Welcome and introduction
Northampton College would like to thank you for taking the time to visit and learn more about the proposals for the Daventry campus.
The context for this exhibition is the need to improve the range and quality of the College’s existing facilities in Daventry. The reason for the project is to improve the education offer of the town with the provision of exciting new facilities which will help to stem the flow of students leaving the town to receive their education.
This exhibition is being made available to as many local people and stakeholders as possible. It has been announced in the local press and local households in the immediate area have been leafleted. In addition, the exhibition material is also available to view on the College’s website:- www.northamptoncollege.ac.uk/daventryplans
The College would like to explain the more detailed work on the new building’s design that has been undertaken to date and is very keen to hear your views and ideas. College staff and the consultant team are on hand to answer any questions you may have.
What does the proposal comprise?
The proposal involves the construction of new high quality further education facilities on part of the existing site. It is the College’s intention to have the new facilities operational in time for the beginning of the 2016-17 academic year (September 2016). To help facilitate this ambitious project, the College is proposing to sell part of the existing site for residential development. Any proceeds from this sale will be reinvested directly back into the College’s capital investment programme. A public exhibition took place earlier this year where the residential element was described in more detail.

The need for a new college
Northampton College merged with Daventry Tertiary College in 2004. In 2007 the College announced its intention to replace the existing buildings in Daventry with purpose-built facilities. Unfortunately, Government funding cuts at the time meant that it was not possible to implement the proposal for Daventry. Prior to this, the Daventry Campus had witnessed little capital investment since the buildings were constructed in the 1970s. This has led to the current position whereby existing physical resources:
• Are considered to have reached the end of their economic life – small-scale investment would not eliminate inherent building defects meaning that replacement is seen as the only viable proposition• Are dated, meaning that the College is no longer able to meet the needs of students and staff • Are expensive to maintain and operate• Do not meet the sustainability agenda• Are too large for current and future needs • Are currently under-utilised.
In August 2014, the College secured grant support from South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership towards the cost of replacing the existing buildings in Daventry. In order to realise this ambition, the College needs to generate further additional capital funding, a proportion of which it is envisaged will come from disposal proceeds for some of the Badby Road site.

The masterplan
The indicative masterplan below shows, in outline, the proposed arrangement of the College facilities and adjacent residential development.
The masterplan retains the existing perimeter trees and landscaping wherever possible, and allows for open landscaped edges alongside - unless there are existing ‘built’ edges.
The 2 and 3 storey College building is located centrally within the site, set back from Badby Road West to maintain the open campus feel around it. Sports pitches are located to the north of Badby Road West, in their existing position, to retain the openness of this part of the site.
The Design Principles plan shows how the proposals can respond to the site’s existing character and layout. The aim has been to locate the College in a position which is accessible, and to enable the pitches to maintain the openness of this part of the site. The residential development is shown to accommodate the land to the north and west of the College building, connecting with existing residential uses and open space.
One of the guiding principles of the layout is to maintain the playing fields and landscaping along the Badby Road frontage, and for development to be set well back from it. The College and its associated pitches is therefore positioned within this part of the site.
Access is shown to be taken from the existing access point at Badby Road West, with a secondary access from Yeomanry Way. Additional pedestrian connection points could be formed into Grovelands and to the adjoining open space to the west.

Providing sufficient well designed and easily accessible car parking is one of the most important considerations in ensuring that the redevelopment of the college is successful. The redevelopment is proposing 90 car parking spaces, together with coach drop off and parking as well as secure cycle and motorbike parking.
As well as car parking, proposals for landscaping include tree planting along the front of the College, as well as native hedge planting around the perimeter, planted around a weldmesh fence.
Parking and accessThis plan shows the location of the main vehicular access to the campus off the existing entrance point from Badby Road West, together with the location of the coach drop off and layby parking.
LandscapingThis plan shows the location of the sports pitches, the extent of the new boundary hedge, as well as the location of the existing and new proposed new tree planting areas.

Plans
The new facilities will replace the existing College buildings and will comprise general teaching accommodation, such as general purpose and IT/Mac classrooms, and specialist teaching accommodation including hairdressing & beauty therapy salons, motor vehicle workshop, engineering workshop and science labs.
The new building would also provide a cafeteria, library and learning resource centre, staff and other support facilities. It is proposed that Moulton College will lease workshop spaces from the college. The hairdressing, beauty therapy and sports facilities will be available for community use.

Proposed elevations
The proposed elevations show a modern design, with lots of windows to allow generous amounts of light into the building, and the mass of the building is broken down into smaller elements, with the library and its full height windows and the fully glazed entrance area providing the focus to the front of the building on the western elevation.
The proposed new building will be built to high environmental standards using the Building Research Establishment’s BREEAM rating system.
