Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Caregivers

I don’t know about your home but in my house this week there has been some questions from Miss 7 Year Old about ‘Coronavirus’. What is it Mum? Do people die? What happens if I get it? Do any of those conversations sound familiar? If so, Karen Young, Psychologist and founder of psychology web resource ‘Hey Sigmund’ has written an article that may provide you with some suggestions on how to broach this conversation.

Karen’s advice, along with Dr. Elizabeth Westrupp (clinical psychologist) is outlined in the following link talking to kids about coronavirus. This article is available on her Facebook page ‘Hey Sigmund – Karen Young’. “If young children are curious about what they are hearing, or if they might have heard something that feels unsettling for them, give them the information they need to feel safe but they don’t need more than that.

Children are constantly watching our behaviour and reading our moods to gauge their safety. Dr. Westrupp suggests parents need to check in with their own feelings and frame of mind about COVID-19. “Sometimes the way we communicate makes a big difference to the message. Make sure that before they (parents) start the conversation, parents have thought about it themselves and worked out what the key messages are that they want to give their child.”

On a practical level, Dr Westrupp says reminding kids about washing hands and basic hygiene is a good step. While we should be doing these things anyway, it can help kids feel like they are actually doing and controlling something, as well as reducing the chances of infection. The good news is that children are more resilient than we think.”

As we head into the last three weeks of term we know there are going to be some exciting events happening. Those events are outlined in this newsletter. Our biggest fundraiser for the year is also coming up. The Colour Fun Run will be a fabulous afternoon and thanks to the partnership with School Fundraising we are able to raise money for the school and children also get to receive great prizes. I do encourage all families to get behind this P & C Fundraiser in whatever capacity you are able too. This could be through supporting your child to raise funds by posting their fundraising page to friends or talking with neighbours and family members or it could be through offering to volunteer on the day at the event. Every little bit helps to reach our school goal of ‘very very very big fans for our hall!’.

Please keep up to date with all of our upcoming events via the school Facebook page and also through your parent email address.

UNIFORMS

The humid weather has lifted (for the time being) and jumpers are starting to be worn. A reminder to students and families that school jumpers are available at the uniform shop. If your child does not have a school jumper can you please ensure that they have a note from parents to explain why they are not in school uniform and that a school jumper will be arranged. It is absolutely essential that jumpers are clearly NAMED.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Bridge Builders

Our Year 6 students are engaged in the Bridge Builders program. This program provides support to Junior Students during playtime. This support looks like helping to problem solve when conflict arises with friendship. Conflict is a normal part of relationships. Learning to solve conflict will help to build healthy young people.

Fundraising

We’re holding the School Fun Run’s Crazy Colour Day as a major fundraising event this year! The event will be held on Thursday 26th of March. We are really hoping to raise $10000 which will pay for upgrades to our school hall.

The sponsorship forms were sent home this week with your child. Once you have the form, you should sign up for a Student Profile Page at schoolfunrun.com.au. You’ll be able to access online fundraising and can win a $20,000 Ultimate Family Experience!

Students who raise $10 or more will receive a reward, and the more money you raise the better the reward, and the more you help the school!

We’re looking for all students to participate and we’re organising a great day for our community, so we’d love everyone to come down to support the kids.

If you have any questions about the Crazy Colour Day please contact the School Fun Run Office on 1800 FUN RUN or the Northgate School office.

Thanks for supporting the school and we hope to see you at the event!
