Come InsideI’ve been putting off writing this editor’s note for weeks Generally,
they go from brain to keyboard pretty eortlessly, but this one was a lurching series of bad starts and faltering stops. en came Northern Michigan’s rst dusting of snow this week-end and my mood suddenly changed from trying to squeeze the last dregs of summer from autumn (just one more paddleboard and glass of wine on the beach …) to reveling in the indoor season with its cozy days lled with baking and reading by the re—activi-ties that the homes in this issue just seem made for. Which is not to say that these homes don’t do summer superbly, but with their rich use of color and texture, classic handsome lines and fabulous, traditional kitchens, they winter in warm style.
So come on into the Swy home where you’ll get a taste of what it’s like to snuggle away the winter in a log home on Lake Michigan, or the Marlins’ timber frame where snowakes drift through the trees outside their towering banks of windows. And, nally, there is Suzanne Krauss’s Crystal Lake storybook cottage with its inimitable, elegant style. You may well envy me when I tell you that I visited her on an early December day last year, when a sharp wind blew a spray o Crystal Lake, and the re in her replace cast a sunset-colored glow across her marble oors.

A carefully updated comfy old cottage shares its secret for making Glen Lake memories.
TEXT BY ELIZABETH EDWARDS • PHOTOS BY TODD ZAWISTOWSKI
On a blustery day in 2011, a semi-trailer loaded with the raw materials to frame an entire house wound its way through Boyne City. e driver was lost, looking for the site where Adelaine Construction
was to begin raising a timber-frame home. Meanwhile, snow was piling up to two feet in classic lake-eect fashion. Melissa Adelaine-Supernault, co-owner of the Harbor Springs con-struction company, called the local road commission to ask their plow drivers to watch for the truck. Ten minutes later the semi driver was following a personal escort and a freshly plowed path to the home site.
“at’s just the way it works in a small town,” Melissa says.at small-town spirit is one reason rst-time home build-
ers Chris and Judi Marlin decided to relocate to Boyne City. e couple was at home in Washington, D.C., that frosty day
when the Adelaine crew began construction on a plan that the Marlins had carefully customized with the help of architects at Yankee Barn Home. Chris and Judi were impressed with the company after visiting its post-and-beam model home in New Hampshire. Yankee’s prefab construction system is ideal for winter builds in Michigan, and Adelaine’s background in log construction made the process even more ecient. Beams and wall panels had been assembled in the factory out East, and the structure was enclosed within two weeks. 4

Trusting a contractor to handle a complex project from a distance is never easy, but the Marlins credit the smooth process to Adelaine’s good communication. Melissa was in constant contact with the Marlins, sending photos and solv-ing construction dilemmas long-distance. She had already led the couple through the overwhelming process of choosing materials and xtures.
“I vet out what [the clients] want and set up a realistic budget,” says Melissa. “en I go with them and help them make choices.”
Melissa made sure that selections t the look that the Marlins wanted: a simple Shaker style that serves as an ideal backdrop for their collection of early American and primitive antiques, many of which they use regularly. Flooring of scraped oak and slate-look porcelain set a rustic tone that works with
the exposed wooden beams. By contrast, plenty of natural light and expanses of drywall highlight the wood. Forged metal hardware, pine doors and trim, and simple lighting xtures nish the understated design.
An open plan centers on a double-sided ledge stone replace that’s visible from all of the public spaces on the main oor. Rooms feel generous, connected and warmly inviting. Antique and new furnishings together carry a look of history and loving use. Chris points to the pine green transitional-style leather sofa, its cushions creased and worn from decades of contented lounging, and remarks how he can’t bring himself to replace it
From top: An office nook overlooks the open living and dining area whe

barns. What color befits a barn-style home better than red? Green tri

because a new one “wouldn’t look right.” It’s true—the antiques look at home in the space, and Judi has edited the collection so that it is both functional and beautiful. Anything too polished would upset the balance.
e exterior design appeals through simplicity, symmetry, and picturesque details like a lighted cupola and functional barn doors anking the entrance. Natural landscaping, brick-red clapboard siding, and a detached garage with a hay door give the large wooded lot the look of a gentleman’s farm.
e Marlins are still settling into their new life Up North, but they love the way their home enhances it. Chris, now retired from an executive position with Bloomberg BNA, likes to zip down to the harbor on his retro scooter, where his Grady-White boat awaits on Lake Charlevoix. Judi, a culinary services professional, loves cooking in the generous kitchen with its
deluxe appliances and airy layout. “We’re so happy with how it turned out,” Chris says. “[e design and building process] just went awlessly.”
Melissa explains, though, that this kind of synergy between client and contractor can only happen with mutual trust. “e Marlins had never taken on a project of this complexity. Even after hearing friends’ stories of very dicult build experi-ences with other contractors, they still trusted our team, even from many miles away. ere will always be bumps in the road, but trust, condence and respect between builder and home-owner makes the experience better for everyone.”

Personal, artistic touches are found throughout the home, including paint-
ings and gorgeous furniture and decorative pieces created by their son
who is an artist. Large stones are incorporated throughout the interior,
including in the great room’s fireplace and along the stairs leading to th
second floor. Birch bark adorns the front of cabinets, sides of built-in shel -
ing and as a frame for a large mirror.
“That’s where I first fell in love with log homes,” Phil Swy says as he points to a framed photograph that hangs in an
airy hallway of the Lake Michigan log home he built with his wife, Denise, in 2008. The photo is of a small log cabin on a cherry farm near Northport. The year was 1974, and he came north from his hometown in southern Michigan to visit a college fraternity buddy.
Denise refers to a second photo a few steps farther along the hallway. is one is of a log cabin rental near Northport Point. “We’d spend a couple of weeks a year there for about eight years,” she remembers.
And nally, a third photo, this one of the couple’s rst very own log cabin, built in 1997 and still standing on their property. For years the “giant one-room cabin,” as Phil describes it, played host to countless summer trips and winter getaways for their family of four and their guests. “Our kids used to bring their friends—it was so much fun,” Denise says, recalling a time when 14 kids slept on twin beds they’d set up inside the cabin.
e Swys still use the beloved old cabin as a guesthouse—but their home now is this 3,800-square-foot log masterpiece fashioned with Michigan red pine logs handcrafted by the Traverse City–based Maple Island Log Homes. Designing and building the home was a 17-months-long process—and the culmination of many years of mapping out their eventual move to year-round living in Leelanau County from down-state, where they’d raised two sons and operated a furniture manufacturing business.
Maple Island designed the oor plan tailoring it to the Swys’ lifestyle and their unique piece of Lake Michigan shoreline. 4

Working with the design, the crew at Maple Island went on to select, scribe and notch each log that would be used in the home, afterward transporting them to the home site. Included in Maple Island’s meticulous detail work on the logs was a knowledge of what adjustments to make to accommodate settling—a term that refers to the logs shrinking as they dry over time. “Maple Island basically wrote the book on how to accommodate for settling in log homes,” Dave says.
Once the Maple Island crew had raised the home’s log super structure, Dennis Coburn’s team took over, communicating closely with the Swys on the process. Each Friday, the Swys and the builders even enjoyed a potluck-style lunch onsite together. “We called it Friday Feast,” Denise says. “We had a ball. It felt like a family. We’d eat, have a nice lunch, and then they went back to work. It was the best experience.”
at excellent rapport with a skilled crew meant that the Swys’ vision for their home could be ne-tuned during the construction process. e addition of an extra 18 inches to the ceilings height was one outcome of this collaboration. “High ceil-ings, particularly in the great room and master bedroom, aren’t typical of log homes, Coburn says. “It really makes the home feel so spacious, and it accommodates the higher windows. You immediately grasp this, and the spectacular view of the water, when you walk under the log archway to the foyer and then on to the great room.”
Which brings this story to the Swys’ favorite spot in this home that they had dreamed about and planned for 30 years: two chairs set beside oor-to-ceiling win-dows overlooking Lake Michigan. It’s where they drink their coee in the morning, read and relax during the day, have a drink at night. As Phil says understatedly, “It’s a good place to start and end each day.”

Suzanne Krauss is one of those women who carries style in her very DNA. e kind of person who can take a humble, low-
ceilinged, pine-paneled cottage on Crystal Lake and make it look like it was built for her collection of Japanese and Chinese antique furniture and hand-painted porcelain.
Certainly the cottage, built in 1903, had been a work in progress since the 1970s when her husband, Bert, rst acquired it. He and Suzanne married soon after, and they went to work on the most basic amenities, such as nding a suitable replacement for the slab of stone that had substituted for a kitchen counter, installing a real kitchen sink in lieu of the old-fashioned one that stood on legs, building a bathroom that wasn’t on the back porch …
Besides those baseline xes, Suzanne injected the cottage with a dose of her
indubitable style—replacing the linoleum oor with black-and-white tiles, paper-ing the low ceiling with midnight blue Schumacher wallpaper and outtting the living space with white sofas. Under Suzanne’s style-eye, it all worked perfectly.
When they weren’t vacationing at the cottage, the Krausses were living in Japan, where Bert was a college counselor at the American School (and where Suzanne had plenty of opportunity to hone her collecting skills!). After Bert’s retirement, the couple moved to Crystal Lake for the majority of the year. After Bert’s passing in 2009, Suzanne continued on with the full, active life the couple had established in which she’d become known for her won-derful dinner parties on the back patio—parties where the table was always set with antique blue-and-white Asian china.
Still, her children worried about her climbing up and down the steep, narrow
cottage staircase to access her bedroom. But how to make an antique cottage aging-in-place friendly? Enter architect/builder Bradley Wheeler who solved the problem with a simple elegance that matched his client’s style and belied the obstacles he had to work around: Suzanne wanted an addition, but any addition would have to be squeezed between the septic eld and the side setbacks.
In the end, Bradley connected the house to a backyard summer guesthouse (once a carriage house) via a wide, natu-ral light-lled hallway that runs 22 feet from the back of the house then doglegs another 10 feet. Completely renovated, the former guesthouse is a tightly insu-lated master suite and laundry area. e bedroom is not large, but it is perfectly appointed with a cheery gas replace that, combined with an air-to-air heat pump, oers Suzanne zone heating.
Suzanne’s flair for interior design shines through in the upstairs be -
room where she fuses fine Asian antiques and textiles with the co -
tage’s rustic paneling. By painting the old beadboard cabinets in the
kitchen black, Suzanne turned them into a dramatic backdrop for her
Asian original porcelain.

Beautiful windows and four skylights keep things bright and airy.
With his signature attention to detail, Bradley matched the trim and window-casing color in the addition to the original home so that it all feels seamless. Bradley also installed 32-inch-wide doorways that, along with the 4-foot-wide hall, make the addition wheelchair and walker acces-sible, if the need for either arises.
A bonus is the way the addition enfolds the patio—turning it into an intimate
courtyard that has kicked up the ambi-ance on those terric dinner parties that Suzanne throws. “It feels totally private now and seats 20 people,” Suzanne says. “It was brilliant. He did an excellent job of matching the new to the old.”
True to her stylish MO, Suzanne made a bold, elegant ooring decision that perfectly unites the original part of the cottage with the addition: she had white, marble oors installed throughout the entire rst oor. While the marble
is a stately backdrop for her museum-quality pieces, Suzanne says it is very livable—cool in the summer, comfort-able enough in the winter for bare feet and all but impregnable to foot trac.
As he did with the entire project, Bradley helped guide Suzanne through the ooring decision, explaining to her, she recalls, that since the marble all would come out of the same vein, she needed to order all that she wanted at one time—or she’d never be able to match it. Suzanne says that that kind of attentivenes—even in a project that is rela-tively small in comparison with most of Bradley’s work—was indicative of the entire process. “I can’t say enough about Bradley,” she says. “He is a fantastic man to work with—right on it all the time. He listens to what you want and makes it even better.”
