballyshannon Hub RoutesTwo signed circular routes each approx 32km in length radiatefrom Ballyshannon in County Donegal, one to the north andthe other to the south of the town.
Short Break RidesShorter circular routes can be created by utilising sections ofthe North West Trail combined with National Cycle Networkroutes 91 or 95.
