Before we get into the rest of what’s happening around the club let me firstly say thank you to everyone who made ANZAC Day such a fantastic day at the Club, from those who started at midnight that morning to those who finished up at 1am that night!

As ever the Pine Rivers RSL Sub Branch and Ladies Auxiliary led services that were fitting tributes to our defence force personnel past and present and the local community turned out in numbers (arguably the highest attendances seen at either services during the morning) to pay their respects.

Well done also to our fantastic staff here at Norths as well who performed outstandingly throughout the day as the club was packed from morning to night.

As I write this also, we have just had the coldest morning this year! Half of the office staff are sitting with their woolly jumpers on so it is fitting that we turn our attention to some great entertainment to while away those cold nights that are surely just around the corner.Following on the back of Andrew Wishart from the TV series X-factor and Dean Vegas, we have some great shows coming up.

Bon Jovi & Bryan Adams (Tribute show!) kick off next month, a change of pace with Aussie funny man Austen Tayshus, before David Campbell sets the place alight in July!

There are also some great local bands playing again in the main lounge on Saturday nights from 9pm, following on immediately from the dinner time acts we have on Friday & Saturday evenings.

Don’t forget about Christmas In July. A very enjoyable lunch time event in the Auditorium coming up and maybe even a guest appearance by the big guy in the red suit!

Congratulations to Karen on winning the Toyota Rav 4 last month. A much wanted prize judging on your response to this promotion and the number of people asking when we’re going to give another one away!

Once again our thanks to Torque Toyota Strathpine and North Lakes who provided the car and for their ongoing partnership with the club through the Northern Alliance.

As to another car or similar giveaway, all I can say is watch this space….and you may not have to watch too long!

In the meantime try your hand at winning the cash giveaways on Sunday afternoon with the Spin a Fortune (Platinum version) with more chances to win more cash each week.

I would also like to take the opportunity and welcome Michael Fields into his new role within the club. Many of you will already know Michael from other work within the club over the past few years but he will be taking over the Customer Liaison role this month so you will see a lot more of him around the club.

kayakers cross Bass Strait to raise money for BraveheartsAfter eight amazing days, Justin Ribot and a hardy group of six other adventurers arrived on a beach in Northern Tasmania having paddled their Kayaks across Bass Strait. The group included several novice kayakers including

Justin who had only been in a kayak once before he started the two months training prior to the crossing. On March 15 the adventurers left Port Welshpool (Victoria) bound for Little Musselroe Bay (Tasmania) with dolphins, seals and penguins as escorts, the group would encounter many challenges along the way.“It was an amazing trip,” said Justin. “Bass Strait is an area of extremes, with beautiful islands that appear almost untouched, set within a weather environment that can turn nasty incredibly quickly,” he said.“It could be clear and sunny, then turn into a massive storm within 45 minutes to an hour.”On the longest day, the kayakers paddled for more than nine hours from Deal Island to Flinders Island. The group hopped between remote islands on the eight day crossing, often camping out amongst hundreds of penguins. The final few days were the most challenging. The group were forced to abort on day 7, halfway through their proposed journey to Clarke Island as a storm ripped through the area. With 100km per hour winds, the boats needed to be tied down and the group had to ride out the storm.

Page 7: Norths Leagues & Services Club - Issue 26

May–June ’12 Norths 7

This meant that on the last day amongst massive seas the men had to finish the 340km journey in the most treacherous conditions. It was a challenge and a test for both novice and experienced paddlers with one kayak capsizing and a number of testing moments.“Just hours after we finished there was 140km winds and a 7m swell,” said Justin. In the end the group paddled in together, the extreme winds had blown them off course and they landed at the wrong beach where the waiting media had gathered, leaving a quiet celebration for the group on a journey of a lifetime.

“It was an amazing journey with really special people and a great experience,” said Justin.“It was made all the more special by the amount of money we could raise for Bravehearts,” he said. Each paddler had to raise $25,000 for Bravehearts, an organisation which is dedicated to helping save children from child abuse.Justin set himself a goal of $50,000 and to date has raised over this toward the Bravehearts cause.Everyone at Norths Leagues and Services Club is extremely proud of Justin’s achievement and wish to offer him our congratulations on an amazing achievement.

May–June ’12 Norths 11

The Liberal National Party have 77 seats in Queensland’s Government after the worst defeat in the history of Queensland or any state election. One of those seats was won by “Trevor Ruthenberg”, he is the member for Kallangur and won his seat with a massive swing. But who is “Big Trev Ruthenberg”? We spoke to the man himself and here are some of the things we found.

Q. When did you decide you were going to be a politician?A. “My wife and I lived overseas for a fair while, in Indonesia and Canada, from there to USA where we spent over 5 years.”“When my children were 2 and 4 years old we decided to come back to Oz.” Having been out of the country for nine years it wasn’t the place we left. At some point my wife got sick of me whinging too much and said, put up or shut up, so I put up.”

Q. how big was the swing in your seat?A. “We started with a 4% deficit and we ended up with a 12.5% margin, so it was a big swing, and slightly bigger than the state average.”

Q. What were you doing locally before you got into politics?A. “We were involved with the things the kids were doing. I was the CEO of the Lutheran Church of Australia. We had some 8 billion dollars in assets and about 12,000 employees, 110 school campuses and 45 aged care facilities.”

Q. how old are your children now?A. “Right now my oldest boy is 14 and my youngest boy is 12.”

Q. Looking ahead for the next 3 years what are your 4 or 5 key things you want to achieve for the local area?A. “Transport infrastructure has a serious deficit, the immediate problem is Petrie Bridge, but once the bridge is fixed the Petrie roundabout will be a problem. There are issues with Youngs Crossing and Dohles Rocks Road, especially the connectivity to the highways.” We need a Park and Ride facility for our trains. Narangba is getting 50 car parks now, but Dakabin and Petrie need more parking. Bus services around the region need to improve, so transport is a big issue.”

“I knocked on the doors of nearly 14,000 homes in the year before the election. I wanted people to either slam the door in my face or ask me a question. We were on the side of the roads so people could stop and talk and we’ll be starting that up again soon.”“One of the big issues from the door knocking was youth and family services through the electorate. There just isn’t much in Kallangur especially where people are vulnerable or disadvantaged. From a youth perspective we don’t have something like a skate park, the closest is Petrie. So we will talk to youth and family groups to see how we can make a difference. One of the areas that’s obvious is family counselling – making services available to people. I am particularly interested in the kids who are at risk of dropping out of school. If you look at stats, something like 60,000 kids dropped out of school in Queensland last year.If we can help prevent that, or put intervention programs in place it will help. Eighty percent of people in jail right now in Australia have poor literacy skills. Kids dropping out at 12 and 13 can’t enter the workforce so what do they do? So we have started working on that. There is a group called Youth Excel, they will be operating from the Christian Outreach Centre at Lillybrook up on Old Gympie Road. Youth Excel run a program that goes into high schools and work with kids who are about to get booted out of school. Their stats clearly show that their program works with the kids, 74% of these children go through to finish year 12.There is no government funding and I have agreed to be an ambassador for that organisation.”To read the full interview, please go to the Club News section on our website at www. northsleagues.com.

We ask Aussie QLDs Mortgage Broker of the Year – What is NrAS? 10,000 for 10 Years.... Sounds like a great opportunity.

rochelle hallAussie Strathpine Strathpine

Aussie Strathpine owner Rochelle Hall is holding an information meeting on the NRAS scheme at Norths Leagues and Services Club on May 10 at 6.30 pm.She said the evening was geared to educate people about the scheme and how it is a fantastic opportunity for Australians looking to benefit from property investment.“Only 1 in 100 Australians will retire comfortably, which is a terrible statistic,” she said. “I am a huge fan of NRAS (National Rental Assistance Scheme) property at the moment as this gives you the best of both worlds.“A negative geared property with positive cash flow that is subsidised by the Government,” she said.Mrs Hall said the NRAS Incentive, compared with a conventional residential investment property can provide a better cash return to investors than the receipt of full market rent. She added that the scheme offered investors an opportunity to have a positively geared investment, which she believes is far superior to negative gearing.

“I have never understood the concept of spending money to save on tax,” she said. “I like the fact what with a positive cash flow property you do not need to put your hand in your pocket each week for the mortgage.“You can save that money and look at buying the next property.”The NRAS Scheme is expected to deliver up to 50,000 affordable rental homes by 2014.According to the schemes website, if the investor reduces the rent by 20 per cent (may vary according to incentive provider) of the market rent, the government will provide an incentive of $9,140 per annum ($6,855 from Federal and $2,285 from the State governments). This payment increases in line with CPI and in 2012 it is $9,140.Eligible tenants are determined on an income basis with the service industries such as police, teachers and nurses targeted as potential tenants.

ANZAC DAY 2012They came in their thousands to honour those who have serviced their country. The old and the young crowded into the memorial gardens at Norths Leagues and Services Club Anzac Avenue for what veterans say is the largest dawn service crowd they have

ever seen. Under cloudy skys the veterans and their families marched to the sound of pipes and drums, wreaths were layed and prayers were given to those who had fallen. Here are just some of the memorial images of ANZAC Day at Norths.

The Moreton Bay Rail Link will transform the region, providing a dedicated public transport corridor for one of the fastest growing areas in the country.

The project will provide a 12.6 km dual-track passenger rail line between Petrie and Kippa-Ring, including six new rail stations at Kallangur, Murrumba Downs, Mango Hill, Kinsellas Road, Rothwell and Kippa-Ring.

The projects reference design shows the location of the rail line and the proposed new stations.

The $1.147 billion required for the project is being provided jointly by the Australian Government ($742 million), Queensland Government ($300 million plus land) and Moreton Bay Regional Council ($105 million).

Construction will begin in 2013 with road works underway to connect the local road network around the new rail line. These works have been brought forward to ensure the local community remains connected during the rail corridor works.

Design on the rest of the project is continuing, with preliminary design for the rail corridor works (including

the track, structures and six stations) also underway this year.

Construction of the rail corridor works is due to begin in mid-2013 with the new rail line scheduled for delivery by late 2016.
