SOCIAL EVENTS
Campfire Soiree’ at Muntalunga Park
ALL BRITISH DAY SOIREE Saturday 18th June 2011 by Joe Pannia Little did I know, as the X300 Sovereign slid down our driveway over ten piles of scrub turkey droppings for the twenty odd kilometre drive south along the Bruce Highway to Craig and Virginia’s Muntalunga Park, that I was going to be dobbed-in to write this. Since our annual Soiree evening was so long ago and I’m starting to suffer from old timer’s disease, half of this story is going to be inaccurate and the other half will be fiction. Without photos and notes I’m buggered. Don’t worry it will be also short. The club decided many years ago that it would be a good idea to have an event on the night before All British Day so we could have evenings out with members who come in from out of town. This year attendance was about forty - the same as last year. Several members from the Roma Restorers Club were there with some vintage vehicles, including a Rolls Royce which was a good addition for the ABD. We don’t usually have a big late night of debauchery since members need to be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed the next morning to set up and display cars at the ABD. The BBQ around the campfire has become a tradition now and Chris and I absolutely look forward to it. It’s just like camping in the old days but even better since someone else - namely Reg, cooks most of the food which the club provides, and you don’t have to sleep in a tent. This year we had damper, corned beef, roast and vegies cooked in the camp oven – very tasty! That was great Reg. Craig supplied the usual road kill of roo, emu and croc – that was great if you were a good cook - it was cook-your-own. Ladies brought desserts – Chris made a tiramisu and put most of my bottle of 1970’s port in it. So anybody who overindulged and drove home was over the limit. Don’t say you didn’t taste the alcohol!
Page 5
Sitting around a campfire is great on a cold winter’s night. Some head gear is handy since a heavy dew can still drench your hair and make you ill. This year the Yasi debris provided ample fuel for the fire. Craig piled about two tonnes of wood on it during the night. JCCNQ is now on the Julia’s list of big polluters and with the carbon tax at $23/tonne a certain Daimler driver may be getting a bill for $46 which the club might have to pick up if we want Soirees held there again. By about 9PM we all had to vanish. I’d had a few beers and half a bottle of red so I definitely don’t remember any more except that the Jags were shiny and the ABD parking signs I have been putting up for the last six years, which nobody knows about were ready also. You might be more enlightened about the night’s events by the photos that Marcia puts in the newsletter. Thanks to everyone who helped with the set-up and thanks to Craig and Virginia for the great venue. by Joe Pannia
A Short note from the Editor
I thoroughly enjoyed my first outing at the Soiree, great place & atmosphere, great people and
great food.
(Looks like Reg is a man of many talents, he can fix Jag’s …… and cook)
It is a big commitment to make one’s home available for any function, and Craig & Virginia’s
efforts and hospitality are very much appreciated.
Many thanks Craig and Virginia, and I hope I will have the opportunity to attend again, only
next time I will arrive a little earlier to make the most of a lovely get together.

ALL BRITISH DAY
What a great Day It started off quite cool but by 9.30 am the sun was out and everyone had shed those heavy
jumpers. There was a great turn out of vehicles 2 Rolls Royce; Jaguars; M.G.’s; Austins; Rovers; Bedfords; and
two Morgans plus Triumphs. There were restored Vintage bikes plus The Dennis Fire Engine which was
spectacular with all its shiny brass fittings. Along side this was a restored 1927 Swallows Swift. The Stationary
Engine group put on a great display with their working machinery. Congratulations to all participants for a
terrific display.
We had the Pied Piper Ice-cream Man visit us along with Miniature cars, Allan’s slot cars, British Memorabilia,
plus Wings & Wheels.
For the first time Jaguars outnumbered the MG’S 28 to 22.
Spectator crowd was down due to a mix-up with the early model Holden Club’s booking and then holding their
event on the same day as us.
Also the Bulletin failed to print our story after Glenys and I spent the morning having photos taken of our cars.
Once again 4TTT was on the job with fantastic music and there was good British Tucker from the ladies in the
canteen, thanks to everyone.
Page 7
Our members from the Tablelands were all there also Harvey & Kay who we hope will become members.
While on the subject of potential members Jim & Julia Anderson & Garry Robshaw look like signing up.
Joe & Sue Morrissey have left Townsville for the Canberra area with Joe’s restored S.Type, best wishes to Joe &
Sue.
Our thanks to Shannons who once again donated the trophies.
Geoff Hinspeter won both car & best motor bike with his Ariel
and his red MG.
The JCC trophy for best display went to Frank & Adrian Cerutti owners of the lovingly restored 1927 Swallows
Swift
.
I was unable to contact Jim Lewis prior to the event but luckily Jim ran
into a friend who had a flier with the information and Jim arrived with
his Mk7 saloon and his bright XK140. >>>
Frank & Glenys from Mt Isa brought
along their lovely E Type plus “Lily”
<<XJ6 Series 2. New members Ray &
Julie Zapparoli attended their first ABD
with their well presented XJ6 Series
One.
Our Northern Members started to drift away around 2.30 as they had a 4-5 hour trip ahead of them but we do
thank them for coming the distance.
Craig cut things fine getting his Daimler registered on the
Friday before the event, washed and polished after many
months spent in the shed with the peacocks .
Page 8
Brendon and I had the task of judging the vehicles with Brendon making the final choice. It was a difficult task
for Brendon considering the quality of the machines on display and we thank him for a great job.
David & Linda made it home with a couple of days to spare after their caravanning trip around the Murray River.
Dave was able to bring along his Jaguar for display.
Thanks once again to all the people who participated in our All British Day and we look forward to seeing you all
again next year.
Cheers, Reg
