Page 1: NORTHLAND€¦ · we celebrate our 30th year sponsoring our life-saving Northland Rescue Helicopter service. We will be out and about raising money through a number of community events

Keep your service lines safe You are generally responsible for the powerlines, poles and cables supplying electricity to houses, dwellings or sheds on your property. These are called service lines and are not part of our network.

Check them regularly to keep them, you, your loved ones and pets safe. Northpower or your electrician can assess the condition of your service line.

Call us on 09 430 1803 for more information.

Think before you plantDon’t be that person who cuts power to your neighbours by planting trees near powerlines.

And don’t be that person who causes injury or electrocution – or ends up footing the bill for damaging our powerlines or power poles.

You must prevent your trees and other vegetation from growing too close to powerlines.

We will fell or trim vegetation near our electricity network once free of charge.

Meet Jan…There would hardly be a child in Kaipara and Whangarei who hasn’t learnt a thing or two from our Customer Advisor Jan Thomsen.

Jan spends time with dozens of schools and community groups around Kaipara and Whangarei every year and has been doing so since 1998! She says the best part of the job is visiting schools and community groups

where she speaks about electrical safety, offers heating advice and discusses how to reduce power bills. Jan’s stories are always backed by real life examples.

If you want to book Jan for a visit next year, please email her: [email protected] or 027 436 2275.

Jan’s top safety tipsOutdoors

1. Look up and look out for overhead powerlines whenever handling tall objects.

2. Check before you dig, watch out for what’s below and request a cable locate when working near underground cables.

3. If you see or come across downed powerlines stay away, keep other people away and call Northpower faults.

Indoors1. Don’t overload plugs or multi-boards -

they generate heat and can cause a fire.

2. Repair and replace frayed or damaged appliance cords.

3. Always turn off and unplug device chargers when not in use.

30 years in the air!The annual fundraising campaign for the Northland Rescue Helicopter service is underway.

We have run the campaign on behalf of our brilliant air ambulance service - and fellow sponsor Top Energy - for many years now but the 2018 fundraising appeal is particularly special. Right now, we are celebrating 30 years saving the lives of Northlanders and visitors to our region.

That’s right, it was November 17, 1988, that we transported our first ever patient, Lynda Tracey, from the car park at Kaitaia Hospital (you can check out Lynda’s story here: nest.org.nz/another-shot-at-life/). Without that flight, Lynda would not have survived to see her three grandchildren grow up.

Like Top Energy, Northpower is a proud founding sponsor of the service which has now flown over 20,000 flights. This year’s appeal will be packed with activity, from community breakfasts to school visits and chopper rides, to a book launch.

Keep an eye out for the official appeal envelope in your letter box during October and November. Let’s see if we can beat our record total from 2017 when our generous Northland community donated $307k!

Interesting chopper statsSince 1988 …

• 3.4 million km travelled

• 3.5 trips to the moon and back

Our Choppers…• 42,000 take offs and landings

• 16 months in the air non-stop!

Career at Northpower? From a Line Mechanic, Cable Jointer or Arborist, to an Engineer or an Accountant – you can be anything at Northpower.

We employ 1200 staff North Island-wide and almost 400 people in Northland alone!

Central Northland Science Fair 2018 This year over 250 school pupils from years 7 to 13 entered the 2018 Central Northland Science Fair.

Northpower again sponsored the Year 9 Class Awards and the George (Hoori) Tuhiwai Memorial Award – a special award created in memory of Hoori Tuhiwai who was instrumental in the successful elver capture and transfer programme at our Wairua Hydro Power Station at Titoki.

Congratulations to Twilight Edwards - Ngati Hau, Te Kapotai, Ngati Wa - (pictured) from Huanui College who won that one this year!

This year Northpower’s Shaun Brown (Network Distribution Engineer) and Russell Watson (Network Engineering Manager) supported the Science Fair by taking on the hard task of judging some of the really impressive entries.

Get connected now!If you want the best online experience possible (for example watching the Rugby World Cup 2019 live and uninterrupted), you are best to connect with Northpower Fibre.

Dargaville’s very own WOW! It’s official, Jackie Butterworth is the winner of the Northpower sponsored Avante-garde award for her Effervescent entry inspired by ‘visions of a bubble bath’.

Northpower Chair Nikki Davies-Colley made the presentation at the culmination of the Dargaville World of Wearable Arts contest last month.

The calibre of both creative ingenuity and skilled fabrication and crafting on display made for a tough task for the judges.

Elver transfer programmeTitoki is home to one of New Zealand’s most successful elver (baby eel) transfer programmes. The project improves the elvers chances of successful migration above the Wairua Falls.

We are proud of our conservation efforts for the eel fishery in collaboration with local hapu Te Parawhau Ki Korokota, the National Institute of Atmosphere and Water (NIWA) and other stakeholders.

Preparations are underway for what we hope will be another successful season this summer. We look forward to bringing you more updates!

Fibre – connecting you fasterWord from the CEOIt is pleasing to see spring making its presence felt as we celebrate our 30th year sponsoring our life-saving Northland Rescue Helicopter service.

We will be out and about raising money through a number of community events until the end of November, which is also when we launch into the new elver transfer season at our century old Wairua Hydro Power Station – an important environmental programme for us.

Fine weather means our arborist crews are fully mobilised and getting on top of tree and vegetation maintenance around our electricity assets. It also means plenty of DIY activity for us all at home.

In recent months we have had a spate of accidents and near misses around our network. There are some great safety tips in this issue of Consumerline, so please take care around powerlines or underground cables and stay safe.

In our last Consumerline I mentioned some of the key projects we are planning to ensure improved reliability for you, our consumers.
