1 We would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. We are off to a great start with lots of activities and training opportunities. The leadership team is working hard to develop our new website along with streamlining our communications to specific email groups. We will keep you updated as changes occur. Membership The Northern Ridge District is proud to announce its newest unit, Cub Scout Pack 285 chartered by Amana Academy in Alpharetta. Led by Eagle Scout Jason Blalock who is serving as Cubmaster & dad of a Tiger Cub. They conducted their first official pack meeting on Friday Dec. 13. It started with a meeting with two moms of first grade age boys back on August 8, 2013 followed by many emails and phone calls and then onto a meeting on September 24th with the proposed Key 3 and a YODA, and finally culminating with the formation of the Charter by Amana Academy in November. Thank you to the following people who brought the Pack to life! Cubmaster Jason Blalock, Committee Chair Steve Jackson, Charter Organization Representative Liz Lambert, Charter Executive Jaleel Ehab, Tiger Den Leader Sheila Boyd, Assistant Tiger Den Leader Melissa Jackson, and Treasurer Melissa Blalock. Roundtable is an opportunity for all leaders and interested parents to learn more about the activities of the Northern Ridge District as well as the scouting program. Roundtable is a great place to meet other Adult Scout Leaders, District Leaders and District Commissioners and to learn from their experiences. District Banquet We will have separate district banquets for former Chattahoochee and former Milton Scouters and next year we will have one banquet for Northern Ridge. Chattahoochee District Banquet – Scheduled for Saturday, January 25th from 7:00 – 8:30 pm. This will be held at Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church in the basement of North Sanctuary. Northern Ridge Spring Camporee – April 25 – 27 – BASR Attention all Troops and Crews, the initial planning meeting for the first Northern Ridge District Spring Camporee will be held at the District Roundtable meeting next week, Thursday January 16th at Alpharetta Presbyterian Church at 7:30 PM. All troops and Crews in the district should send one adult and one scout for the meeting. At the meeting we will discuss the proposed format and collect ideas for the theme for this inaugural event, along with area for troops and crews to volunteer to help in running the camporee.

Scout Sunday – February 2nd / Scout Sabbath February 8th The Boy Scouts of America annually celebrates its founding on February 8, 1910, based on the program started by Lord Baden Powell in England on August 1, 1907. Scout Sunday was added to the Scout celebration in the middle 1940s. For the upcoming year, according to the national BSA calendar Scout Sunday will be celebrated February 2nd and Scout Sabbath will be February 8th. The tradition was started to make people in House of Worship’s aware of Scouting, and to allow Scouts to live out their "Duty to God" pledged each week. The Scout Law says that a "Scout is Reverent" and the Scouts of all ages promise to do their "Duty to God". These values strengthen youth character in their family, community and faith.

There are two opportunities to attend, both times at the VSC. While the Camp Card discounts are a great plus, what you’re really selling is character and a better community. A Scout is Reverent (cont.) The purpose of this activity is to assist the Chartered Organization House of Worship’s who are not presently celebrating the anniversary of Scouting with their Scouting families and add a "Scout" service. House of Worship’s who already celebrate the lives of their Scouting families may find the information helpful to enhance their present liturgy. Pre-plan - An overview of the recommended planning activities.

Secure approval from your contact with the House of Worship Work with the Planning Committee Music (Based on the readings and the season) Calendar event and pre-meetings Many House of Worship’s have Scout/Scouters in units outside of the area

Advertise - Notify your Chartered Organization Representative on Scouting/Contacts within the House of Worship Scout Uniforms (Shirt, Pants, and/or Hats) Recognitions to be presented Role of the Scout/Scouter: Altar servers, Door Greeters, Lectors, Musicians & Singers

Scout Activities - Display Area Highlight activities that are done by Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Crew Members. Pictures, drawings, news

articles for display. Scouts and Scouters should be in their dress uniform. Have cookies and/or coffee/water available

Time Outline Set date of Observance with Unit Leaders, Chartered Organization Representative and Sponsors of Scouting Begin planning meetings 6 months prior to the event Submit announcements in the House of Worship bulletin 2 months before hand Three weeks before Observance announce in the bulletin the need for youth and adult support through their

attendance. On Day of Observance assemble 30 minutes or more before hand, set up displays and secure all final co-

ordinations.

TRAINING National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) – Troops, Teams, Crews, Posts & Ships

Session 1: May 25th–May 30th; Session 2: June 1st–June 6th; Session 3: June 8th–June 13th Scoutmaster/Asst. Scoutmaster Leadership Training (SALT) – January 25th SALT training that presents the skills and methods Scoutmasters can use to organize a Boy Scout Troop and support its boy leaders in developing and delivering an effective, exciting Scouting program. The three sessions are as follows: Getting Started: The Role of the Scoutmaster in a Boy-Led Troop; Lighting the Fire: The Outdoor Program and the Advancement Program; Keeping it Going: Program Planning and Troop Administration. SALT is an all-day course, 9-4. Location: Alpharetta First United Methodist Church, North Main Street, Alpharetta, GA

This course will bring new skills and greater enthusiasm to your youth leadership. This week-long course features instruction in skills that can be used at home, at school, on the job and in particular at the Scout unit level. Through activities, events, games, and adventures, NYLT participants will work hard and play hard together as they put into action the Best scouting has to offer. University of Scouting – January 25th Set your sites to attend! There will be over 40 classes to choose from that range from the beginning leader/Cub Scout parent to Boy Scout leader/veteran Venture Crew advisor, there are even some classes for the youth leaders in your Boy Scout Troop! Don't be stuck on the sidelines when you can enjoy an entire day's event that combines fun with quality instructions to aid you in reaching the end zone. EVENTS Atlanta Reptile and Exotic Animal Expo – January 11 – 12 Since its inception in 2003, Repticon Reptile and Exotic Animal Expos has welcomed Scouts and their leaders to our shows with discount tickets for family members and FREE ADMISSION for any Scout or leader wearing his/her uniform. Repticon returns to Atlanta on January 11 & 12, 2014, for another fun-filled and highly educational event. As always, we invite all of our Scout troops and their families to join us for a great celebration of all things reptilian and amphibian. We also have invertebrates, spiders, furry critters and more! Adventure Corps – For Polar Cubs 2/1 or 2/2 and/or Spring Fling 4/11 – 4/13 The Adventure Corps program is for Boy Scouts Troops, Venturing Crews and Exploring Posts to provide service at cub Adventure Weekends throughout the year. Service activities include program staffing, dining hall operations, parking, and logistics. Participation is free and all veenfits are provided at no cost. http://www.atlantabsa.org/adventurecorps Scout Night at the Circus – February 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, or 16 Surprise and wonder delights audiences with over the top feats of strength, agility and courage at the new Ringling Bros. show Built to Amaze. More information: http://www.atlantabsa.org/document/scout-night-at-ringling-bros-circus/103988 Webelos Woods – March 7-9 – Bert Adams Scout Reservation During the weekend of March 7-9 2014, the Northern Ridge District will host Webelos Woods at Bert Adams Scout Reservation. Webelos Woods is an adventure designed to introduce Webelos Scouts and their parents to the exciting adventures of Boy Scouting and help make the transition into Boy Scouting exciting. The weekend is filled with fun activities, demonstrations, and plenty of outdoor excitement. Scouts and their parents are invited to participate as individuals or with their den. Because this is a District sponsored event, individual Local Tour Permits are not required. The cost of the event is $7.50 per person which includes a colorful event patch. All participants must have a current Class 1 Personal Health and Medical Record form with them at check in. Units are responsible for their own meals and camping supplies. Parents are encouraged to attend and learn more about Troops and Boy Scouting. Registration by dens is encouraged; however, individual registrations will be accepted. Basic Schedule: Friday afternoon/evening - Webelos Dens arrive and check in; Friday night campout by Dens; Saturday - opening ceremony at 9am and a day of Scouting activities; Saturday Evening - Council Campfire; Saturday night campout; Sunday - Scouts’ Own Service, clean up, pack up, depart for home

District Pinewood Derby – February 8th

Spring Fling – A Cub Adventure Weekend – April 11th – 13th, 2014 This is a wild weekend of fishing, shooting, hiking, games, and much more. Come for the weekend or just for the day on Saturday. ◊ Classes have a maximum capacity. Registra&on is on a first come, first serve basis. Online registra&on

deadline is January 10 and is the only way to receive a T-shirt & lunch. If there are le?-over patches,

Event Notes ◊ Doors open at 7:30 am. The Midway will return this year with vendors and informa&on booths

to peruse before and a?er classes. The Scout Shop will be present with their merchandise

available.

◊ A new feature of the Midway will offer units to display pictures and fliers of their events and

ac&vi&es to that other units can get ideas for their units.

◊ Outdoor classes rain or shine ... or snow. Dress appropriately. There is no outdoor sea&ng: bring

your own chair.

1st Place and Honorable Mention for each Category.

Grand Prize winner (the most points) takes home

Online Registration: Register for “Cook Off” in 1st and 2nd periods.

Judging will take place during 3rd period.

You are free to take a 3rd period class.

RULES

• You must use a Dutch oven to cook your food.

• Outside space will be provided but “Leave No Trace” principals are in effect,

i.e. ground scorch marks, ash, coals, etc. must not be present, area cleaned up, etc.
