aN eVeNING WItH aUtHor KatHLeeN GeorGeAuthor Kathleen George, one of Pittsburgh’s treasures has said, “all writers are crazy;

all theatre people are crazy.” Crazy or not, Kathleen George has managed a highly successful career in both fields

as professor of theatre and writing at the University of Pittsburgh and author of seven popular Pittsburgh-based mysteries as well as other works of fiction and non-fiction. Born in Johnstown, Pa., George had a novel about the Johnstown Flood percolating

in her mind for almost 25 years. Putting it all together in time for the 125th anniversary of the devastating tragedy, she has just published The Johnstown Girls, to high praise. Reviewers have called the work “complex and rewarding storytelling that pays tribute to not only the magnitude of the disastrous flood but also the resilience of Johnstown and its citizens.”On Monday, June 23, at 7 p.m., Northland and the Pittsburgh Chapter of Sisters in

Crime will host an evening with Kathleen George as she describes the background and inspiration for her story about the Johnstown flood’s last known survivor who always believed, in spite of contrary reports that her twin sister had somehow survived.

a DoUGHBoY’S FootLoCKer: LooKING BaCK oN WorLD War IOne hundred years ago, World War I began in Europe. America entered the war in 1916

and the soldiers of the American Expeditionary Force that took part in that war were called Doughboys. They fought under very difficult conditions and had numerous articles of equipment they had to carry with them at all times–rifles, ammunition, food rations, eating tins, gas masks, shovels, back packs (or haversack) helmets, water bottles and documents. On Wednesday, June 25, at 7:00 p.m., Tim Neff of Soldiers and Sailors Museum will

bring a World War I footlocker to Northland to show actual belongings of a soldier from that war. He will describe a soldier’s life during World War I and will give the audience the opportunity to handle the various articles from the trunk. The trunk brings to life the difficulties the soldiers endured during the Great War.This is a program for all ages as we note the anniversary of a world-wide conflict that

was called “The War to End All Wars.”

tUeSDaY NIGHt BooK DISCUSSIoNOn June 3 at 7 p.m., the group will discuss Frozen in Time: An Epic Story of Survival

and a Modern Quest for Lost Heroes of World War II by Mitchell Zuckoff. On Nov. 5, 1942, a U.S. cargo plane slammed into the Greenland Ice Cap. Four days later, the B-17 assigned to the search-and-rescue mission was lost and also crashed. Miraculously, all nine men on board survived, and the U.S. military launched a daring rescue operation. But after picking up one man, the rescue plane flew into a storm and vanished. Frozen in Time tells the story of these crashes, the fate of the survivors, and the expedition that brought them to safety. Our selection for July is The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness and

Murder by Charles Graeber.

Northland Library will

be closed to the public on

Monday, June 9 for Computer

replacement Upgrades.

WISe WaLKWeek nine of the Wise Walk will be on

Wednesday, June 4 at Pie Traynor Field at 9:30 a.m. The following Wednesday, June 11 the

group will meet at Pie Traynor Field at 9:30 a.m. for the last walk and then those who wish, will gather for lunch at the North Park Boathouse. Refreshments will be available at the library for those who are not going to lunch. This event was co-sponsored by the Allegheny County Library Association, AARP and UPMC.

eState PLaNNING: teN IMPortaNt tIPS & teN CoMMoN MIStaKeSFor some people, estate planning can

raise a number of questions. What do living trusts have to do with estate plan-ning? If I have a will, do I need an estate plan? Can’t I just trust my surviving family members to “do the right thing?” These questions and more will be made clear when Attorney Claire Johnson Saenz speaks about estate planning on Thursday, June 12 at 7 p.m. Attorney Saenz co-founded a success-

ful law practice in the Wexford area and then established her own practice, also in Wexford. She can reduce any complex legal terms to easily understood language and will explain why it’s important to correct the most common estate planning mistakes.

novel, The Absolutist, gradually reveals the destructive power of a painfully kept secret. Join us for an informal discussion of this thought-provoking and surprising page turner on Friday, June 13 at 11:30 a.m. We’ll begin our informal discussion at noon. The book for discussion in July is The

House of Mirth by Edith Wharton.

SerIoUS reaDerS BooK DISCUSSIoNThe Serious Readers Book Discussion

group finds that works of historical, eco-nomic and political significance provide the opportunity for personal examination and analysis of fateful past events that have had a lasting effect on today’s United States – politically, economically and culturally. If you feel so inclined, please join the discussion on Saturday, June 28, at 11 a.m.

MYSterY LoVerS BooK DISCUSSIoNIf you like mysteries or crime fiction,

you’ll enjoy this group. The books selected for discussion by the Mystery Lovers Group are chosen by the group mem-bers. On Thursday, June 19 at 7 p.m., the group will discuss A Cold Treachery by Charles Todd. Inspector Ian Rutledge is called out by Scotland Yard in the midst of a violent blizzard to be confronted by the savage murder of a farm family while at their kitchen table. This time, Inspec-tor Rutledge thinks he may have met his match in hunting down the cold-blooded killer. The New York Times has called Todd “a phenomenal writer” and his Rutledge series “harrowing psychological drama.” No registration is necessary. In July the group will feature the 1945

movie classic, And Then There Were None starring Barry Fitzgerald and Walter Hus-ton. This is considered to be the best of the five versions of this movie.

In a few words, why do you volunteer at Northland Library? “Volunteering at the Library gives me the opportunity to give back to my community and to

help others enjoy and explore what the Library has to offer. A good feeling comes from knowing you helped someone complete a hard task, or accomplish a goal, and volunteering allows me to experience that feeling fully and often. BreaD For BooKS: Get to Know Bobbie Smithco Northland’s June PartnerIn February of 2000, Bobbie Smithco stumbled upon Tastefully Sim-

ple when visiting the Mall of America with her children. At the time, she had a career with a major east coast airline, but thought joining Tastefully Simple would be a fun way to make some extra money. A year and a half later, 9/11 occurred and the airline industry suddenly changed. She no longer had her airline job and her spouse encour-aged her to work for Tastefully Simple full-time.

Tastefully Simple sells delicious products and offers meal-time solutions through in-home parties, on-line orders, corporate gifts and fundraising. In addition to the deli-cious ‘open and enjoy’ products, they offer an expanded Gluten Free product line, many natural seasonings, meal-time recipe solutions and great gifts. As a Tastefully Simple consultant, Bobbie is happy to partner with Northland Library

and support the Foundation’s fundraising efforts because she feels the library has so many resources and so much to offer everyone. Bobbie’s children grew-up loving to read books from Northland Library. They also enjoyed the summer reading program, story-time and the many educational programs. She feels that it is great to give back and a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the Library’s fundraising initiative. Bob-bie and her husband Tom are Marshall Twp. residents and have been members of the library for many years.

The Bread for Books program provides financial support for the

Northland Public Library Foundation which funds programs and initiatives

that are not possible through theLibrary’s operating budget.
