We had the privilege of attending the 5155 National Square Dance Convention in St. Paul, MN this past June. What a p-eat experience! You have the opportunity to meet and dance with people from all over the world. There's so much to do and see, and the dancing is endless. After your first convention, you find you want to go again and again. To all you new dancers, put this on your list of square dancing things to do.
We had the opportunity to speak with square and line dancers from different parts of the country. We found that they too are experiencing a major decline in attendance as well as difficulties attracting new dancers. The major question: what to do? On the positive side, we were reminded that we are most fortunate to have such great callers in our general area, and we should not take that for granted.
It's more important than ever to support our local callers as well as all the clubs in the NNJSDA. We were most pleased to have 10 completed 2001-2002 Raid Program forms returned this year. Those clubs will receive a reduction in membership dues as a result of getting out there and having fun. Those who completed "One Square is Fair" at NNJSDA dances will receive an even greater reduction in their dues.
We want to thank all the dedicated dancers who have agreed to serve on the Board and welcome this year's new members. Your hard work and dedication are appreciated. We'll try to make it fun along the way and not crack the whip too hard.
We appreciate input from you, the dancers of the NNJSDA, and welcome constructive criticism_ Remember: you make up the Association, we are your leaders. While we realize that we cannot please everyone, it is our job to grow and improve where we can. Let us hear from you. I lappy Dancing! Hope to see you in a square soon.

Congratulations to our own Betsy Gotta_ She was recognized and presented with a plaque for calling at 40 consecutive National Square Dance Conventions. She was a teenager when she called at her first convention. Most of us can't even imagine dancing for that many years. Of course, those of us who know Betsy personally know how much she contributes to square dancing and how hard she works to promote and sustain the activity_ Congratulations, Betsy!

One Liner for your club advertising. Looking for Exercise that is FUN?
Dear Friends,
I want to thank all the clubs that participated in the surprise party on April 14
celebrating my 50 years of square dance calling. It was so good to see so many old
friends. A great number of them went through the square dance classes that I taught.
A big thank you to all the clubs that prepared a quilt block. Jayne Koch and Mary
King made them into a beautiful handmade quilt. I really appreciate all the work they did putting it together. It has a place of honor on my rcc room wall.
Thanks again for all your good wishes. Remember: 1 wouldn't have this honor if it wasn't for you dancers. It's been a fun 50 years.

FAMILY DAY AT GREAT ADVENTURE "Family Day at Great Adventure" on June 8th, sponsored by the Square Dance Council
of New Jersey, was a huge success. We had 109 fun-seeking individuals pre-registered, and by 2:00 PM our table closed with 152 registrants, thanks to the beautiful weather and our hard-working committee.
Mark Franks and Dan Koft called a total of 5 hours over 4 dance sessions at a perfect location. The new covered stage with a wood floor was located between the water ski and dolphin shows, a very well trafficked area. We never had less than three squares dancing, and at one time we even had 5 squares when guests joined us. Many favorable comments were received from dancers and guests alike. Our event gave square dancers a chance to dance and perform in front of family, friends, and park guests. Everyone also enjoyed the safari, rides, games, shows, and concerts throughout the day. Our fun day didn't end until the fireworks display at 10:30 PM.
We extend a big thank you to Jan and Louis Thompson, Registrars and Publicity Coordinators. Jack and Pam Tomchick, Treasurers, and callers Mark Franks and Dan Koft for jobs well done. We also thank all the dancers who supported this event, without whom the day would not have been such a success. We hope you all had a GREAT ADVENTURE.

DISABILITIES AWARENESS Lakeland Squares presented an all-day program for Reilly Middle School, Elizabeth
on June 10 as part of the school's disability awareness education program. Five classes of approximately 50 students per class participated.
Monte Montagnino, Lakeland Vice President, is a physical education specialist for the New Jersey Commission for the Blind. He spoke to the students about various disabilities, highlighting how blind or visually impaired students participate in school and physical education. His wife Janet, who is blind, demonstrated how she deals with a tiny degree of vision and answered questions about how she survived in school.
Students were given simulators (specially modified dark glasses) to create a degree of vision impairment. Some volunteered to wear the simulators and try to play table tennis. pickle ball (using a large whiffleball with a bell inside), balloon badminton, or beach ball volleyball. Then everyone squared up with six Lakelanders and several school staff members filling any gaps. Pal Johnson, our caller and teacher, taught several basic calls. Two, then four, then every dancer in each square put on simulators and helped one another as they danced to Pal's calls. Everyone had a chance to comment at the conclusion of each class.

Al'e'Mo Squares is entering its 25th year of existence in 2003. We are planning
an elaborate program to celebrate this
milestone, In the meantime, we continue to do what we do best: have fun and do good
works. On June 5, we did a demo for the National Cancer Survivor Day program at the Brooklyn V.A. Hospital. Twenty-seven members of the club attended. On June 17. we
had two squares at a demo we performed at Methodist Hospital. We had fun and the
patients enjoyed it. We have to give thanks to Don and Dot Coy for all they do to enable us to do this important work. More often than not. they do these demos gratis. We also
have to thank our wonderful members who always volunteer their services for these causes. They give unselfishly of their time.

Belles & Beaux is on the rebound! Our I/ membership rolls were augmented in April
when 20 new dancers graduated from our two classes. We had a great turnout for our Lemonade Social dance in July, and it looks promising for another successful class in the fall. Our thanks to club caller
Fran Wadel and to head angels George Egan and Jackie Pronovost for bringing these
new dancers into the fold. Under the enthusiastic leadership of our co-presidents, Billy Flynn and Linda Millian,
the club has had a successful year in many areas. We achieved our goal of raiding every Mainstream club in the NNJSDA. thanks to our raid chairman. Ed 'Tripp. Rusty and Richard Ball engineered another successful Mystery Bus Ride, on which we enjoyed a day touring down by the shore and raiding the Middletown Ramblers. Linda directed another fun-filled Murder Mystery Dance, at which club members acted out a Hillbilly Wedding story. The program drew a great turnout from Belles & Beaux and neighboring clubs. A dozen club members marched in the Fourth of July Parade in Glen Rock, stopping to demonstrate a few steps when we could find a little shade. We had a great time despite the sweltering weather.
Fran Wadel, Rusty & Richard Ball, and Karen & Jim Berrie represented the club at the National Square Dance Convention in St. Paul, MN. They were among nearly 9,000 dancers from around the nation and the world who gathered for a weekend of fun and fellowship.
Our plans for the fall include a special dance on October 5 with our former club caller, Dick Mazziotti, returning from Virginia. The dance will lake place at 8 p.m. at Central School. Tickets arc $5 in advance and $7 at the door,
Belles & Beaux is psyched for another great year!

On June 29, Al'e'Mo participated as co-hosts at the "One Square is Fair" dance. We had at least one full square in attendance. In June we also had a square dance weekend sponsored by the Coys and Mickey McFarland. With 28 dancers, AFe'Mo had the largest representation of any club. Everyone had a great time, and we are anticipating the next one in the winter. Our spring workshops were well attended, and we look forward to another great year ahead led by our leaders, Vincent and Caroline.

Our last dance for the season was June /iv

12, and it was our famous Ice Cream t, Social. We welcomed our new graduates,
and a great time was had by all. Fifteen
Grover members joined us for our last raid of the Cieve, fand
Schoo 1 year: dinner followed by dancing at Al'e'Mo Squares. As usual, we enjoyed the food, dancing, and companionship of our fellow dancers.
We are sorry to report that one of our members had his car stolen and our banner was in his car. It would he great if all the clubs would raid us so we could till up our new banner. Nothing could replace what we had over the years, but it would certainly be a start. We wish we could replace his car just as easily.
Cross Trails did their summer demo again this year at Caldwell College. The kids really had a good time. and this year there was air conditioning.
Don't forget we dance at Grover Cleveland School in Caldwell, and our Open House will he Tuesday, September 10. Hope to see all of you at Cross Trail Squares this year on the 2nd and 41h Wednesday of the month with a Plus workshop at 7:30.

As the summer sounds fade into the
past and the darkness shortens our days,
our toes start tapping to the square dance
rhythm. We'd best start marking our
calendar to make sure we get to all the
dances we would like. Sunday evenings
with Betsy Gotta are a fun way to start your week. harmony is continuing the Sunday fun program with Betsy leading us
through the "dance by definition." Ask any of those who have been there; it is a fun
evening. Look for our ad elsewhere in this Grand Square. Check the flyer tables at the dances you attend; see who is having classes. 'Then, tell
your non-dancing friends that you are bringing them to an Open Ilouse or Introduction to
Square Dancing. The most effective way to get new dancers is to bring them to a class.

We had a number of square dancers
traveling this summer. The Kochs went to
New I lampshire, and the Elliotts attended
the National Convention in St. Paul. MN
where they enjoyed the twin cities. The
Richards visited CA. riding from San
Francisco to San Diego. while the Mundys
toured New Orleans and Gay Burgiel went sailing in Belize. Our dancers are always
finding interesting ways to enjoy their summer.
We had a very exciting 25th annual dinner dance, chaired by Peg & Fred Bailey. on
May 4. Our many enthusiastic dancers enjoyed the fantastic calling of Jim Snyder. We
had many talented members work very hard on decorations for the dance and crafts for
the Chinese Auction. We are pleased everyone's efforts were so well received.

973-361-3236 We ended the spring season with some
well-attended dances thanks to all of our visiting club member friends. Our final dance of the season was a pot luck dinner followed by the calling of fun-loving Bob Mitchell and cueing by Ellen McCabe -- a great way to end the season! Cheers to
outgoing presidents Ruth and Frank Pagano for their leadership the past two years. New presidents Arlene and Tom Simansky had a meeting at their home with all the
officers. Ideas were discussed for next year's program, including ways to entice new dancers to square dancing. A tasty barbecue followed the business portion of the meeting with Tom presiding as chef.
On June 11 the Ironia Reelers danced a demo in Chester for the Fifty Plus Club with Len Antinsen calling. Hopefully, demos will show others the fun we square dancers have and encourage people to take lessons.

Our ice cream social was a huge 110A41...y success and deliciously added pounds to
F.5i our squares. We finished the season with --1..entt 2° our traditional covered dish dinner.
Everyone brought his or her favorite recipes. and that added more pounds.
We did complete our entire raid program for 2001-2002 and welcomed those clubs that raided us. The Rangers entertained the residents of Sussex County when they performed a demo at the Sussex County Fair. a great opportunity to publicly promote square dancing. We're hopeful this form of public promotion will assist all the clubs in recruiting new people for our classes.
The entire club sponsored a picnic of fun and fellowship for John & Leslie Schwenker when they visited us from South Carolina. Our club continues to miss those who are sick and shut-in. Fred Lutot (fluto12002gyahoo.com ) 973-579-5194

Many people will remember Gil Brundjar, the blond guy from Ohio who danced with our clubs when his work brought him to New Jersey for 4-6 weeks at a time a few years back. Your reporters met him at the Ohio Convention in May.
He is not coming to NJ any more, but sends greetings to all of you in every club where he danced.
We also attended the National Convention in St. Paul, MN in June. Of particular interest - the Live Music Hall, a hockey rink, was devoted entirely to Mainstream dancing for all four nights. and the hall was PACKED! Does that tell us something?
In May, we held a surprise birthday party for Lola Patterson featuring "oldies" tunes throughout the evening. In June, we supported a middle school program to develop student awareness of visual disabilities (see separate article in this issue). We look forward to participating in the Parsippany Day Street Fair in September.

In Memory of Pete Malivuk We mourn the passing of Pete Malivuk on July 9, 2002. He square danced for over 30
years, and was a member of the Colonial Dancers, several Long Island clubs, Lakeland Squares, and the Garden State Square Dance Campers.
Pete was a member of the Long Island Callers Council and Callerlab International. He always ended his dances with "G-d Bless America." Many groups enjoyed his fun level one-nighters. He loved to tell his "above board" jokes and was friendly to all. Pete was a wonderful ambassador for our activity and thought everyone should try square dancing. 34 Sig Eisele

Northern New Jersey Round Dunce LeaderssCouncil
We decided to write this article together. This is Deanne's last message as Moderator
of the NNJRDI.0 and Jim's first message as President of the CCNJ. Although Jim is a square dance caller and Deanne is a round dance leader, we have
many things in common. We both have a strong and clear desire to give you, the dancers,
the best dancing experience we can. We believe that every leader in each organization
feels the same way. Each summer the CCNJ sponsors four dances for the new graduates. All dancers from
all clubs are invited to attend these dances. The callers volunteer their time for these
events. Unfortunately, the dances are not well attended. We invite the clubs' class
coordinators to contact us so we can work together to give your new graduates what they
need. Please remember that you too were new dancers! It is very important that we support
and dance with the newest members of our community. Perhaps dancing at a new
graduate dance is not as stimulating as dancing with your home club. However, the
people with whom you would he dancing are the future of your home club. If they do not
feel welcome. they will not continue on to join your clubs. Should the Northern New Jersey Round Dance Leaders' Council also give dances
specifically for new round dancers? We'd like your opinion. The NNJRDLC gives two dances each year (the Spring and Fall Festivals of Rounds).
Both are very well attended. However, if you have any suggestions, please let one of the
leaders in the council know. We both hope that you all had a wonderful summer and that this fall finds you ready
to dance, dance. dance! Jim Emory, President a the CCNJ

973-226-5837 Mountain Squares continues the A2
tradition at the First Presbyterian Church in Whippany, beginning another season "in the black." Our raid program was completed, our officers are remaining, and our slight increase in fees lust year was effective. Our loyal following produced 5 or 6 squares at our pot luck finale. Millie and Ron Nitzschc did what they are famous for: hosting the affair complete
with a magnificent cake from Joe Landi. It is always our hope that the Nitz_sches can stay longer in the fall before their annual trek to the Keys.
We have warmly welcomed new members Margaret and Carl Brignola to our roster. They started the summer with a new motor home, so we'll fill you in cm their travels next time.

718-448-9761 Many thanks to the other members of
the Executive Board who volunteered to serve yet another year. We had a very special visit in April from 56 South Carolina dancers. Barbara Harrelson, whom many of you know from the Myrtle Beach Balls, organized a bus trip to NYC to show support for our great city after 9/11. After dinner at a local restaurant with a number of Richmond Dancers, they
enjoyed a wonderful dance called by Ralph Stapenell. To add additional merriment to the evening, we were raided by Mountain Squares and Kittatinny Rangers. It was a wondrous night! Please join us sometime this season as we celebrate our 50th year.

973-427-4745 Last year brought many changes to
Spinning Wheels. Bob Robinson, our club caller, passed away in March, and we miss him very much. Some of our members have been ill and have not been able to return to dance: Judy & Joe Warnsley, Jean & Pete Kilzer, Marie & Henry Shiman, Barbara McKenn & George Haberberger. We think of them often and send them all our love and prayers.
On a happier note, we have had visitors from Germany and Oregon, and many dancers from Rockland Promenaders dance with us regularly on Monday nights.
On June 1, we had a very lovely picnic at the home of our president with delicious food, most of it made by Dolores's 93 year old mother. She also continues to bake a cheesecake for us for each Monday night dance. and we thank her very much.

At our April Graduation Dance, we enjoyed the lovely singing voice of caller Sandy Corey. Our best wishes to Sandy for a speedy recovery from surgery the following week.
Congratulations to Fanny and George Meyer upon celebrating their 55th wedding anniversary in April! Tell us your secret, Fanny and George. Could it be that square dancing has helped contribute to the longevity of your marriage? We also congratulate Lucille and Richard Behrens on the May marriage of their daughter. Best wishes to Joan Schierlitz and to Mindy Scher, each of whom welcomed a new baby granddaughter in May. We are deeply saddened by the passing of Judy Wamsley on July 18, and we extend our deepest sympathy to Joe and their family. We extend our sympathy to Maria Hoernlein on the recent loss of her father. We welcome Gloria Kushner back to the dance Boor after her knee surgery in April.

201-261-3838 Tenakill Twirlers concluded the 2001-
2002 season on June 21 with our annual Moonlight on the Hudson dance at the Alpine Boat Basin. After a dark, delayed beginning to the evening (the Parks Commission had not turned on the power and lights), the dance turned out to be delightful. Indeed, an amber moon rose to smile down between the branches at the dancers as they pranced to the calling of
Roy Leber and the cueing of Nick Raspa. We were pleased to have quite a few new Mainstream graduates in the squares. President Gloria, making a good recovery from her surgery of early May, presided over the event.
Hearty congratulations to Fanny and George Meyer who celebrated 55 years of marriage in April. Fanny and George have been square dancing for 22 of those 55 years and have long been loyal and active members of Tenakill Twirlers, as well as of several other clubs. Congratulations are in order, too, for Sally and Mike Schein, who welcomed their first grandchild, a 7 lb. 10 oz. bouncing boy, in June.
Hope you all enjoyed a fun-filled summer with family and friends.

While at the Paper Mill Playhouse in July to see "My Fair Lady," we visited the gallery upstairs where hundreds of new miniature paintings were displayed. Among those treasures was a tiny watercolor of the First Presbyterian Church in Whippany_ Its lovely white colonial architecture shown in profile reminded us of the many years that Mountain Squares has been privileged to dance in its Parish Hall. Dick Jones was our caller when our club moved its locale to Whippany in January 1976. Joe Landi has been calling for us there since 1982. Ad on page 42 Isabelle & Doug McCabe 973-226-3955 44

After a lively and productive session, an exciting and diversified program was planned for the coming year. We will continue our format of offering Mainstream/Plus dancing on the second Saturday and Plus dancing on the fourth Saturday. Both nights will continue to feature round dancing as well.
The season will open on Saturday, September 28 with Randy Page calling Plus and Nick Raspa on rounds. October 12 will be our first Mainstream/Plus dance. A special invitation for this dance will be sent to all newly graduated Mainstream dancers. A reduced entrance fee will be available for the new dancers. Watch your mail if you qualify! We also invite all to come and join us for, what looks to be. an exciting and exhilarating dance season!

Our club members had a great time at the SDCNJ 's Family Day at Great Adventure, and we hope this will become an annual event. What a great way to introduce people to the fun of square dancing! Irene & Jim Novak and Mary & Bob King enjoyed the National Convention. Next year, Oklahoma!

Hunterdon Flutterwheelers Continued from page 26 July and August saw many of our members volunteering to help the Ilunterdon
County Park System with the "Music Under the Stars" program. The music was great
and we had the opportunity to do a good deed. We also enjoyed a summer picnic at the home of Peg & Fred Bailey and a barn dance at the home of Meryl & Bub Campbell. The combination of good friends and good food was a real winner.
liope to see you all on our beautiful wooden dance floor now that we're back to our regular dance schedule. Peg Bailey (pegbaikv(c4ati.com) 908-537-2668 Ad on page 32 57
