Norths Renovations arein full swing, see - P6

2 Norths September–October ’11

Haven’t the renovations moved fast?! And I can tell you that behind those walls, matters have moved fast with the opening of the first stage of the new gaming lounge, the new outdoor and new dining facilities only weeks away.

Thanks to all of you, our patrons, for your massive support so far through these refurbishments. Many of you I think are even more excited about something happening at your club than even we are.

With the completion of the outdoor areas we will be able to have a greater relationship with the memorial gardens surrounding the club but which heretofore we have been unable to see or access from within the club itself. Now these magnificent areas can be seen and appreciated by all for what they are.

We have also just returned from a visit to the annual Hospitality and Gaming Expo down at Darling Harbour which allows us to see the latest and greatest products coming our way, so we have been on a bit of a spending spree and stocked up on a number of sensational new games for the new gaming room. Some of the ideas they are working on for the future are just amazing and we can’t wait to see them make their way up to Queensland in the future.

Internally as each area starts to open up we have ensured that the finishes and the furnishings are all of an extremely high standard and quality.

Many of you took advantage of the tours of the worksites over the past few weeks and I know that you greatly enjoyed those and it was very interesting to hear what many of you thought and how excited you were about the works and the future direction of the club.

If you are still interested in taking one of these tours please ensure that you contact reception or check out the plans on line at the www.northsleagues.com website.

During the past couple of months we have been inundated with winners for our Plasma Party. Congratulations to all 24 winners throughout the promotion although I understand that there has been considerable debate created in many homes as to who gets the right to choose the channel on the new TV! Congratulations also go out to the winners of our “$3,000 Surprise Draw” at our final Plasma Party draw! Just goes to show that you never know just what to expect!

On to other matters now and tickets are selling fast for the appearance of Justice Crew here at Norths, so make sure you get in fast for this and of course make sure you catch the Whispering Jack show, one

of Australia’s finest tributes to John Farnham.

While we are talking entertainment don’t forget the marvellous Peter James every Friday morning or add to this Tuesday morning melodies with Joe Driscol and then Thursday’s with John McSweeney. It will set you up for a great week of live entertainment before you even get to the live pianos and bands of the weekend!

Watch out for the exciting new promotion, Hundreds & Thousands with your chance to win huge cash prizes every weekend. Further details are inside.

And, yes it IS that time again, Melbourne Cup fast approaches!! Once again we will have our exciting CALCUTTA on the Monday evening before Melbourne Cup – come and join us – and then we have a great day of entertainment for the Cup itself. Enjoy the Race that Stops a Nation to its fullest, only at Norths.

There is, as always, so much to share with you but there is no better place to so do than at the club! Look out for me or one of our management staff throughout the club at any time if you want to know more!

The Jewel of the North ReturnsNorths are presently in the middle of an exciting renovation that will transform the Club. The renovations will offer members and their guests a level of comfort and relaxation never before experienced at the venue. Patrons will be offered a range of experiences, existing facilities will receive significant renovations and exciting new areas have been created. The renovations run from July through until early November, with a number of areas opening throughout the time, including the first stage of gaming in September. The Architects, CAYAS Architects and the construction company Rohrig have teamed together to deliver one of the most exciting renovations in the Club industry for 2011. Both companies are Club and Hotel specialists, understanding the need to offer members and their guests the most comfortable surrounds possible during the renovation process. At the time of writing most of the disruption in terms of noise had already passed, so you can sit back, relax and watch your new Club take shape.

The project includes both interior and exterior upgrades and addition of new facilities, some of the highlights of the projects are outlined:

Stage 1 GamingStage 1 of the Gaming Room renovation will be complete during the month of September. This area will be transformed, from what previously held long banks of poker machines, will now spaciously contain smaller banks in private surrounds, with all new luxurious leather, chrome and wood panelled stools, state of the art lighting features, new cashier facilities and a host of other exciting features. The gaming area will also offer three new dedicated Designated Outdoor Smoking Area (DOSA), two of which will be located within this area.

Stage 2 GamingStage 2 of the Gaming Room will begin immediately after the opening of the first stage, containing the same range of quality finishes and attractive surrounds. This area includes the existing machines located around the bar and those located in the previous TAB area. The third dedicated DOSA will be located off the old TAB area.

Club EntrywayAs you enter Norths, you will immediately see the dramatic new façade to the Club, including the new Outdoor Areas and the striking signage and pillar features. As you continue down the driveway you will notice the new colour scheme for the entire complex, as well as new tiling around the perimeter of the building, this will continue around to and past the reception. The eastern wall

of the complex will be transformed through break out areas with

laser cut metal feature screening and established

landscaping.

Outdoor AreasThe existing outdoor area off the Bistro has been completely re-designed and will contain new areas that wrap around to the front of the Club. The existing area will now offer an indoor/outdoor experience, with private dining areas, entertainment stage, and children’s outdoor area, with padded flooring, play area and dining area. Mature landscaping will feature in large planter boxes, with glassed areas linking the Memorial Gardens to the Club, and large bi-fold doors then linking the indoor areas with the outdoor dining areas that will continue along the front of the Club.

Sports BarThe TAB area will be relocated and expanded, as part of an exciting new Sports Bar area, which will allow patrons to enjoy the races and other sports action in a relaxed and comfortable environment. The Restaurant, Bar and Lounge areas will now be clearly defined with all new furnishings throughout.

RestaurantThe existing Bistro will be upgraded primarily through the addition of the new Outdoor Area, however there will be a new feature leading up to the Restaurant, then all new Servery Area, colour scheme and new furnishings throughout. At the completion of renovations the Restaurant will be re-launched with a new name and new menu catering for a range of tastes and new entertainment and service offerings. There are further plans for the area contained within the Master Plan that will occur in the next stage of the renovations.

Bar FeaturesThe Bar area will receive a facelift with new fronting and lighting features. As with all the new areas there will be quality furnishings located around the bar area and then spilling out into lounge areas.

Norths are proud to deliver this exciting new Entertainment venue to members and their guests and we look forward to seeing you in the Club during this time.

As always, stay tuned to www.northsleagues.com for the latest news, photos and updates.

Monday 31 October From 7pm.Organise a group of friends and come along and bid on the Melbourne Cup horses. You could “own it” or buy in our Auction. For your chance to get involved, entry tickets are only $1.00. Then join us on Monday 31st October from 7pm for all the fun of the Auction!

Minimum Prize Pool of $7500!

How does the Calcutta work? -Raffle tickets costing $1 each are sold, concluding at 6.45pm on Monday 31st October 2011 (the night before Melbourne Cup Day), with the Calcutta commencing then at 7pm. These ticket sales create a pool of money called the “prize pool”.During the Calcutta, 24 of the tickets sold are drawn out for the respective 24 Melbourne Cup Horses (2011). If your ticket is one of the 24, you will be a ‘horse owner’ for the Calcutta Event.Following the draw each horse will be auctioned in descending order of barrier numbers. Anyone can bid on any horse during the auction. The new successful bidder must pay the full amount of the bid. 50% of the bid, is paid to the original horse owner, final 50% paid to the prize pool. The successful bidder is now the new ‘Horse Owner’If the original ‘horse owner’ would like to keep their horse, they must have the highest bid. However the owner only has to pay half the amount that they bid, this amount will be added to the prize pool.

What is the prize pool? -The pool of prize money is therefore made of;1. Original Pool (Ticket Sales)2. +50% of the Auction Money, from horse sales

The prize money is divided up as follows;First place 60% of Prize poolSecond Place 25% of Prize poolThird Place 10% of Prize poolLast Place 5% of Prize pool See our friendly staff today to purchase your Calcutta tickets

A Day to RememberA minute is not a long time, it’s how long it takes to brush your teeth, or unload the dishwasher. So on November 11 at 11am please put aside just one minute from your busy day and do nothing, say nothing, but remember those who have fallen so we can have the freedom and life we enjoy today. On the eleventh minute on the eleventh day of the eleventh month in the year 1918 the guns fell silent over Europe and the Great War came to a close. As many as 13 million people had died before a defeated Germany called for an armistice (suspension of fighting). This November 2011 as is now the tradition, Pine Rivers District RSL Sub-branch Inc. will hold a Remembrance Day Service, in the Memorial Gardens which are in front of the Norths Leagues & Services Club on Anzac Avenue, Kallangur. The public are welcome to attend and if you can’t, then wear the Remembrance Day Poppy, the symbol of those who have fallen.

The Red Poppy In Flanders Fields the poppies blowBetween the crosses, row on row. That mark our space, and in the skyThe larks still bravely singing, flyScarce heard among the guns below. We the dead, short days agoWe lived, felt dawn, saw sunsets glow.Loved, and were loved, and now we lieIn Flanders Fields.Take up your quarrel with the foe,To you from falling hands we throwThe Torch. Be yours to hold it high.If ye break faith with us who die, we shall not sleep,Though poppies grow in Flanders Fields

Angels Live at Norths!Friday 16 December, From 7:30pmTickets cost $35 per personMid 2011 saw Rick Brewster’s Angels fronted by Dave Gleeson of The Screaming Jets perform two mind-blowing sell out shows in Sydney and Adelaide. They showcased the band’s new single “Waiting For The Sun” as well as performing all the classics, leaving fans screaming for more, excited at the prospect of a new revitalized Angels.Following that wave of enthusiasm, what had started out as a bit of fun between Gleeson and the Brewsters has created a new chapter for the Angels. In August, ‘Politically Incorrect’ launched their comedy CD to media and the entertainment industry at their HQ’s in Crows Nest. The Angels closed the show with ‘Am

I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again’, ‘We Gotta Get Out Of This Place’ and ‘Take A Long Line’. In a tough room the band blew the crowd away. Post show there were many comments on how amazing they sounded with Dave up front. November/December 2011 will see The Angels embark on the “Waiting For The Sun” tour, which will be their first of many with Dave Gleeson up front. If the shows at The Annandale and Norwood were any indication, fans new and old are set for an Angels experience reminiscent of gigs in the early years at the Bondi Lifesaver in 1979.In launching the tour, The Angels have yet another surprise for their fans, releasing their first video since ‘Caught In The Night” in 1997. Tickets are expected to sell quickly so don’t delay, purchase your tickets today from Norths Leagues & Services Club, call 3285 2733 or ask at reception.

The most certain way to direct payment of your superannuation death benefit is by making a binding death benefit nomination (BDN). The nominated beneficiaries must be ‘dependants’ (i.e. a spouse, a child, a financial dependant or someone with whom you have an interdependent relationship) or a legal personal representative (i.e. the executor or administrator of a deceased estate). The most appropriate beneficiary will depend on your personal circumstances. If the valid nomination has been properly signed and witnessed and is current at the date of death, then the trustees of the superannuation fund must pay the death benefit to the nominated beneficiaries. Unlike wills, valid BDNs are unlikely to be overturned by a court (although this has yet to be fully tested).Be aware that a BDN is only valid for three years, so it’s important to ensure they remain current. You should also review your BDN any time you experience a major change in your personal circumstances (e.g. marriage, divorce, the birth of a child or the death of a nominated beneficiary). If a non-binding or preferred nomination is in place, or if there’s no nomination at all, the trustee is under a legal obligation to pay a death benefit to the member’s dependant(s). In most cases, benefits will be paid in a way that’s consistent with the wishes of the deceased member as set out in the non-binding nomination. However, it’s possible the trustee may recognise a wider range of dependants than the member would have liked (e.g. a separated spouse). In some cases, the member’s preferred

Who gets your super?

beneficiary may not meet the legal definition of a dependant. In the absence of any dependants and a legal personal representative, the trustee may exercise their discretion and pay the benefit to a non-dependant.

Consider a BDNWith increasing levels of wealth being held in superannuation, together with increasing levels of life insurance, members should be taking a more active interest in what will happen to their superannuation benefits (including insurance benefits) when they die. A valid BDN provides greater certainty about where these benefits will go. Brendan O’FarrellChief Executive Officer Intrust Super

Congratulations to Michelle Manson and Jane McDonald who joined hundreds of riders in the annual “Ride to Conquer Cancer” cycling event. Here is Michelle’s account of their experience.

Well we did it! Over the weekend Jane and I rode 240kms from St Lucia University to Wivenhoe and back facing some challenges along the way like nasty hills and driving rain for 2 hours on the second day. We listened to some inspirational speakers on Saturday night and you go away knowing the challenges we faced are nothing compared to the challenges being faced daily by cancer sufferers throughout Queensland and for that matter, everywhere. It was amazing to see how many people that were riding that had beaten cancer or were undergoing treatment that still had the courage to front up. I managed to raise $3505 and Jane $2645 and the event raised $4,700,000 which is a Queensland record for a single charity event. After listening to the speakers, it is comforting to know that all

the money that was raised is going to valuable research that will benefit cancer sufferers in Queensland.Once again, we would like to thank each and everyone of you again for your generous donations and support to a worthwhile cause. And yes, I will be bothering you all again next year because if this years event was anything to go by, next years will be bigger and better. Thank you all.
