Keeping to traditional values

by Joanne Speechly

NorthSouth Multi Media launches its new brand this month, Integrity Community Media.

The publisher of two community and five rural newspapers throughout New Zealand, including Northern Farming Lifestyles, aims to highlight the link and common set of core values these publications share.

“The dictionary definition of integrity is ‘firm adherence to a code of values’, and this truly reflects the aspirations and intentions that are at the foundation of all NorthSouth Multi Media publications,” says managing director, Allan Mortensen.

“Integrity is something we believe our readers and advertisers expect and something we as a company aspire to every day. In the world of the information superhighway, too much has been lost in the frenetic pace of modern media.”

For NorthSouth Multi Media, adherence to long established publishing values is important, and accuracy in reporting and sourcing material is paramount, as is the presentation of all publications.

“We believe in established fact, in correct spelling, in commas, quotation marks and full stops. Old fashioned values — ‘full stop’.

“These values constitute the benchmark we set for ourselves, for our writers, our designers, our client services teams, and most of all — our readers. NorthSouth Multi Media is a mirror in which the community reflects itself and that reflection will be true — without distortion.”

NorthSouth Multi Media is 100% New Zealand owned and operated, and Mr Mortensen says that in an age where international outsourcing is prevalent within the newspaper publishing industry — NorthSouth Multi Media is proud to provide jobs for New Zealanders.

Goat industry poised for take-offNew Zealand’s goat sector has taken a positive step towards a profitable, sustainable future following the conclusion of the inaugural NZGoats conference, held in Queenstown last month.

“For the first time, the event brought together three organisations representing the New Zealand goat fibre and goat meat sectors: Mohair New Zealand (Inc.); Meat Goat New Zealand and the New Zealand Boer Goat Breeders Association (Inc.),” says NZGoats chairperson Dawn Sangster.

“The event marked the first conference of NZGoats, an organisation established by Mohair NZ and Meat Goat New Zealand and operating under the Federated Farmers umbrella. The objective is to add value by fostering the development of a reinvigorated and unified goat sector,” says Ms Sangster.

The value of open dialogue on common issues was seen as a good opportunity to build the goat industry in New Zealand. The event provided the first occasion for some years for Boer goat breeders to meet their Mohair colleagues face-to face.

The 2014 conference was fortunate to have a number of high calibre industry speakers providing reports of practical use to goat farmers.

“Presentations challenged those attending to think critically about their industry and how they can work with

others in the value chain to farm goats sustainably and profitably,” explained Meat Goat New Zealand chairman Doug Lineman.

While the NZ goat industry has realistic challenges to overcome before a sustainable and profitable sector on equal footing with sheep and beef or dairy farming is realised, this event marked an important first step.

“Goat farming is very well placed to capitalise on environmental constraints likely to increasingly impact New Zealand’s wider pastoral farming system.

We believe the industry has a very bright future indeed,” says Mohair New Zealand chair John Woodward.

Drainage Problems?

BY JOANNE SPEECHLY

However, despite having lived in the Kaipara for several years — with nature’s playground on my

doorstep — never before had I seen one of these beautiful creatures in their natural setting.

Fortunately, this situation was recently remedied when I tagged along on a memorable kiwi walk with Department of Conservation staff, contractors and local volunteers.

When we first entered the vast 586 hectare forest reserve and farmland, we were met with a welcome sight for DOC rangers — two recently-dead possums. A clever ‘lunchbox’ system entices the inquisitive possum to open the lid and select a cyanide pill, thus spelling its own demise.

Introduced species, such as possums, rodents, ferrets, feral cats and roaming dogs, have had a devastating effect on natural kiwi habitats, which is why DOC is continually working to control pests

and predators. Ecosystem monitoring and surveys have shown that these measures have had a positive and often dramatic impact on native populations.

Under the forest canopy, the silence is broken by the call of the kereru, as we wait — hopefully — for DOC ranger, Anja Meduna and DOC contractor, Tom Donovan to return with a North Island brown kiwi. We are not let down.

The beautiful, mature female is carefully checked and weighed before being returned to her burrow. The rangers’ passion for their work is evident as I watch, awestruck.

Our kiwi today is in moderate condition and the park’s population is now in recovery, after a period in which her kind were killed by neighbouring roaming dogs and foreign predators.

Unfortunately, around the parameter of Waipoua Forest and adjoining reserves, roaming dogs continue to be a main cause of considerable kiwi

Trounson Kauri Park is a unique mainland island and home to several threatened native species, such as the North Island brown kiwi,

New Zealand pigeon — kereru, native bats and kauri snails.

population decline. Kaitui Reserve, which once held the highest number of kiwi in Northland, now has no signs of kiwi living there.

Trounson Kauri Park however, has recovered significantly and now has one of the highest-density North Island brown kiwi populations in Northland — about 30 to 40 breeding pairs. Since 1995, DOC has managed the area as a mainland island, which essentially, is an intensive ecosystem restoration project, with a focus on learning.

“There are positive measures that the public can take to help address the issue of wandering and problematic dogs, such as kiwi aversion training and simply tying dogs up at night. People could also fence-off bush areas on their farm and do their own trapping for predators,” says Anja.

Kiwi/bird aversion training days for dogs are held regularly by Northland DOC offices and give dog owners the opportunity to talk with kiwi experts and learn more about kiwi and the potential threat their dogs can pose.

“Accidents happen and kiwi sometimes run straight into a dog’s path, which is why aversion training has been developed and it’s offered free of charge in Northland.”

The department’s tireless work has provided a unique opportunity for the public to enjoy a glimpse of Northland kauri forest as it once was.

A walk through the lush, native vegetation of Trounson Kauri Park is a magical experience. By day you can

see kereru, and by night, with patience, the North Island brown kiwi.

Interpretation panels and audio points add to the easy going 30 to 40 minute Loop Track. Guided night walks and school field trips can be arranged.

More information on helping to protect kiwi can be found on the Department of Conservation website www.doc.govt.nz or by contacting the nearest DOC office. To report sick or injured wildlife and other concerns phone the 24 hour emergency hotline 0800 DOC HOT (0800 362 468).

SPEAKING UP FOR KIWI FARMERS

“New Zealand’s got some of the world’s best farmers in terms of converting grass into protein. I want farmers to get the benefit of that and ensure more of the value they create is captured by them.”

Mr Parsons is from a fifth-generation Northland farming family. After leaving Kaitaia College, he spent a year building in Auckland before shepherding in the Nelson Lakes.

He then completed a Diploma in Farm Management at Lincoln University.

In 2001 he bought the family’s 370ha sheep and beef farm from his father. A year later he married Janine, a registered nurse. They now have three sons.

After 12 years at Broadwood he sold the farm last year and in conjunction with his brother and one other shareholder bought a 478ha property

in the Tangowahine Valley, 30 minutes from Dargaville.

Mr Parsons’ involvement in farm politics began when he joined Meat and Wool NZ’s local farm management committee and became active in Federated Farmers. In early 2009 he was elected to the board of Meat and Wool NZ, which subsequently changed its name to Beef and Lamb NZ. Last year he became its chairman.

As chairman Mr Parsons plays a key role in engaging with government

and other industry bodies. “We’re about helping farmers make informed business decisions and promoting their collective interests.”

He says providing good information is crucial to helping his members. “We’re involved in research and development, farmer extension, while our economic service gives farmers credible economic information.

“Public perception that our farmers are rolling in it because of high international commodity prices are

wide off the mark, says Mr Parsons. “The average sheep and beef farm has $3 million or $4 million in capital tied up in it. But the forecast average is $113,000 profit. There are easier ways to make a buck. Farmers work incredibly hard.”

And while farmers have done well in recent years, there is still room for improvement. “The best farmers are really good business people. We want to give farmers better business skills to deliver more productivity.”

He is also aware that farming is becoming a greying industry, with the high cost of farm land making it difficult for young people to buy farms. Mr Parsons agrees the age breakdown of farming is an issue and says Beef and Lamb NZ is holding succession workshops.

“It’s about giving older farmers ways of releasing their equity. Farmers tend to be conservative. When they sell they want to sell it all. We suggest they sell shares. Some younger people can borrow $500,000 to $1 million. That’s enough for a share but not full ownership.”

On the battleground of international trade Mr Parsons is vocal in his support for lower tariffs. “For every cattle beast we slaughter, farmers pay $115 in tariffs. There’s a 40% tariff for beef to Korea, while for Japan it’s 38.5%.”

Mr Parsons concedes middlemen and retailers might not pass on all the benefit of lower tariffs. But he says

experience shows farmers receive two-thirds of the benefits accrued from lower tariffs, while lower prices paid by consumers are likely to increase demand for our products, which benefits all New Zealanders.

“If we had to pay tariffs on lamb exported to the European Union, New Zealand would be $1 billion poorer.” Farmers have made it through global

financial crisis and international economic downturn in good shape. Their prospects therefore look good, with international markets likely to improve still further.

But Mr Parsons says farmers still need to remain relevant and ensure they only produce what their customers want. “There’s no silver bullet. It’s about doing a lot of simple things well.”

Janine and James Parsons with two of their sons Matthew and Joseph with their ewe hoggets on their Tangowahine farm

“Public perception that our farmers are rolling in it because of high international commodity prices are wide off the mark,” says Mr Parsons.

Innovative living beside tradition

At Waimamaku, south of Omapere, the Piwakawaka peak rises steeply between the valley and the west coast. Paul and Susannah Ambler farm here, growing premium maize on the river flats while Piwakawaka’s plateau and rocky slopes support their sheep and cattle.

Paul’s grandparents, Rowland and Johanna Ambler, came to Waimamaku in 1912 and began

dairy farming. The forge of the Yorkshire farmer, blacksmith and wheelwright still occupies a shed next to Paul and Susannah’s new home and until recently the 95-year-old kauri house that had been Paul’s grandparents’ home stood close by as well.

Paul and Susannah raised their three children in the old house. Susannah, originally from the United Kingdom, was

undeterred by the outside bathroom and lack of insulation — “We just put on more layers.”

The Amblers’ expansive modern house looks out over extensive river flats of maize. Paul describes growing maize for grain as the biggest change for the farm.

The family has been growing on contract and supplying Grain Co Northland since 1996. The crop is raised on ex-raupo swamps on heavy yet fertile clay. The land must lie fallow

over winter as it’s too wet to stock. An important aspect of the farm operation is trialling maize hybrids. “We find it very site specific as to which variety does

well,” Paul explains. “We’re vulnerable to the north-easterly funnelling down the valley and so stalk strength determines which hybrid we’ll try.”

In autumn sheep are grazing the flats beside the crop paddocks to control ragwort. “After heavy rain flood tides can be an issue,” says Paul. The other extreme — drought, can also affect the area. 1947 is still remembered as the year the Waimamaku River reduced to a small culvert flow.

A few kilometres south of the river Ambler Road climbs up to the peak above the township. It passes the original home farm of Rowland and Johanna. Paul’s grandfather burnt off bush to run sheep and brought further

land to extend the property. The present day woolshed is the grandparents’ homestead relocated. Across the paddock Rowland’s old cowshed still

stands, sheltered by pohutukawa. He was an innovative farmer and the shed housed early milking machines which would have probably been brought in by sea.

Ambler Road provides access also to pine lots and the farm airstrip which perches above the Waimamaku township. The farm road has all been recently fenced up to about 1500ft — no mean undertaking on the rock strewn land.

From the elevated stock paddocks Mangonui Bluff shows up clearly along the coast. Waipoua forest on the south boundary provides the main shelter for stock here.

The Amblers breed their own sheep and cattle to finishing. The Angus cows are doing well on the good pasture. “The cows calve in January to work in with our maize schedule and when good feed is available,” explains Paul.

The Amblers also make baled silage for stock over winter and sell some on. It’s also up on the high land that they are trialling direct drilling of new grass types into existing pasture.

The family invested in a grain planter and oldest son Rowland returns to the farm from his contracting work for not only the maize planting but also to undertake the grass drilling trials — just one of the ways that Rowland and Johanna Ambler’s descendants continue the tradition of innovation.

Remineralisation: the secret to soil success

It increases the nutrient uptake of plants and it counters the effects of soil acidity, prevents soil erosion, increases the storage capacity of the soil and contributes to the building of precious humus complexes. Plants and trees become highly resistant to insects, disease, frost and drought.

For agriculture: in 1976 John Hamaker spread rockdust on part of his ten acres with no irrigation and his corn produced 65 bushels per acre compared to yields of under 25 bushels from other local farmers. Dr Hamaker estimates that on fully remineralised soil American agriculture could grow four times as much food as it is capable of now with no pesticides or chemical fertilisers.

The key to topsoil restoration is nely ground rock charged with micro-organisms. Basalt and granite are two of the best. Rockdust is the fundamental component of the new topsoil. This rockdust can restore only a fraction of the original topsoil which was formed over many years of geological processes. Consequently rockdust needs to be reapplied to meet ongoing nutritional needs of the plants and micro-organisms.

Many aspects of conventional agriculture impede or prevent soil aggregation (the binding together of soil particles) leaving soil particles susceptible to erosion. The use of rockdust is essential in encouraging the various soil dwelling creatures that are responsible for aggregation, especially worms.

The human race must soon realise that our most important natural resource is topsoil — starvation will be our only future if we allow it to be degraded beyond repair. Under our feet is the resource that can change the world, reduce sickness and ensure food security.

There is an urgent need to rejuvenate the soil and remineralisation with rockdust is the rst step. Introducing micro-organisms into the equation is the next step. The combination of minerals and microbes in the soil is paramount for the survival of all life above the soil.

Agrissentials preferred rock of choice is basalt. In its molten liquid form below the surface of our planet basalt is blending with many minerals. When the molten rock is discharged via volcanoes onto the surface of the planet and has cooled down then it’s ready to be quarried.

Remineralisation has been shown to cause a phenomenal growth of the micro-organisms in the soil.

A D V E RT O R I A L

Agrissentials measure the rockdust for its level of paramagnetic energy. If that level is suitable we then have it analysed for its mineral value. In almost all cases, if the energy level is good then the mineral value is strong. Without getting too technical, we know that good levels or paramagnetic energy help stimulate the multiplication of the micro-organisms, the faster you grow this biota the better the soil operates. Micro-organisms are nature’s soil management team.

Agrissentials are the pioneers of New Zealand volcanic rockdust and have gone one step further by introducing micro-organisms into the mix, creating ROK SOLID full spectrum fertiliser, a live, living energy rich fertiliser set up to remineralise those chemically abused, tired old soils. It is de nitely a good time to change and get your farm pumping and bring back quality production back into the food chain. The consumers are crying out for it. For an independent view go online to remineralize the earth and check out what is happening around the globe.

Agrissentials best on earth fertilisers are remineralising life from the soil up and this month they have a fantastic Fieldays special — everyone that buys this month can go in the draw to win their money back! Enjoying a dream jobFinding kiwi chicks, ferrying students to Limestone Island, building tracks, and measuring geckos are all part of a day’s work for ranger and sole resident of the 93 acre island, Bernie Buhler.

“I had just graduated from NorthTec when I started here working here and this is a dream job. I love the conservation work and the passion of the people I work with.

“I was out of the habit of study, when I decided to do a course at NorthTec, so I started with a year-long certificate course in Conservation Management. I surprised myself, did really well and got a scholarship for more study so went on to complete the Bachelor of Applied Science, majoring in Biodiversity.”

Part of Bernie’s third year study project included field trips to Limestone Island, where he was appointed interim ranger and was later selected for the full time position. He is the island’s fifth ranger.

“This tiny island has a cool history and is a protected site. There is a Pa at the top and the north face was all Maori gardens. The European history dates back to a cement works from 1860 and its old ruins are still standing.“

Massive planting and introduction of native birds, insects and lizards have since been made possible by collaboration between the committee overseeing the island, Friends of Matakohe/Limestone Island, sponsors Golden Bay Cement and Kiwi for Kiwis, Northland District Counciland others.

“The land was grazed bare, so it will take decades to get mature tree cover for birds, but in the meantime we have plenty of exciting and diverse wildlife projects on the go.”

NorthTec is Northland’s largest tertiary education provider, with campuses and learning centres across the region and plenty of flexible study options for online and part-time study. Programmes range

Dairying drives successA key message I

always tell farmers, growers, fishers and foresters around the country is that we need to celebrate our success loudly and proudly. If we don’t, no-one else will do it for us.

That’s why I was proud to attend the Dairy Industry Awards in Auckland recently — a black-tie event attended by nearly 1,000 people. Congratulations to all the winners on the night. There were some inspiring winners like Ruth Hone who became the first ever woman to win Dairy Trainee of the Year. Out of the 11 dairy trainee finalists, five were women.

27-year-old Nick Bertram was named 2014 Farm Manager of the Year, which is a great achievement given he joined the industry with no family background or experience in farming.

Congratulations also to Charlie and Jody McCaig, 2014 New Zealand Sharemilker/Equity Farmers of the Year. In my speech I pointed out to the audience that every hour of every day, the dairy sector earns

another $2 million in exports. It’s the hard work of farmers that pays for our schools, roads and hospitals and I don’t believe you get thanked enough for that.

There is a lot to be proud of. According to Dairy NZ, the productivity of dairy farmers has doubled in the last 50 years. I’m very proud of the efforts farmers have

made to improve their environmental performance, with around 90% of waterways now fenced off from stock.

We’ve also seen big strides forward in animal welfare. Farmers realise they need to be proactive and take the lead on these issues, because there are plenty of critics out there who will take any chance to bash you.

I see part of my job to be an advocate in Parliament and I’ll keep fighting in your corner.

All of us need to keep talking to our urban cousins, reminding them of what we’ve achieved.

We’ve got some very exciting opportunities and challenges ahead of us. The world population is going to reach 9 billion by 2050 and as they get wealthier, they will want more and more of the protein we produce.

To meet this challenge we need to encourage young people into this industry. By 2025 it’s estimated we’ll need another 50,000 new positions filled, and around half of those will require a tertiary qualification.

On that note, earlier this month I launched a new Young Enterprise programme happening in schools across New Zealand. Students are being asked to promote careers in the primary industries to their fellow students, which will really help raise awareness.

Congratulations again to all the Dairy Industry Awards winners — with great people the future looks bright for this industry.

The importance of water for the dairy cowMilk comprises almost 90 per cent water, so it’s not surprising that a cow’s water intake has a major impact on her milk production. The equation is simple — when you provide enough water, cows drink more, eat more and produce more milk.

Increased water intake improves milk production

The amounts of water involved are signi cant. For example, one kilo of dry

matter intake utilises up to ve litres of water. In fact, cows need at least three litres of water to produce a single litre of milk (pasture provides some of this requirement). Satisfying this need is, therefore, a crucial task for every dairy farmer.Make drinking easy and convenient

Cows drink fast — up to 20 litres per minute. If they can’t, their water intake may fall off and their milk yield could suffer. For example, a 40 per cent reduction in water intake can cut milk production by 25 per cent. Cows like to drink when they eat and just after milking. They also prefer a large, calm drinking surface from which they can drink quickly and without stress. This natural drinking behaviour promotes further eating and even more drinking.

Cows like to drink at certain times of the day and are fussy drinkers. Plentiful, convenient and good drinking water, results in healthier cows and higher milk yields. This is a cost-ef cient way to increase milk output.

A way that is often overlooked — optimising water supply.Understand the cows’ needs

Water supply products should meet the cows’ physiological and social drinking requirements. Water troughs should provide easy, convenient access to water, in feed pads, loose housing and pasture. Cows should be able to drink as much as they want and as quickly as they want without having to wait. The water they drink should be fresh, clean and good-tasting. Water troughs should minimise microbial growth, hinder dirt pollution and be easy to keep clean. Durable, well-proven water troughs promote years of reliable, trouble-free operation that you’ll appreciate as much as your cows will.

Hygiene, capacity and accessibility are critical factors for the dairy cows’ health and production. These are all factors that Advance Dairy and Pump consider when designing/installing or maintaining a water system.

Bringing expertise to your doorWith Gypsy week behind us, Northland farmers are settling in to the routines of the winter season, taking care of those all-important maintenance tasks before wet and cold weather put the brakes on outdoor endeavours.

But even the hardiest and most self reliant of farmers know that sometimes the job calls for specialist tools, focused expertise or a little extra manpower. That’s when it’s time to call in the professionals, who are thankfully just a phone call away.

Many of these specialist tradespeople have become household names around the North, covering huge mileage as they visit far-flung settlements to take care of everything from septic tanks to milk chillers and all kinds of jobs in between. With a new focus in the construction

industry and related trades on proper qualifications — and jobs being signed off by legitimate tradies — these ‘on the road’ heroes are more valuable than ever.

On these pages we’ve collected a handy directory of mobile professionals, keen to leap into action at your call and sort your problems out on the farm. You can contact them with confidence, knowing that they have the tools, the team, the technology and the time to fix it — wherever you live and work.

NEW ZEALANDMADE & DESIGNED

Instant contact a realityby Paul Campbell

Gypsy week has come and pretty much gone and rural communities nationwide will be awash with new faces.

‘We’ll never be isolated again’. Then, in 1960 television was introduced and as transmission towers were established, it gradually spread from the cities to the hinterlands.

These days, there is the Internet, and with it, the end of isolation at the tip of our fingers. Contact is instant. A new part for a pump can be ordered in seconds. Medical advice, farm information, stock schedules, homework questions, contractors details, transport services — all are seconds away. And keeping in touch with former friends and colleagues is no longer an issue. Skype provides free, real-time, face-to-face contact across the country.

Thankfully, due to huge advances in communications and technologies, much of the stress associated with moving from one location to another has disappeared. Looking back, it was a different story.

In the early days, news travelled by word of mouth — stuff like, what stock and produce prices were doing. Then along came newspapers, telephones, and railways, and eventually, New Zealand got connected.

City newspapers dropped off by the rural postie, became an important source of information for country folk.

For many rural people, radio was also an important means of contact with the rest of New Zealand. Veteran broadcaster Jim Henderson, recalled his mother saying as she first switched on the radio in their isolated rural home

Rural roads secure futureThe New Zealand road network is vital to rural communities.

It is the link between the economic, social, health and educational sectors and takes farm produce to the international marketplace, making the National Land Transport Programme particularly relevant. The government initiative, developed every three years, is

a planning and investment partnership between local authorities and the NZ Transport Agency, which aims to deliver transport solutions that will help all communities across New Zealand thrive.

Primary industries based in rural communities, such as agriculture, horticulture fishing and forestry contribute over 70% of New Zealand’s

total export earnings and rely on a safe and efficient access roading network.

According to current information, rural roads are generally in very positive condition after a decade of significant investment. The New Zealand Transport Agency has been working closely with local authorities and contractors to keep this going.

More efficient freight movements are a primary objective of the NLTP and the ultimate aim is 4,500 kilometres of state highways and local roads. This will provide significant benefits to the primary sector, as it means much of

the bulk freight carried in rural areas, such as dairy, logs and minerals, can be moved more efficiently, using fewer trips.

The government’s introduction of Safe System and Safer Journeys addresses another serious issue on the nation’s roads — crashes, which has prompted the NZTA to develop the High Risk Rural Roads Guide for local and regional council.

The NZTA is also trialling rural intersection activated warning signs as part of its effort to reduce serious crashes and improve safety at high risk intersections in rural areas.

Ezy Up is easy asIf you’ve got a ride-on mower you’ll know it will need a clean once in awhile.

That especially applies to its underside, which is the part that comes into closest contact with the grass.

And occasionally you want to check the blades and maybe get them sharpened.

But the problem with ride-on mowers is that they are so darned heavy.

Unlike a conventional lawn mower you can’t just pick them up and turn them over.

So, the solution adopted by many owners is to forget it and hope that everything is OK. But that’s dangerous

If you can’t clean the bottom of your mower, grass and debris will accumulate. The blades will have to work harder and will be less effective. If that happens you won’t be getting the best value from it.

The solution is something so simple you’ll wonder why you didn’t think of it yourself. It’s the Ezy Up ride-on mower lift that lifts your ride-on mower, so you can get underneath. It’s simple to operate and conveniently sized, so you can store it in your garage or shed.

What are you waiting for? Go to www.ezyup.co.nz and order today. It’s quick and easy — just like the Ezy Up.

Big features come with small footprint

That doesn’t just count for luxury cars, either — thanks to tractor innovators Deutz Fahr. The man who founded the original Deutz company, Nikolaus Otto, was the inventor of the four stroke engine. That’s quite a pedigree, and it’s one which Deutz Fahr are keeping up with, introducing a host of new features to this year’s radical 110–130hp 5 Series tractors.

These aim to put high output, low emission technology into a smaller package, taking the top line of tractor tech from high-horsepower machines

and making it accessible to the average farmer.

There are three 5 Series models, with 100, 120 and 130hp respectively, all powered by ant eco-conscious common rail turbo diesel, incorporating a very efficient intercooler system for more punch and less ‘thirst’. This includes a catalytic converter system which does not need the addition of AdBlue or Go Clear emission control additives — even under tough Euro regulations.

Tractor drivers can expect an easier day’s work with Deutz Fahr’s new

automatic transmission system as well — with a host of levers now condensed down to a single shifter, just like in an automatic or CVT road car.

Nobody questions the engineering know-how of German automotive companies

Kiwi legend pushes the boundariesby Andy Bryenton

Bruce McLaren’s name is synonymous with speed. From the Circuit De La Sarthe at Le Mans to the CanAm tracks of North America, and the gruelling F1 circuit, his legacy is one of engineering excellence, velocity, and grit.

The Kiwi driver was born in 1937, the son of a gas station owner, and his early life was shaped by the crippling Perthes disease he contracted at age nine, leaving one of his legs shorter than the other. Denied the chance to pursue more physical team sports like rugby, the man who was called ‘fearless’ and ‘an unstoppable force’ by his rivals took to motor racing, in an Austin Seven tuned by his father Les.

By 1958 Bruce was in the driver’s seat at the New Zealand Grand Prix. Aussie racing legend Jack Brabham was so impressed by his performance that he asked Bruce to race for his team, ushering in an era of what can only be called total domination of motorsport by the young man from Auckland

In 1959 he won the United States GP, at age 22 the youngest driver ever to do so. In 1962 he took the ultimate F1 crown on Monaco’s glittering Riviera-side circuit. But it was as a designer and engineer of race cars that he made an even greater mark, developing new aerodynamic techniques — sometimes literally in the pit lane with a pair of tin snips!

Bruce’s untimely death was foreshadowed by the words he wrote for another young racer who lost his life — team mate Timmy Mayer. Bruce eulogized:

‘To do something well is so worthwhile that to die trying to do it better cannot be foolhardy. It would be a waste of life to do nothing with one’s ability, for I feel that life is measured in achievement, not in years alone’.

Tragically, the same words rang true when Bruce’s car lost traction at Goodwood circuit, England, disintegrating on impact. He was only 32 years old.

Even after his death, the legacy of this driving legend has been carried forward in a spirit he would no doubt have appreciated. First, by the formula one team which still bears

his name — and subsequently appended to a range of cars which, like the man himself, have taken on the world’s best and won.

The McLaren F1 was the definitive hypercar of the 1990s, beating all comers in flat out speed, and even putting the multi-million-dollar-developed Bugatti EB110 in the shade. Now the incredible P1 carries on this legacy.

The McLaren M7A of 1968 gave McLaren their first Formula One wins

Nutrition and lameness

A number of readers did respond and I very much appreciate your emails and feedback. I didn’t get any evidence, but I did get some questions regarding the causes of lameness. I will endeavour to cover those questions in my articles but it will take more than just this one. Lameness is a multifactorial problem. Most of us already know that. What are the factors that are involved in this problem?

To make it as simple as I can, I believe that the main issues are nutrition and stress. There are other factors, but if we control the nutrition and stress then we can eliminate a great deal of our problems to the point where we have minimised the issue. These two factors are both broad aspects that need more explanation.

Before we start addressing the nutritional aspects of the problem I have to advise that I am not a nutritionist. I do have some knowledge in this area

but I am by no means an expert. A lot of what I say about nutrition comes from nutritionists that I work with and have a lot of respect for.

Many pasture-fed cows do not get enough effective fibre in their diet, and I am aware that this contradicts what some nutritionists believe. Fibre has a big impact on the health of the corium. Whilst there is nothing in the fibre that is directly involved in the healing process of the corium, the fibre does help with the processes in the rumen, creating a better, more stable, rumen pH.

The microbes in the rumen function better and there will be less acidosis — acidosis being an important factor in laminitis. This can be particularly important when cows are out of the paddock for long times due to milking.

If the cows are fed meal in the cow shed then it may be even more important. Cows gorge themselves when they are in the paddock and starve when

they have been out of the paddock for too long so there is a big pH fluctuation in the rumen.

This is made worse if the cows are getting meal in the cowshed. I am not saying that we shouldn’t feed meal in the cowshed but it is important to know what can potentially happen when we do. I know that it is believed that the fibre content in the grass on our pasture-based systems is enough.

My question would be: “How do we know how much fibre a cow needs?” How do we know what the lowest acceptable pH in the rumen is?

If we only look at some elements in the rumen and just draw our conclusions on that then we may be missing the boat.

One scenario I would like to put before you is how come beef animals on nice lush pastures in Canterbury have haemorrhaging and even sole ulcers?

I can show you beef cow feet with just that. These cows have never been

In my last article I asked you to show me some solid evidence to demonstrate that stones and pushing cows in the yard would bruise the hooves. cause sole penetration and cause white line separation.

pushed, don’t know what stones look like and yet have so called ‘stone bruises’. Of course, there could be other factors like calving, cows being on heat or whatever.

The thing is that the haemorrhage in the hooves is quite constant over the year.

When you look at cows that are being kept in the high country, they don’t have anywhere near the amount of haemorrhage, yet they have a lot more stones to deal with than their counterparts on the flat.

I will continue this subject and endeavour to follow up on those questions in my next article but please keep those emails coming. Email me at [email protected] for further discussions.

Farming and the Budget

The Minister of Finance the Hon Bill English stated when commenting on the budget, that he did not view the budget as steady as you go with a few freebies, but a reflection on New Zealand being able to move forward confidently.

Over the years the government budgets have demonstrated a significant shift in the relationship between government and the farmer, which began in the late 1800s when New Zealand was an emerging nation reliant on agriculture for export income.

In May 1881 under the heading of Bonuses on Colonial Industries, the government offered £500 for the first 25 tons of butter or 50 tons of cheese to be exported. There was a stipulation that the produce had to have originated in a factory operating on the ‘American principle’ of a producer co-operative and was quite different from those of

the butter and cheese dairies in the United Kingdom.

The underlying theme in the government’s budget is that with a government debt of $60 billion the nation will be reliant on New Zealand’s primary industries to provide the export income needed to repay debt.

It wasn’t so long ago that every National government Minister of Finance in presenting the budget acknowledged the value of New Zealand’s agricultural exports and farming subsidies were available for fertiliser, stock incentive schemes and several other incentives. National Prime Ministers the Rt Hon Keith

Holyoake and Rt Hon Rob Muldoon, also in his capacity as Minister of Finance, always expounded the value and the need to support the New Zealand farmer. The 1984 election resulted in David Lange’s Labour government being elected and Sir Robert Muldoon was removed as National Party leader. The Lange government removed all farming subsidy incentives.

The sudden transition from subsidies to a free-market economy under ‘Rogernomics’ caused a number of farmers to lose their farms through the resultant high interest rates — some in excess of 20 per cent, that were charged at the time. As a young farmer I and other farmers struggled financially. Federated Farmers’ leadership of the time embraced the new free-market economy and with others were highly critical of Muldoon’s former monetary policies. 17,000 farmers marched on Wellington protesting against the new Labour government’s policies as being unfair and not even-handed. During this time it seemed ironic to me that those farming leaders who embraced the free-market economy had been responsible for asking for farming subsidy incentives in the first place. While sitting at home one day, I decided to telephone Sir Robert Muldoon at his home. His wife Lady Thea answered and said Bob is in the United States and will be home next week. I told her I was getting a beast processed at the local butcher for them and I wanted

to meet Sir Robert. She invited me to come down the following Saturday. When I arrived at their Auckland home, Lady Thea had just returned from a run. We unloaded the meat and filled the freezer. The freezer was brand new and empty. She introduced me to Sir Robert who I had not met before. Sir Robert asked, why had I given them the meat? It is a wonderful gesture. I replied, it is in appreciation of all the support you have given to farmers over many years. I asked him how come his freezer was empty. He

said no farmer has ever given me a beast before.

I learnt a valuable lesson here and that was, in spite of his generosity to farmers, it didn’t necessarily mean that he received any reciprocal

acknowledgement. I received a letter from Sir Robert and his wife thanking me for the meat, which they said they thoroughly enjoyed and he certainly never forgot, because on a number of occasions after, when I invited him to farmer meetings in Northland, he always obliged.

Today’s National government which was once described as the farmers’ party in gumboots, has clearly come to the realisation that it can no longer simply rely on the rural sector to get re-elected. Bill English’s budget is clearly targeting the young urban voter, the majority of which live in Auckland. Every political party knows that whoever gets the majority of the Auckland vote becomes the government.

THE ONE STOP ALPACA SHOP

The solid market tone has enabled a number of wool growers to sell most (if not all) of their recently shorn wool and allowed a large percentage of wool which was passed-in at earlier sales for failing to reach grower reserve prices, to also be cleared to the trade.

At PGG Wrightson (PGW) we cover all bases with a comprehensive and strategically placed national network of wool representatives, transport hubs, and warehouses, auction centres in Napier and Christchurch, plus a wholly owned wool marketing and export division — Bloch & Behrens NZ Ltd (B&B) — supplying quality wool to a vast range of processors and manufacturers for the production of such items as: luxury blankets and throws, insulation, furnishing fabrics, upholstery, tennis ball felt, duvet inners, hand knotted rugs, machine tufted carpets, machine woven carpets and rugs, livestock covers, ski jackets and babies’ blankets.

A large number of manufacturers who source their wool through the PGW/B&B channel are European based, focussed on high quality retail sales and are mindful of how important on-

‘today’ for wool as it is growing and to be shorn and delivered at a pre-determined date in the future, often between three and nine months from the date of signing the contract.

For spot market sellers, the PGW auction system offers many benefits, particularly in the current climate of dwindling supply, because export industry representatives are able to appraise a wide range of wool

types from the grab sample removed from each bale within a line, which is accompanied by comprehensive test data measured from core plugs of wool, also removed from each bale, and reported by an independent laboratory who has no financial or other interest in the wool itself.

All exporters attend the auction armed with their pre-sale assessments of each line allowing them to make keen judgement of what lines of wool they can or cannot combine to suit their processor orders. This provides vendors with the absolute widest possible

exposure to the market place, due to the expert ability of wool exporters who push boundaries to ensure their wool deliveries are maximised for wool type, and subsequent price is driven by full benches of buyers competing fiercely at every auction.

Post auction invoices, account sale documents, receipt of payment, collection of testing fees, receipt of shipping instructions, branding of wool bales prior to dispatch to wool scours or wool dump facilities, all require expert interpretation and control, and the ‘prompt’ wool payment system (an agreed specific day and time when buyers must pay in full for their wool purchases with cleared funds, and growers are paid) is one many industries would like to emulate.

Negative comment towards the auction system from time to time usually has, in my experience, been suggested by misinformed and inexperienced commentators, the majority of whom agree, however, that supply and demand remain the most effective drivers of the wool market.

With sheep numbers seemingly continuing to decrease in the face of changing land use, never-ending marketing and sales programmes in the global market place via all New Zealand wool exporters, and an extremely low volume of grower stock on hand in comparison to many other years at a similar time — shouldn’t demand be increasing? We hope so.

That’s my view.

going deliveries of quality wool are to their reputation.

Some of these customers are now interested in longer term three year supply contracts which in turn means that PGW can offer some certainty to growers who supply the required wool types.

Over and above the three year contracts are the PGW/B&B fixed price forward contracts, covering a wide range of types.

These contracts have been operating extremely successfully since 2008 offering PGW’s growers a fixed price

Options aplentyThe past month or so has been rather interesting and revitalising for wool prices with the first auction in May strengthening on the back of the obvious supply shortage, but more importantly a resurgence of interest from processors around the globe creating a much welcome and more positive signal to the market place.

Forestry Market ReportAllan Laurie MNZIF Laurie Forestry Ltd

Last month I suggested May CIF settlements in China would be in the order of US$150 per cubic metre for the market indicator A grade. This followed a peak in March of US$160.

and sawmills much more than NZ. There is three months supply of logs sitting on eastern seaboard ports in China meaning all the US$160 logs now have to be sold at much lower levels to domestic customers.

Over the last few weeks in China, in what is normally their highest usage period, average daily consumption levels have been in the order of 60,000 cubic metres. Actually that isn’t too bad for this time of the year. Last year they were running at about 70,000 per day.

Log deliveries from Russia, NZ, Australia, United States and Canada have been a little under that meaning overall inventory has fallen very slightly. However we will need to shrink supply significantly if we are to stabilise the current situation. This will be helped in part by additional vessels heading to India in May and June.

Meanwhile in NZ, the best thing that has happened is the deluge of rain that has slowed forest harvest generally. A most frustratingly expensive situation for those like ourselves now involved in trying to extract logs from difficult to access areas. However the lower volumes being shipped nationally are desperately needed in order to give time for the China market to recover.

My spies are suggesting the domestic market is going well.

Those selling lumber to Asia and Australia are complaining bitterly about the exchange rate. Demand centred on Christchurch is certainly going well at least in terms of volume.

Trying to get the real oil on what is happening to lumber prices is akin to trying to extract a tooth from the mouth of a hen — not easy. One of our domestic customers conceded things were going better but he reminded me you only have to look at the recent closures of five major sawmills in NZ to see things are not all that pretty.

For both log and lumber segments some better spot freight market

opportunities are emerging. In the case of logs, shipping companies are more prepared to negotiate as they see things unfolding in China. In the case of lumber, the imbalance of freight out versus that coming in, is seeing some very sharp container rates on offer. Up to 50% discounts have been quoted recently. For this trade much depends on the ports of load and discharge.

A US$ FOREX rate continuing in the realms of $0.86+ is very unhealthy and certainly debilitating the bottom line for both log and lumber exports. Even those in the corridors of power have admitted the current high exchange

rate is undesirable. We can only hope sometime in the very near future this reality shifts from lip service to something of substance.

Harvest of wind damaged forests, woodlots and shelterbelts in Canterbury continues at pace. Indeed we can now see a small flicker of light at the end of a tunnel which appears to be about September/October. Meanwhile, the good news is the trees are holding on well and little loss is being experienced due to deterioration.

Once again all in all, a more subdued and negative tone this month, but on the back of some very good times in the market indeed. Thus, it has never been more timely to remember — the only way forward for climate, country and the planet is to get out there and plant more trees.

Indeed May settlements have been struggling at US$145 and some commentators have been suggesting US$140 will be the new price in June.In terms of providing some perspectives about this market it is important to remember:

1) The market was significantly over-cooked at US$160. There was nothing more certain than the market going pear shaped when we reached that level.

2) The price settlements in China are controlled by New Zealand companies, indeed New Zealand dominates the volume and pricing mechanisms in the softwood log market in China.

3) The recent price drops are simply a reflection of supply exceeding demand.

4) At the current settlements we are now back to where we were in April/May last year and then we were breaking out the champagne.

In short, the Chinese are not to blame for the recent downward price pressures, rather NZ log suppliers are completely at fault pushing prices far beyond sustainable levels. Indeed the recent price falls will hurt China traders

Tips for planting poplar poles

The winter months of June, July and August are the best time to plant poplar and willow trees.

These trees have been planted for decades to reduce erosion and also help to control nutrient losses and decrease waterway pollution. Their fast growth rate means they provide stability to land and streamsides far more quickly than other species.

Key to their value is the root systems of the two tree species. Poplars produce a network of heavy roots that penetrate well down into the subsoil to hold hillsides together, while willows have fibrous roots that knit and bind together the beds and sides of drains, gullies and waterways.

Unlike older varieties, the latest hybrid cultivars have been bred to remove undesirable characteristics such as heavy brittle limbs and vigorous suckering, and has instead promoted increased pest and disease resistance and improved timber values.

In Northland, ensure that you have obtained your poles during the months of June through to August. It’s best to obtain material from a reputable supplier or specialist nursery that will ensure quality, correctly-identified material.

Early planting will give the plant material the best chance of survival, as this allows sufficient time for a reasonable root system to develop, which in turn will support a good crown of foliage. This is becoming increasingly important in Northland, with prolonged periods of dry conditions through the summer months.

Prior to planting, soaking the butt ends of poles in fresh running water will give them the best start. Also, if you cannot plant immediately, this will keep the poles viable for a couple of weeks, but no longer as your poles will begin to grow where they are!

Poplars are perhaps the best trees for stabilising unstable hillsides and slips. In terms of spacing each situation

is different. However, as a general rule, spacings of 10 to 12 metres are recommended on gentle slopes, closing up to 5 to 6m spacings on steeper slopes.

The correct method and key to ensuring the survival of poles is to plant them into the soil as tightly as possible. The most effective way is to ram them (using a fence post rammer or similar). If you have access to an auger, a pilot hole takes care of a lot of the effort and hard work.

Three-metre poles need to be planted approximately a third of their length into the ground (or at least 70cm).

The regional council’s land management advisers can help with all aspects of poplar planting, from planting plans to supplying quality poles and Dynex tree protectors. We can even loan you a pole rammer.

Calling all shos for a Karikari KlassicIt is time to get excited about next month’s Karikari Kontiki Klassic.

Based at the Whatuwhiwhi Top 10 Holiday Park over three days from July 10, enthusiastic fishers can be assured of the best fishing opportunities the Far North has to offer.

The competition is limited to the first 50 registered teams, who will compete for the title of Karikari Kontiki Champion 2014. The aim is to land the finest bag of snapper, kahawai and other prime species and with excellent prizes at stake, competition will be fierce.

At the day’s end on Saturday, weary fishers will be glad to know that food, music, refreshments, a hot

meal and entertainment are takencare of.

The 2013 competition saw thirty-six teams of four take part in the event, which is sponsored by premier tackle and bait supplier, Kieron Olsen’s Reel Rods.

Fish caught during the successful competition included an eight kilo snapper and an 8.8 kilogram kingfish. Overall winners were Ron Fenwick and Herbie Adams’ H&R Ltd team with a total weight caught of 34.8 kilograms.

The three major suppliers of electric fishing kontikis, Seahorse, Predator and

Sea Dart, teamed up for the event and three lucky teams each won a torpedo, with the main prize of a Seahorse going to Charlie Pou’s Charlies Angels’ team from Manurewa.

Cape Karikari is a unique location consisting of miles of uninhabited white sand beaches off which, the ocean is abound with trophy snapper, kahawai and kingfish. The prevailing offshore winds are ideal for launching powered long lines, the atmosphere is convivial and the camaraderie is intense.

Within 30 minutes drive of Whatuwhiwhi Top 10 Holiday Park, is

the mighty and sometimes wild 90 Mile Beach — a 70 kilometre expanse of ocean surf beach, reaching right to the tip of New Zealand and boasting the best surf casting reputations inthe world.

When the conditions are suitable this beach becomes the alternative venue for the Karikari Kontiki Klassic.

The relaxing venue also boasts a wide range of accommodation from camping and tent sites, through to executive motels. The closest towns are Coopers Beach and Kaitaia, which also has an airport.

50 registered teams will compete for the title of Karikari Kontiki Champion 2014

Fresh water shing funThe Kai Iwi Lakes trout fishing contest is on the weekend of July 5 and 6. The contest is a highlight of the northern freshwater fishing calendar and has been running for approximately 30 years, with regular trout and sea anglers alike trying their luck.

Lakes Kai Iwi, Taharoa and Waikare are a group of three lakes known as the Kai Iwi Lakes, and are freshwater dune lakes 30km north of Dargaville off State Highway 12.

Lakes Waikare and Taharoa are stocked each year with Rainbow Trout fingerlings from the Rotorua hatcheries. Fish and Game New Zealand, Northland Region’s Manager, Rudi Hoetjes says 2000 fingerlings will be released into Lake Taharoa and 200 into Lake Waikare on the May 29.

The earlier releases are designed to take advantage of abundant autumn feed, allowing fish to reach takeable size within six to eight months of their release.

Those fisherman who have not experienced angling Kai Iwi style, should make this contest the year to sample Northland’s wonderful trout and experience Northland’s hospitality says contest organiser Rudi Hoetjes.

Tales of fishing this contest are talked about throughout the angling fraternity and feedback for this year is that two and three-year-old trout out of both Lakes have a great condition factor, which bodes well for an excellent catch for the 2014 contest.

Tickets will be available from McCoy & Thomas Sports and Nola’s Sports in Dargaville, and through Northland Fish and Game, Whangarei, from the June 4,

Peaceful angling Kai Iwi style

2014. Please either email [email protected] or phone 09 438 4135 to purchase these tickets. Tickets will also be available from the fishing headquarters, Lake Waikare from 7.00am on Saturday July 5. Entry fee is $50.00 for adults, $20.00 for juniors (12 to 17 years) and $5.00 for children under 12 years old on October 1.

Fishing commences on Saturday July 5 from 7.00am and closes at 12 noon on Sunday July 6.

Camping at the Kai Iwi Lakes is available by phoning 09 439 4757 or search the internet for the many Bed & Breakfast accommodation close by the Lakes. A BBQ lunch will be provided at the final Weigh-in and prior to the prize giving on Sunday from 12 noon at the Fishing headquarters.

The continued support from all of our sponsors has provided a great variety of prizes for the different section winners.

Although Trout Fishing Season in Northland’s Rivers is now closed, Northland lakes and reservoirs remain open to trout fishing all year round.

DWN launches new business strategy

The Dairy Women’s Network board and chief executive met with nearly 30 regional convenor volunteers in Wellington last month to launch its new business strategy.

The strategy includes a streamlined core business focus, priorities for the next three years, and more support for developing and growing its regional volunteers and groups.

DWN chief executive Zelda de Villiers said working through the new strategy with the board has been the focus for the past four months.

“Our new business strategy sets a clear direction for the DWN over the next three years. It reflects what our members have told us they want and is more aligned with the dairy industry strategy, which was launched last year,” said Ms de Villiers.

Developing and recognising talent and valuing people in the work environment are priority areas for the Network. A shift from national to international recognition is also reflected in the new strategic vision. The Network’s DairyNZ

funded training would be directed into a series of five new modules that will be short, sharp and practical, replacing the existing Dairy Days workshops, and the Network’s regional convenors will be involved in all aspects of developing and delivering the training.

“Our regional convenors are the axis on which the Network operates. In developing our new strategy, we looked at how the DWN can do more to help them develop and grow and how we can better support local training and events.”

Two of the five new modules will be ready by November. They will cover business goal setting, technology usage, animal welfare, employment contract negotiation and human resources.

The Dairy Women’s Network has more than 5,000 members across its 30 regional groups and membership to the Dairy Women’s Network is free.

DWN convenors, board members and staff attend the annual training meeting in Wellington last month

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children.

There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months.

Septi-Cure is Cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down each toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health.

What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes

that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency.

A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition.
