    Although many homeowners gravitateard new paint colors or furnishings tomp the look of different rooms in the

    me, replacing tired-looking doors is

    her affordable option.The switching out of doors can be a

    -impact project for little cost. Thinkut the room in the house where ther(s) add little appeal. Perhaps aroom door has been marred withs from a former towel rack. Aoom with simple, flat doors may lack

    ache. Some doors have been warpedmoisture or have been damaged.se eyesores can be replaced.

    A trip to the hardware or homerovement store can yield a number ofons in new doors. Hollow core doorsypically more affordable than solidd doors. If cost is a factor, selectng the various styles in hollowgns.witching out a door can be alenging endeavor and is often easiesttwo-person job. Some people simply

    use the old door as a template for thenew door.

    Remember, not all doors are the samesize (width and height) as the existingdoor opening. Therefore, some cuttingand fitting will be necessary.

    Here are some steps to follow.1. Measure the width and height of the

    old door. Many doors are a standardwidth of 13/8 inches, though older doorsmay be different in width.

    2. Doors are sold as pre-hung doors ordoor blanks. Pre-hung ones aresurrounded by a jamb. When using thesedoors, measure accordingly taking the

    jamb under consideration. Blanks aresimply the door with no holes for hingesor locksets already included.

    3. Remove the old door by taking outthe hinge pins, starting from the bottomand working up. You may need ascrewdriver and a hammer to tap outstubborn pins. Keep the pins in a safespot.

    4. Lay the old door on top of the newdoor and trace the dimensions for cutting.Be sure to line up the lockset edge sothings will line up. There should be 1/8inch clearance on the sides of the door

    and 5/8 inch clearance on the bottom.5. Use a circular saw to cut the door

    accurately. If only a little needs to beremoved from the door, consider using ahand plane instead. If you need toremove more than 1 inch, take half offthe bottom and top of the door so it willbe even.

    6. Place the old door back on top ofthe new. Mark the location of the hingemortices (the recessed area and holeswhere the hinges will fit) with a utilityknife and straight edge.

    7. Lightly chisel out the hingemortices so that they are the rightthickness to house the hinge hardware.Test the hinge in the mortice.

    8. Test the doors fit within theopening to ensure all cuts are accurate.Plane areas if there is anything that is offor if the door rubs.

    9. Mark and drill the space for thelockset and doorknob. Test the fit.

    10. Attach the new door and interlacethe hinges. Have a helper put in the hingepins.

    11. Put in the knob and be sure theentire set up works correctly.

    12. Enjoy the new door.

    Spraying is another way to control

    curculio, but instead of the usual

    chemical pesticide sprays, use a spray

    derived from nothing more than kaolin

    clay. The material, marketed under thename Surround, leaves a white coating

    on the fruit. Build up a good, powdery

    base with three sprays just before trees

    bloom, then spray every seven to 10

    days, or after heavy rains.

    The clay spray also thwarts codling

    moth, with its signature big, fat worm.

    This pest is active for much of the

    season, but even unchecked, affects

    only 25 percent of fruits.

    Disease

    Although apple insects have

    cosmopolitan tastes, disease organisms

    are finicky. So another way to control

    diseases is to plant one of the many

    disease-resistant varieties. One that I

    grow, Liberty, is resistant to all the

    major apple diseases.

    Even without paying particular

    attention to planting disease-resistant

    varieties, you can harvest a reasonably

    good yield of reasonably clean fruit

    using a combination of cleanup, limited

    spraying and traps. This is especially

    true in Western states, where some of

    these pest problems are less severe.Cosmetically, my fruits put on a poor

    show compared with the apples you see

    in markets. But mine are pesticide-free,

    and the Macouns, Jonagolds, Spitzen-

    bergs and other select varieties that I

    grow are simply scrumptious picked at

    their peaks of perfection. I hope Adams

    apple was as good.
