AlgomaTrad 2016 will take place at locations throughoutRichards Landing, including the Centennial Grounds, the Le-gion Hall, the St. Joseph Island Central Public School, and theOld Town Hall. As is customary, workshops will occur duringthe day from Monday to Friday in a vast array of choices, in-cluding fiddle, piano, whistle and flute, guitar, claw hammerbanjo, bagpipes, singing, Ottawa Valley-style Stepdance, con-tra, square and Irish set dancing, community arts, basket mak-ing, and much, much more. Evenings will feature concerts,dances, song circles, sessions and a fundraising live/silent auc-tion.

The Algo-maTrad community and staff will be working to provide amusical score for TRCA’s multi-community, intergenera-tional community arts project, Rivers Speak, which is sched-uled to be performed across the North Shore in 2017.
Ruth Howard, artistic director of Jumblies Theatre Companyfrom Toronto (jumbliestheatre.org) will also be on hand tohelp with the Rivers Speak project. Ruth, a committed Irishset dancer, will also be offering instruction in Irish Set Dance(the Irish version of square dancing).

WE HAVE ALL OWNED A TEDDY BEAR at one time, buthave you ever wondered how the Teddy Bear received itsname? Did you know there was a Teddy Bear being made inGermany at the same time? I’m getting ahead of the story.Let’s go back a little and learn how the Teddy Bear received itsname and how American president Theodore “Teddy” Roo-sevelt ties into the tale.
It was said the name came after a hunting incident in Missis-sippi in November 1902 where Roosevelt refused to shoot abear that the other hunters had captured. He called the otherhunters “unsportsmanlike”. Although he, himself refused toshoot the bear he suggested that the bear be put out of itsmisery. Of course political cartoonists heard of this incidentand busily began to draw up their interpretations of the inci-dent. At first the cartoons were a realistic drawing of a blackbear, then eventually over time they became a cartoon imageof a bear.
Morris Mitchom saw the illustrations which inspired him tocreate a tiny stuffed bear. He sent one and a letter to Roo-sevelt to receive permission to use his name. The toy was a hitand Mitchom began the Ideal Novelty and Toy Company andas they say the rest is history.
Now, all the way over in Germany Richard Steiff had designedthe first jointed Teddy Bear. It was the world’s first stuffed toywith moveable arms and legs. The bears first made their ap-pearance at the Leipzig Toy Trade Fair in 1903 where theycaught the eye of an American trader. He purchased all thatwere there at the fair and ordered another 3,000 bears to besent to the United States. The bears began to sell immediatelythanks in part to the name “Teddy” bear. To distinguish theirbears from imposters the Steiff Company patented the “but-ton in ear” trademark in 1904.
Early Steiff bears were made to look like real bears but even-tually over time they began to take on more of a cartoon likeappearance, with bigger eyes and smaller noses. These bearsare quite popular with collectors of today and old bears from1910 can bring in significant amounts at auction.
This Sunday July 24 is our annual Teddy Bear Picnic at themuseum, please join us from 1-4 pm. There are activities forall including face painting, games, crafts and even a magicshow!
So pack your picnic, a blanket and your Teddy Bear and headover the St. Joseph Island Museum for the afternoon. Admis-sion is by donation or free with a teddy bear or fancy hat.

Highway Repairs Causing Damage to Vehicles
I am writing to ask if it is possible for the Clippings to do asurvey on how many flat tires people have had since thestarting of the re-surfacing of the highway on the Island. Sofar in between Hamilton Bay Road and the U Line, we havehad 5 flats and one cracked windshield.
This is because of the stones/gravel that they are using. All 5tires were caused by sharp stones and the windshield, we sawthat one coming, literally! We were following the new postedspeed limit to minimize the damage from the rocks to the ve-hicles. So much for that idea!
I know that they are trying to keep up with a better highway,but it is costing money to get these tires replaced and orfixed. I know that we are not the only one, but how manymore?
