How Do I Use EPD’s?

Is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.

Expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf ’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

The expected overall difference in weaning weight pounds of calves out of a bull’s daughters compared to calves from daughters of a bull with a zero EPD for total maternal. The total materanl EPD is a measure of both growth and milking ability and is an indication of the size of calf a bull’s daughter will wean. The maternal milk EPD is combined with half of the weaning growth EPD to produce the total maternal EPD. This is a prediction of the total genetic influence that a sire will have on his daughter’s progeny.

Imagine you are interested in purchasing a couple of bulls for your herd. You are looking at the EPDs in a sale catalogue. Bull A has a weaning weight (WW) EPD of +10 and Bull B has a WW of +60. What does that mean? How can you use those EPDs to choose between the two bulls? If these animals were randomly mated with 10 similar cows, we would expect the group average weaning weight of Bull A’s offspring to be 50 lbs lighter than that of Bull B’s (60-10=50). So, if you were interested in producing heavier calves, Bull B would be the one to choose. Remember, EPDs evaluate group average and offspring’s performance. They cannot predict individual performance or weights.

Stout is the best way to describe this bull. He displays excellent muscling, body depth, and disposition. This calf exhibited explosive growth from birth to weaning in a dry year when grass was scarce, and he has continued to pound the scale down at Lazy B. 6X’s dam is a feminine, easy doing cow who always gets the job done well. If you are looking for an easy calving sire whose calves will perform, this is your next herd sire.

1X has always been a stand out. He is a moderate framed bull that is a smooth made with good muscle expression and thickness. His dam is a model cow with excellent feet and a nice tidy udder; that always brings in a strong calf in the fall. 1X has continued to gain well at Lazy B test, offering exceptional performance in a solid package.

11X is a long bodied yearling with a lot of maternal strength in his pedigree. His sire is a home raised bull whose dam, 2K, is one of our top producing cows. 11X’s paternal grandsire, Density, is known for his exceptionally maternal daughters, and his paternal grandsire, Bando, is known for his calving ease and carcass traits. Backed by breed leading sires, 11X will work well on all types of cows and heifers.

20X is a larger framed bull who exhibited great growth from birth to weaning, and continues to gain well at Lazy B. His dam is an excellent cow at Wyspering Wynds, who consistently brings home one of the growthiest calves in the fall. Bennett Total sires highly maternal females with excellent udders, and he does not sacrifice growth or productivity in his calves. If you are looking for a bull to produce productive replacement females without losing growth, 20X will work for you.

14X is a true calving ease bull who exhibited excellent growth from birth to weaning. His dam is from Dennis and Shelly Erikson’s Get-A-Long farm in Wetaskiwin, Alberta. She is a strong and maternal brood cow. I used her first bull calf in our herd and was not disappointed with the calving ease or the grow-ability of his calves. Thunder is a leading calving ease sire that does not sacrifice performance in his calves, as can be seen in 14X.

Our bulls have been fed at Charly and Lucille Belsham’s Lazy B feedlot in Fort Fraser. The bulls are fed a ration to obtain a 3lb per day gain.

We have been developing our herd of the last few years carefully selecting top quality females, using top AI sires and using the best walking bulls we could find. We calved out close to 50 cows this winter and plan to breed 70 head this spring.

11X is sired by our home raised herdsire Poplar Meadows Freedom 2U. 2U was champion angus bull at all three shows he was entered in this past summer. 11X is a standout calf with length, volume and worlds of performance. The Freedom bloodline produces extremely quiet and easy to deal with temperaments. 11X’s mother is a moderate framed 1400 lb cow.

113X is sired by MVF Retail Product 54S who sired all my bulls that I sold last year in the Vanderhoof bull sale. 113X ‘s dam is an 11 year old cow who has picture perfect feet, udder moderate framed and very fertile. His dam is owned by Nikki Royer of Houston. 113X is very smooth and has added length. He is a mid April calf who will be plenty big enough to breed cows.

O7X is sired by the up and coming breed legend SAV Pioneer. 07X is extremely long, smooth and has a quiet disposition. His dam is a model 1350 lb cow who weaned him at 840 lbs on Oct 8th. More than 60% of her weight and no creep feed. Both commercial and purebred breeders should take a good look at this guy.

A light birth weight bull out of a moderate framed 3 year old Peak Dot Hobson daughter. Full brother this year weighed 78lbs at birth. This guy is really smooth, lots of length and thick over the top.

If you want them thick and deep, don’t pass this guy by! Maternal brothers have sold to Woodmere Cattle Co. and Mel Gulbranson. 2x was a twin to a heifer. The dam raised them both out on the range weaning more than 1300 pounds of calf! The dam is one of my favourite cows, deep bodied, thick ,great feet and udder.

Exellent hair coat on this smooth bull. Out of a cow we purchased as a 4 year old from Peak Dot Ranch in Saskatchewan. We have 2 maternal sisters working in our herd and a maternal sister is a donor cow for Peak Dot Ranch.

A stand out since birth. 16x’s dam is a model Angus cow-moderate framed, deep ribbed, feminine, perfect udder and feet. She is sired by the Hobson bull whose daughters can really produce. Lots of stretch in this guy and he is really thick .

A powerhouse of a bull out of a never miss cow. This is our biggest framed bull with lots of performance. Dam has raised herd sires for Gumbo Gulch Angus and Mountain Ash Angus as well as our high selling bull at $3850 at the 2006 Williams Lake Bull Sale.

Meat and muscle! A square hipped meat machine with lots of depth too. Dam has produced daughters that have sold to Vernon Angus and Wynnyk Farms. The Lady Heather cow family are extremely good producers. As you will see, a number of the bulls come out of this family. Great udder on this cow too.

A little younger bull out of the popular AI sire Red Six Mile Sackic 832S. The dam is Tori’s original cow which came from Deep Creek Angus. She wops out a great calf year after year, no matter what she is bred to! Maternal brothers have sold to High Lonesome Ranch, IC Ranch and Walter Steidl. All Red Moon bulls are fed at home. They are fed a balanced ration not exceeding 1% of the pens average weigh, along with a dry mixed grass and alfalfa forage. Minerals are fed free choice. All bulls are weighed monthly. Weights can be viewed on our web page www.redmoonangus.com. The bulls are fed to grow and are not pushed, at time of writing the pen average gain is 3.5lbs per day. The pen will be vet checked and semen tested before the sale and vaccinations are up-to-date. They will be ready to go to work for you.

Our cow herd is a maternal herd. We breed for the maternal traits. We strive to produce moderate frames, calving ease , and profitable weaning weights. The females have eye appeal, with that comes sound conformation, good udders and sound feet.

Last fall we sold a group of his heifers in the Northern Highlights Sale in Vanderhoof, they topped the sale. Red Moon had the high selling bred heifer Red Moon Goldie 16W going to Brad and Anita Schappel of Heart of the Valley Farms, Courtenay BC, for $4 000.00 and the high selling heifer calf Red Moon Pralee 15X also selling to Heart of the Valley Farms for $3 000.00.

Andy Meints of Houston, Henry Meints of Houston and Giddings Brothers of Telkwa also took home Red Moon heifers, sired by Red Northline Crush 59R. The average price on Red Northline Crush59R sired bred heifers was $3 062.00 and on heifer calves was $2 083.00. Crush progeny have been shown in both Canada and the US.

Two of the bulls on offer are sired by Red Get-A-Long Ten 710. This bull was purchased from Get-A-Long Stock Farms, Dennis and Shelly Ericson of Wetaskiwin, Alberta. Ten has produced some of the best heifer bulls we have raised, low birth weight and respectable weaning weights. These two calves have exceptional pedigrees. One is a grandson of our Canadian Red Angus Champion, Red Northline Rev 341R, owned in partnership with Northline Angus, Tripple L Angus, Viscount Saskatchewan and Two M Angus, Cudworth Saskatchewan.

The dam Red Brox Dynastorm 28L has produced some excellent progeny. She always puts the pounds on the calf. A really good mother cow with exceptional confirmation. She is moderate in frame and deep in body. Low birth weight epd on this bull with a high milk epd.

The dam Red Moon Perlene is one of the quietest we have. She is an easy keeper and always raises a great calf. Her sire Red Get-A-long Mesquite 272 really put some depth of body into his females. This cows mother was Tom’s 4H project, topping the show ring in Prince George, Vanderhoof and Smithers. Low birth weight epd and high milk epd.

The dam has consistently weaned a large calf. The dam Red Moon Bayberry 18R carries the genes of two of the best walking bulls we have ever used on our farm, Red Brox Hi-Line 17H and Red Get-A-Long Mesquite. Both of those sires have left their mark on Red Moon females. Another low birth weight epd and high milk epd and really good calving ease epd. Carrying lots of the really good maternal traits in this bull.

This is the first of two bulls in the sale from Red Get-A-Long Ten 710. Ten has consistently produced really good heifer bulls for us. This calf has a lower birth weight with a respectable weaning weight. This is a bull from a first calf heifer. Her sire is the first of the producing daughters from the Canadian Red Angus Champion bull Red Northline Rev 341R. We have no doubt about the excellent mothering traits in these Rev daughters and are sure Rev will leave a super mark on our herd. The dam of the bull, Red Moon Reba goes back to one of first purchases in the Red Angus business, Red Brylor Alexis 67B. She could put more pounds of gain on a calf then most. She is also the cow that started our son’s small herd. Great yearling epd and milk epd in this bull.

This bull is a twin to Moon 13X, listed next. We can’t say enough about the production from this cow. She raised both bull calves on her own, ad the numbers. Moon 12X weaned 783lbs and Moon 13X weaned 923 lbs. The cow has been a consistent producer and averaged on single births 88lbs. Her production is phenomenal.

We bought our first pure bred angus in 1965 and have been raising them ever since. We have stayed with the same goals, fertility, moderate birth weights, good gains and good maternal traits. After all this time we feel our animals are predictable. Our aim has always been to raise low maintenance cattle in a ranch type environment running on bush pastures in the summer and wintering on a hay diet. We are pleased with our consignments all sired by a homebred bull. We have had our bulls fed at Lazy B feedlot for the past sixteen years. These bulls are fed a ration to express their potential. It is programmed for a three pound gain. We have sold bulls from there for the past years and have never had a problem.

From our top Leadtime of Alcan 150 cow. She is a real producer and has bulls working for Myles Storey and James Breit. Probably the easiest keeping cow in our herd. This is real herd sire material.

A maternal sister to his dam is at Remington Cattle in Alberta. His granddam produced 15 calves for us. Cow family traces to our original purchases in 1965. These Ericas have weathered our selection for the past 40 plus years.

TermsThe terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable at par. Cheques to be made payable to sale clerks on sale day unless prior arrangements have been made. The right of property shall not pass until settlement is made. All settlement is made with the clerks of the sale before any cattle will be released. US funds will be accepted at current rate of exchange announced sale day.

Bids and DisputesEvery animal will be sold to the highest bidder. In case of disputes, bidding will re-open between the parties involved. If no further bid is made the buyer will be the persons from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such a matter will be final.

AnnoucementsAny corrections or announcements made from the block on sale day will take precedence over the catalogue.

Purchasers RiskEach animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as it’s sold or as soon as the auctioneers gavel falls.

Certificate of RegistryA certificate of Canadian registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer of each animal sold as a registered animal after settlement is made in a timely manner.

Breeders GuaranteeAll cattle are sold sound and right with a responsible breeder guarantee of satisfaction. In the event of an unlikely dispute the terms and conditions standard with the Canadian Aberdeen Angus Association shall apply.

LiabilityAlthough every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comfort of the buyers, the auctioneer, sale management, sale staff, the auction mart and owners assume no responsibility in this matter and disclaim any liability, legal or otherwise in the event of an accident or loss of property.
